00:00 Boom!
00:03 What? Not afraid of death?
00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're thinking back on our golden years when we first had to get good.
00:13 The End. Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater.
00:26 Do you hear me, Snake? I am the End.
00:34 Admittedly, this one can be cheesed a number of different ways, but for those who choose to play it as intended,
00:41 the End might just be yours before the fight is over.
00:45 Stupidly fast for an old man, the End will hide himself throughout numerous zones for Snake to track down,
00:52 all the while the old man has Snake in his sights.
00:56 Metal Gear Solid 3 does a fantastic job setting Snake up as the hunter throughout the game,
01:01 but the fight against the End flips the script as Snake is the one on the run
01:06 while the End can easily be hiding right under Snake's boot.
01:10 Tracking the End is no easy task, and for those playing the game for the first time,
01:15 it can also be an exercise in endurance,
01:18 as newcomers could spend a couple hours trying to find the End before he finds them.
01:23 I can return to the form I was in.
01:28 Angra. God Hand.
01:35 Sorry I woke you. Don't worry, I'll tuck you back into bed.
01:43 Even under ideal conditions and when the player is in the zone, God Hand is still a difficult game.
01:50 The game's final boss is a testament to the title's brazen approach to challenge,
01:55 as he arrives immediately after yet another difficult bout, barely giving players a moment to breathe.
02:02 With not only the most HP of any enemy in the game, Angra also possesses some of the strongest attacks,
02:09 and missing even a single dodge can prove catastrophic.
02:13 The game demands near perfection, as not only do you need to stay close enough to counter or land any hits of your own,
02:20 you'll also be on the defensive, dodging more frequently than any other encounter in the game.
02:26 Angra's enormous size also allows his reach to far exceed the normal boss fights
02:32 and keeps the player constantly on the move.
02:35 Lots of patience and lots of luck are needed for this one.
02:39 May the light of good shine on his soul through these God Hands!
02:46 Demon Queen. Maximo goes to glory.
02:54 My plans are nearly complete!
03:01 Finally, his power transfers to me!
03:08 Even on its best days, Maximo is not an easy game,
03:13 fully embracing its roots as a 3D Ghosts 'n Goblins successor,
03:17 and the title has no qualms letting the player know it can kill them at any moment.
03:22 Also remaining true to its roots, what many assumed was the final boss was in fact only the appetizer.
03:29 Defeating King Akili, the Queen reveals herself as the true puppeteer all along,
03:35 revealing her monstrous alien necromore form and attempts to immediately devour Maximo.
03:41 What makes the fight so difficult is more the arena than the boss itself.
03:46 Draped in complete darkness, the Demon Queen stalks Maximo from the shadows,
03:52 and your only chance to see her coming is during the numerous lightning strikes illuminating the room.
03:58 Other than her infrequent growls, the Queen is completely silent,
04:03 oftentimes even appearing behind Maximo to catch him off guard.
04:08 Pigsy - Manhunt
04:30 Like most of the games on our list, Manhunt is designed to be a difficult game.
04:35 With the player character James Earl Cash being very much an everyman,
04:39 it's all too easy for him to be killed for a simple mistake.
04:43 After surviving all the horrors of the director's games, the end is in sight for James.
04:49 He just has to deal with a little piggy before he can claim his freedom.
04:53 Unlike many of the other threats throughout the game,
04:56 Pigsy doesn't really give the player much time to plan their method of attack
05:00 as he relentlessly chases James wielding his chainsaw.
05:04 Thankfully, Pigsy is more bloodthirsty than he is clever,
05:08 so eventually James can send this little piggy crying "Wee, wee, wee" all the way home.
05:14 Hiroku - Shinobi
05:28 We recently ranked Shinobi as one of the hardest PS2 games of all time,
05:33 and likewise, its boss fights are also some of the most challenging as well.
05:38 The game's final boss, Hiroku, puts all the player's Shinobi skills to the test,
05:43 teleporting around the arena and firing extremely damaging projectiles from afar.
05:48 Even just landing a single hit is an exercise in patience,
05:53 as he will often launch his attacks before you can even get near him,
05:57 forcing you to backtrack before taking damage.
06:00 Summoning all manner of magic attacks to crowd the battlefield,
06:03 as well as powerful area of effect attacks,
06:06 only true Shinobis will be able to snuff out this sorcerer's flame
06:10 and capture Hiroku's soul to put an end to his misdeeds.
06:14 Verdugo - Resident Evil 4
06:31 While Verdugo is still a challenge in the 2023 remake,
06:35 in the 2005 original, he was the stuff sweaty palms were made of.
06:40 Virtually indestructible, Salazar's right hand will relentlessly stalk Leon through the corridors,
06:47 slashing at him through the ventilation ducts before making its grand debut.
06:51 Bullets are almost useless against the monstrosity,
06:55 unless Leon is able to freeze it using one of the liquid nitrogen canisters,
06:59 but even this is more of a band-aid solution.
07:03 Leon's inability to move while shooting can make this even more of a challenge
07:07 for those attempting this fight for the first time,
07:10 and missing any of the quick-time dodge prompts will leave you scrambling into your inventory for a healing herb.
07:16 Although it is possible to kill Verdugo,
07:19 most will run through the open elevator and never look back.
07:23 Penance - Final Fantasy X
07:29 Not only is Penance one of the hardest bosses in Final Fantasy X,
07:41 it's also one of the hardest bosses in the entire series.
07:45 To even reach this super boss, you need to defeat numerous other super bosses
07:51 just so you know what you're getting into.
07:54 Boasting an absolutely stonking 12 million HP, as well as its ultimate attack, Judgment Day,
08:01 which can easily wipe out your entire party, and its arms have their own attack turns.
08:07 Each arm also has its own specialties,
08:10 which can completely incapacitate your party with any number of status effects.
08:15 Going into this fight unprepared or without the right team
08:19 can leave you stuck in an endless cycle of retries as you battle through its multiple stages.
08:25 This is a Final Fantasy game, after all,
08:27 and you can easily find yourself blowing through your stock of potions
08:30 before even making a dent in Penance's enormous health bar.
08:34 Virgil - Devil May Cry 3 Dante's Awakening
08:41 Or better yet, have a kiss from this.
08:48 Sibling rivalries, huh?
08:50 As the brothers' clash reaches its climax by the game's end,
08:54 neither one holds back, but Virgil seems especially sour on their confrontation.
09:00 Not only is he faster than Dante, he can teleport around the arena
09:05 and will also span his Devil Trigger like it's going out of style.
09:09 Dante will spend most of the encounter on the run,
09:12 and there's no shame getting a couple cheap hits in whenever possible.
09:16 He is trying to kill you, after all.
09:19 At the halfway point, Virgil will tap into the Sparta Trigger
09:23 and unleash everything he had apparently been holding back all this time.
09:28 Just remember, it's not running away, it's a tactical retreat.
09:33 Timing your own Devil Trigger as well as calling forth the power of Christ
09:37 to compel his surrender using holy water ensures Dante's undisputed victory.
09:43 For now, anyway.
09:44 Am I being defeated?
09:47 What's wrong? Is that all you got?
09:50 Come on, get up! You can do better than that.
09:55 Ares, God of War.
09:57 I am not the same man you found that day.
10:00 The monster you've created has returned to kill you.
10:04 There's a reason Ares held the title of God of War for as long as he did.
10:09 Even with the aid of Pandora's Box, Kratos is still in for a fight
10:14 as Ares reveals his true form and holds nothing back to maintain his title.
10:19 Incredibly strong with both long and short-range attacks,
10:23 Ares is one of the only enemies in the original God of War
10:27 that forces you to make use of the block and parry mechanics
10:30 before he whittles Kratos' health down to nothing,
10:33 ending the Spartans' quest for revenge prematurely.
10:37 Just because he's a God of Olympus, don't think he's above an odd cheap hit either.
10:43 And for the final stretch of the fight, Kratos is left without his trusty blades,
10:47 leaving him no choice but to get up close and personal.
10:51 By the end, both Kratos and the player are relieved the whole ordeal is over.
10:57 I was trying to make you a great warrior.
11:01 You succeed.

11:18 Sephiroth, Kingdom Hearts 2
11:21 By the way, you three, who are you?
11:27 Well, I'm not sure we should tell you.
11:31 Although Sora's encounter with Sephiroth in the original Kingdom Hearts is also the stuff of legend,
11:36 we're focusing on their second bout here due to the one-winged angel
11:40 using the time between games to become even more of a nightmare.
11:44 To even attempt this optional battle,
11:47 you're going to want Sora to be as highly leveled and stocked up as possible,
11:52 and even then, you're only coming out the other side on a wing and a prayer.
11:57 Keeping your distance until you strike is a necessity,
12:01 due specifically to how many arena clearing and area of effect attacks Sephiroth has at his disposal.
12:08 As you clear his health bars, yes, plural,
12:11 he'll unlock new, more devastating attacks,
12:14 and the more damage you do, the stronger he becomes.
12:18 At least you unlock a cool Keyblade just for surviving.
12:21 How'd you like that?
12:23 I admit you're very skilled.
12:26 What was the hardest boss you beat back on the PS2?
12:29 Keep your guard up and let us know down in the comments.
