Bears need to pick one and stick with him

00:00 Look, I'm no football coach and I'm not at practice every day and seeing what each guy
00:05 does with every rep he takes at practice and not analyzing every move he makes during a
00:12 game on film.
00:13 But if it were me, if I were the head coach, I'd pick one guy and I'd pick Sam Jackson
00:19 and I'd just let him go and I'd let him play and lead wherever it goes with the assumption
00:28 that he improves.
00:29 Now, if he's showing no improvement after four or five games, then that's a different
00:34 situation.
00:35 But I would just leave him in there until he gets enough playing time to show improvement.
00:42 If he's not showing improvement, then that's something else.
00:46 But most coaches that have success with very young players like freshman quarterbacks who
00:52 put them in there tend to leave them in there and then by his second or third season, they're
00:58 quality quarterbacks.
00:59 Now, Cal is not going to have a quality quarterback in 2023.
01:04 That's just the way it is.
01:06 And it's going to be more noticeable this season with all the good quarterbacks in the
01:10 Pac-12.
01:11 So it seems to me that they should be educating and giving experience to somebody so they
01:18 might be good next year in the ACC.
01:21 Now coaches can't really look at that.
01:23 I mean, their job is on the line each year.
01:25 So they have to win each game each year to really protect their resume.
01:31 And that's hard to do.
01:33 I can't imagine that Wilcox is going to get fired after this season just because of the
01:38 financial obligation Cal has to Wilcox and the financial situation Cal is facing in the
01:46 next couple of years.
01:47 So he should feel confidence in this situation.
01:51 But of course, you want to be successful every year.
01:55 But I would just let Jackson play and see what happens.
02:00 Now if he gets hurt, that's a different situation.
02:01 And he has been hurt a couple of times and that sort of changes the whole equation because
02:07 you have to be prepared for a backup in his situation since he's come out of two games
02:12 because of injury.
02:13 And that's something you have to consider.
