00:15 I'm Tetris Kelly for Billboard News. It's Tuesday, August 29th,
00:21 and yesterday I helped announce one of the coolest projects in music.
00:25 The world's next biggest girl group is on the way, and Billboard has all the details.
00:30 [music]
00:35 Super labels Geffen and Hive have teamed up to bring you a global group of epic proportions.
00:41 [music]
00:45 Hive chairman Bang Si-hyuk and Geffen CEO John Janik kicked off the announcement of their joint venture.
00:52 And yesterday I hosted a panel discussion with the team behind the debut Dream Academy,
00:57 a training and development program looking to form a girl group comprised of young women from around the world.
01:03 There's going to be fans right from the beginning in multiple countries all around the world
01:07 helping us pick the final, pick the artist to form the group.
01:10 They then introduced us to the 20 young women from around the world competing for a spot in the girl group
01:16 being formed at the end of the program.
01:19 Starting on September 1st, you'll see the women from Korea, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, the U.S.
01:25 and so many more countries show their skills on YouTube.
01:28 [music]
01:36 Over the span of 12 weeks, we'll see the girls go through the audition process
01:40 and fans will be able to vote via TikTok and Weverse for who they want to ultimately end up in the group.
01:46 The results of the audition process will be announced live on November 17th.
01:50 Not only that, they're capturing the entire process to air in a docuseries on Netflix next year.
01:56 Who's your initial bias? Let us know in the comments.
01:59 You can see more details on the debut Dream Academy and the full list of contestants on Billboard.com.
02:05 They're using the K-pop model to build that girl group just like our next Kings, A.T.
02:10 [music]
02:22 I'm so happy to have you here. Let's talk about the charts.
02:25 So when the World EP2 Outlaw came out, it hit number one on our top album sales chart.
02:30 So that means it wasn't just streaming, people wanted this whole album to themselves.
02:35 So why do you think they wanted the full project?
02:38 I think this album is like whole different A.T.'s, I think.
02:43 So that's why many A.T.s and many audience want to get some new piece of our album.
02:52 Yeah, I think that's one of the reasons.
02:53 So your fans, every time they talk about you guys, they're most excited about your performance skills
02:59 and how you guys tear up the stage.
03:01 So what do you think is different about A.T.'s performance versus everyone else?
03:06 I think we're full of energy.
03:11 I think we can see good teamwork on stage, so I think that's what gives us good energy.
03:20 Well, you guys show your teamwork, but your fans show their teamwork as well.
03:24 Did you guys see the viral video of them doing "Bouncy" all together?
03:28 There were so many fans doing the choreography.
03:31 So how did it feel to see that support?
03:33 I think it's A.T. that can show the energy of A.T.
03:39 It's amazing that A.T. can do our choreography.
03:45 I think we're determined to make more cool choreography.
03:53 For the full interview, head to Billboard.com.
03:56 Time to talk about one of my favorite new bops, Selena Gomez's new song "Is a Mood."
04:02 But could it be about The Weeknd?
04:04 Selena has answered the question on all her fans' minds after she dropped her latest
04:08 track "Single Soon."
04:10 Is it about her relationship with The Weeknd?
04:19 Ever since Selena released "Single Soon," fans have been speculating about the song.
04:23 And is it about her ex, The Weeknd?
04:25 Well, Selena set the record straight, replying to a Hollywood Life Instagram post about the
04:30 fan theory.
04:31 She sang, "Couldn't be more false."
04:33 The two stars dated back in 2017, and some listeners thought lyrics in "Single Soon"
04:38 were disguised as nods to Abel.
04:40 For instance, the lines, "I don't wanna see you tear, and The Weeknd's almost here,"
04:47 has fans thinking she is referencing her ex's stage name in his 2020 hit "Save Your Tears,"
04:52 which is also rumored to be about Selena.
04:55 Regardless of who the song is about, Selena just wanted to give us something to jam out
04:58 for for the end of summer, and we're loving it.
05:01 We've got more new music on the way, and the women of hip-hop are promising to keep
05:05 us fed.
05:06 Nicki, Cardi, Megan, oh my!
05:10 The women of rap are all busy with new releases, and we're breaking down all you need to
05:14 hear.
05:15 Okay, Nicki!
05:16 The hip-hop queen released a snippet of new pop-leaning record "Last Time I Saw You"
05:24 via TikTok.
05:25 Her Pink Friday sequel is slated to drop this November.
05:35 Cardi B is also ready to jump back into the game.
05:38 She graces the new issue of Vogue Mexico and Latin America, and shared an update on her
05:43 first album in five years, saying, "I'm not going to release any more collaborations.
05:47 I'm going to put out my next solo single.
05:50 Right now I'm working on the cover art and ideas for the next record, because it's
05:55 definitely coming up."
05:56 And what about Cardi's WAP collaborator Megan Thee Stallion?
06:00 After Victoria Monet dropped "Oh My Mama," it was printed that she was considering Megan
06:04 for a remix.
06:05 She posted, "Not considering.
06:08 I am mother f---ing wishing and hoping we gotta prove that we are two separate people."
06:13 Well we would definitely be here for that.
06:24 Before we wrap things up, John Baptiste taught us some of his favorite slang.
06:27 Hello, it's John Baptiste and this is my favorite slang from New Orleans.
06:40 Wazzam, Wally.
06:42 Wazzam.
06:43 It's what's happening.
06:45 What's happening.
06:46 Wazzam.
06:47 You see the progression?
06:52 Wazzam.
06:55 Another one you might hear me say is, "Where you at?"
07:00 Where are you at?
07:03 It's like philosophical too.
07:04 It's like, "Where you at?"
07:06 Not just, "Where are you?"
07:08 But just like, "Where you at?"
07:11 This is like, it's not really a slang, but people say it, "Lizzie, le bon temps roule."
07:18 People say it in New Orleans sometimes means, "Let the good times roll."
07:22 That's some of my favorite New Orleans slang.
07:26 That's it for today.
07:27 Make sure you come back tomorrow for my interview with K-pop newcomer Leo.
07:31 I'm Tetris Kelly and this is Billboard News.
