On this episode of Roadkill
Transcript
00:00 On this episode of Roadkill, we drive all the way to the Bonneville salt flats so David
00:04 could kill our Camaro.
00:06 There's three pistons left.
00:07 [MUSIC]
00:17 [SOUND]
00:43 On the last episode, we bought this 73 Chevy ramp truck for 3,500 bucks to haul
00:48 our race car to Bonneville.
00:49 It's also completely untested and unproven, and
00:53 we've got to use it to drive 650 miles with a race car in the back.
00:57 Top speed racing is kind of the thing these days.
01:00 It's popped up all over.
01:01 You see stuff going on in standing mile events in several states.
01:05 But the granddaddy, the biggie, is Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
01:10 And as a matter of fact, in 1949, Hot Rod Magazine helped this event start at
01:14 the Bonneville Salt Flats.
01:15 It was the first time Hot Rodders had run there.
01:18 To me, it's really got a lot of history, and it's my passion.
01:20 It's the racing that I like to do.
01:22 We've run this '81 Camaro there since 2004.
01:26 I've got a partnership deal with Keith and Tanya Turk where they own the car and
01:30 Keith sort of manages that mechanical part of it, and I'm in charge of the engines.
01:34 I failed on that a couple of years ago when a carburetor vent fell through this
01:39 big block and completely destroyed the engine.
01:42 We went back and got a record on two cylinders, and
01:44 that destroyed the thing even more.
01:46 But that was 2011, 2012, we didn't race.
01:49 This year, we had to do it.
01:51 And so we rebuilt that engine.
01:52 Finnegan threw it together.
01:53 We took it out to the dyno at West Tech.
01:55 It made 1,100 horsepower.
01:57 By the time we got to the dyno,
01:59 I had spent nearly 72 hours straight building the engine over at my shop.
02:03 I can build an engine in three days, but usually I've spent two weeks mocking
02:07 the parts up to make sure they fit before I do that.
02:09 So this deal, total road kill, total mess.
02:13 Nothing bolted onto this engine without some massaging and some cursing.
02:17 What we've got here is a big block Chevy.
02:20 It's 489 cubic inches, which is a 454 with a quarter inch stroke in it.
02:26 The big deal is the Vortex supercharger, which is making 10 pounds of boost.
02:31 And I'm blowing through a carburetor, which is a little bit unconventional.
02:34 But the thing is, in the classic category that I'm racing in,
02:37 you have to have a carburetor.
02:39 And so this is what I've chosen to do.
02:41 People also ask, where's your intercooler?
02:43 The atomization of the gas coming out of the boosters actually pulls heat
02:46 out of the air.
02:47 And so you drop 100 degrees across the carburetor.
02:50 200 degrees in is 100 degrees out.
02:53 [MUSIC]
02:55 >> All this room to carry everything you need to go race.
02:59 I couldn't get any better than this.
03:00 Sure, it's old and scraped up and whatever.
03:03 But it's got character.
03:05 Even if it doesn't get us there, it's got character.
03:09 >> This is our first attempt at putting this car on the ramp truck, and
03:11 it's not looking like it's gonna go very well.
03:13 [MUSIC]
03:16 >> Go this way.
03:17 >> Is it already hitting something?
03:18 [MUSIC]
03:20 See, now stop.
03:21 >> Turn it this way.
03:22 [MUSIC]
03:25 >> Okay.
03:25 [MUSIC]
03:27 Okay, hang on.
03:29 >> The easy thing to do would have been to throw the Bonneville car into an
03:32 enclosed trailer, but man, I've always wanted the ramp truck.
03:36 What I don't know is how it's gonna handle with 5,000 pounds of
03:40 irreplaceable race car on the back.
03:42 We're hitting the road in the morning.
03:43 [MUSIC]
03:53 >> Good over here.
03:57 >> Let's go to Utah again.
04:00 >> It's only been two days.
04:02 I kind of miss the place.
04:03 [MUSIC]
04:07 >> As compared to some of the other pieces of crap we've driven long distance,
04:11 this is like being in a limousine.
04:13 >> I don't know why the air conditioning isn't on right now.
04:14 >> You want to indulge yourself in all the luxuries right away?
04:18 Radio, air conditioning, windows that go all the way up.
04:20 >> We might need the air conditioning before it overheats.
04:23 We might as well enjoy it now.
04:25 >> We'll just get it warmed up right away?
04:26 >> Yeah. >> All right, here we go.
04:30 >> Just feel the pleasure coming out of the dash.
04:32 >> 1973 GM Air.
04:35 [MUSIC]
04:39 >> I don't know if I should say this out loud, but I'm actually cold now.
04:42 >> I am too.
04:42 It's completely not right.
04:44 >> I'm gonna turn down the plagiarizer here.
04:46 >> I didn't want to admit it.
04:47 I'm glad you went there.
04:49 >> That's some good air conditioning.
04:50 Maybe it's really not that cold.
04:51 We're just not used to having air conditioning.
04:53 So it feels really cold.
04:55 [MUSIC]
04:59 >> 60 feels like this is where this thing wants to go.
05:03 >> Yep.
05:04 >> Not quite the speed limit, but
05:06 faster than you're able to legally go with the trailer behind you.
05:09 And that's all I care about.
05:11 >> What I don't understand is the complete lack of drive shaft vibration.
05:14 >> Well, it's stock.
05:15 Nobody's lowered the thing.
05:16 >> I know, I'm not used to that.
05:18 Look, factory printout of when this thing was purchased.
05:25 This came from Oregon.
05:26 >> Does it say who bought it?
05:27 I'm trying to find the guy.
05:30 >> Sold to Sherrill's Mazda.
05:32 This was a Mazda dealership truck.
05:34 >> A Mazda dealership bought a Chevy to haul Mazdas.
05:39 >> In 1973.
05:40 >> Interesting.
05:43 >> When stopped on an upgrade, do not hold the truck with the engine.
05:45 Use the service brake.
05:47 Just sitting there stalling against the converter on a hill.
05:50 [LAUGH]
05:51 Caution, do not accelerate the engine more than ten seconds while
05:55 holding the vehicle with the brakes.
05:57 They thought we were gonna go drag racing, I guess.
06:00 >> I don't like these rules.
06:01 >> The first 120 miles were pretty good, but as we left flat ground and
06:07 approached the mountains, things began to get interesting, by which I mean slow.
06:12 >> So right now we're going 50 because I'm at part throttle on flat ground.
06:16 The moment we hit a hill, we're done.
06:18 If I give it throttle, it surges and wants to shut off.
06:22 >> Yeah. >> As if there's very little fuel in
06:24 the bowls, so.
06:25 >> When you throttle back, it cruises.
06:27 >> Yeah.
06:28 >> Breaking down the extreme term.
06:31 We're lounging in the lap of luxury while experiencing a minor difficulty with our
06:36 fuel delivery.
06:36 [MUSIC]
06:42 >> Please don't go disco inferno right now on the hill.
06:45 I know we got a stereo, I know we got air conditioning, I know we're spoiled.
06:49 Come on, baby, up the hill.
06:51 >> Up the hill.
06:52 >> We're getting passed by a motor home.
06:54 [MUSIC]
06:55 [LAUGH]
06:56 [MUSIC]
07:00 >> Thing is surging because it's starved for gas.
07:03 It either needs a fuel pump or the fuel filter is clogged.
07:06 [MUSIC]
07:09 It does have a mechanical fuel pump on it.
07:11 >> It's got two gas tanks and it's got a switching valve here from one tank to
07:15 the other and this is an electric pump, but I don't think it's running.
07:18 Okay, it's on.
07:19 >> Not working.
07:20 Wait, stop.
07:21 Shut it off.
07:23 >> So the fuel's getting to here.
07:25 There's a chance this filter's clogged.
07:26 [MUSIC]
07:30 That looks clogged.
07:32 That's the problem.
07:32 [MUSIC]
07:35 >> We need a piece of hose, bypass it.
07:37 >> Yep.
07:38 >> That'll work.
07:41 >> That'll work.
07:42 >> We're stealing a piece of vacuum line from the engine.
07:45 Now I need to find a bolt to punch into the vacuum line to keep from having
07:48 a vacuum leak.
07:49 [MUSIC]
07:52 >> Is there any random bolts laying in the cockpit of the Camaro?
07:54 [MUSIC]
08:01 There we go.
08:01 [MUSIC]
08:05 >> Got it.
08:06 >> One man's misery is another man's fortune.
08:09 >> You can generally fix your car with junk lying on the ground.
08:11 >> Look, his car caught on fire and his watch caught on fire.
08:15 I got a watch and a bolt.
08:16 This will buff out.
08:18 [MUSIC]
08:20 You give to the highway and the highway will give back to you every time.
08:23 [MUSIC]
08:27 So much wind.
08:28 [MUSIC]
08:30 Should I leave this at the side of the road for the next guy?
08:33 >> He might need it.
08:35 >> He might not.
08:36 >> Maybe he needs three inches of fuel line and that doubles as three inches of
08:40 fuel line. >> He might, I'll leave the three inches
08:41 of fuel line.
08:42 Air conditioning.
08:44 Go all out.
08:44 [MUSIC]
08:52 We got the ramp truck up and running again and
08:54 rolled down into Baker, California and wrenched on the thing a little bit more.
08:59 And of course, made the stop at Alien Fresh Jerky because you have to,
09:02 you're in Baker.
09:04 But once we hit the road again,
09:05 it's pretty obvious this junk was not actually fixed.
09:09 [MUSIC]
09:11 It wasn't clogging up this fuel filter and so
09:14 now we're narrowing it down to the fuel pump.
09:16 We had a spare, we're throwing it on.
09:19 In theory, I'll be running like 200 plus miles an hour tomorrow or in two days.
09:23 [MUSIC]
09:24 Not if we don't get there.
09:25 [MUSIC]
09:27 You get comfortable working at the side of the highway with semis whizzing past,
09:31 because you know, none of those guys have been awake for 48 hours.
09:35 >> What semis?
09:36 [MUSIC]
09:39 >> After putting in the new fuel pump, I went under the truck to check for
09:42 other leaks from both gas tanks.
09:44 And that's when a piece of rust fell in my eye.
09:47 It was far from the first time that's happened, so
09:49 at first I just brushed it off.
09:50 But as we hit the road, my eye continued to get worse.
09:53 And that meant our next stop was to our local urgent care.
09:56 [BLANK_AUDIO]
10:02 >> I found another fuel leak under the truck in the middle of nowhere.
10:05 I learned my lesson, glasses.
10:08 Because for the past three hours, Finnegan has been down the street.
10:11 He's gotta stay here in Vegas and get his eye dealt with first thing in the morning.
10:15 While I cannonball all the way up to, I think,
10:17 Ely, Nevada, get a room so that I can get to Bonneville in the morning.
10:21 And none of that's gonna happen until I fix this filter,
10:24 which is going to gush at least a gallon of gas in my face.
10:27 [SOUND]
10:29 Okay, that's plugging that one, letting that one leak out and not splash in my eye.
10:34 [SOUND] Yes, cars, so much fun.
10:39 Wow, this is way bigger than 3/8, this is gonna be bad.
10:43 All right, we've slowed that to only a minor environmental hazard.
10:48 Wish Finnegan was here, and I could at least make him do this.
10:52 [MUSIC]
10:55 Maybe I should just run over to the emergency room with Finnegan and
10:58 check in, have a nice night's sleep there.
11:00 Yeah, it just died.
11:02 Headlight's not working, key not working.
11:08 This is another new problem I'm not sure that we've mentioned yet.
11:11 The ramp truck has a random electrical problem where it just has no power at all
11:16 for no reason, and then it magically comes back for no reason.
11:21 I'm done.
11:21 I eventually figured out that the electrical gremlins were caused by
11:27 all of the main power wires on the starter being just flat out loose.
11:31 Once that was fixed, the ramp truck was running stronger than ever, and
11:34 I still had four hours ahead of me.
11:36 [MUSIC]
11:44 The Turks have shown up here today, who are my partners on the race car.
11:47 They brought our actual race trailer with us, so
11:50 that we have all our equipment and everything.
11:52 I slept three hours.
11:53 How about you?
11:54 We got four.
11:54 Ramp truck's good.
11:55 It's really, really cool.
11:56 It's really, really good.
11:59 [MUSIC]
12:03 Today is Friday.
12:04 There have been people out on the salt flats for a couple weeks,
12:07 dragging all the courses, making them smooth.
12:09 It's entirely run by volunteers.
12:12 And the other thing that they do is set up the pits and the tech inspection lanes.
12:16 We're pretty far behind schedule, but I hope we can get there in time to set up
12:19 our pits and get the car safety inspected.
12:22 [MUSIC]
12:28 You don't really know how fast you're going,
12:30 because if you see here, you've got no perspective.
12:33 There's no guardrails, there's no trees, no nothing like that.
12:36 You know you're going fast because the car is screaming, and
12:39 you look at the tack, and you know mathematically what you're doing.
12:42 But there isn't that sense of speed like there would be if there was a brick wall
12:45 right here, or if you were at an Indy Speedway trying to turn a corner or
12:48 something.
12:49 It is like driving on the moon.
12:51 [MUSIC]
12:54 These guys are doing what people did in the 40s and 50s,
12:57 which is using the old mosquito netting or
12:59 army camouflage leftovers to build their tent.
13:02 [MUSIC]
13:06 At this point, the car still had not fired up for the first time this year, and
13:10 there was a ton of work left to be done.
13:12 But the ramp truck had done good, and Finnegan was finally on route, and
13:17 there was a week of racing ahead of us, in theory.
13:20 [MUSIC]
13:25 >> On behalf of Hot Rod magazine, I would like to introduce
13:29 David Frye-Burger to present the Hot Rod trophy.
13:33 >> [APPLAUSE]
13:35 >> The other thing that has gone on here
13:37 since 1949 is Hot Rod has given a top time trophy, which is for
13:41 the fastest one way pass during speed week.
13:44 The petite and main car has won the top time trophy four years in a row.
13:49 The trophy's down here, you'll see their name on it.
13:51 Last year, they went 423 miles an hour and changed.
13:56 I understand some people are gunning for you, we'll watch it all week.
13:58 Thank you very much, everybody.
13:59 >> [APPLAUSE]
14:02 >> So after seeing three doctors in two
14:04 days, my Terminator eyeball is fine.
14:06 Of the three diagnoses, the one I'm most comfortable with is,
14:10 you had dirt in your eye, it's gone, you're gonna be okay.
14:12 [MUSIC]
14:14 >> We're just going through the car, doing a couple of last minute things,
14:17 nut and bolt checking everything, cuz you don't like junk falling off when you're
14:20 going 240 or 50 miles an hour.
14:22 >> So what are you doing over there?
14:25 >> A little bit of a leak.
14:26 >> I put a fresh set of plugs in there.
14:28 We're mere minutes away from firing it, which in road kill time is mere hours.
14:33 >> I'm calculating what kind of gear we wanna put in.
14:37 It's a quick change rear end, so we can pretty much pick whatever we wanna pick.
14:40 I think I'm gonna put a 280 in.
14:43 There we go, that's what I was looking for.
14:44 That's like a 218 right there.
14:46 Look at the giant difference between the size.
14:48 The small one goes on the bottom.
14:49 [MUSIC]
14:53 There you go.
14:54 That's it.
14:57 I'm looking here at what classes we're gonna run.
15:00 This is the soft one, obviously.
15:01 A classic blown gas coupe, 207 miles an hour.
15:05 When Finnegan leaves so that he doesn't freak out too much in a wince,
15:08 because this is completely Mickey Mouse, we can unplug one cylinder and
15:12 run this, and unplug another cylinder and run that.
15:14 >> You son of a [BLEEP]!
15:15 >> [LAUGH]
15:17 >> Or not.
15:18 >> No, we're not.
15:20 I worked really hard on this engine.
15:22 >> I know, but we're gonna use most of it.
15:23 >> Can we just start this thing?
15:26 [MUSIC]
15:34 >> Can we get this further off?
15:36 >> Yeah, this is what happens when you don't get the car fully prepped before you
15:39 leave to go to the races.
15:40 You find things out like- >> Yeah, see this.
15:42 >> There's no fuel coming out of one fuel line.
15:45 >> Is this fitting new?
15:46 Like not used on the dyno?
15:48 >> I didn't plumb it, I don't know.
15:49 >> Plug in the float bowl.
15:53 That was a Mike Finnegan prevents the engine from blowing up on the first pass
15:56 catch right there.
15:58 >> I get to stay.
15:59 >> The dyno shop put the plug in the float bowl to keep dirt out of it.
16:03 And of course, we didn't look for it when we attached both fuel lines.
16:07 >> Starting the car up for the first time, this is a big moment right here.
16:10 Car has sat for a couple of years, built an engine in three days.
16:14 Let's go racing.
16:16 >> Cranking first.
16:17 [SOUND] No oil pressure yet.
16:23 [SOUND]
16:33 Gauge works.
16:43 [MUSIC]
16:45 >> The safety inspection at Bonneville is pretty hardcore because when stuff goes
16:49 wrong at 200 plus miles an hour, it goes way wrong.
16:53 That means that you've got to have a fire system on board, and a parachute, and
16:56 all the regular lap belts and everything.
16:58 The safety inspectors will usually point out a couple small things on the car, but
17:02 we sailed right through with flying colors.
17:04 They closed the actual paperwork part of tech two minutes before we were done.
17:09 So we won't be racing till they open up 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.
17:12 But the good news is the car will be completely prepped by the morning and
17:15 we can drink beer now.
17:16 So really, it's all good.
17:18 This is why it's speed week.
17:20 >> Yeah, not speed day.
17:22 >> Right.
17:22 [LAUGH]
17:24 [MUSIC]
17:28 Now it's Sunday morning, our third day on the salt.
17:32 We finally got our act together ready to race.
17:34 Even though it's the fastest place on Earth, things happen kind of slow.
17:37 We are going to roll up, put in the spec gasoline for
17:41 the class that we're running, and then hit the starting line.
17:43 And we should get a run in early this morning before it turns to be 100 degrees.
17:46 [MUSIC]
17:49 The current record in the class I'm racing right now is 207 miles an hour.
17:52 So I'm calculating at what RPM I'll exceed that.
17:56 In fourth gear, I need to hit 6,500 RPM.
18:00 And this one is 230.
18:03 [MUSIC]
18:05 >> This is the worst part of racing, the waiting.
18:07 The tweaker in me wants to take the hood off the car right now and
18:10 give everything one more look.
18:12 I don't wanna do that though, cuz it doesn't mean anything.
18:14 But standing around, I have nothing to do, so I'll keep pacing.
18:17 >> When you get to the line,
18:20 you have to make sure that you are strapped in your car well in advance.
18:24 >> Fire pit is out.
18:25 [MUSIC]
18:27 Parachute, fire, fire, off.
18:30 >> You snap up that window net, and
18:32 you and the Bonneville salt flats are all alone, ready for speed.
18:36 >> Fire it up.
18:37 [MUSIC]
18:47 >> The rear gears are in upside down.
19:07 Our first run was a complete waste of time.
19:09 I didn't even make it out of second gear before I realized something was way,
19:13 way wrong.
19:15 We had put the gears in upside down in the quick change.
19:18 Big gear is supposed to go on the bottom and the little one on the top.
19:21 [SOUND]
19:22 So small one goes on the bottom.
19:24 However, last year when we ran the car, two years ago,
19:26 when we blew up the motor and we set that record on two cylinders,
19:29 we need a seven to one gear ratio.
19:31 So we flipped the gears.
19:33 That was an attempt at like a six to one gear ratio,
19:36 which doesn't work very well.
19:37 So now we are correcting that and
19:39 giving me the ability to once again run 200 plus miles an hour.
19:42 [MUSIC]
19:52 [SOUND]
20:02 [MUSIC]
20:12 Meanwhile, we're on course one, 462 car, he's flying.
20:18 [MUSIC]
20:28 [SOUND]
20:38 The quarter is 194, 775.
20:44 [SOUND]
20:54 Shooters out as he passes the three at 200.599.
21:04 It was a mess.
21:06 I couldn't get on it early.
21:07 I short shifted it to try and make it hook up.
21:10 But it's just doing this the whole way.
21:12 [MUSIC]
21:15 [SOUND]
21:21 Since our last run, the engine has developed a pretty good misfire.
21:25 Bad enough that we're pulling valve covers and
21:28 now we're going through the ignition system.
21:30 That ignition box had been in the car for six years or more.
21:33 So it's not surprising that it finally died.
21:35 The new ignition system seemed to fix the misfire.
21:38 We had one more run left in the day.
21:40 [MUSIC]
21:50 [SOUND]
21:55 Shoots out at 191,658.
21:58 Makes the speed of 199.840.
22:01 That is a lot like a racetrack, except more like a sandbox.
22:05 There is no traction to be had whatsoever.
22:09 Hopefully we'll be able to hit our number tomorrow, cuz we did not today.
22:12 Best we could run is 200 even when we needed to go 207 to qualify for
22:17 that record.
22:18 [MUSIC]
22:23 We didn't wanna drive around the ramp truck on the salt because the salt will
22:26 destroy this thing.
22:26 It'll rust immediately.
22:28 So we've been borrowing our neighbor's truck for the past two days.
22:30 We're in a pretty good time crunch right now, so
22:32 we can't really wait around to borrow somebody's truck.
22:34 So we're making a push bar for the front of our truck out of an old tire and
22:40 some plywood and some ratchet straps.
22:42 So now we're one step closer to being self-sufficient.
22:45 [MUSIC]
22:48 This is one of the few types of racing where making your car heavier can be
22:51 better.
22:52 We're looking for traction, and so we managed to mooch 300 pounds of lead
22:57 from our buddy, Lee Sicilio.
22:59 I am affixing it to the car here.
23:00 Some things have changed since yesterday.
23:03 One, we're no longer running on course number one because the traction there
23:07 was so hideously bad that we just weren't getting anywhere.
23:10 And a lot of racers agreed with that, so we're on course two.
23:13 Second thing is we found that there's another racer in our same class
23:16 who has qualified for this record this morning at 225 miles an hour.
23:20 Not too big of a deal.
23:21 Here's how the records work at Bonneville.
23:23 You run a qualifying pass right now that exceeds the existing record, and
23:27 in the morning you run a backup pass.
23:29 The average of those two passes needs to exceed the existing record.
23:33 So even if we run slower than the 225 that the other guy ran,
23:36 we still have potential to beat that record in the morning.
23:39 But we're not gonna do that.
23:41 We're gonna go out here and lay down a number right now.
23:43 [MUSIC]
23:53 This is car 462 over on course two.
24:04 >> So while racing, this is the David Freeburger, Tonya and Keith Kirk.
24:09 >> Okay.
24:10 [SOUND]
24:16 >> Car 462 has gone through two at 184.4.
24:20 [SOUND]
24:24 >> Three quarter at 200.3.
24:26 [SOUND]
24:31 >> 206.593 by three.
24:34 [SOUND]
24:41 >> 217,640 mile four.
24:44 >> I think that did it.
24:47 Almost 8,000 RPM.
24:50 >> I don't understand how it can be that wide open for that long and
24:53 only go that fast.
24:54 The tach said I was almost at 8,000 RPM,
24:57 which should have been 245 miles an hour, 250.
25:01 >> Tires slipped. >> It's gotta be.
25:02 >> Finally, we had to get into a little bit of strategy,
25:05 because we qualified for this record at 217 miles an hour.
25:08 But the Trans Am had also run that morning and
25:11 gone eight miles an hour faster than us.
25:13 That thing doesn't even have an air dam on it.
25:14 It's weird.
25:17 Stock hood too.
25:18 Right now we're in impound so that if we do choose to, we can stay in here and
25:22 run for the record in the morning.
25:23 But we're gonna work on the car a little bit and
25:25 see if we can find something we don't like about it where we know we can go faster.
25:29 And if that's the case, we're gonna run back out and make another pass today.
25:32 If you leave impound without backing up your run,
25:35 then you've thrown away that record attempt.
25:37 We made two changes.
25:40 Gear in the back of the car, new blower pulley up front.
25:43 But our blower pulley and our belt's not quite fitting together.
25:46 And we're trying to jam this thing together and
25:48 get to the starting line real quick.
25:50 By the time we had sorted out what we wanted to do to the car mechanically,
25:53 we'd spent enough time in impound that we weren't gonna get another run.
25:56 And we decided to just stick it out and try and make our record return run the next
26:00 morning.
26:01 [MUSIC]
26:11 [SOUND]
26:21 Every morning at the Bonneville Salt Flats,
26:32 the first thing that happens is record return runs.
26:35 All of the cars that qualified for a record the previous day line up and
26:39 parade out to the starting line and
26:41 get their very first chance at running down the track in the morning.
26:44 [MUSIC]
26:45 It's 7 AM, sun just peeking over the horizon.
26:49 And this is gonna be our best opportunity all week to put down a good number in
26:53 this class because they moved the track last night, so we have fresh salt.
26:56 We've put more boost in the car, we have less gear.
27:00 Cross your fingers.
27:01 [MUSIC]
27:11 Our 462 now underway on the first one.
27:28 Current temperature is 82 degrees outside.
27:31 Humidity is relatively high here at 24% this morning.
27:34 [MUSIC]
27:44 Came through two at 170, 649.
27:49 We're in the quarter at 188, 417.
27:53 [MUSIC]
27:57 By three, 190, 924.
28:01 [MUSIC]
28:10 By four, she's out, 185, 677.
28:15 >> Motor's history.
28:18 >> The bottom line is we stepped up the boost on this thing, I leaned it out, and
28:22 it blew up.
28:24 I should have smelled the oil, I should have felt the power going away.
28:27 It was just all over.
28:30 >> It would be easy to be depressed about what happened.
28:32 All that hard work, all that money going into a car, and
28:35 then we don't get a record.
28:36 But let's be honest here, David just went 217 miles an hour in
28:42 a super old Camaro with an engine that we built in three days.
28:46 >> One year, we set five records in five days in five different classes.
28:51 I have never left Speed Week without setting a record.
28:55 That is until now.
28:57 Do you know what?
28:58 I blame roadkill.
28:59 [MUSIC]
29:03 >> I started working on it, it only went 200.
29:04 It's kinda messed up.
29:06 >> You're the guy from Roadkill, aren't you?
29:08 >> [LAUGH] Yeah, it's weird.
29:12 >> I showed my mom the video of the van and all, and my mom heard the bad word, and
29:16 she's like, no more watching.
29:18 >> Back to your old work.
29:19 >> Yeah, that's what my mom said.
29:20 >> That wasn't me, that was the other guy.
29:22 >> Wait, who?
29:22 >> That guy over there, right there.
29:25 >> Yeah, my mom's mad at him, not you.
29:27 >> [LAUGH] >> On an episode, they took a van and
29:31 a wagon and just took them out to the desert and just bashed them.
29:34 >> Yeah, who would care as a Prius?
29:36 >> Bad, bad, N-O, I hate Priuses.
29:40 I wanna stick old school with gas.
29:42 >> My mom's not here, she's at Guns of Automotive, she hates us, David.
29:45 >> [LAUGH]
