00:00 King Charles, Queen Camilla make passionate request
00:02 to nation in speech.
00:04 Royal couple's request in speech comes after the bombing
00:06 and attacks between Hamas and Israel.
00:09 King Charles and Queen Camilla recently addressed
00:11 the nation in a speech and made a request.
00:13 The King emphasized with his wife, Queen Camilla,
00:15 beside him for tolerance and understanding.
00:17 Even in the most fractious of times,
00:19 in a speech valuing British values,
00:21 he persisted that the temptation to turn ourselves
00:24 into a shouting or recriminatory society must be resisted
00:27 as advised the nation on both sides of the debate
00:30 to be passionate, but not pugnacious.
00:32 The speech comes after the increased Middle East issues
00:35 following the attack on Israel by Hamas militants,
00:38 which sparked several retaliation strikes.
00:40 In his first visit to the city of London
00:42 since his coronation,
00:43 the monarch will address a mansion house dinner,
00:46 emphasizing the need for respect and understanding
00:48 in the light of the recent spike in anti-Semitic incidents
00:51 brought on by the ongoing tensions
00:53 between Israel and Palestine.
00:55 At approximately 8 o'clock p.m. Wednesday,
00:57 Charles and Camilla arrived at mansion house
00:59 for the customary supper,
01:01 an event honoring the efforts of the city of London's
01:03 civic organizations and livery companies,
01:05 the district's historical and modern trade guilds.
01:08 King Charles says mutual understanding
01:10 between religions vital in times of turmoil.
01:12 The King has said there is a vital need
01:14 for mutual understanding among religions
01:16 in times of international turmoil
01:18 and heartbreaking loss of life
01:20 as the violent conflict in Israel continues.
01:23 Charles' comments on religious tolerance
01:25 came in a state of the nation address
01:26 where he praised everything
01:27 from the positive contribution of immigrants
01:29 to national values like the British sense of humor.
01:32 His landmark speech to the city of London
01:34 examined the country he has served as head of state
01:36 for more than a year,
01:37 highlighting what it is that makes this nation of ours
01:40 so special.
01:41 The King praised the public service
01:42 that underpins institutions supporting the nation
01:45 in areas like health, security,
01:47 and national defense to learning and industry,
01:49 taking many far beyond the call of duty.
01:51 One of my first acts as sovereign
01:53 a little over a year ago
01:55 was to open the doors of Buckingham Palace
01:57 to the leaders of the major faiths
01:58 represented across these islands
02:00 to welcome them with respect and indeed love
02:03 and to rededicate my life
02:04 to protecting the space for faith itself within our shores.
02:07 The King and he spoke about deep wells
02:10 filled with attributes and values
02:11 from civility and tolerance to politeness and respect,
02:14 laughter and care for others,
02:16 which society could draw on.
02:17 But he raised questions
02:18 from whether evidence of climate change
02:20 was enough to convince society
02:22 to make the sacrifices needed to save for the earth
02:24 to the digital sphere
02:25 where debate too often descends into rancor and acrimony.
02:29 The King described the nation as living in a water's age
02:32 and asked whether developments like artificial intelligence
02:35 would bring material plenty and leisure
02:37 or consume jobs and other opportunities
02:39 before capturing and then surpassing
02:41 our very minds themselves.
02:42 In a lighter moment,
02:43 the King poked fun at himself,
02:45 commenting on when he had trouble
02:46 with frustratingly failing fountain pens
02:49 in the days following his accession.
02:50 Speaking at Mansion House,
02:52 where he attended a dinner with the Queen
02:53 to recognize the work of City of London
02:55 civic institutions and livery companies,
02:58 the King commented on the politeness and respect
03:00 we should show each other.
03:01 He added, "This includes the practice
03:03 "of our religious faiths
03:05 "and freedom and mutual understanding.
03:07 "One of my first acts as sovereign
03:09 "a little over a year ago
03:10 "was to open the doors of Buckingham Palace
03:12 "to the leaders of the major faiths
03:14 "represented across these islands
03:15 "to welcome them with respect and indeed love,
03:18 "and to rededicate my life to protecting the space
03:20 "for faith itself within our shores.
03:22 "Such understanding, both at home and overseas,
03:25 "is never more vital than at times
03:27 "of international turmoil
03:28 "and heartbreaking loss of life."
03:29 His comments came as the war of words continued over
03:32 who was responsible for the explosion
03:34 at the Al-Ali Hospital in Gaza on Tuesday night.
03:37 Hamas has blamed the strike on Israel,
03:39 with Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry
03:41 saying at least 500 people were killed.
03:43 But the Israeli military blamed a misfiring rocket
03:46 from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group
03:48 and released imagery and communications intercepts
03:51 aimed at supporting their case.
03:52 In his speech, Lord Mayor of London Nicholas Lyons
03:55 also spoke about the violence in Israel,
03:57 telling guests at the White Tea event,
03:59 "Before I begin, I want to reflect briefly
04:02 "on the suffering of innocent civilians,
04:04 "particularly children,
04:05 "caught up in the horrific events
04:06 "unfolding in the Middle East.
04:08 "My thoughts, and I'm sure those of all of us here,
04:10 "with them."
04:11 Charles' wide-ranging address
04:13 covered the topic of climate change,
04:14 which, when the Prince of Wales,
04:16 he raised through many years of campaigning on the issue.
04:18 The King said, "After decades of debate,
04:21 "our television screens,
04:22 "or increasingly, mobile phone screens,
04:24 "confront us each day
04:25 "with the stark realities of climate change,
04:28 "but our devastating scenes of communities
04:29 "scurried by fire and flood,
04:31 "not to mention the migration of people
04:33 "fleeing those terrifying phenomena,
04:35 "enough to persuade us to take the action that is needed,
04:37 "to make the sacrifices needed to secure our planet
04:40 "for generations yet unborn."
