00:02 - They could never just get that break.
00:06 You know, the kid had the ball in his hands
00:08 to pick a ball off on that last drive
00:10 and third and 19, fourth and six, third and 15,
00:14 like time and time and time.
00:17 I got 10 guys on the field.
00:18 Oh, it crushed me, Mike, on Saturday night.
00:20 I couldn't.
00:21 [laughing]
00:22 - Well, it was a heartbreaker for Irish fans.
00:25 There's no doubt.
00:26 I mean, I grew up with that in my household.
00:29 The first game that I ever watched
00:32 that I can remember watching
00:34 was a Notre Dame versus Purdue game.
00:36 I think it was '67.
00:38 Leroy Keyes and Mike Phipps
00:40 against Terry Hanratty and Jim Seymour.
00:43 So that goes way back for me,
00:45 that affection for Notre Dame
00:48 in my household and in my family.
00:50 And I can see where that kind of game
00:54 that they played so well
00:56 and they had such a great chance
00:58 to really do something extraordinary.
01:00 And it's kind of why I look at this as,
01:04 for me, I still think that if Notre Dame
01:06 were in a conference,
01:07 they'd have that opportunity more often.
01:09 They'd have more than just,
01:12 okay, we need to win this game on Saturday
01:14 because if we lose it,
01:16 then our season's kind of over.
01:18 I mean, where are we going if we don't,
01:20 if we can't be undefeated, where are we going?
01:22 We're going to what, the Citrus Bowl or whatever.
01:25 I think if they could lose a game like that,
01:28 if they were members of the Big Ten
01:29 and still win the league.
01:30 And so there'd still be something elite to play for.
01:34 And I still think that they're better off in a league,
01:37 but there are really strong factions up there
01:40 that think that if they were in a league,
01:41 they might just be another program.
01:44 I don't think Notre Dame ever fits into that category.
01:47 I think Notre Dame is always exceptional.
01:50 And I just think they'd have more to play for
01:52 if they were to go ahead and change their stance
01:55 and at last join a league.
