The inking of an agreement between mobile network operators (MNOs) and Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) will not occur this month as previously anticipated, says Fahmi Fadzil.

Speaking to reporters after launching DNB's "My5G Portal" on Thursday (Oct 26), the Communications and Digital Minister said this was because there were still some matters to be ironed out before a deal could be finalised.

00:07 This afternoon I had a meeting with the
00:15 5G Task Force
00:18 Co-Chairs
00:19 Dato' KSP and Dato' KSU of the Ministry
00:22 We discussed a few matters which I will convey
00:26 to all of the MNOs and
00:28 we hope that
00:30 some of the details that I have mentioned we were
00:34 going through
00:36 can now be resolved
00:38 and that we can move expeditiously to the signing of the SSA
00:42 the Share Subscription Agreement
00:47 I had hoped that it could be done within the month of October
00:51 but there's some slight delay
00:52 because there's some
00:54 details that we have to review
00:57 so I'm happy to say that the review is done
01:01 so we can communicate this with the
01:03 respective MNOs and then we can, inshallah
01:06 if everything is okay we can probably proceed
01:09 in a short period of time
01:12 Can you share some of the reasons for the delay in the Share Capital Signing?
01:16 Yeah, there are some things that
01:19 have been discussed and there were some proposals, counter proposals, some
01:22 discussion
01:23 some analysis that needs to be done
01:25 some assessment
01:26 from technical point of view, from
01:29 financial aspects
01:30 and
01:32 these things do take a bit of time
01:34 but I'm happy to say that we are almost
01:37 ready to announce a date for signing
01:41 I just need to
01:42 have a quick word with all of the MNOs very soon
01:45 Will it be within this year?
01:47 Yes, inshallah
01:49 The migration from 4G to 5G
01:51 I think you mentioned in your speech
01:54 that you are a KM, so you're quite so
01:57 So will it be cheaper? Who has to bear the cost?
01:59 Is there a prospect of it being
02:02 affordable for the general Malaysian?
02:04 Yes, right now I think we have
02:09 consistently over the last few months particularly based on
02:13 data
02:15 and reports by DOSM
02:18 we have successfully
02:21 controlled inflation particularly for the communication sector
02:26 where we've seen over the last three or four months actually
02:29 consistent
02:30 deflation of
02:32 3.7 percent
02:34 so this is a good indicator that
02:37 in Malaysia the communication sector is seeing
02:40 a negative inflation rate
02:42 and
02:43 specifically for 5G
02:46 while generally internet costs will go down
02:49 we are in some final discussion with the MNOs
02:53 that are charging
02:55 to see what we can do
02:57 to ensure more Malaysians
02:59 will be able to benefit
03:00 from 5G that has been rolled out
03:03 I mentioned that there are 2.4 million
03:06 accounts right now that use 5G
03:09 out of
03:10 in parliament I mentioned that there are 49.4 million
03:14 telco accounts right now
03:17 active in the country
03:19 but
03:20 out of
03:21 all of the users right now based on what I was last informed
03:25 there are only about 7 million 5G ready devices
03:28 which is why
03:29 on the 31st of August we launched the 5G Rahma package
03:33 that will help up to 100,000
03:35 B40 families particularly
03:38 to get
03:40 5G ready devices
03:42 for a very affordable price
03:45 so we hope that
03:46 in the coming months more Malaysians will
03:49 take advantage of
03:50 very fast
03:52 5G internet speeds
03:54 very affordable if not cheap
03:56 in fact I'm very happy to say that
03:59 the five major MNOs are
04:02 competing
04:04 very
04:05 well between them
04:08 to present or to give the best packages
04:11 5G packages so you can choose
04:13 and pick whichever is to your heart's desire
04:16 or to your pocket's content
04:18 so it's up to you
04:19 you
04:21 you
04:23 you
