AccuWeather's Michelle McLeod breaks down the forecast for Tropical Depression 9 and Tropical Storm Franklin, as well as Emily and Gert, all of which are now active.
Transcript
00:00 Kevin, I mean, we're going to take a look at everything that's going on in the Atlantic, right?
00:04 And it's not abnormal to see this much activity in the Atlantic because it's the end of August.
00:11 So we've got 1, 2, 3, 4, and now we have Tropical Depression 9.
00:14 That's what's going to be impacting Texas.
00:16 You can see the path of this. It's going to transition into a tropical storm by the time it makes landfall on Tuesday morning.
00:25 Now, when it comes to the AccuWeather Real Impact Scale, you're at a 2 out of 5, so it's moderate.
00:31 What that means is we're expecting flooding rains and locally gusty winds, rough seas and strong rip currents.
00:37 And in the U.S., it's less than 1.
00:40 I mean, you're seeing places like Corpus Christi, Laredo, Del Rio, McAllen.
00:45 Let me show you what's going on with the rain.
00:48 So in those same places I was showing you, you're seeing anywhere between 2 to 4 inches.
00:52 As you head into the mountains of Mexico, you're going to see your 4 to 8 inches with an AccuWeather Local Storm X of 12 inches.
00:59 This is why we're worried about the risk for flooding.
01:02 Look how dry it is.
01:05 Houston, Galveston, Bay City, you're seeing extreme drought.
01:09 You mix that with rain, 2 to 4 inches of rain, and yeah, flash flooding is definitely going to be a risk.
01:15 Some of it could possibly be significant.
01:18 Now we're going to turn your attention to Tropical Storm Franklin.
01:21 We're going to be talking about this one for a bit.
01:23 I mean, you see it just south of Hispaniola.
01:26 That is going to take a northward turn.
01:28 You see it. It's a tropical storm.
01:30 Remember I said we're going to be talking about this for a bit?
01:32 Monday is today.
01:34 By the end of this track, you're at 2 p.m. Monday, so it's a whole 7 days.
01:38 We're still talking about this system.
01:40 And just to bring it out a little farther, we're going to be talking about this as it makes its way towards Canada as well.
01:46 But let me give you the impacts, the more immediate impacts.
01:49 We're taking a look at the impacts in places like Santo Domingo and Santiago.
01:54 Significant flooding, mudslides and washouts, damaging winds and power outage.
01:59 And with the AccuWeather Real Impact Scale, you're at a 1.
02:02 But again, in places like Santiago and Santo Domingo, you're at high.
02:06 You're at about a 3 out of 5 on the AccuWeather Risk to Lives and Property Index.
02:11 So when it comes to rain, check this out.
02:13 Those same places I was telling you about, look at that.
02:16 8 to 12 inches of rainfall with an AccuWeather Local Storm Max of 30 inches of rain.
02:23 Kevin, that is a lot of rain.
02:24 It's going to be quite impactful.
02:26 You know what?
02:27 Over the last 24 hours, that storm really has intensified.
02:30 And the speed that it's going, it's not too fast of forward speed.
02:33 It could put down a lot of rain.
02:35 You're right there in Hispaniola.
02:36 Thanks, Michelle.
