00:00 Well, the skies are clearing up.
00:01 The winds have calmed down
00:02 here in Southern California.
00:03 It does not mean that this
00:04 is an over and done story.
00:06 Take a look at this massive eucalyptus
00:08 tree that came down in La Jolla.
00:09 This is the kind of cleanup that a lot
00:11 of crews are having to deal with today
00:13 as they start to grapple with the
00:15 weight of this storm and these
00:17 massive winds that move through.
00:19 I mean, think about how strong
00:20 the wind had to be to uproot this puppy.
00:22 This massive tree that's been here
00:24 forever from underneath this sidewalk,
00:26 lifting that concrete and it was right
00:29 next to this massive building too.
00:30 So a wind gust had to come through it.
00:32 Just the right angle and just the right
00:34 speed to push this thing over the
00:36 max recorded wind gusts just north
00:38 of where I am here was 51 miles an
00:41 hour as Hillary made her way into
00:43 Southern California, the first tropical
00:45 storm to do that in more than 80 years.
00:47 Now a lot of work for crews and
00:50 the warning from officials that
00:52 flooding could still happen and
00:53 power lines on the road may still be live.
00:55 The remnants of Tropical Storm
00:58 Hillary now moving out of Southern
00:59 California, but the impact of the
01:01 weekend's drenching rain lingers.
01:03 About 20 miles of Interstate 10
01:05 near Palm Springs shut down Monday
01:07 morning. A long line of trucks
01:08 remained at a standstill. Schools
01:11 were closed for hundreds of thousands
01:12 of children in Los Angeles, San
01:14 Diego and the Coachella Valley.
01:15 LA officials reported 17 minor
01:18 mudflows and 150 tree related
01:20 issues in the city. At one point,
01:21 40,000 households were without power.
01:24 We've got in-house meteorologists
01:26 have been tracking the storm for
01:27 the last five days and to help us
01:29 get make sure we know where the
01:30 biggest impacts are going to be.
01:31 We can pre pre position crews to
01:34 be very responsive, make sure
01:35 equipment's ready.
01:36 California's governor declared a
01:38 state of emergency in several
01:39 Southern counties, including Los
01:41 Angeles, Orange and San Diego.
01:43 7500 emergency responders were
01:45 deployed. The 911 system went down
01:47 in Palm Springs Sunday night.
01:49 Calls were rerouted in the
01:50 interim. Meanwhile, the city's
01:52 roads were impassable. Right now
01:54 we have flooding on all of our
01:56 roads. There's no way in or out
01:58 of Palm Springs. And that's the
02:00 case for the majority of the
02:02 Coachella Valley. We're all
02:03 stuck. Our major freeway, the I-10
02:06 is also closed in both
02:08 directions. So this is a very
02:11 extreme situation at the moment.
02:14 Flight delays and cancellations
02:16 are stacking up across the
02:17 Southwest with 75 cancellations
02:20 at San Diego International
02:21 Airport, according to Flight
02:22 Aware. Hillary is the first
02:23 tropical storm to move into
02:25 Nevada and Las Vegas is already
02:27 experiencing flooding. Some
02:28 areas have gotten one and a half
02:29 inches of rain, which is what
02:31 typically falls in a year. The
02:33 city's fire and rescue is
02:34 helping homeowners respond. I
02:36 came out to get sandbags trying
02:38 to protect my house. Northeastern
02:40 Oregon and Idaho could see flash
02:42 flooding and mudslides like this
02:43 when the predicted heaviest rain
02:45 of the day hits that region.
