00:00 Hello and welcome to the WrestleTalk News, I'm Luke Owen and this is Wrestling News.
00:09 Apologies, I'm actually just catching up on other real world news.
00:12 I know it's not as important as the Wrestling News, but it is good to stay abreast of other
00:19 things that are happening on this strange little planet of ours.
00:22 So what does The Independent have to say?
00:26 Donald Trump to CM Punk is 2023 the year toxic men finally get their comeuppance?
00:33 Well I don't know about you, but I didn't have Punk being in the same headline as Donald
00:36 Trump on my 2023 bingo card.
00:38 CM Punk to WWE Hall of Fame confirmed.
00:41 Speaking of Punk, and there's still some fallout to come from his firing from All Elite
00:44 Wrestling over the weekend.
00:46 When we did our Breaking News video and our live podcast about this story on Saturday,
00:49 we asked fans to be cool with each other in the comments.
00:53 Tribalism is a big thing in wrestling, for whatever reason, and there's even sub-sections
00:58 of tribalism within those tribes.
01:00 For example, there are literally AEW fans arguing with other AEW fans about which show
01:05 is better between Dynamite and Collision, and a lot of that is fuelled by the pro-punk
01:10 crew and the anti-punk lot.
01:12 And to your enormous credit, you were cool.
01:15 Because you are cool.
01:16 Look at you.
01:17 You're watching a near 40 year old man wearing a suit jacket and a Spiderman bowtie talk
01:21 about wrestling while you're sat on a toilet avoiding doing your job.
01:25 But there have been a lot of arguments on permanent hellscape that is Twitter, and it's
01:29 led to an AEW star stepping in.
01:31 During the pre-show for All Out, Hangman Page took part in the over-the-budget Battle Royal
01:36 which he ended up winning.
01:37 And while his generous donation of Tony Khan's money to the public school system was lovely,
01:41 it's not what Twitter was talking about.
01:44 It was instead this woman giving Page the middle fingers.
01:48 Look, we've all been to wrestling shows, we often throw middle fingers to wrestlers
01:52 we either don't like or to the heels that we're not supposed to like.
01:55 But for whatever reason, perhaps because it came so close after Punk's firing, this lady
02:00 became the target of an online abuse campaign which included her being sent death threats.
02:06 Now that I'm saying it out loud, and you're hearing those words being said out loud, it
02:11 sounds preposterous doesn't it?
02:13 This wrestling fan is being sent death threats, but doing something all wrestling fans do
02:18 at every wrestling show since time immemorial.
02:21 The fan in question has been accused of being a CM Punk mark, and she has tweeted that she
02:26 has decided for her own safety that she's no longer going to attend wrestling shows.
02:30 F***ing ridiculous.
02:31 And so ridiculous is it that Hangman Page himself took to Instagram to tell fans, "Please
02:36 do not harass other wrestling fans on the internet.
02:39 I would be very disappointed in you and you should say sorry."
02:42 Hangman Page once again being the only adult in the room.
02:46 So yeah, don't be a dick, people.
02:48 Just let wrestling fans enjoy wrestling shows.
02:51 But if you thought the CM Punk news was done and dusted for today, you've got another
02:55 thing coming.
02:56 Following Punk's firing over the weekend, a lot of fan speculation began on where Mr.
03:00 Phil could end up.
03:01 He has stated in the past that he wants to do the G1 or perhaps he'll just never wrestle
03:06 again.
03:07 But there is always a chance that he'll end up back in WWE, with plenty of online discourse
03:11 about this year's Survivor Series being booked for Chicago, the hometown of CM Punk.
03:17 Dave Meltzer has said on Wrestling Observer Radio that there could be a chance WWE would
03:21 take Punk back, as it would be a huge signing for them.
03:24 And Mike Johnson of PWInsider has said that there has been some discussion about rehiring
03:29 Punk by Top Brass in the company, although they appear to be 50/50 on the idea as Johnson
03:35 writes some are willing to roll the dice as there's a chance to make big money, while
03:39 others are adamantly against the idea.
03:43 Fightful Slate also reported that pitches were made for Punk to return to WWE last year,
03:47 which would have included being a surprise Rumble entrant and going into a feud with
03:50 Kevin Owens for WrestleMania.
03:53 But there is a question in the air about how long Punk's non-compete clause is, which
03:57 would prevent him from wrestling for another company until that expires.
04:01 We've seen in the past with WWE firings that that's usually 90 days for main roster
04:05 talents and 30 days for NXT contracts.
04:09 Brandon Thurston of WrestleNomics asked Tony Khan about this at the All Out press conference,
04:13 which TK politely refused to get into, and Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select has also
04:18 said that he's asked around and cannot find an answer either.
04:23 The difference between WWE's usual non-compete timeframes - 90 and 30 days - is that those
04:28 people were just released.
04:30 CM Punk, as we know from the press release, was fired with cause.
04:34 And while we can't take this as legal fact, Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio
04:38 that, in WWE at least, if someone is fired or released with cause, their non-compete
04:44 would be an entire year.
04:46 If that is the case, it wouldn't be a Survivor Series return for Punk this year, not even
04:50 a RumbleMania or Summerslam return, as he wouldn't be able to sign with WWE until
04:55 next September.
04:56 But I think that's enough Punk for one day.
04:59 Because we've actually got some nice news for a change!
05:02 Zoe Stark has made quite a name for herself since being called up to the main roster during
05:06 the 2023 draft, aligning herself with Trish Stratus and picking up a win over Becky Lynch
05:12 - and has certainly been given more to work with than some of the other call-ups like
05:15 Odyssey Jones, Apollo Crews and Zion Quinn.
05:17 Bet you didn't even remember they were called up, did you?
05:19 And this has not gone unnoticed by WWE, according to Fightful Select who report that Stark has
05:24 been getting great reviews from talent she's worked with on the main roster in addition
05:28 to several backstage for how she's handled the call-up and the duties associated with
05:33 it.
05:34 And WWE were impressed with how she came back from her knee injury and did not miss a beat
05:39 in the ring - which led to her getting a shot in the Rumble, and her good showing there
05:44 put her on track to a main roster call-up.
05:46 Now isn't that so much nicer to have a nice bit of news for a change?
05:51 I certainly enjoy the nice news.
05:53 Now what have we got next?
05:54 Oh my god, what did they do to Bon Wagner on NXT?!
05:57 NXT has been getting a lot of praise as of late, and quite rightly so.
06:00 It's doing a lot better by its women's division than both Raw and Smackdown, and
06:03 it's making some big stars out of names like Carmelo Hayes, Braun Breaker and Tiffany
06:07 Stratton.
06:08 Who, by the way, is going to defend the NXT Women's Championship next week against Becky
06:13 Lynch.
06:14 WrestleTalk.com's Amanda Savage popped me on Twitter this morning when she compared
06:17 NXT to a Muppet Baby version of the Attitude Era, and I'm not sure I've heard a more
06:22 accurate description of it.
06:24 That's not a slam on NXT by the way, it's actually massive praise for the start of Muppet
06:29 Baby's rules.
06:30 And last night's episode showed why more and more people are finding themselves paying
06:33 more and more attention to the developmental brand once again, as Braun Breaker did a huge
06:38 injury angle with Bon Wagner, who revealed on a recent episode of NXT that he needed
06:42 major surgery on his forehead when he was just 15 months old.
06:47 Breaker attacked Wagner and smashed his head with the steel steps, and the feed cut to
06:52 black so viewers could only just hear the carnage and the commentary freaking out.
06:58 It was an incredibly well done angle, and in the building it was sold seriously with
07:03 a big stretcher job and blood, as seen here in photos shared by a fan in attendance Debbie
07:09 Deans 8.
07:10 But that does mean it's now time for my NXT 1 minute 1 review.
07:14 So 1 minute 1 review.
07:15 I mean I suppose it is 1 review.
07:17 It's 1 minute 1 take.
07:18 There you go.
07:19 It actually shows how much of a 1 take it is.
07:20 I got that wrong.
07:21 Oh I don't need to turn my airplane light off.
07:22 Hold on one second.
07:23 Right let me get my clock ready.
07:24 Timer, 1 minute on the clock.
07:30 Right ok.
07:31 Come on British wrestling legend Kendo Nagasaki believes in you.
07:34 So does a few other people, including Xavier Woods.
07:37 Let's get this done.
07:39 3, 2, 1, let's a go.
07:41 Tiffany Stratton retained her title by beating Keanu James, and Becky Lynch challenged her
07:45 to a match next week.
07:46 Ilja Dragunov beat Oro Mensah in a very good match and got into an argument with Wesley
07:50 about who gets the next title shot.
07:51 Carmelo Hayes announced there will be a number one contendership match next week.
07:54 Nathan Fraser did an interview where he talked about glitching through the top rope last
07:57 week and Blair Davenport, Thea Hale, Gigi Dolan and JT Jane did some amateur dramatics
08:04 backstage to set up a match for later on.
08:06 Fraser then beat Duke Hudson in a Group A match for the Global Heritage Cup.
08:09 That means that Fraser, Joe Coffey and Duke Hudson have 2 points each in Group B while
08:12 Akira Tozawa has 0.
08:15 Tyler Bate beat Yabba Dabba Kato and then did a brawl backstage between Roxanne Feroz
08:20 and Keanu James.
08:21 And then Alfa Raleigh beat Dragon Lee with a fast count from special guest referee Don
08:23 Mysterio.
08:24 Butch and Axiom went to a time limit draw in Group A, which means that Butch now has
08:28 3 points, Axiom has 1, Charlie Dempsey and Bates have 0.
08:31 Come on, catch up a little bit.
08:32 There were several skits throughout the night with the tag teams.
08:35 Thea Hale beat Gigi Dolan with interference from Blair Davenport.
08:37 Dana Brooke was upset with Lyle Valkyrie giving advice to the team.
08:40 Crikey.
08:41 Tiffany Stratton called Becky Lynch a bitch and then we got the main event with Brom Breaker
08:43 and Dolph Vaughn.
08:44 Wow, Brom Breaker and Vaughn, Wagner.
08:52 It is a much better show than it was a year ago.
08:58 Too much happens on NXT.
08:59 Anyway, go and watch this Parts of Unknown video about the greatest IC champions, which
09:05 was done by Tempest.
09:06 And it's a very good one.
09:07 And there's also some stuff in there about The Miz, which everyone seems to really love
09:11 when we do.
09:12 I'm actually going to take a selfie of myself on the set here, which I'll then post to my
09:17 Instagram later.
09:18 So go follow me on Instagram and you can see this selfie being there.
09:28 Behind the scenes.
