Family strandard at Skegness Railway Station head home

  • last year
A family of 14 left strandard at Skegness Railway Station due to industrial action by ASLEF - the train drivers union - are heading home to Manchester. After a week's stay in Butlin's they had missed the information regarding the industrial action sent out by East Midlands Railway but were saved by the local community who arranged with the help of the vicar, the Rev Richard Holden, to put them up for the night in a church hall.

00:00 Now we've just had a little cheer because the train is coming onto the station.
00:04 Thomas, you were determined to get on this first train out of Skegness this morning, weren't you?
00:09 Yeah, how long have you been here?
00:12 Since 8 past 7 this morning, a couple of hours.
00:15 Oh wow, so you know yesterday when we left you, you had no idea where you were going to stay.
00:22 That's right, yeah.
00:23 Um, what happened?
00:24 Well everyone rallied round, got us a community centre to stay in.
00:29 Everyone was lovely.
00:30 Thanks to St Clement's, Archer, and two PCSOs that bent over backwards to help us.
00:40 Yeah, they went to the hospital and got you some bedding, didn't they?
00:46 Yeah, yeah.
00:46 Yeah, so you know it was a bit of a shock when you arrived at the station yesterday
00:52 to find that industrial action unit was closed, wasn't it?
00:56 Yeah.
00:58 I mean, East Midlands, they have advertised the industrial action,
01:04 but did it just not filter through up to Manchester?
01:07 No, no, no, no.
01:08 We'd already checked and there was nothing locked down or anything until the last minute.
01:14 Well, I know you're all keen to get back on the train.
01:18 You're certainly going to have some stories to tell when you get back, aren't you?
01:21 Yeah.
01:22 But did you enjoy your week's holiday, Bobby?
01:25 Yeah, most of it, yeah. We always do, we always do.
01:27 Yeah, well, hopefully you have a safe journey back.
01:31 There is some industrial action along the line.
01:38 It's a reduced service, but hopefully you get back okay and we'll try and catch up with you soon.
01:46 Okay, thank you.
01:47 Thanks a lot.
