00:30 By convention, other members of the family have to follow suit.
00:34 However, the Prince of Wales has sometimes crossed this line and has been accused of
00:39 meddling in political matters.
00:41 According to extracts from Alastair Campbell's diary, published in The Guardian in 2011,
00:50 former Prime Minister Tony Blair was incredibly frustrated with Prince Charles' behaviour during
00:55 his time in Downing Street.
00:57 Mr Blair felt the heir to the throne overstepped the constitutional boundaries previously observed
01:06 by the royal family by trying to influence government policy, Mr Campbell claimed.
01:11 The ex-Labour leader was said to have become exasperated by the prince's interventions over
01:19 the ban on foxhunting, the foot-and-mouth crisis, GM foods, and the abolition of hereditary peers.
01:26 Mr Blair's concerns grew so great that he even raised them with the queen,
01:34 Mr Campbell suggested in his diaries.
01:36 In an entry about a meeting between Mr Blair and the prince, Mr Campbell wrote,
01:46 "While publicly we stayed supportive, Tony Blair said Charles had to understand there
01:50 were limits to the extent to which they could play politics with him.
01:54 He said it was 90 minutes of pretty hard talk, not just about hunting.
02:01 In Power and Responsibility. The Alastair Campbell Diaries, Volume 3, the former spin doctor also
02:09 recalled a string of incidents in which the prince strayed into politics, to Mr Blair's apparent
02:14 irritation.
02:15 He claimed that in 2001, the former prime minister was angered by the prince's "deeply
02:24 unhelpful interventions over the foot-and-mouth crisis."
02:27 Writing on March 16 that year, Mr Campbell said,
02:34 "Tony Blair said he knew exactly what he was doing."
02:40 He also asked whether Charles had ever considered help when 6,000 jobs were lost at Corus,
02:46 the steel manufacturer.
02:47 He said this was all about "screwing us" and trying to get up the message that we
02:55 weren't generous enough to the farmers.
02:57 In another episode in 1999, Mr Blair allegedly resented a letter from the prince which
03:06 challenged plans to ban fox hunting and declared that hereditary peers,
03:11 most of whom were abolished by labor that year, had much to offer.
03:14 Mr Campbell wrote that the prince had, menacingly, said,
03:22 "We don't really want to be like the continentals, now do we?"
03:25 The same year, following a newspaper article by the prince condemning GM Foods,
03:31 Mr Blair apparently raised his concerns with the queen.
03:34 On June 1, 1999, Mr Campbell wrote,
03:42 "Tony Blair saw the Queen and seemingly didn't push too hard re. Charles but he was very p*****ed off,
03:50 especially once it became clear that they, Charles's officials,
03:54 were emphasizing he had thought through the consequences."
04:00 Immediately after the publication of Mr Campbell's diary entries,
04:04 the former prime minister confirmed that he did voice critical remarks of the prince in private.
04:09 However, he said he found their discussions immensely helpful.
04:17 He wrote, "A prime minister may sound off from time to time,
04:21 especially when sensitive discussions with members of the royal family leak into the papers,
04:26 in the middle of some high-profile issue."
04:28 However, I want to make it clear that I always found my discussions and
04:36 correspondence with Prince Charles immensely helpful.
04:39 I thought he had a perfect right to raise questions and did so in a way
04:46 that was both informative and insightful.
04:48 So I welcomed his contributions, and have no doubt he will continue to raise issues
04:56 with the new government as he is entitled and indeed it is his job to do,
05:00 and that they will also find it helpful.
05:02 Mr Blair returned to the limelight earlier this week, as he passionately condemned
05:10 US President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan.
05:14 In his first public comments on the crisis since the Afghan government collapsed last weekend,
05:24 Mr Blair criticized the US motives for the withdrawal as "embassylic"
05:28 and "driven not by grand strategy but by politics."
05:31 He wrote in a wide-ranging article published on his institute's website,
05:40 "The abandonment of Afghanistan and its people is tragic,
05:43 dangerous, unnecessary, not in their interests and not in ours.
05:50 We didn't need to do it. We chose to do it. We did it in obedience to an
05:55 imbecilic political slogan about ending 'the forever wars' as if our engagement
06:00 in 2021 was remotely comparable to our commitment 20 or even 10 years ago."
