00:00From the KK Mart incident, to the debate over the funding of vernacular schools by Boorees,
00:08Malaysians have seen a fair share of controversies in these past 8 months.
00:12But the people have been urged to look beyond politics and fisticuffs and focus on the true
00:16meaning of being Malaysian.
00:25For ordinary folks, unity can be found in moments as simple as this.
00:30Sipping teh tarik at Mamak stalls, eyes glued to the Olympics match on the projector screen.
00:48Former Bukit Bintang MP Lilam Tai said, people across all communities unite through shared
00:53experiences and the celebration of common interests.
00:56Meanwhile, Pusaka founder Edin Khoo recalls supporting the multiracial Selangor football
01:01team in the 70s.
01:02In the Selangor football team, which had some of the greatest names in our footballing history,
01:11Soe Chin An, Arun Mugam, Santok Singh, Moktadari, the support and the love was showered in that
01:18very compact stadium.
01:19The essence of essentially how much we can actually empathize and come together as a
01:28nation irrespective of culture, race, faith.
01:34It's not just them.
01:36Ordinary Malaysians recognize the unifying power of sports too.
01:3919-year-old Shaddad Haidar is proud of all 26 athletes who represented the country in
01:45the Olympic Games.
01:47This year's Merdeka has become more meaningful with Olympics.
01:51All of our Olympians, they did a great job regardless of how you feel, even if they didn't
01:57get a medal of some sorts, right?
01:59At the very least, getting to the Olympics, that's something to be proud of.
02:03Business owner Shazwan Nizam said he has witnessed first-hand how Malaysians have cheered for
02:08their peers on the world stage.
02:11It's not just about sports.
02:13Even singing, if there are Malaysian representatives, many Malaysians will support.
02:18Besides sports, Khoo believes that unity in this country is also built upon the ability
02:23to celebrate each other's cultural traditions.
02:27It's so important to make sure that the traditions, Mak Yong, Wayang Kulit, Wayang Puteri, and
02:32all these things which encapsulate and capture and reanimate our semangat, are never allowed
02:40to fade away.
02:41Everybody is able to lay a claim and say, whatever culture settles in this country is
02:47as much mine as anybody else's.
