00:08 Aside from the heavy rain and strong typhoon,
00:11 the effects of the changing climate also worries our health,
00:16 including the possible spread of diseases like those caused by the drought.
00:23 For our Climate Change Special Report Series,
00:26 we have another report from the GMA Integrated News Weather Center.
00:31 We will be joined by Amor La Rosa.
00:34 [Sirens]
00:40 How about the former health hazards?
00:43 Due to COVID, dengue also has increased.
00:46 Died because of dengue.
00:48 Dengue cases are high.
00:50 Dengue.
00:51 Dengue.
00:53 It is even more dangerous when the climate changes.
00:57 [Music]
01:04 The effects of climate change are also fueling mosquito breeding and the spread of diseases.
01:10 [Music]
01:14 Even outside the climate, dengue disease has long been feared.
01:20 Especially by people like Emelita.
01:24 [Music]
01:27 Roselina, her fourth child, was born in September 2020.
01:31 She was only one year old.
01:33 She started with a fever.
01:35 Then she got sick.
01:38 That's when we found out about the hospital that she was in.
01:42 Since she passed away, our house has been so sad.
01:47 It's like it's different.
01:49 [Music]
01:56 On June 26, her grandson, Sofia, was born.
01:59 He was only four years old.
02:01 [Music]
02:04 The doctor said, "Don't be shocked because of his condition."
02:12 He's already 50.
02:15 [Music]
02:20 He apologized to me.
02:22 He said, "Sorry, Mama. I won't be a burden to you anymore.
02:26 I'll go to sleep. I won't wake up."
02:30 [Music]
02:34 Suddenly, he lost his platelet count.
02:37 [Music]

02:53 Another disease from the plague is Zika,
02:56 a strain that spread to Africa and South America.
03:00 It's also a virus that affects the fetus of a woman who was infected with the virus.
03:07 It can cause severe birth defects.
03:11 Because of the Zika virus,
03:13 the baby is born with microcephaly,
03:16 which means the baby's brain is small.
03:19 That's why on February 2016,
03:21 the WHO declared the Zika-related microcephaly
03:27 as a "no-go zone" for the baby.
03:30 [Music]
03:40 According to the Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health,
03:43 as of February 2023,
03:45 78 cases of Zika have been reported in the country since 2015.
03:51 In the National Capital Region, or NCR, the highest number of cases of Zika virus have been reported.
03:57 [Music]
04:02 Richella, a housewife, is one of those who contracted Zika in 2017.
04:07 "She has a cough. I had rashes.
04:11 My eyes were bleeding and I had a fever."
04:15 She didn't bring anyone with her, but she was still worried, especially for her child.
04:19 "I was also scared.
04:21 Not only for me, but also for my baby, who was only 4 years old.
04:26 I was also at home for almost 2 weeks."
04:30 [Music]
04:38 I also went to Barangay Benedicto in Haro District in Iloilo City,
04:43 where 3 cases of Zika were reported from one household.
04:48 In the province, the first case of Zika was also reported in the country.
04:52 In Pasay, or Iloilo, almost the same solution was found.
04:57 "It includes fogging and misting.
05:02 This is usually done in 2 to 3 cycles."
05:06 [Music]
05:09 "City Health cleaned up the area of the house
05:14 so that the stagnant water could be removed."
05:17 [Music]
05:23 "One of the steps that Barangay Benedicto is doing here in Haro District in Iloilo City
05:29 to avoid the spread of diseases such as Zika or Dikaya-i-Dengue
05:33 is the regular cleanup drive."
05:37 [Music]
05:38 "That is also the repeated reminder of the Health Department
05:41 to maintain a clean environment, especially in places where fog can be seen."
05:46 [Music]
05:48 But what if this is not about spreading diseases?
05:52 [Music]
05:53 The Health Department explained the possible effects of prolonged heat.
05:58 "Because of climate change, the temperature rises,
06:02 our dry spells get longer, and indirectly, it leads to more breeding sites."
06:08 [Music]
06:10 "During the past few months, the word 'rain' is becoming more frequent,
06:14 and 'hot' is quickly becoming dry due to the flood,
06:18 leaving water where mosquitos and other insects live."
06:25 "This is the reason why the number of cases of vector or mosquito-borne diseases
06:32 like dengue, even Zika, is increasing."
06:35 In hot countries, the effects of climate change are increasing.
06:41 [Thunder]
06:43 But because of the increasingly hot weather,
06:46 places where some mosquitoes with diseases can live have been added,
06:52 like the former cold places that are slowly becoming hot.
06:57 [Music]
07:06 People's activities that are affected by climate change
07:10 and the consequences of it are also becoming more frequent, like wildfires.
07:14 In the case of wild animals,
07:16 they may be brought closer to the former places of people.
07:22 [Music]
07:32 There are also theories that there are former diseases that are alive or returning
07:38 from the melting of ice due to the intense heat.
07:43 [Music]
07:48 The effects of climate change in our health should also be taken into consideration
07:54 because in the increasingly hot world,
07:57 there are lives that may be affected or spread.
