The Week Ahead with Yorkshire Post features writer John Blow
Transcript
00:00 Hi there, my name's John Blow, I'm from the Yorkshire Post Features team and I'm going to be taking you through some of the things coming up in the week ahead.
00:07 First of all, junior doctors and consultants will hold a joint strike for the first time in the history of the NHS this week in their dispute with the government over pay.
00:16 Consultants had already announced plans to walk out for 48 hours from tomorrow and will be joined by their junior colleagues on Wednesday, who will then continue their own action on Thursday and Friday.
00:28 Staff will work Christmas Day cover basis, meaning emergency care will be provided during the strike, which has been called by the British Medical Association.
00:37 Elsewhere, right-to-roam activists are planning to trespass on the English-Scottish border next weekend as they call for a change in English law that would mean an increase in public access to the countryside.
00:50 Such access, along with wild camping, has been legal in Scotland for 20 years but is unavailable in more than 92% of the English countryside and is only in remote locations, the Right to Roam campaign says.
01:02 They're inviting hundreds of people from both sides of the border in what they call a protest and a celebration on Saturday.
01:10 The Richmond Walking and Book Festival continue throughout the week. Visitors will get the chance to meet authors, discover new writers and attend a programme of morning and evening book events.
01:22 There will also be daily routes for ramblers and serious walkers led by friendly guides keen to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the Yorkshire Dales.
