Europe's least powerful BMW X2 has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engine with 148 hp and 265 lb-ft.
Shortly after North American specifications for the 2024 BMW X2 were announced, we now have comprehensive details on the models European customers can get. As expected, they will have more options than US buyers; especially the new all-electric iX2 xDrive30 option.
Three combustion engines will be offered in Europe, consisting of two gasoline and one diesel engine. The petrol range starts with the X2 sDrive20i, equipped with a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine that supports the new dual-injection system and works in conjunction with a 48-volt mild hybrid system.
This 48-volt mild-hybrid system serves as the SUV's starter generator and features a small electric motor integrated into the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It produces 19 hp and 41 lb-ft (55 Nm) of torque on its own, contributing to a total of 168 hp and 206 lb-ft (280 Nm) of torque. The X2 sDrive20i can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.3 seconds and is as fuel efficient as you'd expect; It consumes 6.0-6.5 liters of fuel per 100 km, or 47.1 mpg - 43.5 mpg in the combined cycle.
European consumers are also offered a diesel version in the form of the X2 sDrive18d. This model is equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine enhanced with new low-friction pistons, graphite coating on the piston skirts and an active oil separator. This model produces 148 hp and 360 Nm (265 lb-ft) of torque, allowing the X2 sDrive18d to reach 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds. This version sips between 5.1-5.5 liters per 100 km, or 55.4 mpg to 51.4 mpg on the WLTP cycle. Like the sDrive20i, the sDrive18d is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch Steptronic transmission that automatically shifts to P when the engine is switched off.
Just like in the USA, the top of the new BMW X2 range in Europe is the X2 M35i xDrive. This model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 296 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque in European specification. The observant among you may notice that the US-spec X2 M35i has 312 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm), so European customers will have to make do with a little less.
However, the Euro model can still reach 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and has a revised seven-speed Steptronic transmission. It is also equipped with a mechanical limited-slip differential at the front and comes with the BMW superb xDrive all-wheel drive system as standard.
