00:00The Cowboy G-Man in Chinaman's Chance, starring Russell Hayden as Pat Gallagher and Jack
00:10California, 1872. The big gold rush bonanza was just about played out. Miners now have
00:19to bend their backs, 49ers. In the diggings, no one could rework old claims or slag heaps
00:25better than the unoffending pig. The less energetic white miners envied his success.
00:30Laws and taxes aided outlaws who were preying on the Orientals. The leader of the outlaw
00:34band was a cunning, ruthless killer, a masked assassin who left his card at the scene of
00:38every raid, a crudely drawn picture of a white dragon. Not knowing where to turn for help,
00:55one Chinese sent an anonymous letter asking for help from his government, the United States
00:59government in Washington. And in August of the year 1872, his government responded.
01:04The town of Volcano seemed to be the trouble center, and that made it the logical place
01:08to start our investigation. Crockett, my partner, was detailed for undercover assignment.
01:38The district mining commissioner in Volcano was a Mr. Evans. His off was my starting point.
01:50Commissioner Evans? With you in a minute. I want to get these figures down before I forget
01:54them. Now, can I help you? Yes, my name's Gilman, sir, the card. Mining engineer and
02:04geologist. I represent the Hydro Oral Company. We've developed a new way of hydraulic mining
02:09and a big scale. Is that so? We think we can operate the worked over claims at a profit.
02:15Naturally, we want the best claims we can get, sir. Naturally. I'm told that you might
02:21be able to help us, sir. Of course, it would be profitable for everybody. You understand,
02:30of course, I can't do anything officially. Naturally. The Chinese are about the best
02:35at smelling out a claim that can still be worked. They are? Well, if they've got a paying
02:41claim, they wouldn't want to sell it, would they? You don't know much about our state.
02:46We have some convenient laws for just such circumstances. Oh. You go see Roberts. The
03:00assessor and tax collector. Give him that note. Thank you, sir. Do you think Mr. Roberts
03:05will be able to help me, then? Yes, if anybody can. Thank you. You certainly won't regret
03:09it. Yes, sir. In Roberts' office, Roberts and Deputy Marshal Bellows explain the convenient
03:21laws. Convenient for white miners, that is. Most of the claims are right around here.
03:30Begging honorable pardon, but humble servant Ling Yee has come to plead justice for friend
03:35Sung Lai. Oh, you do. Chongga, always he has paid his taxes. Yesterday, Roberts visited
03:44claim and took everything. Ah Chongga. Today, he was given tax assessment much higher than
03:52before. Sure. You know, anybody who pans as much gold from his claim as the outlaws took
03:58naturally has to pay a higher tax. But did not say Roberts took much gold from Sung Lai.
04:05No. Well, the talks all over town. They say he has the richest claim in the district.
04:11Why then, day after robbery, was higher tax levied? Well, because those are my orders.
04:17Now, get out. You better drop that, or the state will have a murder charge against you,
04:27too. Thank you, friend. He should not have done this. Well, after a display like that,
04:34you can tell him to cough up his taxes by tonight, or I'll run him off his claim. He
04:38will be surprised. Thanks. Chinese. Does he work for you? Ling Yee? No. He's just their
04:52spokesman, you see. Most of them don't speak English. The commissioner tells me you're
04:57interested in claims for hydraulic mining. That's right. That should be simple. Just
05:03pick out the claims you want. The deputy and I grab them for you. As simple as that. Just
05:09like Sung Lai's. That's right. Like Sung Lai's. But suppose they sue me. Try to get them back.
05:16That's good. The Chinese take you to court? You see, in California, Chinese can't testify
05:24in court in any case involving a white man. You mean to tell me a Chinese can't take an
05:30oath or give a testimony? Exactly. Now, let's suppose we get 30 percent of all the claims
05:37we grab. 30 percent? Yes. Of course, 10 percent of that is yours. Mine? Why? Because then
05:50we can trust each other better. Especially when we're all partners. That's a good idea.
05:56See you later. I couldn't get over the layout. A Chinese couldn't testify against a white
06:06man. Besides, if Ling Yee was working with the tax collector or the white dragon, the
06:12other Chinese didn't have a Chinaman's chance. Meantime, I was a Chinese coolie. I was following
06:23through on the other part of our plan, hoping I could make contact with our unknown friend,
06:29the one who sent the letter and the broken coin. Well, I was contacted, all right, by
06:36a long knife against my throat. I had to admit, they had a point. Apparently, I'd violated
06:43some rules. But since I didn't know a word of Chinese, I couldn't find out which one.
06:49Very true. But, uh, me good American, uh, very good American, uh, very good American,
07:13speak only American. Most commendable. Also prefer to speak English as citizen of this
07:19great country. Release him. Oh, thanks, uh, um, name is Ling Yee, advisor to all Volcano Chinese.
07:33How are you called? Who, me? Um, you who? Oh, of imminent who family of Peking. Then we are
07:44distant cousins. Cousins, uh, yes, uh, uh, cousin, uh, what was idea of, uh, uh, because as Americans
07:52say, you are claim jumper. Oh, no, no, uh, everything deserted. Uh, wouldn't jump claim,
08:00thought nobody wanted. Your innocence is touching, cousin who. The owner, Hao Tan,
08:06was getting tax money to prevent seizure by the state. Oh, no, no, very sorry, very sorry,
08:13Ying Lee. You who wouldn't jump claim, no, no. Believe you, cousin who. Now, shall we partake
08:21of food together? Ah, Ying Lee, you who very happy partake of food with you. Heavenly rice.
08:38Heavenly tea. Heavenly, uh... Why, I'll be off.
09:38Ying Lee, you who not very hungry. Who, she? Oh, not who, she. Who, she was mother. This is daughter
09:46Lotus Leaf. Oh. What is cause of jubilation? It is normal reaction of girl who has just become engaged.
10:02Engaged, to who? To you. Who, my brother? No, to you, you who? To me, you who? Oh, yes, you who.
10:13You have just consented to marry my daughter. Oh, I see, that is what I say. I would give thousand
10:20dollars. That's right, that's right. What's right? You must pay me thousand dollars for my daughter.
10:25Oh, so sorry, Ying Lee. You who cannot pay thousand dollars, bloke, will be forced to call back men who
10:32escorted you here to carry out original intention. Oh, you mean... Precisely. As the Confucius say, I have
10:45put foot into it up to here. Confucius also say, you have said mouthful.
10:56Pretending to be looking for good claims, I covered the volcano area inch by inch. I grabbed every Chinese
11:03miner I could find, showed him the letter and the broken coin.
11:23It didn't take long to see I was getting nowhere. I had a feeling some of the Chinese knew a lot more than they were
11:28telling, but they were afraid to talk to any white man. I didn't blame them much after what they'd been through.
11:40I knew my chances of finding the other half of the coin were getting pretty slim, but the Chinese who owned this
11:47claim wasn't just afraid to talk. He couldn't. He was dead, murdered. There was a dagger stuck in the sideboard of the
11:54wagon. This was the first time I'd seen a white dragon's calling card.
12:08So, quickly we meet again. Ling Yi. These men work for you? White man's justice ignores Chinese. Thus we make our own justice.
12:19What do you mean? You're free to go now. But if you're again caught on Chinese claim, justice will be swift and sure.
12:31Are you sure you didn't draw that dragon?
12:49You getting no place to go? Papa San wants you home, chop chop.
13:01Chop chop.
13:13Uh, green man, plenty hungry. You got, um, sukiyaki?
13:21Chow mein?
13:25You understand?
13:28Beef?
13:30Yeah, chop chop.
13:35There you are, sir.
13:38Um, no charge.
13:42One moment, sir, please.
14:00Shampoo or haircut?
14:04Shampoo.
14:06You a miner?
14:08No, me over 21.
14:10No, no, I mean, you dig gold?
14:13Oh, dig plenty gold.
14:15Oh, good, fine, fine.
14:25I seem to remember that head of skin.
14:27You do?
14:29Where from?
14:31I don't know, but it'll come back to me. Um, that'll be five dollars in advance, honorable sir.
14:38Five dollars? Sign say flea shampoo.
14:42We don't shampoo any fleas in here.
14:44Oh, oh, no, sign say.
14:46Yeah, yeah, sign say, uh, free shampoo, yes. Free polish, no.
14:52Oh, oh, me no pay. Me no pay five dollars. Me no pay five dollars. Me go.
14:57You go. I have much more important work to do.
15:00Oh.
15:23Oh, what you do?
15:26Shhh. Washing for gold.
15:29Oh, you mean you mining hair for gold?
15:32Sure. I get five to ten dollars in dust from a good head of hair.
15:36Oh, sure.
15:38How else could I afford to give free haircuts and shampoos?
15:41Oh.
15:43Am I in business for my health?
15:45You don't look like it.
15:47Now, now, you promise you no tell other Chinese coolies?
15:49Oh, no. I no tell other Chinese coolies if you pay me.
15:54Oh.
15:56All right, I pay you.
15:58How much?
16:00I pay you a dollar a head.
16:02What I do with bodies?
16:04You, you very funny Chinese.
16:07You very unclever barber.
16:09If you do not pay me, I send for Stoney Crockett.
16:15Stoney Crockett?
16:17Oh, no. Stoney Crockett. Stoney Crockett. Oh, no, no.
16:24White Dragon.
16:26You understand? You better dig up that gold, China boy.
16:29Yes. Yes, I get for you. There.
16:33This is all? He'd be better off doing a lot.
16:36Yes, you're right. Very poor claim.
16:39You!
16:46Let's go. We've got the gold.
16:53Let's go.
17:10Many thanks.
17:12Why did they shoot you?
17:14You gave me your gold.
17:16I saw his face.
17:18I know who he is.
17:20The White Dragon.
17:21Yes.
17:23Oh, white man.
17:25Why do you help Chinese?
17:27Because I'm a government agent.
17:29I was sent here to help you.
17:31I wonder if you would ever come.
17:36Can you send this letter?
17:41No.
17:43Twin brother, Ling Yi, wrote letter.
17:46Then Ling Yi, your twin brother?
17:48I'm Ling One.
17:50Ling Yi is leader of our people.
17:54He wrote our government for help.
17:57Ling Yi, your brother.
18:00Yes.
18:02Ling Yi will be pleased to know that you have come.
18:12He died before he could tell me the dragon's name.
18:15But at least I knew who sent the message.
18:18Ling Yi.
