00:00 I'm Esra Araya and this is the Manila Times.
00:03 The Department of Education or DepEd has launched the pilot implementation of the revised Kindergarten
00:09 to Grade 10 or K-10 curriculum in the basic education.
00:14 Also called as the Matatag Curriculum, its goal is to improve the country's international
00:19 score when it comes to science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects.
00:25 The 2024 National Budget deliberations for DepEd's funds has been ongoing and the agency
00:31 is set on the mass implementation of the Matatag Curriculum in the coming school year.
00:38 Here with us today is Department of Education's Assistant Secretary and Deputy Spokesperson,
00:43 Asek Francis Bringas.
00:46 Welcome to the Manila Times, Asek.
00:47 Hello, good morning Esra and good morning to all your viewers and listeners.
00:51 Thank you.
00:52 Sir, please give us an update of the pilot implementation of the revised K-10 Matatag
00:58 Curriculum and what are your initial assessments?
01:02 Well the pilot study or pilot implementation of the K-10 Matatag Curriculum, particularly
01:07 in Kinder grades 1, 4 and 7, officially started in September 25 in 7 regions and 35 schools
01:16 nationwide.
01:17 So we had regions 1, 2, Cordillera Administrative Region, National Capital Region, Region 7,
01:27 Regions 12 and 13 with 5 schools each.
01:34 So after the first week of implementation, we have gathered our initial assessment and
01:39 generally, our impressions coming from the regional offices is that the learners are
01:47 very good, teachers as well as the school and even the local government units that supported
01:52 the pilot implementation.
01:54 And of course, since this is a new curriculum for the set grade levels, we have some challenges
02:01 of course in the adjustment of the class programs or class programming because of the change
02:06 in the time allotment.
02:08 But the adjustments have been made and we are all smoothly going on with our second
02:15 week of implementation and generally, our teachers were confident because we had a wide
02:26 training and orientation for teachers who will be involved in the pilot including school
02:32 personnel and division personnel who will be monitoring and assessing the implementation.
02:37 Sir, tell us what does the new Matatag Curriculum aim to achieve by the end of its pilot implementation
02:43 before the wide implementation of the new curriculum?
02:47 The very purpose of the pilot implementation is really to try it out in the different typologies
02:54 of schools given that our pilot is only 35 and to see if there will be some gaps and
03:00 challenges and issues that need to be addressed prior to its nationwide implementation.
03:05 So we are looking at the result of the research that would tell us what needs to be improved,
03:12 what needs to be adjusted, and what interventions need to be done for a smooth and seamless
03:19 transition by next school year.
03:21 Sir, you also mentioned that the teacher's training for the new curriculum is finished.
03:28 Yeah, for the participating schools.
03:31 But definitely prior to the nationwide implementation by next school year, we will have mass training
03:37 for all teachers in Kinder grades 1, 4, and 7 because they have to be familiar and oriented
03:43 with the new curriculum guides including our lesson exemplars, learning activity sheets,
03:48 and hopefully our new textbooks.
03:50 Sir, when is the mass training of the teachers for the new curriculum, if ever, sir?
03:59 When's the target?
04:00 The mass training will probably happen in the school year break, that is July.
04:06 So in preparation for the August opening.
04:09 But definitely within the school year, we will be conducting a series of orientations
04:13 as well to these teachers, school personnel, and other SDO personnel.
04:18 Thank you so much for that information, Ase Kano.
04:21 So before we end, tell us about DEPED's plan on allocating funds for learners with disabilities
04:27 in the 2024 national budget.
04:29 And how much would it be?
04:32 Yes, so the original name of this Learners with Disabilities Fund is SPED.
04:37 Now it is called SNED, the Special Needs Education.
04:41 It is in our budget and it includes all of their needs like instructional materials,
04:48 learning devices.
04:49 We also have in our budget outside the SNED, we also have a budget for the Integrated Learning
04:57 Resource Centers.
04:58 That is the former SPED centers that we have and by law we have to, in all municipalities
05:04 we will have to establish Integrated Learning Resource Centers where all of our services
05:10 are located for our learners with special needs.
05:15 So all of the plantilia, we need to give that.
05:19 So we are just finishing our IRR for the implementation of that law.
05:23 But even before the law on inclusive education, we already have a policy on inclusivity in
05:32 the department that gave way to the conversion of our SPED schools into Integrated Learning
05:37 Resource Centers.
05:38 Very well said, Asek.
05:39 Lastly, to confirm, DEPED will no longer change the term "Diktadurang Marcos" in the curriculum.
05:45 Is that correct?
05:46 Well, it is still in the curriculum that the name of Marcos is removed from Diktadurang
05:53 Marcos.
05:54 Again, we have repeatedly explained that that is not changing the facts or the history that
05:59 we have, but it's simply a manner of presentation in the framing of the new curriculum that
06:05 is thematic in essence.
06:07 All right.
06:08 Thank you, Asek.
06:09 And just to repeat on what you said, the pilot implementation of the revised K-10 Matatag
06:14 curriculum is going very well, and trainings of teachers will be done before the mass implementation.
06:21 And there's definitely funds for learners with special needs.
06:25 Thank you so much, Department of Education Assistant Secretary and Deputy Spokesperson
06:30 Asek Francis-Bringas.
06:31 Maraming salamat po.
06:32 Thank you, Ezra.
06:33 [END]
06:33 Thank you, Ezra.
06:34 Thank you, Department of Education Assistant Secretary and Deputy Spokesperson Asek Francis-Bringas.
06:35 Maraming salamat po.
06:36 Thank you, Ezra.
