00:00 setback for the world's biggest toy maker in its quest to cut carbon emissions.
00:06 On Monday, LEGO announced that it has decided not to progress with making its bricks from
00:10 recycled plastic bottles after more than two years of testing found that the material didn't
00:16 reduce carbon emissions.
00:18 The Danish company released this statement reaffirming their green commitment.
00:23 We remain fully committed to making LEGO bricks from sustainable materials by 2032.
00:29 We are currently testing and developing LEGO bricks made from a range of alternative sustainable
00:33 materials including other recycled plastics and plastics made from alternative sources
00:39 such as e-methanol.
00:41 The move will be seen as a blow after a high profile push by LEGO to improve its green
00:45 credentials.
00:47 Like many other companies, the toy maker has been exploring alternative materials to plastic
00:52 as sustainability becomes more important to customers.
00:56 Other challenges has been finding a material that is durable enough to last for generations.
01:02 LEGO has established itself as the most profitable toy maker in the world, increasing earnings
01:06 for six consecutive years, recording a return of $9.2 billion in 2022.
01:12 According to the company, they have so far invested more than $1.2 billion in sustainability
01:18 initiatives as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions by 37% by 2032.
