00:00 Things I don't understand, part 5.
00:02 Take a look at this island in the South Pacific, or more specifically, this facility.
00:06 This is a detention center on the small island nation of Nauru.
00:09 And I just found out that the Australian government is paying $47.3 million to a private prison
00:13 company to hold asylum seekers there for the next 8 weeks.
00:16 For context, the reason I found this is because I track what companies get contracts on my
00:20 website so that I can invest in those companies before everyone else.
00:23 But this is where things get weird.
00:24 Here in the US, I see the government overpaying for things all the time.
00:27 But this one might just take the cake.
00:28 And here's why.
00:29 If you have a government contract worth $47 million for 8 weeks, how many people do you
00:33 think are at this facility?
00:34 5,000?
00:35 10,000?
00:36 20,000?
00:37 Well, according to the latest figures from the Australian government, 111.
00:40 What this means is that the Australian government is paying $426,000 for each detainee on the
00:44 island for the next 2 months, which is absolutely mind-boggling.
00:47 The fact that there are only 111 people being held at this facility is astounding, considering
00:51 the amount of money that the Australian government is shelling out for each detainee.
00:55 It's obvious that something isn't quite right here, and it'll be interesting to see how
00:58 this story develops further.
