00:00 Hi there, welcome to the week ahead forecast from the Met Office. It's been a weekend of
00:05 significant contrasts up and down the country. We had the warm weather in the south but further
00:10 north we had a wind, we had cloud and we had a lot of rainfall. For Scotland in particular
00:16 this rainfall radar sequence just shows the extent of the heavy and persistent rainfall
00:22 throughout Saturday. The brighter colours show the areas experiencing heavier rainfall
00:26 on the rainfall radar here. This is Saturday morning and it was just widespread across
00:31 Scotland but particularly focused if I play this forward across central and western parts
00:37 of Scotland, especially around Argyll and Bute, Tayside, Perth and there are still severe
00:43 flood warnings in force for Perth and Aviemore at the time of recording. Inevitably all of
00:48 that rainfall we saw 75mm across a wide area of Scotland even at lower levels and 100-150mm
00:55 even more than that in some higher parts of western and central Scotland. Well that led
01:00 to significant flooding from rivers as well as landslides and transport disruption. Now
01:07 fortunately at the time of recording that rainfall has eased off but there is further
01:10 rain on the way. On Monday night as another set of weather fronts return to Scotland that
01:17 affecting much of western Scotland in particular during Tuesday. Not as much as we saw at the
01:21 weekend but we really don't need any more rain at this point. Further south it stays
01:26 dry with weather fronts avoiding the south for the time being although as the flow turns
01:31 more to a west-southwesterly direction we will see fairly extensive low cloud, mist
01:36 and fog across parts of Wales, south-west and southern England first thing Tuesday perhaps
01:41 into the Midlands as well. That will take some time to retreat back to the coast but
01:45 it will mostly retreat back to the coast and once that happens it's a bright day for England
01:49 and Wales although there will be some showery rain pushing into northern England and north
01:52 Wales by the end of the afternoon. But you can see how that rain sets in across much
01:56 of northern and western Scotland once again the brighter colours again indicating some
02:00 heavier spells of wet weather. 25-50mm of rain across western Scotland could cause further
02:06 issues with flooding and transport disruption so a yellow warning in force. It also turns
02:11 wetter across northern Ireland through the day and the breeze will pick up as well. But
02:15 again it's a mild day for many away from the far north of Scotland. A warm day once more
02:20 across the south not quite as warm as Sunday and Monday because of the extent of the low
02:25 cloud first thing. I think the highest temperature is East Anglia 23-24C. Then into Tuesday night
02:33 and Wednesday you can see the temperature contrast across the UK. There's colder air
02:36 is pushing into Scotland behind a couple of weather fronts. Another warm front pushes
02:40 in from the south-west and joins forces with this cold front and both of them become more
02:45 active into Wednesday and start to affect more southern parts of the UK. Initially it's
02:49 Wales the Midlands into East Anglia where we'll see spells of rain through the early
02:54 hours of Wednesday and continuing into the afternoon and the brighter colours once again
02:59 indicating the potential for heavier rain there. Especially across parts of Wales where
03:03 there's the risk of 30-50mm of rain in places particularly around north and west Wales.
03:10 Across the south a dry bright start in many places but we'll see some thickening cloud
03:15 and outbreaks of rain push in here by the end of the afternoon. Meanwhile it's a brighter
03:19 day for northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Some glimmers of sunlight coming
03:24 through but for the northern half of Scotland we'll see quite a few showers arrive here
03:29 and a strong wind with the risk of gales for the far north and that's going to make it
03:33 feel on the cold side. Now those gales push through for Thursday. A brighter day for many
03:40 but some decent spells of sunshine actually and the rain in the south clears away as well
03:43 although we keep some areas of cloud particularly towards the south west. We'll also keep some
03:47 cloud for Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland but most of the showers confined to
03:52 the far north and north west of Scotland along with a strong wind and for many it's a fine
03:57 day on Thursday, one of the better days this week I should say across much of the country.
04:02 The best of the sunshine in central areas but it's going to feel a bit colder compared
04:06 with Wednesday because the milder air will have pushed south but it does return on this
04:11 warm front as this pushes north we've got a cold front diving south and the two begin
04:16 to meet. Two separate branches of the jet stream driving these features, one low to
04:20 the south west, one low to the north east and all in all plenty of weather to talk about
04:25 for Friday. We start the day with a lot of rain across England and Wales, some uncertainties
04:29 on the north south distribution of the heavier spells of wet weather but it's certainly going
04:33 to be a wet day in many places particularly for Wales, northern England, parts of the
04:37 Midlands. Perhaps drier towards the south east where it will be a bit warmer once again
04:41 albeit with a strong wind coming up from the south west and for Scotland, northern Ireland
04:46 and northern England a completely different air mass with brighter skies but with quite
04:51 a few blustery showers and some flakes of snow over the tops of the Scottish mountains.
04:56 Now the wet weather towards central and south western areas will be accompanied by a strengthening
05:00 wind as we go through Friday night as this low pulls away, tightly packed ice bars and
05:06 the risk of gales for south western parts of England as we end Friday although again
05:11 some uncertainty on the distribution of the fronts and the low pressure systems by this
05:14 stage. The jet stream pushes all of this out of the way for the start of the weekend. We've
05:18 got high pressure building in from the west but still some instability across northern
05:24 parts of the country in particular so quite a few showers to come on Saturday. They ease
05:27 away on Sunday as high pressure builds in but the theme for this weekend whether you've
05:31 got the showers or whether you've got some sunny spells coming through is it's going
05:35 to be much colder certainly compared with the previous weekend. You can see the colours
05:40 on the chart changing, the warmth flushed away into Europe and this cold air coming
05:45 in from the north. That means some of those showers will be of a wintry nature over the
05:50 Scottish mountains and there will be fairly widespread frosts across much of the UK especially
05:55 the north by Sunday morning and Monday morning. A very different feel for many parts of the
06:00 UK although thankfully a drier weekend to come for Scotland.
