00:00 So, you know, didn't play a ton of minutes last season, started zero games.
00:05 I think he averaged 25 or 26 minutes a game and obviously one sixth man of the year.
00:11 But I think the health, his health and his physical condition is a question mark.
00:18 In addition to just like where he's at as someone who's willing to sacrifice, because
00:24 I'm sure he wants to play more.
00:27 I'm sure he wants a bigger role.
00:30 No one really wants to come off the bench and to.
00:36 Kind of have those preconditions and have that mindset, mindset for a team that
00:42 by all accounts tried to trade you is difficult, and it would be really interesting
00:48 to see how he can swallow his pride or if he's willing to do so.
00:50 Winning Plays is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS Media Network.
00:56 Winning Plays back yet again as we inch closer to Celtics training camp just over one week away.
01:04 And there's no better person to take the temperature on this team right now than
01:09 Michael Pina of The Ringer, formerly of the Big Three and Winning Plays podcast.
01:14 But we'd love to get him back on here for bi-yearly appearances whenever we can grab.
01:19 Mike, it's great to see your face.
01:21 Also rocking the Spurs hat today.
01:22 Are you thinking about Wemby already?
01:25 What's what's how we feel in there?
01:26 Um, you know, Wemby, Kelden Johnson, Devin Vassell, Big G Pop.
01:34 You know, just I'm in a Spurs mood for sure.
01:38 A lot of momentum going down in San Antonio.
01:40 How are you doing, man? Great to see you.
01:42 Good. I'm ready.
01:44 Ready for some hoops.
01:45 Had a nice little breather here as we all did.
01:48 Got some nice people World Cup in.
01:50 Got to see the D.A.O.
01:51 Tice show, and now we're ready for the the main event here.
01:55 But I got to say, I was thinking about you when Daniel Tice was just ripping through
01:59 the world, the globe, destroying the USA's front line.
02:05 You know, so that's destroying everyone's front line.
02:08 Yeah. Just, you know, it's classic Tice.
02:11 Always, always undervalued.
02:13 But we want to get you back on here, Mike.
02:15 We talked we had a Richard on a couple of weeks ago, but three of us talked,
02:21 you know, back in June after the smart deal.
02:22 But we haven't spoken to you since this full offseason has gone on here
02:26 since Grant obviously has departed.
02:28 Some minor moves made by the Seas here, but
02:31 obviously the Porzingis foot situation going into camp,
02:34 a lot of other storylines hitting into Celtics training camp here.
02:37 What's your temperature right now on this team as we begin, obviously, a pivotal year?
02:42 Yeah, I think that
02:45 through a combination of their roster and
02:50 their pedigree and their talent and just kind of how muddy
02:54 the rest of the Eastern Conference is, where you have a lot of big players
02:58 on the other contending teams, you know, Giannis feels a little disgruntled.
03:04 There's a lot of pressure in Milwaukee.
03:07 The Sixers are kind of a mess.
03:09 No one really knows what the Miami Heat are going to look like.
03:11 All wrapped up together, I just think that the Celtics are the clear
03:16 favorite to come out of the East or at least be the best team
03:20 in the Eastern Conference this season.
03:22 And I don't say that with a ton of confidence, but
03:24 I think that their ceiling is the highest.
03:30 I think they have a pretty high floor, too.
03:32 And I like the roster.
03:36 I like the overall.
03:38 I like the changes that were made.
03:39 I think Malcolm Brogdon is a really interesting variable.
03:45 Porzingis' foot, really interesting variable.
03:48 So health is going to be a question mark.
03:51 Interesting is one way to put it.
03:53 Yeah.
03:54 And then you have I mean, I don't really know.
03:58 I have a feeling about what the starting five will be
04:02 and what the closing lineups will look like, but
04:05 there aren't that many huge questions here either, which is really good
04:11 when you're a really you're a team that's aspiring to win the NBA championship.
04:14 So I think that they can have a top five offense, top five defense,
04:18 and they're one of the best teams in the NBA again.
04:21 All right, well, let's talk about two things here, then.
04:25 Well, first, you brought it up, so I think it's given the scuttlebutt
04:28 this week, Malcolm Brogdon, which honestly, this is kind of.
04:32 You know, it took a break for a couple months, but this obviously.
04:36 He was not happy, I think, in the aftermath, the initial deal
04:39 not going through the Clippers, and now it's just been just been again.
04:44 I don't think anything is necessarily, you know, changed.
04:46 He obviously hasn't spoken publicly in the last month,
04:49 but there's a situation where him both like.
04:52 His happiness factor and the injury situation of his elbow,
04:55 which I think was talked about a little bit on NBA Today yesterday, like
04:59 how I've heard a variety of things in this front.
05:02 How do you kind of see the situation playing out with him of being like
05:05 bring it back?
05:07 Let's see what it looks like with this group in a similar role.
05:09 Do you expect?
05:11 You know him to be around for a full season here?
05:14 Like what's what's your kind of read?
05:16 Or is this kind of a wait and see situation in your eyes?
05:19 I mean, it should be up to him, right?
05:22 Like, um, assuming he's healthy,
05:26 you know, assuming the what was it like an elbow forearm?
05:32 I can't remember injury that he suffered.
05:34 And then also he's got lower body, lower body
05:38 question marks that have kind of
05:41 prevailed throughout his entire career from when he was drafted.
05:44 So, you know, didn't play a ton of minutes last season.
05:49 Started zero games.
05:50 I think he averaged 25 or 26 minutes a game
05:53 and obviously one sixth man of the year. But
05:56 I think the health, his health and his physical condition
06:02 is a is a question mark in addition to just like where he's at.
06:07 As someone who's willing to sacrifice, because
06:10 I'm sure he wants to play more.
06:13 I'm sure he wants a bigger role.
06:16 No one really wants to come off the bench and to.
06:21 Kind of have those preconditions
06:24 and have that mindset mindset for a team that
06:27 by all accounts tried to trade you is difficult.
06:31 And it would be really interesting to see how he can swallow his pride
06:35 or if he's willing to do so and kind of repeat
06:39 the role that he had last year.
06:43 I would think that it would be a little expanded now with Marcus gone
06:47 and maybe it'll at least kind of shift a little bit
06:51 in terms of how much the ball is in his hands when he's on the court.
06:54 But he's really important.
06:58 I think he's overlooked in terms of how important he is.
07:03 And yeah, like I you can still play a ton of really awesome lineups with him in it.
07:11 And if he I guess like if the three point shooting is still
07:15 what it was last year, then you're in great shape.
07:18 But, you know, if it falters a little bit, that'll be interesting.
07:21 But generally speaking, like.
07:25 You have to feel a little.
07:28 I guess I don't really know how I feel about him.
07:32 I was going to say optimistic, but I don't know.
07:34 A lot of question marks with him right now.
07:37 And they they kind of need him.
07:39 So I don't really know what you would trade him for right now.
07:41 Like I was just thinking before we started recording about.
07:45 Like, you know, Buddy Healds on the trade block now, and it's like,
07:50 oh, that'd be I couldn't like imagine that type of trade happening, but like
07:55 thinking because of just like the teams involved and
08:00 sending Malcolm Brogdon back to Indiana doesn't really make a lot of sense.
08:02 Yeah. But.
08:06 He is an interesting trade ship, but like, why would you want to move off
08:10 of someone at that age, at that point in their career
08:13 who has a clear role on your team and you're trying to win the title?
08:17 I just it's difficult for me to kind of think of a possible
08:21 trade partner there, unless you have someone in mind.
08:28 Yeah, I mean, I don't think to your point on that, like you don't.
08:32 In my mind, if they ever move, exactly.
08:35 You need to get a big upgrade from a clear upgrade.
08:37 And you're going to have to package like picks to do that with his contract.
08:41 And those type of guys, I pray, are that you're interested in
08:44 aren't available right now.
08:46 And so that might be a situation where it's a down the line period.
08:50 But I do actually think that they want to, you know,
08:55 you want to see what it looks like with this revamped group.
08:58 I do have questions.
09:00 I want to get your take on like, is he a lock for a closing five on this team?
09:03 Like I never thought like for as good as he was last year in the regular season
09:07 and for as steady as he was captain that second year,
09:10 I thought the fit with him with in the closing five, whether it was,
09:16 you know, obviously next to smart was time, but it was tough last year.
09:18 So I wonder what that looks like again next to Derek here
09:21 or whether that's something where they go too big to close a lot of these games.
09:25 And I'm curious to see how that kind of plays itself out.
09:28 All right, let's take a break to hear from our sponsor, FanDuel.
09:32 Snap into the action this NFL season with FanDuel, America's number one sportsbook.
09:36 Right now, new customers get $200 in bonus bets
09:39 guaranteed when you place a $5 bet.
09:42 That's $200 in bonus bets win or lose.
09:45 If you've been thinking about joining FanDuel,
09:47 there's no better time to get in on the action.
09:49 The app is easy to use.
09:50 There's a wide range of betting options, including spreads, player props,
09:54 over-unders and much more.
09:55 So visit FanDuel.com/Boston and kick off the NFL season.
10:00 FanDuel, the official partner of the NFL.
10:03 You would think that you have four.
10:12 Guys who are going to be closing a majority of the games when they're healthy.
10:16 So KP Tatum, Jalen and Derek White, right?
10:19 Those are the four.
10:21 I mean, honestly, yeah, it could be by committee for sure.
10:26 You know, I'm really high on the season that Peyton Pritchard can have.
10:30 I'm pretty high on the season that Sam Houser can have.
10:34 I don't know if he's going to be closing it out to attending games,
10:36 but he's an option.
10:38 You know, you have Al Horford.
10:42 Al Horford's pretty good.
10:43 You have Rob Williams.
10:45 You have like a lot of.
10:47 I know that it'll be really interesting to see how Joe Mazzuola
10:50 kind of evaluates his first year as a head coach and what worked, what didn't work.
10:55 Is he going to play bigger lineups now that he has a little bit more skill
11:00 on the court and a little bit more spacing and
11:03 KP is kind of a different type of big, really unique and singular.
11:09 So I think that.
11:11 KP kind of gives you more options on what type of bigs
11:16 you can play and what type of lineups you can play.
11:18 So I wouldn't be shocked at all if they close big more often than not
11:22 because they have a lot of skill on the court.
11:25 And I don't know how many minutes or how many games Al Horford's
11:28 going to play in the regular season, though.
11:30 And I don't know how healthy Rob's going to be throughout the regular season.
11:33 Like, I feel like Rob Williams ceiling is defensive player of the year
11:37 and his floor is.
11:39 Irrelevance, right?
11:41 So.
11:42 A lot of there's a questions from that perspective,
11:46 but then again, like Malcolm Brogdon totally could close
11:49 a ton of games and be awesome, and they could go small with Tatum at the four
11:54 and still be really formidable.
11:57 I think it also just it'll depend on kind of the rhythms of the game
12:01 and who they're playing, I feel like.
12:03 Yeah, it's really, though, of a lot of flexibility
12:06 in that front based on the opponent, so that is like going to camp.
12:10 I feel, you know, if Porzingis is like the top star in terms of his fit
12:15 with this, you know, with this with Tatum and Brown
12:17 and how that looks, I'll look in the court.
12:19 I think Brogdon is just a close second just for everything
12:22 you kind of laid out there of both health stuff, mindset stuff.
12:26 And then again, yeah, thing thing, how those groups kind of fit together here.
12:30 But looking I mean, looking around the ECU and you brought it up earlier, Mike,
12:34 like there are question marks everywhere.
12:37 Like, what's your.
12:39 Breed on how this like leather stuff shakes out,
12:43 do you think this is going to drag on to the year?
12:45 Do you think this gets done with Miami early on or when we're hearing whispers
12:49 of wild cards like Toronto or Chicago, like maybe putting in bids?
12:54 But like are any of those actually like realistic in your eyes?
12:58 Or is that just, you know, posturing that by Portland, maybe trying to
13:03 up the price for Miami?
13:05 I haven't thought too hard about Chicago.
13:08 I don't really know exactly what their draft.
13:11 I don't think it's great.
13:12 I think we trade a bunch of stuff for Boosh, right?
13:13 So it's like, right.
13:14 But I'm pretty sure that and I hope I'm not wrong
13:18 going off the top of my head that one of their protected picks that's extended,
13:22 you know, it rolls over through like the next few years.
13:25 It belongs to Portland.
13:28 So I feel like if you were to have a trade there
13:32 that they would open up the ability, their ability to trade future picks down the line.
13:38 So if that were possible, then Chicago suddenly becomes
13:41 like a little interesting to me just because they are going nowhere.
13:48 The Alonzo ball thing screwed them.
13:52 And, you know, they just signed Vooch to a long term deal like 60 mil.
13:57 They don't seem to I mean, we'll see what happens with DeRozan.
14:02 They have not extended him, but they have Levine under contract for a little.
14:06 His max for a couple of few more seasons.
14:09 So Chicago's interesting.
14:13 You know, I wrote at the beginning of the summer about
14:17 trading Scottie Barnes for Damian Lillard.
14:20 That's just like not going to happen.
14:21 I don't feel like maybe it will.
14:24 That would be really fun, I think.
14:26 So I'm always kind of, you know, thinking about Toronto
14:29 because they're another team that, you know, had a terrible offseason,
14:32 lost their starting point guard.
14:35 Dennis Schroeder destroyed Team USA in FIBA,
14:38 but I don't think he's like a starting caliber point guard
14:41 for a team that wants to do anything.
14:44 So they're kind of in this weird crossroads stage with Siakam on an expiring.
14:50 And OG Inanobi also, you know, he has a player option
14:54 in the following season. He can be expiring.
14:56 So Toronto should be looked at as a player here.
15:01 And then, of course, the Miami Heat, like
15:04 I don't know what
15:06 their best offer has been.
15:08 Obviously, it's not the best offer that they can offer.
15:11 But even if they get to that place where they're willing to give up
15:15 Kiro Jovic, the kid they just drafted,
15:20 and then like they can get however many.
15:23 I think they can max out at three firsts if they do some stuff
15:27 and remove some protections.
15:30 So like, I don't think they've offered that.
15:33 Even if they do, like,
15:36 can you get something better than that for Lillard?
15:39 Who knows?
15:41 Miami better do this deal, honestly.
15:45 If they don't, I think that they will.
15:48 I thought that they were going to fall off last year.
15:50 And it looked that way.
15:52 It looked to be that way for much of the season until obviously
15:55 in the playoffs, they got red hot.
15:58 And Jimmy was amazing.
16:00 But like, you know, losing Gabe Vincent, losing Max Drews,
16:04 those were two starters, huge, huge roles, huge contributions
16:09 throughout the postseason, including in the
16:13 in the conference finals against the Celtics.
16:15 So, yeah, Dame is a really huge wild card for this entire season.
16:21 And I think that, you know, teams like the Celtics and the Sixers
16:28 will breathe a huge sigh of relief if he goes to Chicago or.
16:34 We're talking about Miami.
16:36 Yeah, I mean, what do you think?
16:39 Like where, where, where, where, where?
16:42 If you're if you're the owner of the Celtics, like what team
16:45 would you not want them to go to?
16:47 What would fear you?
16:48 What would scare you the most?
16:49 Miami. Like, you know what?
16:51 That's that's a clear cut.
16:51 I mean, even like I guess Philly would be kind of scary.
16:54 But obviously that doesn't look like it's like they're not going to.
16:57 They're not going to trade Maxi, which it doesn't sound like they're doing.
16:59 Like that's not happening.
17:01 And yeah, I think that's like easily Chicago's fine.
17:06 Like, yeah, Chicago's a more fun team of lawyers there, but they're not
17:08 they're not going to entertain with Toronto like it's more fun team,
17:10 but also not doing anything.
17:12 So, yeah, I think that's that's a clear cut where you have if you're.
17:16 If you're with Grosbeck, but and then I know you have to go here,
17:21 but I'll wrap up on this like.
17:23 With the hard situation in Philly, like what?
17:26 How do you expect that chess game to be played?
17:29 And you're obviously very familiar with both your parties as a
17:32 a red 94 writer of way back in the day.
17:36 But what's oh yeah, what's your read on this?
17:39 And I feel like.
17:42 I'll just say this is going to blink.
17:44 We'll go out on this.
17:46 I'm writing a column right now about the New York Knicks
17:50 and the New York Knicks should feel pretty optimistic about their chance
17:56 of getting an MVP caliber player within the next 12 months.
18:01 That's what I'll that's what I'll go from Philadelphia.
18:03 You said it.
18:07 All right.
18:10 That's a good tease.
18:10 We look for that from Mike on the ringer.com
18:14 as long as a ton of other stuff for you.
18:16 You have a training campaign yet or what is that?
18:18 And is that in the TBA?
18:20 Not yet. Not yet.
18:25 We'll see.
18:28 We'll see something could be in the works.
18:30 We'll see.
18:31 All right. Stay tuned for that.
18:34 Make sure you're on like on Twitter at Michael V.
18:37 Pina and all this great stuff on the ringer as well.
18:40 And we'll be back with you guys next week
18:43 as we get ready for training camps coming just days away.
