00:00 Ever find yourself at a loss as to what you want to have for lunch or dinner?
00:04 You are not alone, and it's no surprise concerning the options Malaysians have when it comes to filling their bellies.
00:09 After all, this country is a haven of good food thanks to the diversity of Malaysian people.
00:15 Sadly, for many living in poverty, the big question is not "What do I want to eat?"
00:19 It's "Where will the next meal come from?"
00:22 In 2012, Kuchara Soup Kitchen sought to help those living below the poverty line answer this question, and they haven't looked back since.
00:30 We started off as a soup kitchen registered as a society.
00:34 Then later on, after doing a lot of work for the people on the streets,
00:38 we realized the root cause of it is actually poverty.
00:41 If we are able to help them regularly, then there is a constant supply of food,
00:47 then they don't have to worry, and they can concentrate on looking for other sources of income.
00:52 The NGO also has a food bank in Setapajaya to collect dry food for the poor.
00:57 Kuchara also engages recipients, offering training to help them acquire new skills so that they may earn an income.
01:03 We come up with some programs such as sewing and baking,
01:08 for them to get trained up, to get the necessary skill sets to help them to generate some extra income.
01:19 Along the way, they get trained and get paid for it,
01:22 so that they can bring home some important income, extra income that is.
01:28 And also when they get to spend some time here, it's like a moment out of their problem.
01:34 Besides offering skill development training, the organization also provides a wide range of support,
01:40 including basic health care, educational opportunities for children, housing assistance and welfare aid.
01:45 This holistic approach aims to decrease the number of people in need of help.
01:50 We felt that if we are able to really tap into the root cause,
01:55 then it kind of like help what we are actually established to stand for,
02:00 which is to reduce the number of people on the streets,
02:03 and reduce the suffering of people who are actually suffering from poverty.
02:08 To reach out to more recipients, CHIA is encouraging the public to make donations to maintain a steady food supply.
02:14 We are really helping about over 3,000 families on a regular basis.
02:19 And we're talking about giving them provisions on almost on a monthly basis.
02:24 And the worry is to make sure that we are able to commit that many of them,
02:28 and to make sure that there's constant supply of food provisions.
02:32 In conjunction with World Food Day on October 16th,
02:36 Pechara is running a nationwide food collection campaign for those struggling to meet basic needs.
02:40 Those who wish to contribute can leave their donations at KSK Foodbank situated in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca and Johor Bahru.
