New polling from Ipsos shows half the public think it is likely that Keir Starmer will become Prime Minister. Only one in four say the opposite.

These latest numbers show even a majority of 2019 Conservative voters are predicting that Keir Starmer will enter Number 10. The recent upside poll revealed 37% believe Keir Starmer has improved the Labour party, while 37% see no change, and 16% feel he's made it worse. Only 22% think Rishi Sunak will win the next General Election, with 63% doubting his chances.

Confidence in Sunak's electoral ability is at its lowest since he became Prime Minister, down from 27% a year ago. In comparison, Liz Truss had 13% support in October 2023, while Boris Johnson had 30% in June 2022. As Conservative leader, 41% believe Sunak has made no difference, 30% think he's changed it for the worse, and 20% for the better.

00:00 It's really hard to see that you can do anything other than just continue as he is.
00:05 That the general election, which of course will happen either in 2023 or as late as January
00:12 2035, would seem to be a foregone conclusion.
00:15 It would take a miracle for the Conservatives to win.
00:18 And in fact, when I say a miracle, I'm talking of monumental proportions.
00:23 They will probably get a surreal trouncing, indeed, if the two by-elections were translated
00:28 into a general election result, they would end up with something like 20 seats, which
00:32 of course means they'd fit into the back of a minibus.
00:35 The recent Ipsos poll revealed 37% of people believe Sakhir Starmer has improved the Labour
00:41 Party, while 37% see no change.
00:44 16% feel he's made things worse.
00:48 Only 22% think Rishi Sonak will win the next general election, with 63% doubting his chances.
00:56 Sonak, he came in with the provisor.
00:58 Remember when he stood on the steps of Down Street and said he was going to be a new administration,
01:03 going to be honest and accountable?
01:06 We've seen a lot of things happen which suggest that he's not been as honest, not handing
01:09 over his phone to the COVID inquiry.
01:12 The fact that his wife, through her business investments, has done fairly well.
01:17 There's a whole host of things like that which suggest that Sonak is not the man he once
01:23 claimed to be.
01:24 And indeed the whole reason for raising Dexter was to make the Conservative Party different
01:28 to what it was before and quite clearly people don't believe that that's happening.
01:32 So why would they vote for a party that's given them more of the same?
01:36 In the week that sees his one year premiership anniversary, there are reports published in
01:40 the Sunday Times that up to 25 Conservative MPs are considering submitting no confidence
01:46 letters following by-election losses in Tamworth and mid-Bedfordshire.
01:51 The mechanics of so doing would require over 50 MPs to declare no confidence.
01:58 There's obviously a groundswell of opinion within the Conservative Party that Sonak is
02:02 not producing the miracle that they hoped for, quite clearly after Boris Johnson and
02:06 of course the disastrously short reign of Liz Truss.
02:10 I don't see it to be honest.
02:11 I think the appetite for another change of leadership, it'll just look bad to the public.
02:18 Our confidence in Rishi Sonak's electoral ability is at its lowest since he became Prime
02:23 Minister.
02:24 It's down 27% from a year ago.
02:26 In comparison Liz Truss had 13% support in October 2023 while Boris Johnson had 30% in
02:34 June 2022.
02:36 As Conservative leader, 41% believe Sonak has made no difference, 30% thinks he's changed
02:43 things for the worse and just 20% think he's changed things for the better.
02:48 So having some degree of certainty and stability is what people really want and indeed what
02:52 they most want is for themselves and their children's prospects to improve and let's
02:57 face it, that was the big promise that was made by a certain Boris Johnson if we left
03:01 the European Union and that has not yet happened.
