Letby victims' lawyer calls for a public inquiry

  • last year
Families of some of Lucy Letby's victims are calling for a public inquiry into her appalling crimes. Tamlin Bolton, a lawyer speaking on their behalf has told ITV news they're also focusing on pursuing civil claims against the NHS Trust Letby worked for. The 33-year-old was sentenced to life behind bars for murdering 7 newborns and attempting to kill 6 others at the Countess of Chester Hospital. After her trial it emerged that several colleagues had raised concerns about Letby but were ignored - there are now calls for NHS bosses to be regulated.

00:00 Well, the families have sat through nine months of horrific evidence and they've waited for the jury decisions.
00:05 For most of the families we act for, their suspicions are vindicated about what happened to their children.
00:11 But there are other families, certainly that we represent, that didn't get answers from the jury decision and that don't have any closure at all.
00:18 Out of courtesy, we're giving the families space to think about what happened, to process those emotions,
00:24 and I think that that's probably what they'll all need now.
00:27 Well, they're left with so many questions. There's no resolution.
00:30 They've been through the trial, they've heard the evidence about their children, and now they still don't have any answers.
00:36 It must be so incredibly difficult for them.
00:39 We're now looking at the cases against the trust.
00:42 What was known, what wasn't known, what was reported by the pediatricians and the pediatric nurses,
00:47 and what steps senior management could and should have taken, and if there were any failings in that supervision from them.
00:53 We've heard a lot of evidence from the pediatricians about the documents they've had and the complaints they've made.
00:58 We now really need to explore the timeline.
01:01 I don't think anybody is suggesting that all of the harm to the children and all of the deaths could have been prevented,
01:06 but if some could, it's really important that we find that out.
