00:00 Hello and welcome to this week's Movie Math
00:03 where it's nice to see that while Barbenheimer is still THE box office headline
00:08 it ain't the only one...
00:11 Enter Denzel!
00:13 Yes, SAG said Denzel couldn't promote Equalizer 3
00:17 but no problem!
00:18 I mean first off, Denzel has been resentful of doing press for years now
00:23 and the reason he's resentful is that he's had to do it for a very long time
00:27 and he feels he's paid his dues.
00:29 I was in fact talking to a friend of mine on Friday
00:32 about the Equalizer and that Denzel could not promote it
00:36 and my friend joked that Denzel - well, half joked, half told the truth!
00:40 That Denzel has been promoting this type of movie for almost 40 years at this point!
00:46 You know how you feel about Denzel!
00:48 And the answer for most people is
00:50 "Pretty darn good!"
00:51 Because the Equalizer 3 not only delivered an opening on par with the first two entries
00:57 which were pre-pandemic and not during a strike
01:01 but for the holiday frame, Denzel nabbed the second biggest opening for Labor Day Weekend
01:07 EVER!
01:08 EVER!
01:09 Ever since the pandemic forced Disney to roll the dice on this holiday weekend
01:34 I've been saying, "This box office gold here!"
01:37 But Hollywood still couldn't break their old school thinking
01:40 of the last weekend of summer
01:42 you know, that audiences wanted to do outdoor activities.
01:44 They don't want to be stuck in a movie theater
01:46 but hello, it's a long weekend!
01:49 There's plenty of time to be inside and out.
01:52 So you have a movie to start the summer
01:55 they've been doing that for decades
01:57 but why not a movie to end the summer?
01:59 I mean, I think in the past they've tried it with clunkers
02:02 but now you add Equalizer 3's success to Shawn Cheese
02:07 and you have a pattern.
02:08 Hollywood loves a pattern.
02:09 They're like, "Ooo!"
02:10 It just takes one or two people to roll the dice again and have a risk
02:16 so you know, sometimes they do it because they're bold
02:19 sometimes they have no choice
02:20 but a risk is a risk
02:22 and that's how Hollywood usually moves forward
02:25 and then everybody copies that until they run it into the ground
02:27 and someone else is forced to take a risk
02:29 etc, etc...
02:30 Two risks - Barbie and Oppenheimer
02:32 which of course we'll be revisiting during this episode.
02:37 But so as for Labor Day weekend
02:39 I'm telling you, this is a great weekend
02:41 and Sony has already nabbed the next one for Kraven
02:44 again, they were forced because of the strike to move Kraven
02:48 from October, which was copying the success of Joker and Venom in that spot
02:53 now they're like, "Alright, I guess we'll take Labor Day."
02:55 but now they're like, "That was a great idea!"
02:57 But after that, the holiday is wide open
03:01 from then on out.
03:02 So I wouldn't be surprised if some studios run in
03:04 and grab Labor Day weekend 2025 and beyond.
03:07 You wink! I'd take it.
03:09 I would've taken it beforehand!
03:10 I knew that was a hot weekend!
03:12 But of course it also helps, as always, when you release a good movie.
03:16 Equalizer 3's audience scores are top notch
03:20 and I'm not surprised because I saw the movie myself on Friday with family
03:24 and wow, best of the series!
03:26 Equalizer 3 did not need to go that hard
03:29 but I'm so happy that it did!
03:31 So, as good as Liam Neeson's first Taken - I would even say better, in fact
03:35 although that also took place in a European city, as you might recall - Paris, I think.
03:40 But anyway, Liam Neeson's Taken, so long ago
03:44 created the older actor/actioner trend
03:47 that now everybody has one!
03:49 Every actor, and even women have gotten into this
03:51 everybody wants one!
03:52 It's bled over into - Netflix has a whole factory of these things that they're churning out
03:57 but they don't always work out!
03:59 And sometimes they have to go to streaming.
04:01 It's hard for them to work out in theaters.
04:02 I mean even Liam Neeson has run it into the ground
04:05 and he started the whole thing!
04:06 But right now Keanu and Denzel
04:08 both known by just one word, one name
04:10 are the only ones still going.
04:13 And as I said, this one is the best yet.
04:15 And some would argue John Wick 4 was the best yet.
04:18 The last third of it was...
04:20 But I'm not having problems with that movie as you know.
04:22 Alright, so anyway!
04:23 I'm not having problems with that movie as you know.
04:25 Alright, but things are so slow right now
04:28 with the strikes
04:29 that maybe The Expendables 4
04:31 which has been wildly uneven
04:33 maybe they might pull a bloody rabbit out of an exploding hat
04:37 later this month.
04:38 You know, it's kind of cut from a similar cloth as well.
04:40 Jason Statham, we were just talking about how he can still sell movie tickets at least abroad
04:44 after The Meg 2, but
04:46 you know, he's also - he's certainly not the same level of Denzel and Keanu.
04:51 I always - speaking of stars
04:53 I always say, and I continue to say
04:56 that Leo and Denzel are the only remaining true movie stars.
05:00 You can argue with me if you'd like down below in the comments.
05:03 But I think they are.
05:04 And look at Denzel's ability to bring in a strong audience across the board for this movie.
05:10 Impressive!
05:11 Especially as audiences continue to be fragmented
05:14 thanks to a lot of specialty programming.
05:17 We're blaming YOU, streaming!
05:19 They're targeting such specific audiences that everybody's separating into their own camps.
05:23 And as I've said before, that's a real shame.
05:25 Because society moves forward when you're exposed to different things
05:29 often through entertainment at first
05:30 and I would hate to see society lose that.
05:33 But, you know, Equalizer 3's not teaching society anything
05:38 but I mean, I don't know, I like how - look how everybody came together for this movie!
05:42 And they should! It's a phenomenal film.
05:44 So kudos also to Antoine Fuqua
05:47 who I've never seen direct like this.
05:49 I mean he's always been talented, he can get a Hollywood movie done
05:52 but this was inspired.
05:54 Coppola would be proud with how Fuqua shot on location in Italy.
05:58 It was like taking a trip to Italy.
06:00 It was fantastic!
06:02 And boy, to some degree I guess Denzel Adam Sandler'd it, right?
06:06 He's like, "You wanna pay me $20 million to take a vacation in Italy?"
06:09 My friend also pointed out
06:11 that he didn't go on a diet regimen and work out
06:15 he didn't change how he looked one iota.
06:16 But it was still super believable!
06:18 I mean, I wouldn't cross Denzel.
06:20 He was fantastic.
06:21 So good!
06:23 So good!
06:25 So good!
06:27 So good!

07:55 So good!
07:57 So good!
07:59 Hopefully her management continues to do a good job shaping her career because so far very good. That's crucial
08:06 That's crucial. You know a lot of times is what kind of roles can you get which is why actors will make relationships with filmmakers?
08:12 You've seen it happen a lot Emma Stone got a lot of praise for poor things
08:16 In that relationship that she's cultivated over the years, so it's it's important. It's important
08:22 So, you know, I really am excited for at a beer II though
08:25 And yes
08:26 Talk to me a lot of you are like when are you gonna talk about talk to me? Well, here it is
08:30 It's one of a 24's most successful films ever as horror continues to blaze a hot trail at the box office
08:37 Although again here comes Hollywood to overdo it
08:40 Five major horror films are hitting theaters in the next two months right before you know up until Halloween
08:46 Well, you know which of these horror films do you think will thrive and which do you think will flop or do you think maybe?
08:52 There might be room for all of them. That seems like a bit much to me in front of the equalizer
08:57 They played so many horror trailers. It got ridiculous. It was too money
09:01 It was too many, but some people love horror. Are you planning to see all of these in theaters?
09:05 As for box office losers, I'm sorry blue beetle fans
09:09 I liked it too
09:10 But it ain't that movie ain't gonna make it to the century mark Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did did better and it's gonna do better
09:17 Now as many of you tweet me that you finally watch the flash on max and you actually agree that it's pretty good
09:23 Here we have another quality DC movie and I thought Shazam was not bad
09:28 Shazam isn't the level of these two films, but Shazam was not as bad as everyone said so yet another quality DC movie
09:34 That's being ignored in theaters because hardcore and casual fans alike have just been burnt too bad by the brand
09:41 Can Aquaman to bring them back?
09:43 That seems iffy a Superman legacy will this apathy spread to the Batman - even though the first one was a hit
09:50 I'm sure these are the kind of questions that keeps a Z and gun awake at night, but as for Peter Safran, I suspect
09:56 He sleeps pretty well
09:58 granted, of course
09:58 He blocked a vacation pal Zachary Levi's phone number and uni had such a good thing going with their b-movie pipeline
10:06 It was pumping gold right into their coffers
10:09 But now it's clogged after the last voyage of the Demeter and now strays now speaking of horror films
10:15 They're XB. Well, are these B movies the new Exorcist?
10:19 I mean, that's the frickin Exorcist, but as I said way too many horror films right now
10:23 And it is Jason Blum marveling himself right with too much content and then also five night at Freddy's also Jason Blum
10:31 Is from Universal as well at the end of October?
10:34 So those are their next two maybe five nights at Freddy's is definitely a b-movie
10:39 But that's supposed to be simultaneously on Peacock - which seems like it's really gonna undercut that film
10:43 But we'll see if they can get this pipeline
10:46 unclogged
10:48 Okay, let's talk Barben Heimer. There's still plenty to discuss now while Barbie continues to impress
10:54 Ah Oppenheimer fans, let's switch it around for you and go with Oppenheimer first today. It's earned it
10:59 It might have been a little slower, but it's finally starting to cook
11:03 It just passed the ceiling of my prediction and gloat away
11:07 With a strong debut in China. Wow, they China really love this movie
11:12 I'm curious as to why you think that might be I know
11:15 Let's just leave it at that
11:17 So anyway, it gives hope to all the Nolanites who want to see the movie hit a billion that is now a possibility
11:24 It's also now Nolan's biggest film outside of his Batman movies
11:28 the second highest grossing already movie of all time after Joker worldwide and
11:33 Oppenheimer is now the fifth biggest movie of the year domestic and the third worldwide
11:39 unseating Guardians of the Galaxy
11:42 Whoo, then yes, you are reading that right Barbie is number one across the board
11:46 Whoo-hoo domestic and worldwide overtaking Super Mario Brothers, but that's not the only thing she's overtaken
11:53 Barbie also managed to top the final Harry Potter movie. Remember we were like can it be done?
11:58 It can be done and Barbie is now Warner Brothers highest grossing film of all time period. That's incredible
12:05 Oh my goodness
12:06 Do they have the self-control and discipline not to announce any sequels or spin-offs until after awards season?
12:12 Oh, please have them have the discipline so far so good
12:16 Barbie also surpassed the first frozen and now is only just about a hundred million behind frozen 2
12:23 which is the only movie standing in its way of being the highest grossing female centric film of all time and
12:28 Or you know, these are separate categories a female director involved in any capacity
12:35 Co-directing whatever. I mean that's pretty incredible
12:39 I don't know if she I don't know if Barbie can make up a hundred million dollar difference
12:42 But at this point anything seems to be possible
12:45 Especially with a very slow fall movie schedule due to the strikes and all the same type of movie
12:51 Barbie hitting IMAX September 22nd with new post credits footage. Will you go one more time?
12:58 And Warner Brothers being very secretive about that digital release date. They don't want to undercut the film in theaters
13:05 It was supposed to be September 5th. Now. It's looking like September 12th, but even that seems like a maybe I
13:11 Suspect that it won't hit digital at this point until after it's an IMAX theater
13:15 So you might we might be looking at October at this point
13:18 But whenever it debuts on digital that night 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
13:23 We will have our watch along which will be open to all
13:26 Subscribers as long as you have your own copy of the film. Did you pre-order it yet?
13:31 I did now let's head over to streaming starting with Nielsen for the first week of August suits still reign supreme
13:38 At this point it's getting embarrassing for all current content that nothing can come even close to the show from a very long time ago
13:45 The Lincoln lawyer though is really close behind and I just got renewed for a third season
13:50 I don't know how with the strikes going on, but I guess they made a deal with the producers
13:55 and Gardens of the Galaxy volume 3 despite having already debuted on digital still made a big splash when it came to Disney Plus at
14:02 No extra cost and the same as can be said for Super Mario Brothers on peacock, and there's good old bluey
14:08 Yep, I'm gonna talk about bluey. I tweeted about it earlier this week when I was off
14:13 I I finally gave it a whirl and now I totally get the hype. What a great show. I'm serious. I'm totally serious
14:19 I was surprised to see that it focuses so much on the parents
14:23 As much as the kids and the writing is very sharp and very clever
14:27 It's more like an animated sitcom than a kids show in my opinion. I just love it
14:32 I think it's great and there's just so much of it on Disney Plus. That's another reason. It's it's got it's got the numbers
14:39 On and you know because Nielsen continues to do it by minutes instead of dividing
14:43 For shows because Nielsen doesn't have to pay any residuals as we discussed in a recent live stream
14:48 That's why Netflix totally redid their way. They calculate shows
14:52 Because they knew the residuals argument was coming so they took down for minutes and they're like, oh no
14:57 We're gonna do by views
14:58 So it used to be you just had to watch like the first 30 seconds of a show and they were like, oh you watched it
15:04 And now they might have to pay residuals. They're like if you don't get to the credits doesn't count
15:08 Which is so mean who gets to the credits man?
15:12 I would bet you that the majority of people do not get to the credits. That's just the way people consume content online
15:18 All right on you which is crazy to me
15:21 But that's the way it is now on the originals chart some fabulous surprises here
15:26 Look at the LGBT biblical romance good omens powered by the binge drop of season 2 another binge drop
15:33 You know, you're seeing more and more streaming services experiment altering from show to show between binge and weekly
15:40 Netflix isn't doing that and I think Apple almost exclusively weekly, but for everybody else I'm
15:47 Appreciating the experimentation. I've been season 2 of good omens, which I told you
15:52 I feel undercut heartstopper season 2 because they came out so close together and they're similarly themed
15:58 But good omens ends on quite the cliffhanger and I was real nervous
16:02 We weren't gonna find out what happened
16:04 But these numbers make me feel a lot better and prime video has another hit with weekly show the summer
16:10 I turned pretty which is about midway through its second season here
16:13 And so that's that's great for prime video
16:15 Those are both prime video and then while I think Hulu probably expected a bit more with its Futurama revival
16:21 But these were this result is okay, especially since I think it just got underway
16:26 But lookie here. Ooh Apple TV finally gets another series into the top 10
16:31 I mean, it's top 10 originals, but hey instead of overall but besides Ted Lasso and that is the excellent hijack
16:38 What a show you're looking for something to watch go watch hijack incredible stuff
16:43 Which here it's finally wrapped its weekly drop as I just told you Apple TV does weekly drops
16:50 But we were seeing it pop onto this chart because it wrapped and people are starting to binge it. It's an amazing binge
16:56 As a reviewer as a member of the press they give me all the episodes in advance
17:01 So I get to binge even if you don't this is a great binge
17:04 Might we somehow get a season 2 good for Andrew Selva. I hope so. It's interesting
17:10 He produced this show and he revealed that it was part of his first look deal with Apple TV
17:15 Remember I told you first look deals you have to they pay for your office
17:18 Expenses and you have a little bit of money to go and buy the rights to projects and stuff like that like books and etc
17:23 And in exchange they get first dibs on whatever you come up with just like Margot Robbie as a first look deal with Warner Brothers
17:30 That turned out real good for them
17:32 But this was the only thing that Idris Elba was able to get through his deal with Apple TV just one show
17:38 But you know, sometimes that's all it takes
17:40 I mean look at all the flops Margot Robbie's hat and now she's back on top because of Barbie and deservedly so and
17:46 Deserved deservedly so for Idris Elba now his Apple TV deal is done
17:51 And I'm sure they're gonna want to renew not just because they probably want more a hijack
17:55 But because probably everybody else is gonna want him now and he was formerly a big star for Netflix
18:00 So he's probably gonna not only get another deal but an even more lucrative deal. So you just gotta hang in there
18:05 It's very exciting and it's great to see all these actors take control of their own fate
18:09 By also being producers as I've said with Brad Pitt, you got to diversify that portfolio
18:14 Take charge of yourself, which I guess you know a lot of people in the industry
18:18 Aren't so in a position to be so lucky and so that's why unions are there to look out for them
18:23 So that's why the strike is so important and there's peacocks twisted metal at the very bottom
18:28 But hey, at least it charted because you know, it's not on this list secret invasion which had wrapped just the week prior
18:34 No binge viewing for that show. Everybody was like, please let's pretend it never happened
18:39 Finally the movies chart again. Nothing too exciting going on here
18:43 I mean, I guess the most interesting thing is that mega
18:46 Theatrical hits Gardens of the Galaxy volume 3 and Super Mario Brothers did what they were supposed to do
18:52 They trickled down from theaters to digital to now subscription video on demand making a pretty penny the whole way down down
18:58 And that's Disney this time copying Universal and Universal has really been a trailblazer in the theatrical digital
19:05 balancing act
19:07 Netflix dominates the rest of the chart as you can see with a moderate combo of movies that are you know
19:12 Original to old and new theatrical releases from other studios
19:15 I mean these other movies aren't lighting the world on fire
19:18 But at least Netflix and be like we got most of the chart
19:21 As for Netflix's own charts for just last week one piece just came out
19:27 So I'm sorry, you're gonna have to wait a week to get the results on on how it performed
19:31 Although word is it's a juggernaut. So that'll have to be next week
19:35 But for last week, the Monkey King is still the top movie for the second week in a row
19:40 Well, what do you know Heart of Stone has managed to hold three weeks out now making it another action hit for Netflix
19:47 They've gone beyond just the older actor actioner to just any actor
19:51 They'll put any actor in an action or even Adam Sandler with the murder mystery movies and they do great as I said
19:56 Action as I've told you many times
19:59 Action is an international language and those movies tend to do quite well globally
20:03 And Netflix, of course the secret to Netflix Netflix's success is being a global brand with global production
20:10 Although that's one of the reasons they don't want to make a deal because they don't want to have to pay even more people a fair
20:15 Fair wage. Ah, that's horrible
20:17 Alright, so speaking of Adam Sandler his nepo baby movie isn't as big as his own films
20:23 But third place is pretty darn good for trying to launch an acting career for his daughter who so far has done absolutely nothing
20:30 So that's pretty good. And there was really no backlash. So that seems to have actually worked
20:35 With shows the UK Spanish take on the long kiss. Good night. That's totally what that show is
20:41 I was like, what is the show and I looked at the trailer and I was like, oh, that's the long kiss
20:45 Good night. That was a great movie, which nobody remembers which is a real shame
20:48 Anyway, that did very well while people are still interested in the tabloid drama of depth be heard
20:54 Is there a way through though, right or it was tabloid drama a dead end
21:00 That's something Harry and Meghan find themselves wondering these days as well
21:03 Over on I who I went there. All right over on iTunes, Indiana Jones seems to have finally found its audience on digital
21:10 Oh burn where it's just $20. Oh, that's tough
21:14 But interestingly Disney is offering elemental for just $20 as well. Well, most new movies are $25 to buy
21:21 Hmm discount bin who puts their own stuff in the discount bin, but at least it's doing well
21:26 At least at least they're number one and pretty good
21:30 That's rough and a lot of moderate to poor box-office movies are also doing quite well on digital including no hard feelings
21:36 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles three animated movies in the top ten
21:39 Thank you very much as again more and more adults get into the genre or the and it's not a genre into the medium
21:46 So happy about that the Meg - and the last voyage of the Demeter here it is
21:51 So maybe universals be movie pipeline at least has a trickle going as for this coming week in
21:57 Theaters the nun - is the first fall horror movie out of the gate
22:01 How will it do well my big fat Greek wedding three?
22:05 How did they get a third one will try once again to recapture the magic the first film from 20 plus years ago?
22:11 Although I have to say the second one was such a colossal failure. I don't have high hopes for this new one
22:18 No big digital releases. I'm afraid because Barbie bowed out then as for new shows on Thursday Star Trek lower decks
22:26 Season four Wow time does sure does fly. We're like you blink and turn around and they're on a fourth season
22:32 Germany's dear child a thriller miniseries comes out and then Netflix is insanely popular Virgin River
22:40 Remember we were like, how's this diamond? It was like suits from a while ago, but it was current
22:45 But anyway, it's another like how is this doing so well?
22:48 Well, it's season five hits Thursday and on Friday
22:52 I suspect Netflix might have another hit with true crime military series spy ops. I'm not a big true crime fan
22:58 Sometimes I I've there been like moments where I you know what I watched the Murdoch murders thing and I was amazed
23:05 Thanks to body cam footage like how in in the investigation the real investigation you can be I was like this is a game-changer
23:12 for for true crime dog
23:14 documentaries and reality series
23:17 I'm not quite sure how much of this is like a footage or
23:21 Reenactments, but I think the military CIA CIA angle sounds pretty sweet
23:26 I love that stuff one of the best books I ever read was the founding of the CIA
23:30 Well Apple TV starts new series the changeling starring Lakeith Stanfield who is booked and busy these days
23:37 Now sure haunted mansion didn't do well, but he was great in it
23:40 He has this and then the book of Clarence which the trailer I just saw in front of equalizer 3 and I was like
23:47 That looks like a lightning rod, but a really interesting one. So I thought that looked pretty cool
23:52 So that's this week's movie math. What have you been watching?
23:55 What do you plan to watch and how much longer can Hollywood keep getting rosy box-office headlines as the strikes seem to have no end in sight?
24:02 Especially with the Venice Film Festival
24:05 Producing it just happened producing some nice headlines itself and Rotten Tomatoes scores
24:11 especially because they had sag waivers for some actors which I still feel is uncool and
24:17 Then speaking of uncool some backstabbing directors who were like, hey, man that they were saying, you know
24:24 They were trying to say they were they didn't want to choose sides
24:27 They were backing both the studios and the talent and you're like really
24:30 Really?
24:32 All right
24:33 So what are your thoughts share them down below subscribe today?
