00:00 Meantime, a new approach to combating illegal marijuana cultivation, manufacturing and sales
00:05 is set to begin to try and cut down on crime in local neighborhoods across the state.
00:10 Attorney General Rob Bonta was in Fresno County Tuesday where he announced the Cannabis Administrative
00:15 Prosecutor Program, saying California still has an illegal cannabis use problem.
00:21 California is known throughout the country as a leader in the world of cannabis.
00:27 We were the first state to establish a medicinal marijuana program way back in 1996 and the
00:35 fifth state to legalize adult use cannabis in 2016.
00:38 We have the largest safe, legal and regulated cannabis market in the entire world.
00:45 Despite that, illegal, unlicensed cannabis activities continue, unfortunately, to flourish.
00:55 This new program allows cities and counties to enforce the state's laws by treating illegal
01:00 cannabis activity as a public nuisance or land use issue.
01:04 Now, by doing that, Bonta says it will enable local jurisdictions to shut down illegal operations
01:09 in a matter of weeks instead of months or years that are common with civil and criminal
01:14 enforcement.
01:15 The DOJ says the program will be funded with the fines and settlements collected through
01:19 this program.
