00:02 (speaking in foreign language)
00:13 - And welcome to Fast Talk with Boy.
00:18 (audience cheering)
00:21 (speaking in foreign language)
00:26 - A streaming channel for Facebook and YouTube.
00:29 (speaking in foreign language)
00:33 Welcome to the program.
00:34 (audience cheering)
00:37 This is very special.
00:39 (speaking in foreign language)
00:42 She's a social entrepreneur.
00:44 She's a philanthropist.
00:46 She's a lovely woman, beautiful inside and out.
00:49 (speaking in foreign language)
00:56 Please welcome the one and the only,
00:58 Nanette Medved-Po.
01:00 (audience cheering)
01:04 - Thank you.
01:08 - Thank you for being here.
01:10 Thank you for being here.
01:11 - Okay, sure.
01:12 (speaking in foreign language)
01:13 - Thank you.
01:14 - How are you?
01:16 - I'm well.
01:17 I'm a little bit nervous
01:18 because I didn't realize this was the format of your show.
01:21 So I'm a little bit nervous, but I'm good.
01:24 Thank you.
01:25 (speaking in foreign language)
01:27 I know that you don't do this very often, if at all,
01:31 but you're here to celebrate my birthday with me.
01:34 And I am profoundly grateful.
01:39 (speaking in foreign language)
01:40 - Thank you for having me, boy.
01:41 I'm so glad to join you on your birthday.
01:43 When Jojo Gavinete called me and he said,
01:46 "Can you come for Joy's, for boy's birthday?"
01:48 I said, "Absolutely, I don't care what it is.
01:50 "I'm gonna be there."
01:51 - 23 years since you left the business.
01:54 Is there anything that you miss about show business?
01:58 - It's this, it's the relationships.
02:00 I've had incredible relationships in show business.
02:03 And unfortunately, my world is so different now
02:06 that I don't get to interact
02:07 with these wonderful friends of mine like you.
02:10 So I think I miss that the most.
02:12 - What don't you miss about show business?
02:17 - Oh my goodness.
02:18 (speaking in foreign language)
02:19 (speaking in foreign language)
02:20 Even before there was social media.
02:23 Oh, the fake news was really, you know,
02:25 all the intriga and everything,
02:26 but I don't miss fake news.
02:29 - Okay.
02:30 (speaking in foreign language)
02:33 - Oh my gosh.
02:34 I don't think I could ever have survived if it was today.
02:37 Like I have such respect for celebrities,
02:40 people who remain in the spotlight today,
02:42 because oh my gosh,
02:43 I don't know how you manage the social media.
02:46 It's so scary.
02:47 - We have to cope.
02:49 - And the fans, I mean,
02:50 the distance that you had with your fans before,
02:53 although I can imagine that it's wonderful
02:54 to have that closeness today,
02:56 the distance of the fans allowed you to really appreciate,
02:59 when they come to you, they really appreciate you.
03:02 It's such a positive experience,
03:04 rather than today where it's 24/7
03:06 and you're getting a lot of the junk
03:08 together with the positive stuff.
03:10 So we were super lucky during my time,
03:14 but I have great respect for all the guys doing it now.
03:18 (speaking in foreign language)
03:20 They've been blurred.
03:21 And you said it's a different thing now
03:24 with the life that I have today.
03:26 (speaking in foreign language)
03:27 I mean, a lot of people,
03:28 eavesdropping on this conversation would say,
03:30 (speaking in foreign language)
03:33 I mean, can you give us an idea of how it is like?
03:36 - Oh my gosh.
03:37 It's so busy.
03:39 (speaking in foreign language)
03:40 It's very different.
03:42 Equally fulfilling, very busy,
03:46 just like when you're in show business.
03:48 I do much more traveling now, in my life now,
03:52 than I did when I was in show business.
03:54 But I think we're all doing important things,
03:56 whether you're in show business or you're not,
03:58 you're all kind of working on an important mission.
04:00 So it's not that much different.
04:02 - We have roles to play.
04:02 - We have roles to play.
04:03 - Did it come to a point when you started to look at it
04:07 from a very serious point of view?
04:09 What is my process?
04:10 How do I choose my roles?
04:12 Not yet done, I'm not talking about that yet, okay?
04:15 - Did you get into that point?
04:16 - No, I didn't.
04:17 I wish I had.
04:19 I think my process was very clear cut.
04:23 What I said was, I just realized at some point that,
04:27 you know, Filipino fans are amazing.
04:29 They look up to the artists and really try to,
04:34 as a model, as a role model.
04:38 And I didn't realize I was a role model
04:40 until much later in my career.
04:43 And when I found out that I was a role model,
04:46 that's when everything changed.
04:48 And I said, "I wait, I need to be much more careful
04:50 about the roles I choose.
04:52 I need to be much more careful about what I say in public,
04:55 what I wear."
04:56 You know, I became very conscious of the example
05:01 I was giving to the public.
05:03 - When did that happen?
05:04 - It started to happen a little bit before "Darna,"
05:08 but it's solidified in "Darna."
05:10 Because I remember I was on a float.
05:14 I think it was going down Rojas Boulevard
05:17 and I was on a float.
05:19 And I was looking down and you had mga lola,
05:23 you had mga apo.
05:25 - And kids, yeah.
05:26 - Yes, they were all there and they were looking up
05:29 and they couldn't, I think, separate me from the character.
05:34 And therefore I had to be very conscious of how I behave,
05:38 not only to protect the "Darna" image,
05:43 but also to protect what they thought was,
05:46 "How do you behave in the world?"
05:48 And I wanted to be careful that I was modeling
05:50 the behavior I want to see in the world,
05:53 rather than talk about things that were very frivolous.
05:56 So even to this day, I'm very careful about the messaging
06:01 I put out in the world.
06:02 I think that's super important.
06:04 - Up until now, do you get people
06:08 saying, "Are you Darna?"
06:11 - Yeah, yes, but I mean, they'd have to be very old
06:15 to say that.
06:16 Okay, sorry, that's our general, I'm sorry.
06:18 (laughing)
06:20 Okay, I'm putting us down.
06:21 Oh, ouch.
06:22 Okay, no, no.
06:23 - Do you practice saying "Darna?"
06:26 - No, clearly not enough
06:27 because everybody thinks that's so funny.
06:29 I don't know how.
06:30 - My accent.
06:31 - Did I say it with an accent?
06:32 - Bamb, can you help us?
06:33 - I said it with an accent?
06:34 - Yes, uh-uh.
06:34 Darna! - Okay, come on.
06:36 - Bambam, can you just make us--
06:38 - Okay. - He does it very well.
06:40 - Darna!
06:40 - Oh!
06:41 (laughing)
06:43 It's not the way I would say it.
06:45 - It's so cute.
06:46 - Okay.
06:47 - He remembers everything about it.
06:49 - Oh, that's so sweet.
06:50 - He remembers everything about it.
06:51 Is there any other important movie
06:53 that you remember having done?
06:55 - I don't know that it's important,
07:00 but it was certainly one of the more memorable movies,
07:04 and I so enjoyed making it.
07:06 So my first movie with Fernando Poe,
07:09 I subsequently did two more movies with him,
07:13 but I loved my time.
07:16 Any time I'm spending with FBJ is just golden.
07:19 I love the man.
07:21 - Bucket man.
07:22 - He is, it's kind of the golden age of cinema.
07:27 He was like the last, right?
07:29 So he was a complete gentleman,
07:33 larger than life personality,
07:35 just really amazing.
07:40 And when I tried to retire from show business,
07:43 I remember I was in Hong Kong and he called me
07:45 and he said, "You have to come back
07:47 "and shoot another film with me.
07:49 "I promise it'll be your last movie."
07:52 And so he said, "If you come back for two weeks,
07:54 "I'll finish all of your scenes and that's it."
07:57 So I came back, I said, "Ronnie, I'll only come back for you."
08:01 And I did because he's just such an amazing man.
08:04 And I feel really bad that we've lost him,
08:06 but he is incredible.
08:08 - Great man.
08:09 [speaking in foreign language]
08:12 2012, I remember,
08:14 [speaking in foreign language]
08:15 which is now Hope in a Box
08:17 and the permutation for Hope in a Bottle.
08:21 And you've always been passionate
08:23 about doing things for others,
08:25 [speaking in foreign language]
08:27 inspiring others,
08:28 [speaking in foreign language]
08:32 There are people who live to be of service
08:43 to others and to country.
08:45 And you're very passionate about this.
08:47 [speaking in foreign language]
08:48 Where is this coming from?
08:50 My second question is,
08:52 is there anything that will make you come back
08:58 to show business and do at least one movie again?
09:02 The answer, when we come back,
09:05 [speaking in foreign language]
09:06 to Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.
09:07 [upbeat music]
09:10 [speaking in foreign language]
09:14 Nanette, [speaking in foreign language]
09:17 Hope in a Bottle, 2012, you started this project.
09:22 [speaking in foreign language]
09:25 Talk about it.
09:26 - Oh my goodness.
09:27 [speaking in foreign language]
09:31 We had nothing.
09:34 And I remember you were so kind.
09:37 I told you my story about wanting to support
09:40 public schools and build public schools.
09:42 And [speaking in foreign language]
09:44 public school teacher.
09:45 And so you said, absolutely.
09:47 [speaking in foreign language]
09:48 Because I want to support the public schools
09:51 and I think my mom would love this.
09:53 So you were there from the very beginning.
09:55 I will never forget that.
09:57 And maybe later, I think we have something to share
10:01 because we actually wound up,
10:03 one of our very first classrooms was turned over for you
10:06 in your name in Laguna.
10:08 [speaking in foreign language]
10:09 Yeah, and I don't know if you remember,
10:12 but, and is it okay to do this now?
10:15 - Yes, yes, yes.
10:16 - Okay, so I don't know if you remember,
10:18 but when we got there, you were your usual,
10:21 you know, amazing self and you showed up for the turnover.
10:24 The kids were so happy, the parents, the teachers.
10:27 And when we were there, you gave them a Philippine flag
10:32 that they could hoist above the school
10:37 because [speaking in foreign language]
10:39 at that time, a good flag for you
10:43 or for your classroom.
10:45 And I just want to let you know that this morning,
10:47 our team was actually at your school, at your classroom.
10:53 And the very flag that you gave them 10 years ago,
10:57 they would like to give back to you.
10:58 They've been using it.
11:00 [audience awing]
11:01 They've been using it for the past 10 years.
11:05 And if you'll notice,
11:06 [speaking in foreign language]
11:10 but very well used, and they would like to return it to you
11:13 as a thank you for 10 years.
11:15 - Thank you, Nabila.
11:16 - Of children learning in your classroom.
11:18 And I remember on that day, boy was very emotional
11:22 because he said-- - I was.
11:23 I am now.
11:24 - Yeah, he said, "I get many gifts in my life,
11:28 "but none is more meaningful than a Philippine flag
11:32 "because you are, if nothing, a patriot, boy."
11:35 And from a public school, your mom would be so happy.
11:40 [speaking in foreign language]
11:44 And being able to share on what you're doing
11:50 is actually providing hope,
11:52 providing classrooms for kids
11:55 means so much to me in a very, very, very personal way.
12:00 - Yes, well, [speaking in foreign language]
12:06 this is because of your mom.
12:08 And so [speaking in foreign language]
12:16 and we know how special your mom is to you.
12:20 And they said there was a photo shoot
12:24 in one of your commercials.
12:27 [speaking in foreign language]
12:28 And so [speaking in foreign language]
12:31 for your birthday.
12:32 They want to give it to you
12:33 and wish you a very, very, very, very happy birthday.
12:37 - Oh.
12:38 [audience applauding]
12:45 [speaking in foreign language]
12:49 Oh my God.
12:50 Nanai was a public school teacher.
12:54 She was a grade one teacher.
12:56 For 41 years, 11 months, and two days,
13:00 she made sure that I remember the statistics.
13:05 She made sure it was not 42 years.
13:08 She made sure it was not 41 years.
13:10 She made sure I always say,
13:12 41 years, 11 months, and two days.
13:15 And I am proud.
13:16 I am proud.
13:18 [audience applauding]
13:22 Thank you.
13:25 - You're welcome.
13:26 [speaking in foreign language]
13:28 Talking about how we would like to be remembered.
13:31 People would say,
13:32 "How do you want yourself to be remembered?"
13:34 And I would say,
13:36 you know, some people would not agree if they say,
13:37 "I was, I tried to be the best host.
13:40 "I tried to be the best interviewer."
13:43 That's debatable.
13:45 But when I say,
13:47 I was the best child to my mother,
13:49 I'm okay.
13:51 [speaking in foreign language]
13:53 - And she was so proud of you.
13:54 - She was.
13:55 She really was.
13:57 But let's go back to Hope.
13:59 How does this work?
14:00 [speaking in foreign language]
14:04 - Okay.
14:06 [speaking in foreign language]
14:07 - No, no, no, no.
14:08 [speaking in foreign language]
14:12 - Well, I mean,
14:18 Hope is both, yes, a water,
14:20 but it's also a concept, right?
14:21 I mean,
14:22 if all of us can do at least one good thing
14:26 for another each day,
14:28 then I think the world just becomes a better place.
14:30 And in our case,
14:31 we have a water now.
14:32 [speaking in foreign language]
14:37 We really go and build classrooms
14:39 in some of the really desperate communities
14:42 around the country.
14:43 So that's the way we do it at Hope.
14:45 But that doesn't mean that's the only way
14:47 that you can do good in your life, right?
14:51 Every day you make a choice.
14:53 And I think that if you can just do one good thing,
14:56 the world is so much better for it.
14:58 [speaking in foreign language]
14:59 - Let me go back to show business.
15:00 [speaking in foreign language]
15:04 And perhaps just do one movie.
15:07 What would this be?
15:08 - I have no idea.
15:10 I have no idea.
15:11 I've never thought about it.
15:12 And I can't imagine what it would be, but.
15:15 - But for example,
15:16 it's a movie that would help your advocacies,
15:21 that would probably help Hope.
15:23 We can think of a title like "Pag-asa."
15:27 [laughing]
15:29 - Build classrooms.
15:30 - Build classrooms.
15:32 The story of classrooms.
15:33 - I don't know what I can do, but yeah.
15:36 - I mean, is it something that you wouldn't even think about?
15:41 - I don't think about it.
15:43 [speaking in foreign language]
15:46 I don't think anyone will miss me if I don't come back.
15:49 - No.
15:51 [laughing]
15:53 It would be so exciting.
15:54 It would be so exciting.
15:56 I just miss you.
15:57 And [speaking in foreign language]
16:01 My last question is,
16:02 how did it feel coming back to studio?
16:04 How did it feel coming into GMA7?
16:08 How did it feel to be embraced again
16:10 by the industry that you were once part of?
16:13 - It's so amazing.
16:14 The last time that I was here at Channel 7,
16:17 this building was not here yet.
16:18 [laughing]
16:20 I was like, "Oh, there's a building here."
16:22 So it's been a while,
16:24 but can I just say your staff met me downstairs
16:27 and it's been an amazing experience up to here.
16:30 And everyone was just,
16:33 I remember the warmth that came with this job
16:36 and I do miss that.
16:37 So thank you so much.
16:39 [speaking in foreign language]
16:40 [audience applauding]
16:44 - I don't know, we usually end this program
16:46 by doing acting exercises or dancing or doing TikTok,
16:50 but we're making an exception.
16:52 Yes, I'm gonna end there,
16:53 but I have to give the flowers first.
16:55 - Oh, thank you.
16:56 - And I will have to do fast talk with you.
16:58 - Okay, oh my God.
16:59 [audience applauding]
17:02 - I will have to do fast talk with Ms. Nanette Medved.
17:05 - I said I didn't wanna hear the questions
17:06 'cause I'm so nervous.
17:08 I just left, I didn't do the interview.
17:11 - We have to do this quickly.
17:13 - Oh my gosh.
17:13 - We have how many minutes?
17:15 Two minutes.
17:16 And our time, Nanette, begins now.
17:19 Darna, Narda.
17:21 - Darna.
17:22 - Superhero, super mom.
17:23 - Ooh, super mom.
17:25 - Hope, love.
17:26 - Hope.
17:27 - Beauty or brains?
17:28 - Brains.
17:29 - Public or private?
17:30 - Private.
17:31 - Loud or soft?
17:32 - Soft.
17:33 - Bottle of water or bottle of wine?
17:35 - Bottle of wine?
17:36 [audience laughing]
17:37 - Lilipad or lalangoy?
17:38 - Lilipad.
17:40 - Favorite movie you did?
17:42 - Dito sa Pitong Gatang.
17:44 - Your favorite leading man?
17:45 - FBJ.
17:46 - Your beauty secret?
17:48 - Clearly none.
17:49 [laughing]
17:51 - One thing you're grateful for?
17:53 - Only one?
17:54 - Yeah.
17:55 - The relationships in my life.
17:57 - One thing you're proud of?
17:59 - My children.
17:59 - What's your prayer to God?
18:01 - This is gonna be a Miss Universe moment.
18:05 - Yes.
18:06 - Oh my gosh.
18:07 Of course I pray for,
18:09 I pray for goodness in this world.
18:12 - Is that lights on or lights off?
18:14 - For what?
18:17 Okay.
18:18 - In whatever context you want.
18:19 - Shining the light on the plastic pollution problem
18:23 on my staff.
18:24 Okay, okay.
18:25 Thank you, Athalee.
18:26 - So is that on or off?
18:29 - On.
18:30 Shining the light on the plastic pollution problem.
18:32 - I get it.
18:33 Happiness or chocolates?
18:34 - Oh, somebody told me earlier what that means.
18:38 [laughing]
18:39 Can I just say happiness?
18:41 [laughing]
18:43 - Best time for happiness, Nanette.
18:45 - Oh, come on.
18:46 [laughing]
18:48 Hmm, I don't know.
18:50 - Complete the sentence.
18:53 I am Nanette Medved-Po,
18:56 and I am a woman of
18:59 action.
19:00 [bell dinging]
19:01 [audience applauding]
19:04 - Nanette, maraming maraming salamat.
19:07 - Thank you.
19:08 - Thank you very much.
19:09 And thank you for making all of us happy.
19:13 I'm very happy that you could join me today.
19:15 Maraming salamat.
19:16 Naytay kapuso, maraming maraming salamat po
19:19 sa inyong pagpapatuloy sa amin,
19:20 sa inyong mga tahanan at puso araw-araw.
19:22 Bukas po, abangan niyo po makakasama po
19:25 ang isa pang kaibigan,
19:27 ang nag-iisang Jessica Soho,
19:29 para maki-birthday din po sa atin.
19:32 And yes, be kind.
19:34 Make your Nana and Tare proud.
19:35 Hashtag say thank you.
19:37 And just one, isa lang,
19:39 do one good thing a day,
19:40 and let's make this world a better place.
19:43 Goodbye for now, and God bless.
19:44 [audience applauding]
19:45 [upbeat music]
