00:00 How about this? A local teacher has gone viral posting videos on Tiktok.
00:04 23 ABC's Dominic Lavigne sat down with her to talk about how she's adapting
00:08 her lessons to the modern age, stepping into the classroom for another school
00:13 year. Lauren Chela returned to her makeshift studio, and this podium is
00:18 where it all started. And the French are about to mess around and find out
00:22 and don't take time for the cheese. Me. Then, after the pandemic hit, we were
00:27 just at home with with nothing to do. And I really didn't have a way to,
00:30 like, reach or connect with my students. Encouraged by her students
00:34 and fueled by the pandemic, Chela began filming Tiktoks in her classroom, and I
00:39 only had a minute to do it. So I tried to, you know, just hit it really fast,
00:42 and it blew up. It got over a million views. Just her and a phone after
00:47 school talking about the Russian Revolution. So it's 1917 and czar
00:52 Nicholas the second just, like, cannot pick a struggle like Roman off the
00:55 law bearer on God, and she kept filming them until her students started
00:59 watching them. One of those students, Juan Cario, saw her videos and says her
01:03 engaging lessons made the class fun. At first, it was kind of hard because I
01:08 wasn't really interested in history. But Miss Chela has, uh,
01:12 made it easier. Juan said his classmate Jonathan Hernandez one video for the
01:17 first time, and he says he enjoyed watching her videos before class to
01:21 know what to expect. No, I always thought it was just like a boring class
01:25 until, like, till I had her class. Yeah, she was, uh, she was new way how to
01:29 make it.
01:30 Um, like our language, according to a 2022 Gallup pool, 44% of teachers
01:36 experienced burnout, and that's something that Sheila Delgado, an
01:40 economics teacher at McFarland High, says having a teacher like Miss Chela
01:44 helps her get through the struggles. Yes, definitely. There's days that are
01:47 more challenging than others. But I feel when you have support and you have
01:52 those, um,
01:53 people like Miss, like Lauren, she just makes your day a lot better. And
01:59 Chela hopes to inspire kids in the predominantly Latino community in
02:02 McFarland to let them know that they can do anything. People can look down on
02:06 you depending on where you're from. And I hate that that could happen to our
02:10 kids here. So what I want to do is just show them that they can do anything.
02:14 And Chela plans to continue making Tic Tacs to help her students learn
02:18 history in McFarland. I'm Dominique Lavigne a 23 bc News connecting you
