00:00 Especially for my mum.
00:01 So, when I told her that I started to go to the gym,
00:04 she was questioning me,
00:06 "Why are you doing it?
00:08 You want to be a man, is it?"
00:10 So, this is the perception that people always have
00:13 when I told them that I'm involved in these sports.
00:16 Meet Filomena Dexlin Siar,
00:19 the first Sarawakian to win an Asian Bodybuilding Championship title.
00:24 In an interview with FMT,
00:26 Filomena spoke of the numerous barriers she had to overcome
00:30 in realising her sporting aspirations
00:32 because of objections from friends and family.
00:36 However, over time, their initial reluctance faded,
00:40 and they rallied behind her
00:42 while she persevered in pursuit of her goals.
00:45 I sacrificed a lot in terms of time,
00:50 energy, and mental and emotional well-being.
00:56 Financially, you need to spend more to prioritise
01:00 on preparing for your diet.
01:02 Preparing for a competition is not cheap.
01:04 It takes a whole lot to be a successful athlete.
01:09 Filomena, who started relatively late at age 33,
01:13 suffered a major setback in her competitive debut
01:16 after ranking last in a 2018 competition.
01:19 Four months later, under the guidance of coach Melvin Abdullah,
01:23 she bounced back,
01:24 ranking sixth out of 13 contestants
01:27 at the Southeast Asian Championship.
01:29 Earlier this month, aged 40,
01:32 she emerged victorious at the 55th Asian Bodybuilding
01:35 and Physique Sports Championship in Nepal.
01:39 Standing on the winner's podium,
01:41 Filomena said she realised how sports can serve
01:44 as an indispensable tool for fostering national unity.
01:49 So we come from many backgrounds,
01:51 many bangsa and races and agama.
01:53 But when we stand up and represent the country internationally,
01:58 we don't think about that.
02:00 Instead, we think that we are Malaysian.
