Queen’s University has welcomed nine technicians to its workforce as part of the Technician Apprenticeship Pilot Programme, launched earlier this year.
Following a competitive recruitment selection, the nine successful technicians met with colleagues across the university today to learn more about the programme and what it’s like to work at Queen’s. The three-year pilot programme will help the university develop its own workforce, while also providing opportunities for the apprentices to learn while they earn.
The pilot will see the nine apprentices undertake paid employment at the university while also attending the Belfast Metropolitan College to complete an NVQ Level 3 qualification as part of their apprenticeship. Following successful completion of the three year paid programme, the technicians will be offered permanent employment in a more senior role.

00:00 We're very excited to form this new partnership with Belfast Met and the Department of Economy,
00:05 welcoming our level three apprentices on site and into the Queen's community. This is really
00:12 important for us as a civic university, we have committed ourselves to bringing in our new employees
00:18 of all ages, of all disciplines. We're really excited to welcome our nine apprentices into the
00:24 technician community at Queen's. They have all now just about signed on the dotted line and joined
00:30 in our different schools and centres. It's been a fantastic opportunity so far, everybody's been so
00:35 welcoming and so supportive. I applied for it just sort of hoping, god this is something that comes
00:41 around once in a lifetime sort of thing, you know you don't get an opportunity like that. It's so
00:44 comprehensive, it's included with Queen's as well as Belfast Met, so they've given us a massive
00:49 opportunity to get involved with various different parts of Queen's, you know there's different
00:54 locations, people are doing chemistry, physics, biology, so it's really an amazing opportunity
00:58 to have gotten into and I'm absolutely thrilled that I get the chance to start this.
