00:00 Constance, it's good to talk to you again.
00:02 - Hi.
00:03 - We spoke, I guess maybe last year for "Good Trouble",
00:06 so it's good to circle back.
00:09 - I love it.
00:09 (Constance laughs)
00:11 - First off, you know, how familiar were you
00:13 with Harlan Coben's novels and just "Shelter" in general
00:17 before getting involved with the show?
00:20 - I wasn't familiar with them at all.
00:22 I read the script first,
00:26 and then after reading the script and being so impressed
00:30 by the script, then I went and I read the first book,
00:34 I read "Shelter", and then I did not read the second
00:37 and the third book because I actually didn't wanna know
00:41 what happened because I was so into the mystery part of it
00:46 and I didn't know what we were going to,
00:51 how much we were gonna do of the book
00:53 or if we were gonna take from other books.
00:55 So I kind of wanted to stay a little bit more in the secret
00:59 and because my character is not in the books,
01:03 it wasn't like, I just wanted to know what the world was
01:07 and to understand what I was entering into.
01:11 And then I wanted to keep the rest of it secret.
01:14 I wanted it to be revealed to me
01:16 as it was gonna be revealed to you as audience members.
01:20 - You know, as a character that's not in the book,
01:23 you know how, like that must be pretty exciting for you
01:25 to sort of be able to sort of create this new character
01:28 in this established world
01:30 and sort of create something new.
01:33 - I mean, it's kind of every actor's dream
01:35 because it means that you get to work with the showrunner
01:40 and working with Harlan Coben and he and I kind of creating
01:44 and evolving the character together is every actor's dream
01:49 because you're kind of like, oh, well,
01:52 what do we need to accomplish with this character
01:54 and how do we do it telling it through my story
01:57 instead of what has already been written?
01:59 So I think it was fun for Harlan too,
02:02 to kind of be able to create an all new character,
02:05 but within a world that is such a known world for his fans.
02:09 So staying, you know, staying true to that.
02:11 - Yeah, without giving too much away,
02:13 what can you sort of say about Shira and her journey
02:16 over the course of the season?
02:17 - Well, I think you said it best.
02:20 She's definitely on a journey.
02:22 - Okay.
02:23 - What I can say about her is that I think she believed
02:28 that her journey was only going to have to do with Mickey.
02:35 And when we realized that the journey has to do
02:41 with her own self facing, her fears facing, her secrets,
02:46 it becomes a coming of age story for a woman in her 50s,
02:52 just as much as it becomes a coming of age story
02:54 for all the kids on the show.
02:56 - Absolutely.
02:57 - So that's...
02:59 - I love that.
03:00 That's really exciting and refreshing
03:02 because it's something that we all, I feel like,
03:04 you know, no matter sort of what stage of life are you
03:07 and you can sort of come of age in a sense,
03:09 or, you know, realize new things about yourself,
03:11 go on a different path.
03:12 I feel like that's very relevant.
03:15 - Yeah, and realize that you aren't stuck
03:19 with your choices that you've made
03:22 unless you wanna choose to be stuck.
03:25 But instead, I mean, and also it doesn't hurt
03:30 that, you know, she just doesn't have a choice.
03:31 She's facing them head on.
03:33 And so now having to have the balance
03:38 of figuring herself out,
03:40 plus trying to help Mickey figure himself out
03:43 is kind of a really wonderful conflict of ways
03:47 of how they are gonna learn from each other.
03:50 - Totally.
03:51 Speaking of Mickey, what is the dynamic,
03:53 the relationship like between Shira and Mickey?
03:56 - It's a little conflicted and a little complicated
04:01 because I think some words have been said,
04:03 and I think that Mickey has only heard one side
04:07 of the story.
04:08 If he's heard anything coming from a family
04:12 that didn't communicate or share very much,
04:16 I think Mickey is now the result of someone
04:18 who doesn't have all the facts
04:20 and thinks that he knows things
04:24 and they're not true and they're not real.
04:26 So kind of uncovering all of these secrets
04:30 that are of his dad's childhood,
04:33 which then is in reference to Shira and the parents
04:35 and all that kind of stuff.
04:36 It's like, they're gonna need some time to work through it
04:41 besides their own grief and their own stuff
04:45 they're dealing with.
04:46 - They got a lot on their plate
04:49 and there's probably lots of illumination coming
04:51 in sort of discovering the truth of what's happened
04:55 and what's happened in the past.
04:56 So quite a journey for both of them.
05:00 - Right, and I think two people dealing with grief
05:04 in a different way.
05:05 - Everybody deals with it differently.
05:07 - Yeah. - Exactly.
05:08 - Well, I am so excited to see it all unfold.
05:12 Thank you so much again for taking time
05:14 to speak with me. - Well, thank you.
05:15 I'm so glad you liked it.
05:17 - Of course, you have a great rest of your day
05:19 and we'll talk soon.
05:20 - Okay, great.
05:21 Thanks. - Thank you.
05:22 - Bye. - Bye.
