00:00 (engine revving)
00:02 This time it's road kill nights
00:11 with 50,000 of our best friends
00:14 in Pontiac, Michigan on Woodward Avenue.
00:17 - We're owing two at this deal.
00:19 - If you're gonna lose, lose in front of a lot of people.
00:21 Woo!
00:22 (engine revving)
00:26 (tires screeching)
00:29 (upbeat music)
00:33 Back in episode 54 of Road Kill,
00:44 we got this 1970 Dodge Challenger dirt track car.
00:48 And it is a complete beater, but it runs and drives
00:51 with 318 small block power and a 904 automatic.
00:55 (upbeat music)
00:57 Our plan was to ship this thing
01:01 all the way to the middle of America,
01:02 Ohio to be exact, where we'd go to the Mopar Nats,
01:05 searching the swap meet for speed parts
01:07 to make this thing faster.
01:08 - Slap 'em on the car right there at National Trail Raceway
01:12 and then hit the road to our own event,
01:14 Road Kill Nights in Pontiac, Michigan.
01:15 You know how you need a Sherpa when you go to Mount Everest?
01:21 Well, you need a guide when you go
01:23 to the Mopar Nationals too.
01:24 - And that's this guy, Daniel Boshiers,
01:26 a buddy of ours who completely knows the ins and outs
01:29 of these cars, but most importantly, he brought the tools.
01:32 - What do you think all this is gonna cost?
01:38 - More than we have.
01:39 - These are Mopar people.
01:41 You spray paint any kind of weird code on something,
01:45 and suddenly it's $10,000.
01:46 - So that's 350, fixing the fuel cell and everything,
01:49 we're gonna get that done for a hundred bucks.
01:52 - All right.
01:53 - So how much did I just spend?
01:53 - So if you're correct, you're at $1,100, $1,250, $1,850,
01:58 $2,200, $2,300 is what you think you're spending.
02:04 Okay.
02:06 - We may have to compromise on some of this.
02:09 - $2,300.
02:10 All right, let's shop.
02:11 I feel like we still did get a pretty decent deal
02:16 on the car.
02:17 - We did.
02:18 - Even without gear oil in it or trans fluid.
02:21 - Or a functional fuel holding device.
02:23 - Yeah.
02:24 Even with all those negative attributes,
02:26 I feel like we scored.
02:27 - We're looking to hop up the 318 cheap and easy.
02:32 We're thinking that we're gonna need an intake,
02:34 camshaft, and headers at the minimum,
02:37 and the car really needs some steeper rear end gears.
02:39 Wow, people are cleared out of a lot of stuff.
02:45 We're here two days late for the good stuff.
02:48 (car honking)
02:50 Should've been here yesterday.
02:55 You got any small block headers?
02:58 - Small block?
02:58 - 318?
02:59 - No, sir.
03:00 - Ah.
03:01 - Headers.
03:06 Those are big block headers.
03:08 - Oh.
03:09 - Yeah.
03:09 - Well, yesterday was the date.
03:10 - We know, we know.
03:12 - We need a montage of everybody telling us
03:14 we should've been here yesterday.
03:15 - Yeah, exactly.
03:16 - Thank you.
03:17 - Thanks a lot.
03:18 - Well, we haven't bought anything yet,
03:20 but it's a massive swap meet, so I have hope
03:24 that just around the next corner is everything we need
03:27 all in one spot.
03:27 - We should've been here yesterday.
03:29 Our demands are not that high.
03:30 I think we can find what we need.
03:33 - No linkage.
03:34 - No linkage, but you know what?
03:34 This is the easier linkage to deal with.
03:36 - Yeah.
03:37 - 'Cause they're in line.
03:38 It'll work.
03:39 - This'll work.
03:39 You want eight, I said six.
03:42 - Let's just meet in the middle.
03:45 Then you don't have to carry it home.
03:47 - But that's a genuine Mopar tunnel ram
03:49 with two Holley 450 carbs on it.
03:51 I just bought it and a beer.
03:54 $775.
03:56 One piece of the puzzle.
03:58 - So good.
04:01 - Yes.
04:01 - I feel good about the tunnel ram.
04:02 That's gonna make the car.
04:03 - Oh, it'll look amazing.
04:05 - I'm dinging you 25 bucks off my budget for that.
04:08 - It's worth it.
04:09 I got a beer.
04:09 (laughs)
04:11 - Just for this.
04:12 - $3,400 for a hood.
04:14 - Factory shaker.
04:15 (people chattering)
04:17 Mopar guys are so weird.
04:19 It's more in the neighborhood.
04:22 It's got a sump in it.
04:23 They take 30 bucks for this?
04:25 - No.
04:27 - Nah.
04:28 - I want the 40.
04:29 - All right.
04:30 - All right.
04:31 - $40.
04:31 - We're doing pretty well.
04:32 We got a tunnel ram with carburetors.
04:34 We got our fuel cell.
04:35 I just got brand new headers for 90 bucks
04:37 and he got a beer.
04:38 (engine roaring)
04:41 (upbeat music)
04:43 - It's 2.45.
04:48 We need to hustle up because I think that the swap meet
04:51 is gonna be a ghost town tomorrow
04:52 'cause it's gonna rain and it's gonna be Sunday.
04:54 So anything that's like Mopar specific that we need,
04:56 we better get here today.
04:58 - We're interested in this.
05:04 How much do you want for it?
05:05 - He told us 400 before
05:07 and that comes with carrying it back to our car, right?
05:09 - Ooh.
05:10 (laughing)
05:12 - Would you throw it in a couple of beers
05:13 if we bought it for 400 bucks?
05:15 There you go.
05:16 - I feel better now.
05:17 - All right.
05:18 We'll do that.
05:19 (laughing)
05:19 (engine roaring)
05:22 - So I pretty much think we're done shopping.
05:32 We struck out on wheels and tires,
05:34 but we got everything else we need
05:36 other than the little knick knacks.
05:37 So I think we're gonna walk a couple more rows
05:40 and then run for our lives.
05:41 - What happened?
05:43 - There's a (beep) cloud coming.
05:45 - That one?
05:45 - Yeah.
05:46 - Yeah.
05:47 We're gonna die.
05:49 1,300, 1290.
05:52 What do we have left?
05:54 - Zero, one.
05:56 We have $1,110 left.
05:58 - Yep.
05:58 - All right.
05:59 - I think we're doing pretty good.
06:00 - That's not bad.
06:01 It really isn't.
06:02 - Plus we've acquired libations.
06:06 (upbeat music)
06:08 - How do you make your car safer in the rain?
06:24 You can install a tunnel ram and a cam and lifters
06:27 and gears and all kinds of things.
06:29 Everything but rain tires.
06:31 That's what we're doing today.
06:33 (upbeat music)
06:35 - We had a pile of parts
06:38 that we'd scored out of the swap meet.
06:39 We still had to make a trip to Jeg's though.
06:41 And while they are our sponsor,
06:43 we still had to spend ourselves clean in there.
06:46 - I think we blew the last of our budget.
06:47 - Totally.
06:48 - So the build went about as well
06:51 as any roadkill build does.
06:53 - This is gonna be a lot of work.
06:54 I just realized.
06:55 - Well, here's an update on our $775 tunnel ram.
07:03 First, never trust a gray beard and a wine shirt.
07:07 'Cause he lied to me.
07:09 Both accelerator pumps shot.
07:11 One's missing the spring that's supposed to be under it,
07:13 under the diaphragm.
07:14 So it doesn't even wanna work.
07:16 And these weren't even actually bolted down.
07:19 I had to drill and rethread all eight holes of the intake.
07:23 Ha!
07:26 - There you go.
07:30 I like the way you think.
07:32 This is real bad.
07:41 I would never let someone other than myself
07:46 and Finnegan drive this car.
07:48 - It took several days to rebuild the top end of this motor.
07:51 And frankly, all we were really doing
07:53 was swapping in a cam, lifters, valve springs,
07:57 a tunnel ram and carburetors.
07:58 And oh yeah, a set of headers.
08:00 (drilling)
08:02 I'm just realizing there is virtually no chance
08:10 that these headers fit with the factory column shift.
08:13 Right now, the engine's all disassembled
08:15 and we don't have the parts to put back together.
08:18 The manifolds are off and the headers won't fit.
08:20 And the tubes cut halfway through.
08:22 - And we can't put the engine back to the way it was before
08:26 'cause we gave the cam shaft to a cam.
08:28 - Wait, we had a leaky gas tank?
08:30 We don't need more.
08:31 - That's right.
08:32 We do have a fuel cell ratchet strapped to the trunk.
08:36 - You would think after five years of doing this.
08:39 No, you wouldn't think that.
08:42 - Oh, we're in deep bandini.
08:46 - 466 for cam, lifters, linkage.
08:51 - 10 minus four is six.
08:54 - 644.
08:55 - 466 at Mancini, 560 at JEGS.
08:59 All of this stuff adds up to 1290, right?
09:02 - No, we did get this.
09:03 It's not in there.
09:04 - Tools can't count.
09:05 - Oh, okay.
09:06 - Right?
09:07 That's a new roadkill rule.
09:08 Tools don't count.
09:10 40 on the cell.
09:11 That's, yeah.
09:12 14 minus six is what?
09:15 Eight?
09:16 We have $84 left.
09:18 And most of that we blew on fluids and stuff.
09:20 So we are at zero.
09:24 - Is that new math?
09:25 It's really cheap to build a car at the swap meet.
09:28 Everybody should do this.
09:30 Especially when you show up when the swap meet's over
09:31 and then it rains.
09:32 We don't even have gas money to get there.
09:36 I can't even afford to pay attention right now.
09:38 Dude, we are broke.
09:41 - I guess we can't afford to install our headers, right?
09:44 If we can't afford to install our headers,
09:46 we can go back to JEGS and return the mufflers and stuff,
09:49 which gives us back to like another 250 bucks,
09:52 which means we can't afford to install the headers.
09:55 - Yes.
09:57 We're not very good at this.
09:59 Obviously.
10:01 The best part about this whole deal
10:03 is we somehow managed to spend $2,300
10:07 to arguably make the car slower.
10:09 (upbeat music)
10:12 There we go.
10:16 (engine revving)
10:19 That's what it's gonna be like when we drive.
10:27 Motor run.
10:28 Hey, guess what?
10:30 There's a tunnel ram on that motor.
10:32 And it runs, and it runs.
10:34 And finally it runs.
10:38 And importantly, it runs with a tunnel ram.
10:40 Now, anybody will tell you that a tunnel ram
10:43 is the exact wrong intake manifold
10:45 for a virtually stock 318 cubic inch small block.
10:49 And it turns out it is.
10:51 - I'm gonna be able to warm chicken nuggets on this
10:53 when we park it.
10:55 It's dual purpose.
10:56 - Well, it's finally Wednesday morning
11:02 and we've got to be at Roadkill Nights in Pontiac, Michigan
11:05 by Friday morning.
11:06 So we've got all day today and all day tomorrow
11:08 to make roughly a five hour drive.
11:10 - So I got an email this morning.
11:12 - What did it say?
11:14 - There's a guy selling my dream car,
11:16 the car I used to get a ride to high school in,
11:18 on our way, sitting in a field.
11:20 - Really? - Yeah.
11:21 It's complete, 400 four speed three gram.
11:24 - Really? - Yeah.
11:26 - Runs and drives?
11:27 - Ran when parked.
11:28 - Let's go there.
11:30 - All right.
11:32 I'll tell him.
11:33 I really didn't think you'd say yes.
11:34 This is awesome. - Is it on the way?
11:35 - It's on the way.
11:36 - Oh, well then let's go.
11:37 See, we can't let it rain down our velocity stacks
11:41 while we're driving.
11:42 We figure we need some airflow,
11:45 but we also want to be able to stop for gas 100 times
11:47 and to eat and not have the rain falling
11:49 straight down in it.
11:50 So these things end up not only being perfectly styled,
11:54 but also aerodynamic.
11:56 - Yeah, we don't want to slow ourselves down.
11:58 - I like it.
11:59 - Yeah.
12:00 - I like that a lot.
12:01 Just the good old boys.
12:04 Oh, my back.
12:08 I've forgotten the trick to gracefulness
12:11 of getting in and out of this one, obviously.
12:14 - So y'all call when you need something
12:16 about 15 minutes from now.
12:17 - Right.
12:18 - Try it again.
12:28 - See ya.
12:34 Runs good.
12:38 - Hey, we have power steering.
12:40 - Yeah.
12:42 - Did we tighten the lug nuts?
12:43 - I don't know.
12:47 - Not really.
12:48 - This isn't bad.
12:58 - It's not bad at all.
12:59 - This is the right way to break in a camp.
13:02 Constant speed, one RPM.
13:07 - Yeah.
13:07 (engine revving)
13:10 - It ain't making any power.
13:15 - That's gotta be dead lean.
13:18 - Yeah, it doesn't make any power.
13:21 - Yeah.
13:22 - We gotta fix it.
13:23 - Hit it one time for me.
13:31 (laughing)
13:32 - Hit it one time for me.
13:34 What's happening is that if you put it in gear
13:37 and put some load on it,
13:38 or if you step on the gas,
13:41 it just backfires and dies,
13:42 tends to be a lean situation.
13:44 So we're going to put a larger accelerator
13:46 discharge nozzle in it,
13:48 more commonly known as a squirter.
13:51 So we might have to have ride two of us at the drag strip.
14:02 - This is embarrassing.
14:05 (engine revving)
14:08 - Pretty good all the way around.
14:12 Now we have a car that doesn't do burnouts.
14:14 - You left your gas can here
14:15 and you still have tools sitting on top of the car.
14:18 - There we go.
14:21 I got it.
14:22 Tag, you're in.
14:24 - No way.
14:25 - Oh yeah.
14:26 - It's on your side.
14:27 - So now it's, you're in.
14:28 - Nope.
14:28 - Nope.
14:30 - I'd rather crawl out the back window
14:31 than crawl out of this side window.
14:32 - Go ahead, I'd like to see that.
14:35 - Yeah.
14:35 - The guy missing the gallbladder,
14:38 give him the can.
14:39 - How's your spleen?
14:41 - Oh, it'll be fine.
14:42 Do that three or four more times,
14:44 be back to normal.
14:45 Well, it's weird at mid range, it's happier.
14:51 Everywhere else, it's garbage.
14:54 It's not good.
14:55 (laughing)
14:58 (engine revving)
15:00 - We need to fix this.
15:07 - Yeah, this is worse.
15:08 - At this point, the engine is still running like garbage.
15:13 It's so bad that we can't even drive it anymore.
15:15 So we go to pull in and watch how I just serve up Finnegan
15:19 into oncoming traffic.
15:21 - Okay.
15:22 Trying.
15:25 - Oh boy.
15:26 - Stop.
15:27 Go, go, go, go.
15:28 Oh, (beep)
15:32 - Whoa.
15:33 Man, I was standing there with my hand up
15:41 and that guy just kept coming.
15:42 - That was sketchy.
15:45 - So much fun.
15:50 We're rolling down the road and this thing just died
15:52 and would not start back up.
15:53 We were cranking and cranking and thought it was flooded.
15:56 We got pulled over here and it looks like
15:58 there's no fuel at all in this front bowl.
16:01 Basically, we're completely lost.
16:03 Nothing.
16:06 Zero.
16:08 - Fuel pump dead.
16:11 - We still got nothing in the bowls.
16:17 How many miles did we get?
16:19 I'm thinking 15, somewhere around there.
16:22 It's above average for us.
16:23 - I didn't realize how much we actually needed
16:25 both shares and his tools.
16:26 - Mostly his tools.
16:29 - Yeah.
16:30 - I think our pump sucks.
16:38 - It's all we've got left to blame.
16:42 And that was the end of the float bowl.
16:44 So yeah, our fuel pump sucks.
16:46 - All right, I'll go find one.
16:48 The electric fuel pump was part of the fix.
16:50 It did make the engine run, but not much better.
16:53 All it enabled us to really do was put a few more miles
16:56 under our belt that day.
16:57 After all of that, we have no idea
17:00 what the tune up on this thing is gonna be.
17:02 - Okay.
17:05 - Think it does burnouts?
17:06 Right into the water.
17:09 - No, doesn't do burnouts at all.
17:13 - We're gonna have to fix this
17:14 or we're gonna be humiliated at Roadkill Nights.
17:17 - Again.
17:20 (engine revving)
17:23 - The next morning we hit the road
17:40 to go see this dude, Jeremy,
17:42 a guy who had a '68 Firebird behind a barn.
17:45 - And I have to admit, in the back of my mind,
17:48 I'm thinking, you know what?
17:49 Maybe we could leave the Challenger behind
17:51 and drive the Firebird up to Roadkill Nights.
17:54 - He also had a whole bunch of cool steam-powered tractors
17:57 from the 1800s.
17:58 - Stuff people figured out back in the early 1900s.
18:05 It's amazing.
18:06 And how they cast and forged all of this.
18:09 - 1912.
18:13 Well, where's the Firebird hiding?
18:16 - The Firebird is behind the barn.
18:18 - Behind the barn.
18:20 (upbeat music)
18:22 - Came from a town just south here, Findlay.
18:26 Guy was the second owner.
18:27 He bought it in, I believe, '70.
18:29 - Did he say if it ran when he bought it from him?
18:31 - It ran when he parked it.
18:32 - Oh, wow.
18:33 That's a cool car.
18:36 We could probably get this running.
18:37 We're somewhere in Findlay, Ohio right now
18:39 because this guy got ahold of Finnegan's email
18:41 and sent him a note and said,
18:43 "Man, I've got this car that could be perfect
18:45 "for like drag week or Roadkill or something,
18:47 "and it's a '68 Firebird 400 four-speed."
18:50 - Yeah, I've got beer in the refrigerator, too.
18:51 (laughing)
18:52 - This guy's just, drag it out, dude.
18:54 Let's do this.
18:55 Let's do this.
18:56 I like the car.
18:57 I like the car a lot.
18:57 - We have to at least try it.
18:59 - It's pretty neat.
19:01 This is really close to the car
19:03 that I got to ride around in to high school when I was a kid.
19:07 - But better 'cause it's a 400 four-speed.
19:09 - Yeah.
19:09 - Put a battery in it, put some fluids in it,
19:14 and see if we can't get it running.
19:15 And if it runs, then we'll see if the brakes work.
19:18 And if the brakes work, we may drive this to Michigan.
19:22 We may take our Pontiac to Pontiac.
19:24 (upbeat music)
19:26 Woo-hoo-hoo!
19:44 (laughing)
19:47 This is not the good side of the car.
19:48 - Oh yeah, it's got a lot of rot.
19:52 - Yeah, this side of the car.
19:53 - That door is pretty far gone over there.
19:57 - So is this one, the door, the rocker, the quarter.
20:00 I'll just keep looking at the other side of the car.
20:03 - If this runs really good, the answer is buy it,
20:06 drive it, get it out of your system, flip it.
20:08 - The flip might be hard given how many holes are in it.
20:12 Now, if Pontiac guys, it's a 404 speed car.
20:15 - Okay.
20:16 - It's not a Hemi Cuda, but it's a 3D3 Challenger.
20:19 - Okay.
20:20 All right, well, let's see if it runs good.
20:23 I'm back on the train.
20:25 I just can't walk on this side of the car.
20:26 It just derails the train completely.
20:29 - Yeah.
20:30 (upbeat music)
20:32 Okay, so cranking.
20:39 - Don't forget to put the clutch in.
20:41 - I've got the clutch in.
20:42 Wipers work.
20:43 - Wow, the radio works.
20:49 We just rolled the thing in here
20:55 and we're trying to figure out how to get it running,
20:56 fix the wiring all up.
20:58 Now we're gonna have to check spark
20:59 and pour some gas in it, see if it runs.
21:02 - Nope, no spark.
21:09 - I was dying to make this engine run.
21:10 And so we turned the key and nothing.
21:13 After a little bit of troubleshooting,
21:15 we figured out that it was no spark.
21:17 And I had to deal with ignition points,
21:19 which at this point in time are like kryptonite
21:22 to most car guys used to electronic ignition.
21:25 But I finally figured out it was the coil that was dead.
21:28 We robbed the one off the Challenger,
21:30 slapped it on the Firebird and that garbage fired right up.
21:34 Yeah.
21:36 Sweet.
21:39 - Wow.
21:40 - The touch of the key.
21:42 That was cool.
21:44 A little bit of smoke.
21:46 - Nice work, sir.
21:50 - Nice.
21:54 - Wow.
21:55 - That was awesome.
21:55 - I cannot believe that worked.
21:57 - Do you see how quickly it fired up?
21:59 - You shook the critter out?
22:00 - Hey buddy.
22:01 Bye bud.
22:04 Man, that was good.
22:07 - That was pretty damn awesome.
22:08 - I cannot believe that ran.
22:09 So as much as I want to love the Firebird,
22:13 sadly I can't get past the frame rails
22:16 that are basically ready to fall out of the back of the car.
22:19 And you know, sheet metal is one thing,
22:21 but the structural integrity of the car,
22:23 that just kind of makes it one of those projects where,
22:26 yeah, with a hundred grand in five years,
22:28 that would be awesome.
22:30 But I don't have either one of those things.
22:31 So we're going to pass on the Firebird
22:33 and focus our energies on getting the Challenger
22:35 ready for tomorrow.
22:38 - Tomorrow?
22:38 - So we left it behind,
22:39 but at least Jeremy had his car running.
22:42 And I'm hoping that in the end he'll fix this thing
22:44 and he'll enjoy it, even though I can't.
22:47 - Dude, that's cool stuff.
22:48 - This place was awesome.
22:50 - Yeah.
22:52 - And the good news is-
22:53 - Thanks again.
22:54 - I did get a short bit of experience behind the wheel
22:58 first gen Firebird.
23:00 - Some Pontiac guy wants that car and will restore it.
23:03 (upbeat music)
23:06 - This is fun.
23:13 We made it a whole 48 miles though.
23:16 So that's not too bad.
23:17 Could be worse.
23:19 Thing I'm really worried about at this point
23:21 is that this car still runs like garbage.
23:24 Oh, getting old.
23:28 (engine revving)
23:33 (laughing)
23:36 10 o'clock at night.
23:43 We finally made it to Pontiac, Michigan
23:45 and we're going to change the rear gears
23:49 from the highway gears that are in it at 276
23:51 to drag racing gears, 430s.
23:53 Remember when we brought this thing home from Oregon
23:56 and blew up a rear end in the middle of nowhere,
23:59 had to change it in the hotel parking lot?
24:01 Same thing's happening here.
24:03 I think the end of this drive shaft is hashed
24:11 'cause there is going to be no getting that U-joint yoke
24:17 in there, that U-joint rather.
24:20 It's not good.
24:25 No, it's not.
24:27 So,
24:29 (clicking)
24:32 it's the night before the race.
24:33 What do you do?
24:34 - The next morning, we were victorious once again
24:45 as we found a local shop that had exactly
24:47 the conversion U-joint that we needed.
24:50 - You know what's crazy is the single biggest moment
24:52 of our careers, Roadkill Nights on Woodward Avenue
24:56 is happening right now.
24:57 And there's thousands of people over there
24:59 partying and drag racing.
25:01 And Fryburger and I are sitting in a motel parking lot
25:05 fixing our race car.
25:06 - Last night when we left, we had the wrong U-joint
25:09 in the drive shaft right here.
25:11 Now we have the right one.
25:12 Thanks to DTS, drive train specialist,
25:14 it's a local company that has all kinds of stuff.
25:17 So we are hooked up with that.
25:19 And this thing should slam right together.
25:21 - One, two, three.
25:23 (car engine revving)
25:26 - Woo, that was a good one.
25:30 And because we ran out of budget,
25:35 we will be drag racing our Cooper Radials.
25:39 No drag slicks for us.
25:41 The drag slicks we've been carrying on the top
25:43 this entire time were for the general mayhem.
25:52 - Well, things are looking up.
25:53 Gear change is complete.
25:55 We are now on our way from the hotel to Roadkill Nights.
25:58 - With police escort.
26:00 - Yeah, this is pretty much the best day at work ever.
26:02 - Yeah. - Yeah.
26:03 - I wanna hear the siren.
26:06 - I feel impervious right now.
26:08 Don't you? - Yeah.
26:09 We're above the law right now.
26:11 - Yeah.
26:12 - The gear is better.
26:13 It's definitely spunkier.
26:15 - But still a 318 with a tunnel ram.
26:21 (laughing)
26:23 - When was the last time you floored it
26:24 through a red light behind a cop?
26:26 - With him waving at me to do it.
26:28 That was awesome.
26:29 - Wow.
26:36 That's terrible.
26:37 - Yeah, three quarter throttle is all you get on this.
26:39 That thing's awesome.
26:43 - What's up, guys?
26:51 - I can't believe there's still a line to get in.
26:53 If you whack it, does it just die?
27:09 Oh, dude.
27:11 That's not drivable.
27:18 This right now is more embarrassing
27:20 than Gas Monkey last year.
27:22 - We got our gears in our car,
27:29 but that really didn't make it run all that better.
27:31 There was still a problem with the carburetors
27:33 that we had to tune.
27:35 The clock was ticking, the sun was going down.
27:37 There's a guy waiting to drag race us,
27:39 and we've got a car that will not get off the starting line
27:42 without backfiring.
27:43 - The thing is, that whole event is going on over there.
27:45 There's literally a thousand cars,
27:48 and they're just drying the track off
27:49 to go drag racing again.
27:51 And I have the socket, and we're over here.
27:54 So we're kind of in a hurry.
27:55 - Finally, Roadkill Nights sponsored by Dodge,
27:59 and it is going off.
28:01 There are literally tens of thousands of people here.
28:05 There's drag racing right on Woodward Avenue,
28:08 right on the street.
28:09 - Illegal racing on Woodward.
28:12 - Roadkill Nights is the single greatest car event
28:15 I've ever been to in my life.
28:17 Dodge is giving thrill rides, and new Vipers,
28:19 and Hellcats, people are just partying everywhere.
28:22 Meanwhile, we are still stuck with a Challenger
28:33 that runs like doggy do.
28:35 But I think I've got a plan to make this work.
28:38 All we did is adjust the position of the squirter pump cam,
28:44 and it seems to be better.
28:45 It's hitting more fuel sooner.
28:48 - We're also taking off the hot dog grill.
28:50 - Wow, there's a delay before the secondary
28:57 start to pull fuel.
28:59 We have to figure something out,
29:02 'cause I just got news.
29:03 We have to run between seven and eight,
29:06 and it is 6.45.
29:07 Finally, we crutched it together.
29:09 - Throwing a bunch of main jet and accelerator pump cam,
29:13 that was the difference,
29:14 and that's what enabled us to get to the starting line
29:16 before the sun went down for our drag race.
29:18 - Oh, good.
29:20 Fat and happy.
29:22 And if this thing backfires and dies,
29:25 I am gonna be humiliated.
29:26 Yeah.
29:29 We can get close to wide open.
29:42 I hate to borrow trouble by like pumping you up,
29:44 but I legitimately think you have a shot at this.
29:47 - I feel good.
29:47 We've made more progress in the last two hours
29:49 than we've made in three days.
29:50 Look at all the people.
29:55 - Oh, dude.
29:56 It's packed.
30:00 Are you fired up?
30:01 - Oh, man, I'm ready for this.
30:03 I'm ready for this.
30:04 (dramatic music)
30:07 This is insane.
30:13 He actually has a shot at this, a genuine chance,
30:17 'cause the guy we're racing, he has a stick,
30:20 has too much power, he's got road race tires,
30:23 he's not a drag racer,
30:25 so we've stacked this deck just right
30:27 so that we look heroic,
30:28 and I told him if he loses, just keep going.
30:31 Don't even come back.
30:32 - To the bar.
30:33 And finally, here's the punchline of the entire show.
30:37 We came to Roadkill Nights dead set to drag race
30:41 Mike Musto from House of Muscle.
30:44 You've seen him all over YouTube,
30:46 and now you're gonna see him right here
30:47 with his '69 Daytona.
30:49 He just drove this car all the way across the country,
30:52 and now he thinks he's probably gonna humiliate us.
30:56 - It's kind of a big deal on the internet,
30:58 'cause he gets to drive cars for a living
30:59 and talk about them while he's driving.
31:01 Is that a skill everyone has?
31:03 - No, but it's similar to kind of what you do,
31:05 except the caliber of car I drive
31:06 is a little different than.
31:08 My cars are owned by somebody.
31:09 - Yeah.
31:10 - Other than--
31:11 - My car is nobody wants to own.
31:12 - I think what you've got here is a real clear example
31:15 of the difference between House of Muscle and Roadkill.
31:18 Over here at House of Muscle,
31:19 we've got a '69 Daytona clone
31:21 with a stroker big block in it and a six speed.
31:24 It makes like 500 horsepower,
31:26 and over in this corner, Roadkill,
31:28 with a clapped out, beat up dirt track car
31:31 with a 318 for power and a delusional hope
31:34 that maybe we can actually outrun the Daytona.
31:37 This is it, drag racing on Woodward Avenue
31:41 at Roadkill Nights.
31:42 This is amazing.
31:43 The crowd is completely packed,
31:45 the full length of the track here.
31:47 It's a little bit more than an eighth of a mile.
31:49 Look at all the people crowding the fence across the street.
31:51 We're guessing 50,000 people here,
31:54 and we're about to give them the big show,
31:55 our clapped out piece of garbage challenger
31:57 versus Mike Musto.
32:00 He's going down.
32:02 - I think he probably doesn't know how to drag race.
32:03 He's probably gonna smoke the tires
32:05 and Finnegan's gonna win.
32:06 At least that's my plan.
32:07 - Yeah!
32:20 - I'm actually anxious.
32:28 I want him to win.
32:29 (dramatic music)
32:32 - No, no, like not even a little bit.
32:51 Not even a little bit.
32:53 (dramatic music)
32:56 (engine revving)
33:10 - Go, go, go!
33:22 (engine revving)
33:25 - Oh!
33:43 (laughing)
33:47 - Oh, you piece of crap, I lost.
33:50 I can't believe that garbage spun the tires off the line.
33:54 That sucked, ah!
33:56 That thing's fast.
34:00 Oh, I really like Mike.
34:02 I can't even be mad at him.
34:04 Oh well, it was still fun.
34:06 Oh man, how does this feel?
34:11 That feels pretty incredible
34:13 that we were able to pull this off
34:14 and get that many people to show up for this race.
34:17 It's been an awesome, awesome night.
34:19 We didn't really expect to win anything with this.
34:20 We just wanted to have a lot of fun.
34:22 And to me, the victory is that we made that tunnel ram
34:24 actually function at the very last second.
34:27 That's enough Roadkill win for me.
34:29 And this is pretty cool.
34:30 Check out the grandstands.
34:31 If you're gonna lose,
34:33 lose in front of a crowd in Pontiac, Michigan.
34:35 - Roadkill, 0-2 at Roadkill Nights.
34:38 Best day at work ever.
34:40 I don't even care if I lost.
34:42 - Ah, once again, we got our butts kicked on Roadkill.
34:45 But you can't blame us.
34:47 Losing's not that bad when losing is an adventure.
34:50 - Last year, we threw together Roadkill Nights
34:55 in the parking lot of the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.
34:58 This year, we raced right on the street in Pontiac.
35:02 And everyone's asking, "What are you gonna do next year?"
35:05 Well, we're already working on that behind the scenes.
35:08 And you know what?
35:11 We should probably start thinking now
35:13 about putting together a car
35:15 where we can actually win a race.
35:18 But that would be breaking tradition.
35:20 You can find all the parts from these builds
35:25 by visiting jegs.com/roadkill.
35:28 (rock music)
35:31 (car engine revving)
35:34 - Fryburger doesn't know it,
35:40 but later on I'm gonna auction off his footwear on eBay
35:45 to get enough money to get us the things we need in life.
35:49 Like, pride.
35:50 That's really what this show is missing.
35:53 A little bit of pride.
35:55 - That's loud.
35:56 - Your gas can is unstrapped.
36:02 - It ain't going anywhere.
36:05 - I'll pay you 10 bucks to get out and go strap it down.
36:13 - Dude, if you ever had a General E Charger,
36:16 you could mini tub it and put that 15 by 10 on it
36:18 with a 15.8 in the front, and you would be heroic.
36:22 Just putting that in your ear.
36:23 I might need this.
36:24 - I don't need cash on me, but...
36:29 Is it against the rules to go back
36:32 and get the muscle truck or the Maserati
36:34 or something with some horsepower?
36:36 (laughs)
36:38 (upbeat music)
36:40 (engine revving)
36:46 (upbeat music)
