Rishi Sunak: Rafah border will open ‘imminently’

  • last year
Rishi Sunak has claimed that the Rafah border, the sole crossing point between Egypt and Gaza will open “imminently”.
The prime minister said: “When this crisis unfolded, one thing we have prioritized consistently is getting the Rafah crossing opening. It's been a feature of all my conversations and I'm very pleased that that will now imminently happen.” Report by Covellm. 00:00 Well in the last 48 hours I've been to three different countries and met six different
00:03 leaders including Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Abbas to discuss the situation
00:09 in Israel and Gaza. This is a region in mourning so first and foremost I wanted to express
00:14 my condolences to all those affected. We've also made good progress on tangible areas
00:20 like ensuring access for humanitarian aid to those who need it. But most importantly
00:24 in a situation like this it's important to intensify dialogue because we all have a shared
00:29 interest in peace and stability in this region. When this crisis unfolded one thing we have
00:34 prioritised consistently is getting the Rafah crossing opening. It's been a feature of all
00:38 my conversations and I'm very pleased that that will now imminently happen. We announced
00:43 an increase in our funding for humanitarian aid into the region and when I met with President
00:48 Sisi earlier today he and I had a good discussion about how the UK can provide practical assistance
00:54 on the ground to ensure the sustainability of that aid through the crossing to the people
00:58 who need it.
