05:16 for a potentially life-threatening bone infection,
05:19 which had caused her severe back pain.
05:21 - I was literally biting the pillow on the couch one day,
05:26 like screaming, because I've never felt pain like that.

05:32 for the 31 days she was in the hospital.
05:34 When they finally reunited, it was extremely emotional.
05:38 - When I saw my son for the first time,
05:41 I literally fell into my arms and started weeping.
05:45 And he said, "Mama, I was so scared
05:48 that you weren't gonna come home from the hospital."
05:50 - But now she is back home
05:52 and is looking forward to the future.
05:54 - When I heal, I'm gonna be the woman
05:56 that I've always wanted to be.

06:10 which runs the whole month of August.
06:12 I'm gonna ask you five questions.
06:13 For question number one, you'll give me one answer.
06:15 Question number two, you'll give me two answers,
06:17 and so on and so forth.
06:18 Are you ready to get started?
06:19 Let's do this.
06:21 You are partnering with Now and Later Candy
06:23 to spotlight and amplify Black-owned self-care brands.
06:26 What is one of your favorite self-care practices
06:29 that would surprise us?
06:30 - Turning my phone off.
06:31 At night, I'm getting good at it.
06:33 My son, Kyan, is the only one who can get through.
06:35 Other than that, the phone gets turned off
06:37 and I'm getting uninterrupted sleep,
06:40 which for someone like me,
06:42 is probably the best practice of self-care
06:45 I could ever do for myself.
06:47 - We always think about self-care as a solo act,
06:49 but it really doesn't have to be.
06:51 So who is that one friend who comes to mind
06:53 when you think about self-care?
06:55 - Kelly Rowland, for sure.
06:56 She is all about taking care of your skin,
06:59 taking care of your body, all of that stuff.
07:02 She's just like the guru.
07:03 - I do wanna mention that Kelly Rowland
07:05 is actually my screensaver on my phone.
07:07 I am obsessed with her, her skin, her hair,
07:09 it's absolutely beautiful.
07:11 She has it all figured out, trust me.
07:13 - I know a lot of people would love to shop
07:15 with more intention, but it's hard to know where to start.
07:18 So what are two of your favorite ways
07:19 to find a brand to support?
07:21 - You know, word of mouth and social media.
07:23 And also, again, for me, the most important thing
07:26 is highlighting the Black-owned self-care brands
07:28 and Black-owned brands period.
07:31 We put a lot of money into other brands.
07:32 It's important to invest in people that look like us,
07:39 that have the same things we go through with us,
07:40 whether it's mentally, with our skin,
07:43 with our bodies, whatever it is.
07:44 I think it's an opportunity for not only me
07:46 to talk about brands that I love,
07:48 but for each one of us to talk,
07:50 whether it's on social media, amongst friends,
07:51 about Black-owned brands that we use and love
07:54 to just continue to support them
07:55 and get the word out there.
07:57 - You're a producer, you're an actress, you're a host,
07:59 and you also created your own incredible haircare brand,
08:02 Inala.
08:04 What were three of your biggest challenges
08:05 while creating your own business?
08:07 - The challenges are starting with yourself,
08:10 the self-doubt, can I do this?
08:12 Are people gonna care?
08:13 Are people gonna wanna support?
08:14 Are people gonna wanna buy something that I put out?
08:17 Getting all those negative thoughts out of your head
08:19 and just saying, I can really do this.
08:21 Then figuring out what is it about my brand
08:24 or what I'm putting out there
08:25 that's gonna be different from what's already out there?
08:28 What's gonna make people wanna grab for my product
08:30 or whatever my thing is that's gonna be different
08:32 from everyone else out there?
08:34 And then three, the patience,
08:36 understanding that everything doesn't just drop
08:38 and the next day it's like, oh, I made millions.
08:39 It's a grind, it's a slow grind.
08:42 And understanding that it takes time
08:44 for people to hear about it and for it to catch on
08:47 and for you to find out who your fan base is
08:49 and your consumer base and what they're looking for.
08:51 A lot of time, patience, and research
08:53 has to go into all of that.
08:54 So you just have to be mentally prepared
08:56 for the journey ahead, but the outcome,
08:59 when it turns out great, is great
09:01 and it makes it all worth it.
09:03 - Your campaign with Now and Later
09:04 is all about prioritizing self-care now
09:07 so you can reset and chase your dreams later.
09:09 What are four dreams or goals that you have
09:11 you still hope to achieve?
09:13 - I would love to continue to become better
09:15 and grow at everything I'm already doing.
09:18 I don't think in anything I've done
09:19 you ever reach your peak.
09:21 Like, okay, I'm done with that.
09:23 You can always be better and grow
09:25 and become more successful in all of the things that I do.
09:28 So continuing to grow as a mom, as a woman,
09:31 it's so important.
09:32 I don't think you ever stop growing in those things
09:35 and paying more attention to my needs
09:37 and the things that make me happy,
09:39 the things that don't, and kind of leaning more
09:40 into the things that make me feel good,
09:42 which is, again, another method of self-care.
09:45 - I read in an interview that you really wanted
09:47 to be outside this summer.
09:49 So what are you doing outside?
09:50 Anything fun?
09:51 - Enjoying myself, having fun,
09:52 allowing myself to have fun, not feeling bad about it.
09:55 You know, I was the kind of person,
09:56 get invited places and like,
09:57 no, I can't, I gotta work,
09:59 or I have this or I have that,
10:00 and just saying, you know what, I'm gonna go.
10:01 Like, I'm not gonna overthink it.
10:02 I'm gonna go, I'm gonna have fun.
10:04 I'm gonna travel, I'm gonna do things
10:05 that I don't normally do,
10:07 because I was always in the mindset of just work, run.
10:09 You can't take a day off, you can't do this,
10:11 you can't do that.
10:12 So really just allowing myself
10:14 to kind of be more free and have these experiences
10:16 and have fun.
10:18 - And finally, can you give us five words
10:20 to describe 2023 Malala Anthony so far?
10:23 - A mother, I would put that before anything.
10:25 I would say passionate, empowered, forgiving, and driven.
