00:00 New claims allege Yellowstone drama between Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan was made
00:04 worse by phone call and big demand from the actor.
00:07 It appears the drama surrounding Yellowstone has gotten worse.
00:10 It's no secret that Kevin Costner has been in a disagreement for a long time now with
00:14 Taylor Sheridan and those running the Paramount Network Western.
00:17 However, according to a new claim reportedly, the actor and the creator of the hit drama
00:22 had a phone call earlier this summer about John Dutton's future.
00:25 Costner apparently made a big demand that Sheridan couldn't get on board with during
00:28 the conversation, making this whole situation workier.
00:31 With the second half of Yellowstone's fifth season up in the air, Costner and Sheridan
00:35 reportedly got on a call to negotiate the actor's involvement in the show, according
00:40 to a report from Matthew Belloni in Puck News via Esquire.
00:43 That call apparently did not go to plan, and it allegedly made things worse.
00:47 While there has been tension between the two about Costner's shooting schedule, especially
00:51 in relation to his own Western movie Horizon, reportedly they wanted to try to find common
00:55 ground and reach an agreement so they could finish season 5B.
00:59 Yellowstone has all the makings of a hit TV show, intriguing storylines, beautiful scenery,
01:04 and an amazing cast, led by none other than Oscar-winning actor/filmmaker Kevin Costner.
01:10 He plays John Dutton-Taylor, a sixth-generation rancher and owner of Yellowstone Dutton Ranch,
01:15 and as the series progresses, Dutton runs for and wins the office of Governor of Montana.
01:20 Costner perfectly fits the profile of the strong and commanding ranch owner, and the
01:24 role even earned him a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild nomination.
01:28 The Paramount Network series is consistently leading in ratings, and with a stunning number
01:32 of spin-offs and prequels on the way, it seemed like all was well in the Yellowstone world.
01:37 But earlier this year, out of nowhere, rumors began swirling that Costner was leaving the
01:42 series.
01:43 For months, conflicting reports stated that he was unhappy with the direction the show
01:46 was going, while others said it was a financial dispute that was leading to his departure.
01:51 It was even reported that he actually wasn't leaving, but just taking a more limited role
01:55 on the series.
01:56 In September 2023, Costner finally broke his silence on the issue and confirmed that he
02:00 would in fact be leaving Yellowstone, but the reason was a lot simpler than you would
02:04 expect.
02:05 Here, the real story on why the actor is exiting Yellowstone.
02:08 Why is Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone?
02:11 Kevin Costner is leaving Yellowstone because of scheduling conflicts with a new movie series
02:15 he's directing and starring in called Horizon, an American saga.
02:19 Season 5 of Yellowstone was broken up into two parts, but before filming for the second
02:23 part began, Costner expressed that he wanted to film for less days than what he was originally
02:27 scheduled for.
02:28 At the time, Deadline reported that Costner wanted to film for 50 days instead of 65 for
02:33 part 1.
02:34 No word on what his final filming schedule was, and for part 2, he only wanted to film
02:39 for a week, which Yellowstone execs felt was too short.
02:42 The two sides went back and forth with negotiations, but they eventually totally fell apart.
02:47 Then, it was announced that season 5, part 2 of Yellowstone would be its last, and a
02:51 new, Matthew McConaughey-led series would seemingly take its place.
02:55 When he broke his silence on his departure in September, Costner stated that he had wanted
02:59 to make things work and that he had already changed his schedule to film part 1, and scripts
03:03 for part 2 weren't finished.
03:05 "I couldn't help them anymore.
03:07 We tried to negotiate.
03:08 They offered me less money than previous seasons.
03:10 There were issues with the creative.
03:12 We came up with a number, and they Yellowstone walked away," People reported.
03:16 It also appears as if things could get contentious again, as Costner has said that he may go
03:21 to court to get his full payday for season 5.
03:23 But while Costner is leaving the show, it actually doesn't mean that he won't make
03:26 any more appearances on the series.
03:28 Reportedly, there's still conversations being had about Costner appearing in a few
03:32 episodes to wrap up his character's storyline before written off, and the show's creator,
03:36 Taylor Sheridan, also hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that John Dutton was never going
03:40 to be around for the very end of the show, and his preferred ending is still unchanged.
03:45 Even with Costner's departure, "My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this
03:49 passion project he wanted to direct.
03:51 He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone.
03:54 I said, 'We can certainly work a schedule toward his preferred exit date,' which we
03:59 did," Sheridan explained.
04:01 "I'm disappointed.
04:02 It truncates the closure of his character.
04:04 It doesn't alter it, but it truncates it.
04:06 Either way, it could be quite a while until we see what ends up happening with Costner
04:10 in Yellowstone."
04:11 While the WGA strike has finished as writers have reached a favorable deal for their guild,
04:16 very good news.
04:17 The SAGE/AFTRE strike is still ongoing, so we likely won't see the last episodes of
04:22 Yellowstone until 2024.
