Extreme meteorologist Dr. Reed Timmer reported from the rocky coast of Peggy's Cove on the night of Sept. 15 as people throughout Nova Scotia braced for the impacts of Hurricane Lee.
Transcript
00:00 The waves are getting bigger and bigger here on Peggy's Cove just on the southern side of Nova Scotia
00:05 just to the south of Halifax
00:07 And this is all ahead of Hurricane Lee that now has maximum sustained winds of 80 miles an hour and these breakers are coming in sets
00:13 High tide is at about 9 30 p.m.
00:16 And we expect these waves to continue increasing in size overnight tonight through tomorrow
00:20 Possibly some of the breakers could even be spraying the lighthouse here right on Peggy's Cove
00:25 And this is an area that was impacted by a hurricane last year as well Hurricane Fiona big winds as well
00:31 It looks like Hurricane Lee might be a little bit weaker than that storm and it's undergoing an extra tropical transition
00:37 Which means that its wind field is expanding dramatically
00:40 So very different than recent hurricanes like Hurricane Adalia or Hurricane Ian where you have an inner eye wall and the storm surge is focused
00:48 Right along that inner eye wall almost like a tsunami like phenomenon
00:51 This one's likely going to be removed from the center a little bit and the stronger winds are going to be removed from the center
00:56 As well, but the onshore flow is expected to increase tomorrow morning
01:00 And it looks like the center is going to be coming very close to the Yarmouth area
01:03 and it's possible that there could be a four to six foot storm surge there with waves on top of that and then as the
01:09 Cyclone passes the winds are going to shift to a westerly direction and that's going to send a tidal bore
01:14 Right up the Bay of Fundy and that's an area that gets some of the largest tides
01:17 Anywhere in the world and it looks like there could be a storm surge as well along the periphery of the Bay of Fundy
01:23 After tropical cyclone Lee passes to the north
