00:00 Idaho murder victim's father claims Brian Koberger
00:02 is enjoying unprecedented privileges in jail.
00:05 The father of one of the four university Idaho students
00:08 fatally stabbed in November, 2022,
00:10 has told Fox News Digital
00:12 that he believes the sole murder suspect, Brian Koberger,
00:15 is receiving special treatment while awaiting trial in jail.
00:18 Koberger has been held without bail
00:20 at the Lata County Jail in Moscow, Idaho,
00:22 since January following his arrest on December 30, 2022.
00:26 Stig Gonkows, whose daughter Kaylee, 21,
00:29 was slain in the attack, said,
00:30 "I've been informed that his pretrial privileges,
00:33 like his five suits, video and computer special treatment
00:36 and vegan meals, are unprecedented
00:38 in the history of Idaho."
00:39 When Koberger was booked into the jail,
00:41 Lata County Sheriff Richard Skiles
00:43 said it had received Koberger's request for vegan meals
00:46 and would accommodate,
00:47 "But we are not going to buy new pots and pans."
00:49 A family member had previously told the New York Post
00:52 that Koberger went above and beyond being vegan,
00:54 saying relatives had to buy new pots and pans
00:57 because he would not eat from anything
00:58 that had ever had meat cooked in them.
01:00 Koberger entered court initially wearing an orange jumpsuit,
01:03 but in his most recent court appearance on September 13,
01:06 he wore a suit and tie,
01:08 which led Mr. Gonkows to question who paid for it.
01:10 "His request for information has been denied
01:12 due to a gag order in place.
01:14 They won't tell us," he said.
01:15 "But I witnessed the moment they agreed
01:17 not to handcuff him in court."
01:18 Prosecutors have surveillance camera evidence,
01:21 cell phone records, and DNA of Koberger
01:23 connecting him to the murders,
01:24 according to an affidavit that CBS obtained access to.
01:27 On November 13, 2022,
01:30 Santa Kernodle and Ethan Chapin, both 20,
01:32 Maddie Mogan and Kaylee Gonkows, both 21,
01:36 were found dead by police after being stabbed to death
01:38 with a military-style knife
01:40 in a case which has shocked the community.
01:42 The murder weapon has not been found,
01:43 and 28-year-old Koberger was arrested
01:46 after a weeks-long manhunt.
01:47 At the time, he was studying for a PhD in criminology
01:51 at Washington State University.
01:52 A grand jury indicted him on one burglary charge
01:56 and four counts of first-degree murder.
01:57 However, at a court appearance on May 22, 2023
02:01 at Lava County District Court,
02:03 County District Judge John Judge entered
02:05 a not-guilty plea on his behalf,
02:07 as he refused a plea deal.
02:08 Koberger has also delayed trial proceedings indefinitely
02:11 after waiving his right to a speed trial,
02:14 meaning the original October 2, 2023 date no longer stands.
02:18 Prosecutors and the defense recently attended
02:20 a court hearing after both parties requested
02:22 to restrict cameras in the courtroom.
02:24 Koberger's attorney, Ann Taylor, told the judge
02:26 the media were focusing on his crotch.
02:29 Meanwhile, the prosecution said that cameras
02:31 will have a substantial chilling effect
02:33 on the ability of witnesses to openly, fully,
02:35 and candidly testify about some horrible occurrences.
02:38 The family of accused University of Idaho killer
02:41 Brian Koberger has not visited him in jail
02:43 since his arrest last year for the quadruple slaying,
02:46 according to reports.
02:47 News Nation reported that Koberger's parents,
02:49 who live in Pennsylvania, have called him,
02:51 but they have not made any in-person visits.
02:54 Sources told the news outlet that Koberger
02:56 is a model inmate who normally just stays in his cell.
02:59 Last month, Koberger's trial was delayed indefinitely
03:02 as he waived his right to a speed trial.
03:04 The defense has claimed Koberger was not at the crime scene
03:06 and was driving around alone the night Madison Mogan,
03:09 Santa Cronodel, Ethan Chapin, and Kaylee Gonkos
03:12 were fatally stabbed at the women's off-campus home
03:15 on November 13, 2022.
03:17 However, police claimed he visited the area
03:19 12 times before the slayings and that he turned off
03:21 his phone on the night in question.
03:23 Additionally, Koberger's attorneys want prosecutors
03:25 to provide documents involving genetic
03:27 and genealogical testing, which includes information
03:30 about samples from unknown men mentioned in their reports.
03:33 The defense also wants all communication between lab staff
03:36 and anyone else responsible for biological testing,
03:39 in addition to data related to unexpected DNA results.
03:42 Investigators tested DNA from a trash can
03:44 outside Koberger's family home in Pennsylvania
03:47 against DNA found on the sheet at the crime scene.
03:49 Testing determined that at least 99, 99, 98%
03:53 of the male population would be expected to be excluded
03:56 from the possibility of being
03:58 the suspect's biological father.
04:00 Prosecutors filed court documents detailing their intent
04:03 to pursue the death penalty as they deemed the slayings
04:05 were especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel.
