00:00 I'm Matt Fox and this is the Magic of Middle Earth exhibition here at Experience Barnsley
00:05 and it's free to visit for all ages right through to April 6th.
00:09 And this is where it all began, in a hole in the ground lived the Hobbit.
00:13 Tolkien wrote this back in 1937 and this is a first edition, first impression, one of
00:18 the original 1500 copies and just one of 200 treasures that you can see here at Experience
00:22 Barnsley.
00:23 It all began for me on long journeys to visit my grandparents.
00:27 We listened to audiobooks of the Hobbit and Tolkien really is known as the grandfather
00:32 of fantasy and this exhibition celebrates all of those roots and branches that have
00:37 grown from his initial inspiration.
00:39 There are lots of things to see here.
00:42 I think one of the things I particularly like is a big battle diorama.
00:45 Battles are one of the key things that happen through the Lord of the Rings books.
00:49 There's the One Ring itself which is a lovely bit of jewelry that you can see and we also
00:53 have an animatronic dragon to scare the little kids when they approach which rolls its head
00:57 and sort of flaps its wings at them.
01:00 The exhibition is running through to April 6th 2024 and it's free to visit for all ages
01:05 so come on through.
