00:00 In Australia, voters have said no to a proposal by the Prime Minister to give First Nations
00:04 people a voice in Parliament.
00:06 On Saturday, Australia held a referendum on the initiative, which foresaw the creation
00:10 of a body dubbed the Voice, whose elected members would be from Indigenous communities,
00:15 to provide independent advice to the Executive and to Parliament on issues relating to First
00:20 Nations people.
00:22 Prime Minister Anthony Albanese regretted the results and said this is not the end of
00:25 the road and certainly not the end of his administration's efforts to bring people
00:29 together as he had promised on his electoral campaign.
00:33 The no got 58.4% of the votes, whereas 42% of the people voted yes.
00:45 Supporters of Australia's Indigenous rights referendum react after the vote for the bid
00:49 to recognise Australia's First Nations peoples failed.
00:54 This feels pretty awful because I think it's a reflection of who we are as a country really.
01:01 But I am very, very disappointed.
01:03 I'm very sad and I'm tired.
01:06 So tomorrow will be another day and we fight on.
01:12 I'm an optimist.
01:14 Regardless of the result, Aboriginal people have been here for 60,000 years and we will
01:20 continue to be here and nothing changes for us.
01:25 And it's just, like I said to the gentleman over there, visceral voters will vote no because
01:33 they fear change.
