00:00:48 We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians support Canadian chicken
00:00:53 farmers and the supply management system.
00:00:55 >> When consumers see the Raised by a Canadian Farmer brand,
00:00:59 they can know that that chicken was raised in a healthy, safe environment.
00:01:05 >> Happy birds are healthy birds, and
00:01:07 healthy birds provide the healthy food source for Canadians.

00:05:11 >> Hello everyone, welcome to beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
00:05:15 The final day of competition at Skate Canada International.
00:05:18 Week number two on the Grand Prix Series.
00:05:21 We take a flyover, Grouse Mountain down from Grouse Mountain over the city.
00:05:26 Beautiful harbor here.
00:05:27 Take a look at Stanley Park, the outer harbor.

00:05:36 Skate Canada International, the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Center,
00:05:40 on the campus of the University of British Columbia.
00:05:42 I'm your host, Ted Barton, along with Caitlin Osmond, 2018 World Champion,
00:05:47 the women's free program coming up as we look at Caitlin,
00:05:50 the beautiful colors here in the fall.
00:05:54 >> It's absolutely gorgeous and I kind of wish my campus looked like this.
00:05:58 >> It doesn't?
00:06:00 >> Maybe it does, maybe I'm just oblivious.
00:06:02 >> Probably snow now in Edmonton.
00:06:04 >> Yeah, a little bit of snow.
00:06:05 >> Coming up soon.

00:07:00 >> Welcome live inside the Doug Mitchell Arena on the campus of the University of British Columbia.
00:07:13 This building was constructed for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, the women's hockey tournament.
00:07:19 That was a great week here back in 2010, Caitlin.
00:07:22 >> I believe it.
00:07:23 I wish I was there, but I wasn't.
00:07:25 [LAUGHTER]
00:07:27 >> Well, the women's free program, you watched the practice sessions this morning.
00:07:30 What did you see?
00:07:31 >> Well, there's a lot of fight, especially in this first warm-up group,
00:07:36 going in a little bit lower ranking for a few skaters.
00:07:40 This Canadian's, of course, wanting to improve on their short program performances,
00:07:45 making a few errors, but the scores are relatively close in this competition,
00:07:50 and there's going to be -- there is room for a lot of movement going into this free program.
00:07:56 >> It's so difficult after the short program, if you don't have the placement you hoped for.
00:08:01 Do you take a look at the points and say, "That doesn't matter now because I'm really close"?
00:08:06 >> I think it depends on the skater there.
00:08:08 For me, I wanted to know nothing.
00:08:10 I wanted to be as oblivious as possible so I could focus on my own job.
00:08:14 But, of course, that does motivate a lot of other skaters to know,
00:08:18 "Okay, what is the point difference of what do I need to accomplish,
00:08:21 and how much does someone else need to follow?"
00:08:25 >> And as we take a look at the technical panel for this event,
00:08:31 we thank all the officials, of course.
00:08:36 And there is the first group ready to take to the ice.
00:08:40 [MUSIC]
00:08:44 >> Kaya has her smile back.
00:08:46 >> Yeah, there. And Maddie knows where the camera is.
00:08:49 >> -- for a six-minute warm-up.
00:08:53 [MUSIC]
00:09:04 >> From France, Nathalie Savitou.
00:09:08 [APPLAUSE]
00:09:11 >> From Italy, Lara Nathalie Buchmann.
00:09:14 [APPLAUSE]
00:09:17 >> From Canada, Savonidou Diouf.
00:09:20 [APPLAUSE]
00:09:23 >> From Canada, Liliana Breyer.
00:09:26 [APPLAUSE]
00:09:29 >> From Canada, Madeline Smithers.
00:09:31 [APPLAUSE]
00:09:34 >> From Japan, Reika Otamaki.
00:09:37 [APPLAUSE]
00:09:40 >> And there is a six-minute warm-up.
00:09:43 [MUSIC]
00:09:47 >> And there is a look at the start order for group number one.
00:09:51 Just a little background about me, Berenice.
00:09:54 Nathalie was injured for a whole year, so just coming back on the Grand Prix,
00:09:59 and you saw her struggle a little bit in the short program and in the practice sessions as well.
00:10:04 Can you talk a little bit about how difficult it is to come back from injury
00:10:07 and sort of reinsert yourself in high-level competition?
00:10:10 >> Of course, and she got that injury, a ruptured Achilles tendon,
00:10:14 during the short program at the World Championships in 2021.
00:10:18 So not only a significant injury, but a significant injury in competition.
00:10:24 So having to overcome that fear itself and gaining confidence, yes.
00:10:29 She started competing last year, not many competitions out,
00:10:34 and this is her first Skate Canada competition ever.
00:10:37 So just gaining that confidence, gaining that experience,
00:10:42 and being happy and grateful with where she's going next.
00:10:46 >> As we take a look at Laura Gnocchi-Gutmann from Italy.
00:10:52 Also a very skilled skater, but up and down, inconsistent through her career so far,
00:10:57 and searching for that consistency, which every skater does,
00:11:00 because it's so difficult to pursue that perfect performance,
00:11:04 and then once you get it, to repeat it is even that much tougher.
00:11:08 >> The fight for consistency, the part of skating that seems to be the most challenging,
00:11:14 but she's getting to a very interesting free program, so looking forward to that.
00:11:21 Here's a look at Sarah Mode-Dupuis.
00:11:25 Looking a little nervous over the last few days.
00:11:30 Also her first senior Grand Prix event, so gaining that experience,
00:11:34 realizing she's competing against literally the best in the world right now.
00:11:42 Here's Kaya Reiter from Canada.
00:11:46 A few upsets, it's the first time I've ever seen her not bubbling and happy following a short program.
00:11:53 Of course there was a mistake on the first jump, falling on the triple lutz,
00:12:01 but showing a lot of improvement, stepping up onto the senior Grand Prix stage,
00:12:06 following pretty good junior experiences a few years back.
00:12:13 >> Well, I had a conversation with Scott, her coach,
00:12:16 and he was talking a little bit about that shock for her yesterday,
00:12:22 and that's actually a good thing to learn, because you have to cope with every situation.
00:12:28 So we'll see how she does in the free program.
00:12:30 If you take a look at Madeline Skies, two-time Canadian champion,
00:12:34 and really has improved her performance, her engagement in the music, her facial expression,
00:12:40 certainly has the technical elements need to deliver that, but her performance is much higher.
00:12:46 >> Very much improved, and it is equally frustrating the more work you put into your skating,
00:12:51 and when it doesn't deliver the way you want, just like she said yesterday following the short program,
00:12:56 she was angry and frustrated, but wants to show a free skate today,
00:12:59 and you see that determination throughout her practice this morning.
00:13:02 >> And there is Rinka Watanabe from Japan, who trained here in Vancouver for about three years,
00:13:07 went back home to Japan, and never was on the junior Grand Prix circuit, never competed internationally,
00:13:11 got an international debut, won Skate Canada last year in a surprise,
00:13:16 and continued to have a wonderful year, and she's really glad to be back home here in Vancouver a little bit,
00:13:22 visited with her families that took her in during her stay here in Vancouver.
00:13:27 >> She said in the short program warm-up, she was really focused on her triple lutz,
00:13:34 as it wasn't going the way she was looking to accomplish it,
00:13:38 and decided in that moment to put the combination on the triple loop in the second half of her program,
00:13:43 something that she's more comfortable and reliable with,
00:13:46 and then all she said was, "Well, that didn't work, oh well, it is time for the triple lutz, triple toe comeback today."
00:13:53 >> There you go.
00:13:55 How hard is it to adjust when something goes wrong to actually think about,
00:14:01 "Now where do I want to put this," or you have a plan B, obviously.
00:14:04 >> There's always a plan B.
00:14:06 For me, I had to focus on what I trained with, what I wanted to do,
00:14:10 but also others have a different technique where they will try different versions every single day,
00:14:17 and on the day of competition decide which version will suit them best that day.
00:14:22 >> That's tough, but if they practice it.
00:14:24 I want to welcome into the broadcast our SmartBug Radio fans here in the audience.
00:14:29 Thank you for joining the conversation and joining this broadcast.
00:14:33 We will not speak during the program at all,
00:14:36 but we will give a summary during the replays and right after the program,
00:14:40 and of course set that up in the warm-up as you see right now.
00:14:44 So thank you.
00:14:45 We will be continuing this service at the National Championships in Calgary.
00:14:49 That's going to be so exciting, and of course World Championships in Montreal as well.
00:14:52 We'll have SmartBug Radio service during those events.
00:14:59 We hope you enjoy the coverage.
00:15:01 Of course, we have all four disciplines here.
00:15:04 Caitlin Weber will be joining me for ice dance,
00:15:07 Kristen Moore-Towers for pairs, and Kevin Reynolds for the men's event.
00:15:11 But right now, we have the 2018 World Champion.
00:15:14 >> I know you're stuck with me.
00:15:15 >> Yeah, I know.
00:15:16 Gee, that's too bad.
00:15:17 I always enjoy working with you.
00:15:19 You have a sense of humor and honesty and openness.
00:15:23 It's awesome.
00:15:27 Last minute of the warm-up.
00:15:29 What did you do?
00:15:31 Just sort of skate around the ice?
00:15:33 >> Depending on how well the warm-up went, I guess.
00:15:36 For a free program, you do have a lot more elements to get through.
00:15:40 So it does take a little bit longer than in a short program.
00:15:44 But by the last minute, you should be ready to go do some edges.
00:15:48 I would always throw in a last-minute double axel.
00:15:54 >> Here we go.
00:15:55 Final day of competition, the women's free program.
00:15:58 12 entries.
00:16:05 As we mentioned, our first skater representing France, May Bounismeté,
00:16:11 has been really out for a season and has been obviously just getting back,
00:16:15 struggling a little bit, but you've got to get back to competition,
00:16:18 and that's what May is doing here in her first Grand Prix of the year.
00:16:24 29 years old.
00:16:28 12th after the short program, coached by Laurenzo Magri.
00:16:34 120.66, personal best back in 2018.
00:16:38 That's how long she has been off.
00:16:40 She's going to skate to "I Surrender" by Celine Dion.

00:20:57 >> Well, Caitlin, in many cases, there are personal victories.
00:21:00 Tell us a little bit about that.
00:21:03 >> She really has different goals going into competition.
00:21:07 And even though there were a lot of dewey and great of execution
00:21:12 and not the highest level of elements put in that program,
00:21:16 she fought throughout the entire program.
00:21:19 There was an aura of a new confidence compared to yesterday.
00:21:23 >> Coming off a year with injuries and coming back,
00:21:26 this was, I think, a personal victory.
00:21:28 You can see her coming off getting a hug from John DeMerman, their coach.
00:21:31 It's baby steps.
00:21:33 You cannot come back and expect to be perfect right away.
00:21:36 It comes with practice, this double axel step,
00:21:39 double axel sequence at the beginning of the program.
00:21:46 So much -- so much strength and height in that jump.
00:21:51 And then heading down the ice into this triple lutz.
00:21:55 It gets so much height, but it doesn't come out with a lot of speed.
00:21:58 So having to hang on, get the combination done.
00:22:03 And then she did one of the hardest things in the competition
00:22:06 right before this triple loop double toe.
00:22:09 She actually singled the triple loop before that.
00:22:13 And coming back, redoing a jump that you just made a mistake on
00:22:16 is one of the hardest things.
00:22:21 Having to do a double lutz at the end of the program
00:22:24 as she already rotated two triple lutzes earlier on
00:22:27 in this solo.
00:22:29 They were not fully rotated.
00:22:32 Under-rotated.
00:22:35 Two second triple loop, landing on the corner.
00:22:40 So there were mistakes, yes, but there's a lot to grow on.
00:22:45 Yeah, and she really struggled over the past two days in practice session
00:22:48 and of course yesterday in the short program.
00:22:50 So this was an improvement, no question,
00:22:52 and probably a little bit of a personal victory
00:22:54 for her, but she's got a little bit more confidence
00:22:56 as she moves through the year.
00:22:58 There is even more speed in her skating, more ice coverage
00:23:00 compared to that short program.
00:23:02 So you can see just little improvements each and every day,
00:23:05 each and every time you go out onto that ice.
00:23:07 And one of the things I like about Smart Park Radio
00:23:09 and also about streaming is we're able to give some background stories
00:23:12 so put some perspective for these athletes.
00:23:15 Not only what you see at the moment, but why do you see what you see
00:23:18 at that moment?
00:23:20 It can be early on in a journey or it could be partway through
00:23:22 and you never know what they're bringing to the rink.
00:23:24 It could be they've come off an illness or they just finished exams.
00:23:28 I heard her describe on her Instagram that she's still going through the storm.
00:23:33 She's not through it yet.
00:23:35 Let's take a look at the free program scores for May.
00:23:38 79.48, first skater out in this competition
00:23:41 with a total competition score of 121.13.
00:23:50 Now you can see a bit of a nod of approval. That's okay.
00:23:52 Some progress has been made.
00:23:54 The season has started.
00:23:56 Coming off that injury to get back, never an easy task.
00:24:00 Our next competitor represents Italy,
00:24:03 20-year-old Lara Guttmann,
00:24:06 three-time national champion of Italy,
00:24:09 eighth at Europeans last season and 17th in the world.
00:24:13 She's 11th here after the short program.
00:24:17 109.46, season's best in the free.
00:24:21 Would like to improve on that.
00:24:23 Unique and different programs, skating to vertical and hitchcock and cycle.

00:28:14 (MUSIC)
00:28:17 (MUSIC)
00:28:27 (APPLAUSE)
00:28:38 Okay, we have to talk about music choice
00:28:42 because the music choice of vertical, hitchcock and cycle,
00:28:45 I liked it.
00:28:47 I loved it. That was so unique, so different.
00:28:50 I don't think I've ever heard cycle on competitive ice.
00:28:54 No.
00:28:55 I need to look back at that.
00:28:56 And then interesting choreography with that.
00:28:58 I also haven't seen someone lay on the ice as an ending position in a long time.
00:29:01 No, it's been a long time because you didn't use to be able.
00:29:03 Since Katarina Witt?
00:29:04 Yeah, I think it's been a long time.
00:29:06 You know, she made this intentionally uncomfortable.
00:29:08 Did it create the stress of the movie?
00:29:11 Certainly the music brings back sort of memories,
00:29:13 but I thought she was intense.
00:29:15 Her facial expressions, you know, all of that went well with the music.
00:29:18 It was great. She had great sustained movement.
00:29:21 She had quirky little movements and her arms were very angular, very sharp.
00:29:26 But then, let's look at the jumps.
00:29:28 Okay, here we go.
00:29:30 So here is that opening triple lutz,
00:29:33 getting the arms above the head, not getting around on the rotation.
00:29:38 But after that?
00:29:40 But after that, everything was looking so strong.
00:29:43 She didn't let that bother her.
00:29:46 Here's a look at that triple toe.
00:29:48 A little bit back on the landing, but able to get straight into the double axel.
00:29:51 I'd love to see her hold her landings a little bit longer just to...
00:29:57 Oh, that one she did. She proved me wrong right there.
00:30:00 So, a triple flip.
00:30:02 She has nice jump technique, there's no question.
00:30:06 Look how tight she is in the air.
00:30:07 The feet are tucked together.
00:30:09 And you can see from the landing, she goes straight into the choreography,
00:30:14 trying to keep the speed and then going back and getting that jump,
00:30:17 the triple lutz, double toe jump later on in the program.
00:30:20 Directly into a great jump combination of a double axel, Euler, double sow.
00:30:28 Getting level four on all of her spins,
00:30:32 her step sequence, trying to maximize as many points as possible.
00:30:36 So easy to take for granted the spins, but man, they're major point getters.
00:30:41 As you mentioned, all the angular movements in that final position.
00:30:47 Kind of creepy, but that's what you want.
00:30:49 That's what you want me to.
00:30:51 That was awesome.
00:30:52 Just a reminder to those listening on SmartBug Radio,
00:30:54 we talked about the levels of difficulty.
00:30:56 The elements have the degree of difficulty.
00:30:58 There are up to level four, and different features get you that higher level and more points.
00:31:04 Let's take a look. The score is Seasons Bass, 115.73.
00:31:08 Difficult start with one mistake, but the rest of the way smooth sailing.
00:31:12 First in the free program with 165.73.
00:31:16 That'll put her in the lead for the moment.
00:31:19 Well done. Unique, different, her own.
00:31:25 I have to go watch those movies again.
00:31:29 Let's take a look at Stephane.
00:31:33 The coach of Sarah Mote-Dupuy.
00:31:36 18 years old, coming off the Junior Grand Prix Series last season,
00:31:44 moving into her first Senior Grand Prix event,
00:31:46 placing ninth a little earlier in the Oberstdorf competition senior event.
00:31:50 She's 10th after the short program here.
00:31:52 Go to play Stephane Ibarres.
00:31:59 There he is, 88.74, Seasons Bass, 118.99,
00:32:04 personal best skating, piano, concerto, number three in senior.

00:36:19 - Well, 12 elements and six reviews.
00:36:23 A little bit of a tight start, but really settled into the program a little bit later,
00:36:26 Haven.
00:36:27 - Yeah, it really looked like she really, really wanted it.
00:36:29 She got on the ice with this major attack, and on those earlier elements,
00:36:33 maybe just a little too much attack.
00:36:35 - Yeah.
00:36:36 - And then as she got a few elements under her belt,
00:36:38 she started to relax into it a little bit more,
00:36:41 still having to fight through it.
00:36:44 - And it's interesting because we, as skaters,
00:36:46 we can see that when they're a little bit more relaxed.
00:36:48 It's harder for the audience.
00:36:49 Well, it looked the same to me, but, you know,
00:36:51 that when a mistake happens at the top of the program,
00:36:53 things tighten up a little bit until you start to get some successes,
00:36:57 and then you start to feel a little bit more comfortable.
00:36:59 - You can even see it in their facial changes of the skater.
00:37:01 - Yeah.
00:37:02 - So, a lot more determination at the beginning.
00:37:04 So, here's a look at that opening triple lutz,
00:37:07 double toe, double loop,
00:37:11 very well executed.
00:37:13 And then heading down the ice into this planned double axel,
00:37:20 triple toe, but opting for the double as it picked just a little bit quick.
00:37:25 So, very rushed in between the two jumps,
00:37:28 then taking her time before setting up for this triple loop,
00:37:31 double axel, single axel.
00:37:34 Here's this triple toe hanging on.
00:37:43 It was very well timed to the music.
00:37:47 And then a second triple loop here.
00:37:50 Not getting the full rotation.
00:37:53 Coming in as under-rotated.
00:37:56 So, losing points in the base value of the jump.
00:37:59 But then beautiful moments like that triple sal.
00:38:04 So, it's just gaining confidence.
00:38:06 I say that all the time, but it is gaining confidence on the jumps,
00:38:10 especially the ones that you're not as comfortable with.
00:38:13 In the program last year at the National Championships,
00:38:16 I saw a difference out of Sarah Mode,
00:38:18 where she really performed and pushed across the ice,
00:38:22 and it's just gaining that same momentum early on in this season.
00:38:26 And all in all, this was a pretty good start for the season for Sarah Mode.
00:38:31 It's even a smile at the end of the program.
00:38:33 She's pretty pleased with that comeback and some success throughout the program,
00:38:37 and her first time at a Grand Prix event.
00:38:40 Junior Grand Prix last season, Senior Grand Prix this season.
00:38:44 Big transition. Let's take a look at the free program scores for Sarah Mode Dupuis from Canada.
00:38:49 Sarah Mode Dupuis from Canada.
00:38:56 Free program is 99.78.
00:38:59 That is a season's best. That is second in the free program so far.
00:39:02 With a total competition score...
00:39:05 151.95 as Sarah Mode moves currently, for the moment, at least, in the second place.
00:39:13 With a total competition score of 151.95, Sarah Mode is currently in second place.
00:39:21 Please welcome the next competitor.
00:39:23 Well, our next competitor also comes from Canada.
00:39:25 17-year-old Kaya Ryder that we saw yesterday.
00:39:28 Kaya Ryder!
00:39:30 It's not really...
00:39:31 You know, first time we didn't see her smile at the end of the program.
00:39:34 And she's a fighter, though.
00:39:36 And she wants to stay a strong, clean program here.
00:39:40 She needs 109.92 to take the lead.
00:39:45 Beautiful music to inspiration.

00:44:04 From Canada, Tanya Driver.
00:44:12 Such a contrast in this program from brilliance to difficult falls.
00:44:17 That last one's going to hurt for a little bit here.
00:44:23 But one thing that I really, really loved about this skate from Kaya is she didn't let the falls swell until the very last one.
00:44:32 That one is a different category.
00:44:35 But the early fall on the triple lutz and then again on the triple flip, there was no pause after the jump.
00:44:41 There's no pause after the fall.
00:44:42 It was just getting up, going, moving on to the next element.
00:44:46 And here's a look at that opening triple lutz.
00:44:49 I'm surprised she went for the triple toe and that comes from her experience, how much you can handle and what you know you can move on to.
00:44:57 But then heading straight back down the ice into this triple loop, beautifully done.
00:45:02 So many things very well executed in this program.
00:45:06 Directly in to her three jump combination, her triple flip, Euler triple sow, not quite getting the full rotation on the sow.
00:45:15 Coming in as under rotated.
00:45:17 But what I like so much about, even though there were mistakes, she did not give into doubt.
00:45:23 She kept fighting for that difficult element.
00:45:26 There were problems for sure, maybe the choice was difficult, but she didn't give into doubt.
00:45:32 She fought all the way.
00:45:33 Exactly, and that is the difference between today and even the short program yesterday, is that you could see the doubt set in after the fall in the opening jump yesterday.
00:45:41 Whereas today, it didn't happen.
00:45:44 She kept going.
00:45:45 She trusted her training.
00:45:47 And she's a competitor against herself.
00:45:49 She wants to continue to be better and sometimes it doesn't get better, but she's trying to push herself for that.
00:45:54 You can see the maturity in her performance.
00:45:57 The passion for perfection can drive you crazy at some times, but it will get you to the top eventually.
00:46:05 But her smile is back.
00:46:07 There it is.
00:46:08 It is back.
00:46:09 And it's important to know that perfection just does not exist and that push for perfection is extremely difficult.
00:46:15 Just aiming to improve on each time and aiming to be the best you can possibly be.
00:46:20 She's such a charmer.
00:46:26 And you love her fight and determination.
00:46:28 Beautiful skater as well.
00:46:30 Beautiful skater and you really see her improvement on the component side of her skating.
00:46:36 Not only the technical elements, but really evident in her step sequence.
00:46:41 Getting the level 4 step sequence today with a focus on the upper body, the smoothness of the turns, and her knee bend, which is getting much more smooth and fluid.
00:46:53 The softness on that triple loop landing, that soft knee bend, which has always been a little bit stiffer when she was younger and that's getting so much better now.
00:47:01 Well, let's take a look at the free program scores.
00:47:05 The Kaya Ryder, 99.62.
00:47:09 That is third in the free program.
00:47:11 With a total competition score of 155.44.
00:47:17 That would put Kaya Ryder currently in the second place.
00:47:20 [Clapping]
00:47:25 Wonderful skater, very bright future.
00:47:27 It's a long journey.
00:47:31 Our next competitor also represents Canada.
00:47:35 Two-time Canadian champion, 13th at the World Championships last season.
00:47:41 [Clapping]
00:47:44 A new baddie, short program, eighth placement.
00:47:49 We see much more emotion in her face and expression.
00:47:52 108.3, she'll need that to take the lead.

00:52:07 An outstanding...
00:52:08 [Clapping]
00:52:10 What an outstanding skate for Madeline Skiezas here at Skate Canada.
00:52:16 Standing ovation, a deserved standing ovation for that.
00:52:22 Absolutely pristine, clean, technically.
00:52:25 But not only that, she added facial expression and nuances in the program
00:52:30 that we have not seen from Maddie to this stage of her career.
00:52:33 Outstanding.
00:52:34 She looked very focused at the very beginning of her program
00:52:38 and then you can see that more relaxed Maddie,
00:52:42 that smile coming onto her face, every element, one step at a time.
00:52:48 Well, the choreographer for the free program, Carol Lane,
00:52:53 and Eurus Rizguliev for the free program.
00:52:57 Brilliant work, but not just in the choreography,
00:52:59 but giving her the confidence to use her face as a piece of the choreography
00:53:03 with the emotion.
00:53:04 What I really love about these new programs and the seemingly new Maddie
00:53:09 is that in the past I always felt so rushed and panicked in her program
00:53:14 and now it seems like she's so settled in,
00:53:16 taking her time to get from element to element.
00:53:18 Here's a look at that opening triple lutz, triple toe combination,
00:53:22 having that nice speed and flow that you're looking for,
00:53:25 gaining high GOEs on each and every element.
00:53:28 Triple flip, getting up into the air.
00:53:33 This is a new pattern into her triple flip that I've seen from her,
00:53:37 usually on a circle and now on a straight line.
00:53:40 Beautiful triple sow, just everything was executed so nicely.
00:53:47 Triple loop, she had that turnout in the short program, but not today.
00:53:58 Here's the spins, getting a level four on that combination spin.
00:54:05 And on her flying sit spin later on in the program.
00:54:12 Super slow motion of that double axel in the end.
00:54:18 Double axel, triple toe in the second half of the program,
00:54:21 getting that second half bonus of 10%.
00:54:26 Very strategic.
00:54:28 And another triple loop.
00:54:31 You know, you really mentioned throughout the program,
00:54:35 the attention to detail and just little nuances of a hand flick or a head nod.
00:54:41 And sometimes, even though detail can make you think a lot,
00:54:46 sometimes it actually stops your brain from worrying
00:54:49 because you have so much to think about.
00:54:51 - That's a good point, Caitlin.
00:54:53 You would know if you had lots of nuances in your program, that's for sure.
00:54:57 Well, her personal best is 132.04.
00:55:00 That's her personal best.
00:55:02 Season's best, 121.
00:55:03 She'll destroy that score.
00:55:05 Season's best, 132.47.
00:55:08 This is also her personal best now in the free program.
00:55:12 She's thrilled.
00:55:13 Two thumbs up.
00:55:14 Well, one for each person.
00:55:15 189.91 total competition score.
00:55:18 She takes over the lead.
00:55:20 Great skate from Madeline Skisis here at home.
00:55:24 Wow.
00:55:33 Next up, 21-year-old Rinka Watanabe from Japan.
00:55:38 Had a great competitive season last year,
00:55:41 winning Skate Canada International in Mississauga one year ago.
00:55:45 She's seventh here after the short program.
00:55:47 I think she was sixth after the short program last year and won the event.
00:55:50 We'll see what happens here today.
00:55:52 117.63 is her season's best in the free program.
00:55:58 She's going to skate to Goliath by Woodkid.

01:00:26 Well, what a great fight for Rinka.
01:00:30 There was some mistakes in there, notably that single lunge.
01:00:36 But, it didn't hinder the rest of the performance.
01:00:40 Gaining positive GOEs on her element.
01:00:45 A really entertaining program. It's different.
01:00:48 This program is different, but it suits her personality.
01:00:51 It's a little bit more stern, a little bit more, has an element of darkness to it.
01:00:55 And she plays that role extremely well.
01:00:58 She's hilarious off the ice. You wouldn't see that on the ice necessarily.
01:01:02 And her performance, program components, has really improved in the past season or two.
01:01:08 She's getting some confidence by winning this event a year ago.
01:01:11 And she's so quick in rotation.
01:01:14 I have to know if the upper part of that dress is distracting though.
01:01:17 Ah, good point.
01:01:19 Here's a look at that opening double axel.
01:01:22 This has been performed as a triple axel, and it was planned a triple axel.
01:01:27 But, after practice this week, choosing to stick with the double.
01:01:32 Here's a look at that triple loop, triple toe.
01:01:35 Something she wasn't able to get done yesterday.
01:01:39 So, accomplishing that today, even though she had to hang on to the jump.
01:01:43 But then this beautiful triple flip, getting high up into the air, landing, and then straight into choreography.
01:01:53 Getting level four is on all of her spins.
01:01:59 Leaving no points behind, especially following a few, one jumping error.
01:02:05 It's interesting, the skaters seem to be, at least at this level, they make one error.
01:02:12 They're not letting that bother them too much.
01:02:14 That's seasoned veterans that can handle that.
01:02:17 For sure, and in a long program, well, it's long.
01:02:21 You have four minutes to accomplish a lot of separate tasks.
01:02:26 Here's a look at that double axel, Euler triple sal.
01:02:31 Getting so much height across the ice.
01:02:34 Distance.
01:02:40 Beautiful spins, straight into her ending position.
01:02:44 Hold, gotta get into the ending position.
01:02:46 Yeah, hit the music.
01:02:49 Well, 146.31 is her personal best, but this season has only been able to score 117.63.
01:02:58 She should beat that score here today, probably not to reach personal best.
01:03:02 Let's take a look. Yes, it is the season's best at 124.56.
01:03:07 That is second in the free program. The total competition score is 192.08.
01:03:14 And that will bring it currently second place at this stage of the competition.
01:03:18 The final skater in group number one, there are six more to come.
01:03:22 Much better skating today.
01:03:29 Much better skating today. A lot of fighting in it.
01:03:32 Quite an attack from each and every skater.
01:03:36 [music]
01:03:38 Here's a look at the next group of skaters.
01:03:49 Always a nervous moment, but they're ready.
01:03:55 Six fierce competitors, had great success so far in their career as well.
01:04:03 You see the final skater, Nari Sakamoto, two-time world champion.
01:04:07 Here is Star Andrews from the United States.
01:04:10 And also Lindsey Thorngood.
01:04:17 Also from the United States, Audrey Shin.
01:04:25 From Japan, Rino Matsuki.
01:04:32 From Korea, Chaeyeon Kim.
01:04:35 And lastly, from Japan, Kari Sakamoto.
01:04:41 Six really good and really interesting skaters.
01:04:50 We'll see what happens in the next hour or so.
01:04:53 But pretty good in the first group.
01:04:56 Very good in the first group. Of course, Madeline Skiezes is leading after the first group.
01:05:01 After a phenomenal skate.
01:05:03 Probably the best one for her in, even through all of last year.
01:05:08 For sure. The last time she got one, her personal best score of...
01:05:13 Oh, I want to triple check something.
01:05:17 The last time she got a personal best score of 132, just slightly lower than her score of today, was the Olympics.
01:05:26 Wow. And we all know that was a pretty good performance.
01:05:30 So, she's going to be really pleased starting the season with that.
01:05:33 We take a look at Star Andrews. We talked about Star, a great singer.
01:05:37 She sang her short program and skated to that two years ago, I believe.
01:05:41 As we see Lindsey Thorngood, who is just out of juniors, now into seniors and transferred.
01:05:47 Transitioned very nicely.
01:05:49 And in an interview that I read from her yesterday, she thinks she's more calm than last year.
01:05:54 Which is very evident in her speed and her flow across the ice.
01:05:59 She still needs to get a little bit of work on that, but it's all a work in progress.
01:06:03 It just takes a lot of time. There's no quick way to getting to be the best, that's for sure.
01:06:08 She will apply for every single part of her program.
01:06:11 Very elegant. I've seen her do triple toe combinations off of nothing.
01:06:16 There's a look at Audrey Shin. She was a little bit mentally insecure yesterday in the short program,
01:06:25 as she had a little bit of pain in her calf. But today she's feeling good and looking forward to the free program.
01:06:31 She had a pretty good auditory classic in Montreal.
01:06:34 Did it ever bother you when you look up and you see yourself on the screen?
01:06:45 No, it's kind of nice.
01:06:47 I wanted attention. I saw it.
01:06:50 Did you start to stand there and forget what you're doing because you're looking at yourself?
01:06:54 Of course, Rino Matsuike skated early in the event yesterday in the first warm up through.
01:07:00 She's feeling really confident and happy following her short program.
01:07:06 She knows she can do a better combo as she missed a bit of rotation in that in the short program.
01:07:13 She feels happy to be here and to have the opportunity to compete in a big competition.
01:07:22 We're going to try to tie in Kim.
01:07:24 This is her first Grand Prix event. Her goal is to make it to the Grand Prix final this year.
01:07:33 Kari mentioned in her own interview saying she knew to look out for her after her third place finish in a free program at a World Championships last season.
01:07:46 She's skating really well. Had a few issues during the practice, but really good.
01:07:52 And then of course the two-time world champion and reigning world champion, Kari Sakamoto.
01:07:59 She was really funny in an interview yesterday saying she debated on doing a double toe combination after the triple flip after not landing properly.
01:08:11 You hear her coach behind her saying "Hey!" and then decided to make sure she got that combination done.
01:08:16 And she landed so good for her.
01:08:19 And then a beautiful way to get her name announced with a gorgeous triple loop.
01:08:24 Isn't it interesting? We see these skaters out there. They're beautifully dressed of course and they're wonderful performers and athletes.
01:08:31 But we don't really know their personality. Kari Sakamoto, the world champion, looked quite serious at the moment because she's got business at hand.
01:08:40 But off the ice, her personality, she is so much fun, so funny.
01:08:44 Well you can see that in the Kiss and Cry after the short program yesterday.
01:08:47 She was obviously very thrilled and happy to the point where her coach had to be like "Okay, calm down."
01:08:53 Yeah, exactly.
01:08:56 Look at Lindsay. She has such amazing flexibility that she really demonstrates throughout the choreography.
01:09:05 Now what happens for our fans here in the building on SmartPunk Radio, what happens at a 6 minute warm up?
01:09:12 When things don't go well, how do you get back on track?
01:09:16 Well you hope that you can get yourself back on track during the 6 minute warm up.
01:09:22 But sometimes it just doesn't happen and you have to take that time. Hopefully you're not the first skater at that point.
01:09:29 And you can take the time to talk to your coach, get resettled, go back to your routine of what your plan was.
01:09:35 And hopefully refocus for the program.
01:09:38 The warm up doesn't count for anything. It's just to get your feet under you.
01:09:43 But the reverse of that, you have a great warm up, what happens when you get off the ice?
01:09:48 Sometimes you're too confident then.
01:09:52 Sometimes the best warm up to do is have a great warm up with a few little wobbles.
01:09:59 Keeps you alert.
01:10:01 Keeps you alert. You need the brain to be awake.
01:10:04 It's easy to fall into habits when you're nervous.
01:10:10 And you want to rely on muscle memory.
01:10:14 Not letting the brain overthink, but also wanting to trust every bit of training that you have going into this.
01:10:22 Sorry, having a few issues on her triple flip earlier today.
01:10:31 Proving me wrong with that combination.
01:10:34 Well you said earlier today, you were safe right?
01:10:36 I was safe. Beautiful triple flip, triple toe.
01:10:40 What I love about her skating is she just can cover the ice with very minimal crossovers.
01:10:46 Which really sets her apart from a lot of skaters.
01:10:50 Has to be one of the fastest skaters.
01:10:52 It's always nice to know, and I think eventually we will know, sometimes we do, how fast skaters actually travel across the ice.
01:10:57 And how far they skate in the program.
01:10:59 That's data and information hopefully yet to come in our sport.
01:11:04 Please welcome the next skater.
01:11:06 The next competitor, 22 years old, representing the United States of America.
01:11:10 Star Andrews took the silver medal from this event last year in Mississauga.
01:11:15 Climbed up to fourth in the United States.
01:11:17 She's sixth after the short program here.
01:11:20 In her second visit to Skate Canada International.
01:11:23 126.57 personal best last season.
01:11:28 Skating to being good isn't good enough.
01:11:35 Being good isn't good enough.
01:12:04 Being good won't be good enough.
01:12:14 When I fly, I must fly extra high.
01:12:21 And I'll need special wings so far to go.
01:12:30 From so far below.
01:12:37 Should I try?
01:12:41 Am I strong enough?
01:12:46 Is there time?
01:12:49 Have I long enough?
01:12:55 I've got to fly.
01:13:01 And if I fall, that's the way it's got to be.
01:13:07 There's no other way for me.
01:13:13 Being good just won't be good enough.
01:13:21 I'll be the best at nothing at all.
