00:06:57 What an amazing event yesterday.
00:07:00 - Yeah, now you've been watching the pair practices
00:07:03 this morning, of course, and all weekend.
00:07:04 What can we expect in the free program?

00:07:07 - Yes, absolutely.
00:07:08 This morning, definitely a more solid practice,
00:07:11 more well-rounded from all of the athletes.
00:07:13 Yesterday, we mentioned we saw a little bit of nerves,

00:08:07 and then the judges will add to,

00:08:32 but anticipation, of course.
00:08:34 - Nerves are good.
00:08:35 - They are good.
00:08:36 And why are they good?
00:08:36 Because there's a lot of young people watching this
00:08:38 and listening to this.
00:08:39 Why are nerves good?
00:08:40 - Nerves and excitement,
00:08:41 that anticipation really can help you
00:08:43 if you channel it appropriately.
00:08:45 - And that's the F.
00:08:48 - That's right.
00:08:48 That's the hard part.

00:09:13 There is a look at the start order
00:09:18 and the placements, the points for the short program.
00:09:20 Okay, talk to us a little bit about the warmup here
00:09:25 for the free program.
00:09:25 Is it any difference between the free
00:09:27 and the short program warmup?
00:09:29 - Yeah, absolutely.
00:09:30 I mean, the overall end goal is the same.
00:09:32 These skaters are trying to get warm,
00:09:33 getting into their ankles, their knees,
00:09:35 feeling the rhythm with one another,
00:09:37 but there are more elements for them to warm up.
00:09:39 So likely it will be a little bit more
00:09:42 of a condensed version of warming up all of these elements.
00:09:45 They need to get a lot of things done.
00:09:47 It's likely that they won't warm up every element
00:09:50 in their free program because there are just too many.
00:09:53 They'll decide with their team what is most appropriate
00:09:56 and what's most necessary for them
00:09:57 to warm up on these six minutes.
00:09:58 - So in the senior grand prix, you know,
00:10:01 they're pretty experienced,
00:10:02 so I don't think you ever run into this problem,
00:10:03 but if there are some challenges with some elements,
00:10:06 when do you sort of give, not give up on it,
00:10:08 but you say, no, no, I got to move on here
00:10:10 'cause I don't want to keep making the same mistake.
00:10:12 - Yeah, absolutely.
00:10:13 Everybody's different.
00:10:14 I think if you've attempted an element three times
00:10:17 and it's not going your way,
00:10:18 probably it's time to do an exercise,
00:10:21 maybe a lower degree of difficulty.
00:10:23 Perhaps if it's a throw,
00:10:24 you might go back to a double or a walkthrough.
00:10:26 That will be up to each team,
00:10:28 but certainly not the best idea to hammer away
00:10:32 at any one element for the entire six minutes.
00:10:35 - We welcome the listeners here on SmartBug Radio.
00:10:40 Thank you for joining our broadcast here.
00:10:44 And we will be continuing this
00:10:46 at the national championships in Calgary.
00:10:48 That's going to be an incredible event, Kirsten,
00:10:50 because that is the battle for, in the juniors,
00:10:53 to represent Canada at the junior world championship
00:10:55 and the world championship for seniors in Montreal.
00:10:58 And why is that so important?
00:10:59 Because those athletes that get to represent our country
00:11:01 also have the burden, if you will,
00:11:03 or the pressure to earn the spots,
00:11:05 to get more participation on the junior grand prix
00:11:08 and the senior grand prix.
00:11:09 So it all depends on their world rankings
00:11:12 of how many skaters we get to send out.
00:11:14 - That's right, and maybe even more meaningful this year
00:11:17 for the seniors with the world championships
00:11:18 being in Montreal.
00:11:19 Everybody is going to want to be at that event.
00:11:22 And pair skating in Canada is really building
00:11:25 its way back up, going through a regrowth.
00:11:27 We have a ton of really great promise in pair skating,
00:11:31 and in the next few years, we're going to see that.
00:11:33 - And we can see Brooke McIntosh and Benjamin Mimar,
00:11:36 who were just juniors just like a few years ago.
00:11:38 This is second year seniors.
00:11:39 Now on the junior grand prix, we have 50% of the teams
00:11:44 that are entered into the junior grand prix final.
00:11:47 That's outstanding.
00:11:48 - That's right, it's fantastic.
00:11:49 So amazing for these athletes,
00:11:51 and what a great experience that will be.
00:11:53 Here, Brooke and Ben setting up for their throw.
00:11:56 That was just a double Lutz,
00:11:57 warming up for her throw triple Lutz,
00:11:59 which will come a little bit later.
00:12:00 All of these teams will complete two different throws
00:12:05 in this free program.
00:12:06 It's mandatory that they are of a different variety.
00:12:09 We saw a throw Lutz there from Brooke.
00:12:11 They also will do a throw triple loop.
00:12:13 We will see one twist from all of these teams.
00:12:16 Three lifts, not all from the same group.
00:12:18 Today, we're going to see groups three, four, and five.
00:12:22 We talked about the group three lift yesterday.
00:12:24 That's the man lifting the woman by her hip.
00:12:27 Group four is of course the hand to hand.
00:12:29 Looks a little bit like a pressure lift.
00:12:31 And the group five earns the most points.
00:12:33 Here, a throw double loop from Kellyanne and Luca.
00:12:36 Group five earns the most points
00:12:37 because it is most difficult.
00:12:39 Either the athletes are entering in backwards
00:12:42 or the female has to turn half of a rotation
00:12:44 to get into her lifting position in the air.
00:12:47 Very tricky.
00:12:48 - That group five reverse lift is the most difficult
00:12:51 because you're going in blind
00:12:53 and you put your hand behind you
00:12:54 and you have to trust that the gentleman's
00:12:56 going to get that hand.
00:12:57 - That's right.
00:12:58 And your foot is gliding backwards as well.
00:12:59 And you have to take off of a backwards edge.
00:13:02 - So Kirsten, we'll walk you through a lot of these elements
00:13:05 in the replays so you can understand
00:13:06 what some of the features are.
00:13:07 Let's just briefly touch on that.
00:13:10 The degree of difficulty for many of these elements
00:13:12 have four levels of difficulty
00:13:15 and each level has a higher point gain for that.
00:13:19 Of course, that can be countered
00:13:21 by the quality that you perform.
00:13:23 If you have a high level, level four,
00:13:25 but you have done it poor quality,
00:13:26 you have to wonder, was it worth the risk or not?
00:13:29 - Absolutely.
00:13:30 That's definitely a strategy move here.
00:13:32 Teams with their coaches will decide
00:13:34 if it's worth it to go for a level four lift.
00:13:36 If they're not able to complete it
00:13:37 with a high enough grade of execution
00:13:39 that maybe they could if they did just a level three.
00:13:42 There's a single twist by Daria Danilova and Michelle Siva.
00:13:46 Just warming up for their triple
00:13:50 that they'll do a little bit later on in this warmup
00:13:52 and in their free program.
00:13:53 - You love skating.
00:13:56 You really particularly love pairs.
00:13:57 Why is that?
00:13:58 - I do.
00:13:59 I love pairs so much.
00:14:00 And I think one of the biggest
00:14:01 and most important things for me
00:14:03 was experiencing all of these challenges
00:14:06 and exciting moments, the highs and lows with somebody else.
00:14:09 Having a team around me to work through our triumphs
00:14:13 and also our tribulations to experience
00:14:15 some of the best moments of my life with
00:14:17 and also somebody to help me get through the harder ones.
00:14:20 - I guess it really helps you
00:14:21 through the rest of life as well
00:14:22 because life is full of relationships and problem solving.
00:14:26 - That's right.
00:14:27 And so many life skills
00:14:28 and learning how to communicate with another person,
00:14:31 how to be on a team, how to work together.
00:14:34 Nice triple salchow there from Ben.
00:14:35 I always find it interesting to see
00:14:39 if pair teams elect to warm up
00:14:40 their side-by-side jumps together or separately.
00:14:43 - And what did you do?
00:14:44 - You know what?
00:14:45 I did both in my career with my former partner,
00:14:47 Dylan Moscovich.
00:14:48 We warmed them up together
00:14:49 and with Michael Marinaro separately.
00:14:51 I liked separately by the end of my career
00:14:53 because sometimes each team member
00:14:54 needs a different amount of time to feel comfortable
00:14:57 to get those jumps done.
00:14:58 See Brooke here getting into her knees and ankles.
00:15:02 - And we saw a really good performance
00:15:03 from Brooke yesterday.
00:15:04 Something a little bit new, more expression in her face,
00:15:07 more joy in that as well.
00:15:08 Quite a serious competitor, very focused of course.
00:15:11 That was a wonderful change or challenge
00:15:14 that we saw yesterday in the short.
00:15:16 What can we expect here in the free?
00:15:18 - I agree.
00:15:18 I thought that was such an amazing performance
00:15:20 from Brooke.
00:15:22 Program today, a little bit of a different style.
00:15:24 I like this style for them.
00:15:26 We're going to get to take a look in a few minutes.
00:15:28 - And here we go.
00:15:33 Competition number three.

00:15:37 in the Grand Prix number two.
00:15:39 Week number two, it'll move on to Angers, France
00:15:41 for next week.
00:15:42 Really covers the world onto China, then to Finland,
00:15:47 then they'll finish it out in Osaka, Japan.
00:15:50 And here we go.
00:15:53 The first team represents Germany.
00:15:55 Letizia is 19, Lewis is 22.

00:16:05 Silver at German nationals.

00:16:12 Season's best though, 91.44.
00:16:15 First team out.
00:16:18 And they'll skate the free program to Dawn of Faith,

00:20:43 Had some really nice moments.
00:20:45 Beautiful throw triple Sao Cao from Leticia.
00:20:48 - From Germany, Leticia Osho.
00:20:49 - Obviously not a closing lift
00:20:52 that they would have hoped today.
00:20:54 (audience applauding)
00:20:56 - It seemed that some of their individual skating skills
00:20:59 are still under construction,
00:21:00 as most teams are, of course,
00:21:02 but you know, there's the pair skating skills,
00:21:05 and many of them were very good,
00:21:07 and the individual skills, at least on this night.
00:21:09 - That's right.
00:21:10 It was a great triple twist for this team.
00:21:13 They mentioned in an interview yesterday
00:21:14 that they were both injured in the summer,
00:21:16 and Louis still struggling with an injury.
00:21:19 We don't know how that has affected their ability
00:21:21 to train these lifts,
00:21:23 but we're seeing some difficulty on those
00:21:24 at this competition.
00:21:26 Here, the triple twist, nice split from Leticia.
00:21:29 Louis' arms down by his side.
00:21:31 Technical specialists will decide
00:21:35 if that was a clean catch or not.
00:21:37 Hard for us to see from this angle.
00:21:40 Here, throw triple loop.
00:21:41 Leticia's left foot touches the ice,
00:21:45 hoping for a one-foot landing on those throws.
00:21:48 Planned double toe loop, Euler double salchow.
00:21:52 Much lower jump content than we'll see
00:21:55 from the teams to come.
00:21:56 This here is their group five reverse lift.
00:22:01 They enter this lift forwards.
00:22:03 That's a difficult feature this year.
00:22:05 That will count as a difficult takeoff.
00:22:07 Here, their carry, another feature.
00:22:15 - I don't know why we talk about those things so calmly,
00:22:17 but the guys on one foot,
00:22:19 the whole leader above the head,
00:22:20 I don't think it's so calm.

00:50:33 What would you say the difference

00:50:41 What can you tell the fans listening on Smart Bargain?
00:50:44 - Yeah, well, for the most part,
00:50:47 with just a few exceptions,
00:50:48 we'll see mostly the same elements.
00:50:51 The same grade of difficulty in the elements
00:50:53 that we saw in the first group versus the second group.
00:50:55 What we'll see differently here
00:50:57 is the way these elements are performed.
00:50:59 We're looking at more speed,
00:51:01 more difficult transitions into and out of the elements.
00:51:05 Perhaps completed with more confidence.
00:51:08 These teams, some of these teams
00:51:10 will have more difficult programs,
00:51:13 which of course makes the elements
00:51:14 more difficult to complete as well.
00:51:16 And that really is what makes a fantastic pair team.
00:51:19 The team that can have the technical elements

00:51:26 and great skating skills.
00:51:28 - It's interesting you say that.

00:51:32 where the top teams of the world
00:51:34 are at the Olympic Games perhaps,
00:51:37 have a combination of storytelling plus pair skating.
00:51:40 Pair skating elements take a long time to develop.
00:51:43 It's a little less time to story tell,
00:51:45 but the top teams have both.
00:51:47 But it takes a long, long time to learn both, doesn't it?
00:51:49 - Absolutely, and the technical elements will take priority.
00:51:53 It'll take precedence in the order
00:51:54 that you learn these things.
00:51:56 There are a certain number of required elements
00:51:58 that these skaters have to complete.
00:52:00 So they need to show up with these elements.
00:52:02 They can learn the rest a little bit later and as they go.

00:53:38 - We will see the most difficult jumping pass
00:53:40 of the event by this team.
00:53:41 They will attempt a side-by-side triple toe,
00:53:44 triple toe, double toe.
00:53:45 There, their triple twist.

00:53:58 but not so many really.
00:54:00 - No, not so many anymore.
00:54:02 The scale of values has changed
00:54:04 and the number of points that you receive for a quad
00:54:07 is less than it used to be
00:54:08 and skaters are deeming it unnecessary
00:54:11 to take the mental and physical risk
00:54:15 of trying and learning these quads
00:54:16 when they're just not worth enough points.
00:54:18 - Do you think they should be added?
00:54:23 - I think they should be worth considerably more
00:54:26 than they're worth, yeah.
00:54:27 When we see a skater or a team attempt
00:54:30 to throw a quad SaoCao
00:54:32 and maybe land on their feet,
00:54:35 but two-footed landing,
00:54:36 they'll get a negative grade of execution
00:54:38 and they'll receive almost the same number of points
00:54:40 or maybe even less than if they did a throw triple SaoCao
00:54:44 with a positive grade of execution.
00:54:46 And the discrepancy in score there
00:54:48 just doesn't match how much more difficult
00:54:51 the element actually is.
00:54:53 - So wasn't that interesting?
00:54:55 That ripping sound was taped going on the skate.
