Vitalant Summer Drive to Save Lives Volkswagen Raffle!
Join AZ-TV7 and Vitalant on Wednesday, Oct. 11, when we give away a 2023 VW Taos S donated by our Valley Volkswagen dealers to one lucky blood donor or blood drive coordinator! Ten names have been drawn from among the 52,420 donors and 409 goal-making coordinators who supported Vitalant May 26 – Sept. 7, building summer blood supplies for hospital patients. During our exciting Deal or No Deal game show event, each of our finalists will be awarded a case with a key – only one of which will start the engine of a Volkswagen in our parking lot. 00:06 Well, this Wednesday we are finally naming a winner and Sue Thu is here to talk
00:11 about this exciting event. Sue, I'm gonna be there on Wednesday and I cannot wait.
00:17 So this is my first time. Tell me a little bit about the event. Oh, it's gonna
00:21 be so exciting. We had over 52,000 people donate blood this summer. Wow. And we've
00:27 drawn 10 finalists for the grand prize ceremony and each of those 10 finalists
00:31 will come together on Wednesday at Vitalant's headquarters and we're going
00:35 to give away the car actually in a deal-or-no-deal game show. So each of
00:40 these 10 finalists will end up randomly selecting a numbered case and inside
00:45 that case will be a symbol and there'll be 10 Volkswagens in our parking lot and
00:51 so the case will determine which car each finalist tries their luck on. We'll
00:56 count it down. 3, 2, 1 and whosoever engine starts is the winner of a 2023
01:02 Volkswagen Taos. Oh my gosh, that sounds so fun. So we were just joking earlier
01:08 that you put me and Brad in the top 10, right? Well, absolutely. No, this is only
01:13 from people who have given blood over this summer because this was done from
01:18 the beginning of May until just last month. It's actually, it started
01:25 on May 26th because we wanted to incorporate the Memorial Day holiday.
01:28 That's a tough time for blood supplies. We went through the Labor Day holiday
01:33 week, September 7th, and out of that we drew nine blood donors and one of the
01:38 10 finalists will be a goal-making blood drive coordinator because, you know, it's
01:42 so important to host blood drives during the summer. Donations drop so
01:47 dramatically that we wanted to reward all the blood drive coordinators by, who
01:52 achieve their blood drive goals, by drawing one of the finalists from there.
01:56 We have a teen donor finalist, we have all these different categories, we have
02:00 special event finalists from people who gave during holiday weeks at our special
02:05 blood drives, but they're all remarkable people and you can actually read about
02:10 them by going to vitalent.org/vwfinalists. I love that. Okay, so why do blood
02:16 donations drop so much during the summer? Why is that? Well, you know, it's such a
02:22 challenging time. You might be really surprised to learn that one out of every
02:26 six blood donations comes from a teen donor, so you can imagine the impact that
02:31 that makes when the schools go on their summer recess. So we lose most of those
02:36 college and high school blood drives, but on top of that we've got three extended
02:41 holiday weekends where people are leaving town going on vacation. There's
02:45 more accidents on the roads and highways and a greater potential for the need for
02:49 blood, but just so many people on vacation trying to get out of the heat
02:53 in Arizona, so we get hit from every direction where blood usage may go up
03:00 but donations dramatically drop. I gotcha, and so this is your 17th year and Valley
03:06 Volkswagen car, they all kind of come together to do this car giveaway, so this
03:11 is so exciting. Can anyone come out to the event to attend? Absolutely, anybody
03:16 who wants to come to our grand prize ceremony, come on out. It's at Vitalit
03:20 headquarters in Tempe. That's 1524 West 14th Street in Tempe. We're gonna have a
03:26 very exciting event. We've got a blood recipient, a woman named Kim who
03:32 survived leukemia with the help of blood donors. We'll have all the ten finalists,
03:36 we'll have our Deal or No Deal game show, and we'll have AZTV there also doing
03:41 live segments from the event and a post event that will be airing the entire
03:47 ceremony on your Facebook page. Absolutely, yes. Well I personally will be
03:52 there. I'm so excited. I was just saying I haven't been out to one of these
03:56 events quite yet, so this sounds like a blast. I cannot wait to kind of feel the
04:01 energy and the excitement of everybody like going in to start the engine to see
