00:00:34 We are so thankful that the vast majority of Canadians support Canadian
00:00:39 chicken farmers and the supply management system. When consumers see
00:00:44 the Raised by a Canadian Farmer brand, they can know that that chicken was
00:00:48 raised in a healthy, safe environment. Happy birds are healthy birds and
00:00:54 healthy birds provide a healthy food source for Canadians.

00:06:40 - Welcome live inside the Doug Mitchell Arena here,
00:06:45 Pair Short Program coming up.
00:06:46 Kirsten, you've been watching the practices
00:06:48 for the past couple days, what can we expect?
00:06:51 - You know what, this is bound to be
00:06:52 a really exciting pair event, Ted.
00:06:55 Teams have had great practices today and yesterday,
00:06:59 looking really, really strong.
00:07:00 I'm especially excited to see Canadians,
00:07:02 Deanna Stiletto-Dudek and Maxim Deschamps
00:07:04 really learning, really hoping to assert
00:07:07 their dominance here tonight,
00:07:09 but lots of exciting other teams to watch as well.
00:07:11 - As we take a look at the starting order for this event,
00:07:14 we'd like to welcome the fans live inside the building here
00:07:18 who have the SmartBug radio,
00:07:20 we'll be speaking to you of course,
00:07:21 and also our streaming audience around the world.
00:07:24 Welcome everybody to the broadcast.
00:07:29 Kirsten will bring you sort of an inside look
00:07:34 at the pair discipline.
00:07:35 So fascinating, I always love this
00:07:37 as we take a look at the officials for this event.
00:07:40 Always wonder what it feels like to,
00:07:42 well actually I would never want to try it,
00:07:45 to be at the top of a lift or to be thrown.
00:07:47 You're a thrill seeker, you must be.
00:07:49 - That's right, I think all of these women
00:07:51 down ready to compete here must be thrill seekers
00:07:55 to want to be pair skaters.
00:07:57 This is definitely not for the faint of heart.
00:07:59 Lots of challenging, difficult elements,
00:08:02 lots of timing involved.
00:08:04 These teams have really worked on their craft,
00:08:07 they've earned their place here,
00:08:08 I'm excited to see all of their hard work.
00:08:10 - There they are, just moments away
00:08:12 from stepping onto the ice for their introductions
00:08:14 and moment of excitement and nerves
00:08:16 and you see some smiles on their face
00:08:18 while their brain is still trying to concentrate
00:08:20 on what's to come, but also the joy of being there.
00:08:23 - Absolutely, they're no doubt feeling the adrenaline,
00:08:26 excited to go, here they come.
00:08:29 - And I asked this of Caitlin Weaver in the ice dance,
00:08:33 did you like the introductions at center ice?
00:08:36 - I loved it, I didn't understand anyone who didn't love it,
00:08:39 it's an extra minute to feel the ice
00:08:41 before the six minute starts.
00:08:43 - Yeah, no jumps allowed.
00:08:46 - That's right.
00:08:47 - From Canada, Kellyanne Lohan and Yuta Ito.
00:08:52 - First Canadian team, Kellyanne Lohan and Yuta Ito.
00:08:56 - From Germany, Letizia Osho and Louis Schifter.
00:09:00 - Letizia and Louis from Germany.
00:09:03 - From Hungary, Maria Tartova and Alexey.
00:09:07 - Maria and Alexey from Hungary.
00:09:09 - Caterers, you have six minutes for your warmup.
00:09:14 - So let's talk about and educate
00:09:18 or help the live audience here
00:09:20 and the audience back at home as well.
00:09:23 What are, out of all the elements,
00:09:24 and it can be different for each team,
00:09:26 the most difficult or riskiest element in the short program?
00:09:30 - Oh gosh, I think you're right,
00:09:32 it really will depend on the strength of each of these teams
00:09:34 but I think often in pair skating,
00:09:36 we do see mistakes on the side by side jumps.
00:09:39 These teams will be looking to cleanly execute
00:09:41 these side by side jumps with positive,
00:09:44 a positive rate of execution and that will be crucial
00:09:47 for them to find themselves in the top group
00:09:49 heading into the free program tomorrow.
00:09:51 - Yeah, and the positive rate of execution
00:09:53 for those of the fans here in the building
00:09:55 that don't know what that is,
00:09:56 that is the quality of the execution of the element.
00:09:59 So there are seven technical elements
00:10:01 and each one of those elements
00:10:03 will be judged on the difficulty, of course,
00:10:05 that's the technical panel,
00:10:06 and the quality, that's the GOE,
00:10:09 of the element, how well it was executed,
00:10:11 what mistakes were there?
00:10:12 - We'll see seven elements from these teams today.
00:10:17 Each team will execute a double or triple twist.
00:10:20 That is often the element that we see first
00:10:23 in the short program and free program.
00:10:24 Reason for that being,
00:10:26 it is so physically and mentally demanding.
00:10:29 Teams will want to get that done and out of the way.
00:10:31 We'll also see a side by side jump, any double or triple.
00:10:35 We will see most teams here today
00:10:37 attempt a side by side triple jump.
00:10:39 We'll see a throw, any double or triple throw
00:10:41 of their choice, a group three lift.
00:10:45 There are several different groups of lifts.
00:10:46 A group three simply means the man lifts the woman
00:10:49 by placing his hand on her hip.
00:10:52 Any hand to hip lift is a group three lift.
00:10:55 We also will see the forward inside death spiral,
00:10:58 the side by side change combo spin, and the step sequence.
00:11:02 - Well done, excellent.
00:11:03 I wanted to ask about the most difficult element for you.
00:11:08 I mean, you talked about the twist,
00:11:10 and that was so interesting,
00:11:10 because in the Junior Grand Prix,
00:11:12 we always saw the twist first.
00:11:13 I always wonder why it's always first.
00:11:14 Is it mandatory?
00:11:15 Of course not, but why?
00:11:17 - Oh gosh, for me, the twist was the most difficult.
00:11:21 Some teams here, we're about to see one
00:11:22 by Leticia and Louis beautifully executed triple twist there.
00:11:26 There really is such a precise timing involved
00:11:29 between both the man and the woman.
00:11:31 It is crucial and critical that both members do their job
00:11:35 to execute that well.
00:11:36 - And you said psychologically it's difficult.
00:11:39 - Oh gosh, for some.
00:11:40 For me, certainly, it was psychologically so difficult.
00:11:44 I'm really excited about this team, Ted.
00:11:48 Maria and Alexei are relatively new.
00:11:50 It's their second season together.
00:11:52 They technically are so fantastic.
00:11:56 They're proving me right
00:11:58 by executing a beautiful throw triple flip.
00:12:01 - Relatively new team?
00:12:05 - Relatively new.
00:12:05 Last year was their first season together,
00:12:07 and I believe they were seventh at Worlds last year, Ted.
00:12:10 Really great showing.
00:12:12 Really great technical elements.
00:12:13 Some of the best in the world.
00:12:14 They'll continue to work on their skating skills to improve.
00:12:17 Here, Matteo and Lucrezia.
00:12:20 Matteo has a great story as well.
00:12:22 He is a multiple-time Olympian
00:12:24 with a former partner, Nicole Dellamonica.
00:12:27 His new partner, Lucrezia, their second season together.
00:12:30 They have made such huge strides in the off-season.
00:12:33 Throw triple loop there, really well done.
00:12:37 - And what would you say is the main ingredient,
00:12:41 or one of the main ingredients,
00:12:42 that you need to be a female para skater?
00:12:45 I mean, obviously, you have to be a good single skater,
00:12:48 but it takes something a little special.
00:12:52 - You're right, I think there's a certain fight
00:12:54 that these para skaters have, especially the women.
00:12:57 They are completing, we said a little bit earlier,
00:13:00 really, I mean, let's be honest,
00:13:03 scary things for the general public, I think.
00:13:06 And they have them done with such ease.
00:13:08 Important to note,
00:13:09 these skaters all start at the grassroots level.
00:13:12 There is a really safe way.
00:13:14 Throw triple loop for Kellyanne and Luca.
00:13:16 Slight touchdown.
00:13:17 There's a safe way to start these elements
00:13:19 and to slowly build up to this level.
00:13:21 - And what element, I think it was the twist,
00:13:24 is the most scary for you, right?
00:13:25 - For me, personally, yes.
00:13:26 - But what else?
00:13:27 Was there anything else that,
00:13:28 or was there a time that it didn't seem scary anymore?
00:13:31 - Absolutely, yeah.
00:13:32 I think working with coaching team, our coaching team,
00:13:35 it was so crucial to find an avenue
00:13:37 that made it a little bit less mentally daunting,
00:13:39 because it is mandatory.
00:13:40 You do need to do it,
00:13:41 and of course, when you wanna be among the best in the world,
00:13:45 you have to get that job done.
00:13:47 (upbeat music)
00:13:49 - Pretty straight to the point.
00:13:50 - Yeah.
00:13:51 (laughing)
00:13:54 - Pair skating is such a beautiful,
00:13:58 it's beautiful, it's dynamic, it's risky.
00:14:00 It has so many aspects that,
00:14:03 and the interesting thing is the top pair teams
00:14:06 in the world, either at Olympics or World,
00:14:08 always have something a little special.
00:14:09 I don't wanna say dance, a flavor of dance to it,
00:14:11 but a flavor of storytelling as well.
00:14:14 - Absolutely. - Which is hard,
00:14:15 because it just takes so long to set up.
00:14:17 - That's right.
00:14:17 That is a challenging aspect of pair skating.
00:14:21 The elements do have longer setups,
00:14:23 so it really becomes crucial that the time in between
00:14:25 you use to the best of your ability to tell your story.
00:14:29 - I know the last few years,
00:14:31 you and Michael had some beautiful stories.
00:14:33 - Thank you. - They were wonderful.
00:14:35 And it must have added to the enjoyment of the program.
00:14:37 - Absolutely, absolutely.
00:14:38 It was my favorite part.
00:14:40 I always find it interesting to watch a pair warm up
00:14:43 and see how teams strategize how they'll do their warm up.
00:14:46 We see here a lot of the teams separate.
00:14:49 We're in the last minute of warm up.
00:14:51 They're getting into their knees and ankles.
00:14:53 Some teams will elect to stay together
00:14:55 the whole six minutes.
00:14:56 It really is up to the teams and their coaching team
00:15:00 in figuring out what works the best for them.
00:15:03 - And for you, what works the best for you?
00:15:04 - I like to spend some time on my own as well.
00:15:06 Our first team here getting their final words
00:15:11 of encouragement.
00:15:13 - Not much in the senior category.
00:15:16 There's not a lot of coaching at that point.
00:15:19 And the juniors are a little bit more for sure.
00:15:21 - Absolutely.
00:15:22 - We get started here in the Para-Shore program.
00:15:26 Week number two on the Grand Prix series.
00:15:28 Still very early in the season,
00:15:34 but those six weeks on this series will go by very quickly.
00:15:36 - Oh, once they start, they're over before you know it.
00:15:39 (announcer speaking in foreign language)
00:15:44 - Please welcome the first competitor.

00:19:31 Beautiful clean skate to start this pair short program.
00:19:34 - I have to ask you how hard it is
00:19:36 to have unison in the Southwest Ice Skating
00:19:39 because they had great unison to start.
00:19:41 - You know what, it is one of the hardest things.
00:19:43 It seems so simple.
00:19:44 It is so challenging to keep the spin in unison
00:19:46 from the start to the very end, including the exit.
00:19:49 Thought they did a great job with that.
00:19:51 They were, sorry, Ted.
00:19:54 They were all business
00:19:55 through the first four elements I found.
00:19:57 They completed these elements very cleanly, very well done.
00:20:00 I am especially impressed with their improvement
00:20:02 on their twist in the off season,
00:20:04 but we do see a little bit of that newness
00:20:06 in how business-like they approach
00:20:09 those four first difficult elements,
00:20:11 which is not a bad thing.
00:20:12 It's somewhere for them to grow.
00:20:14 - Well, yeah, and we talked about those special pair teams
00:20:16 that have a story or have a feeling,
00:20:18 and that will take time to develop
00:20:20 once they're really confident on the technical elements
00:20:22 as they come off the ice with a smile on the face
00:20:25 and a little fist bump there as well.
00:20:27 - So nice to see that reaction.
00:20:29 - There's their coach, Luca,
00:20:32 greeting them as they come off the ice.
00:20:34 - Mateo really has been around for so long.
00:20:37 He still loves skating.
00:20:38 - Look at this beautiful height.
00:20:39 Clean catch on that triple twist.
00:20:41 Earning them a level three.
00:20:44 Side-by-side triple toes here.
00:20:48 Slightly off timing maybe, but that's really being picky.
00:20:53 So beautifully done.
00:20:55 And here, their throw triple loop.
00:20:56 She was a little outside the circle,
00:20:58 but did such an amazing job to get that free leg back
00:21:02 with confidence and a smile.
00:21:04 Here, the group three lift.
00:21:05 There's their entry.
00:21:07 (gentle music)
00:21:09 And the change of position.
00:21:11 Lucrezia grabbing her foot, two revs on one arm,
00:21:14 and the difficult exit, level four.
00:21:16 Forward inside desk bar,
00:21:19 a beautiful position by Lucrezia.
00:21:21 Also achieving a level four, the highest level.
00:21:28 And the end of that beautiful
00:21:34 side-by-side change combination spin.
00:21:37 - I wanna ask you about the position
00:21:39 for the women in the air.
00:21:40 You have to be absolutely solid and not move at all, correct?
00:21:43 - That's correct.
00:21:44 A little bit of humor there.
00:21:47 Yes, and so much core strength is involved, for sure.
00:21:50 - Crystal Best, 66.94.
00:21:55 Just shy of that with a 65.83.
00:21:57 They look pretty happy, so the ears are flapping there.

01:06:17 Sustaining that landing position.
01:06:21 Here they're group three lift.
01:06:22 Hector's hand starting on Anastasia's hip.
01:06:25 And at a level three, if I was guessing,
01:06:30 I think he was short on his one hand.
01:06:32 But again, I'm not a technical specialist,
01:06:35 nor do I wish to be.
01:06:36 Here they're forward inside Desparo.
01:06:38 We talked about the woman's head in the position.
01:06:41 We also need to see the man's buttocks below his hip
01:06:45 at a 90 degree angle or lower.
01:06:47 - I was always wondering how to say that,
01:06:50 but you did it very well.
01:06:52 - I wasn't sure.
01:06:53 - Everyone.
01:06:55 Great job.
01:06:58 - Far from home.
01:06:59 - Yeah, a great debut into the senior ranks.
01:07:01 - Anastasia Kolubeva and Hector Chetopulos.
01:07:06 62.80, and that is second in the short program so far
01:07:10 with one team to come.
01:07:12 Great job.
01:07:13 Good transition from junior to senior.
01:07:16 - Yeah, fantastic.
01:07:17 They can be so proud of that.
01:07:18 They were first in the short at the Shanghai Trophy
01:07:22 a couple weeks ago,
01:07:23 so no stranger to leading after the short.
01:07:25 I guess they're not leading.
01:07:28 Close.
01:07:29 - Our final team, well, represents Canada.
01:07:34 40 year old Deanna Stiletto Dudek,
01:07:36 31 year old Maxime Deschamps,
01:07:38 coached by Jose Picard, choreographed by Julie Marcotte.
01:07:42 Quite an extraordinary story and an extraordinary team.
01:07:47 Fourth in the world last year.
01:07:49 - They'd like to move up.
01:07:50 One more, two more, maybe three more steps,
01:07:55 and they're on a mission to do so.
01:07:56 Looking to beat their 71.80 personal best this season.
01:08:01 (heavy breathing)
01:08:05 (heavy breathing)
01:08:08 (upbeat music)
01:08:18 (upbeat music)
01:08:20 (singing in foreign language)
01:08:42 (upbeat music)
01:08:44 (upbeat music)
01:08:57 (singing in foreign language)
01:09:09 (upbeat music)
01:09:12 (upbeat music)
01:09:38 (upbeat music)
01:09:41 (upbeat music)
01:09:43 (audience applauding)
01:10:03 (upbeat music)
01:10:07 (upbeat music)
01:10:09 (singing in foreign language)
01:10:31 (upbeat music)
01:10:33 (heavy breathing)
01:10:48 (audience applauding)
01:11:01 - Wow.
01:11:01 - They're incredible, they really are.
01:11:05 - That was, wow, standing ovation here,
01:11:09 the Deaf Mutual Thunderbird Sports Center deserves.
01:11:12 I have no notes.
01:11:14 You know when we watch practice,
01:11:17 or when I watch practice, I take notes about what I see,
01:11:21 what maybe I'd like to see, what I'd like to talk about,
01:11:23 and I looked to my notes from their practice this morning,
01:11:26 and I quite literally wrote nothing down.
01:11:29 I just watched.
01:11:31 - Well, you were totally focused
01:11:33 and engaged in that performance,
01:11:35 and they were so solid throughout.
01:11:37 - Yeah, we talk about their story a lot.
01:11:40 We talk about Deanna's story a lot.
01:11:42 She is incredible.
01:11:44 Max, too, has a story of perseverance.
01:11:47 Truly loves to skate.
01:11:50 They've found great partners in each other here.
01:11:51 This is huge.
01:11:53 Split, Max's arms go down by his side.
01:11:56 Lean catch.
01:11:59 In at a level four.
01:12:00 Actually, every element is in at a level four.
01:12:03 Really nice side-by-side triple toe loops.
01:12:08 I love this music for them.
01:12:13 Hear their group free lift.
01:12:16 Really interesting position here.
01:12:18 Something different.
01:12:20 Julie Marcotte told me they chose this music,
01:12:24 like we said earlier, four worlds in Montreal.
01:12:29 Nice little triple loop.
01:12:30 A little bit lower in the landing
01:12:32 than she was in the warmup,
01:12:33 but what a fighter to hold onto it.
01:12:35 Innovative entrance into this dust spiral.
01:12:39 This music really gets me excited from the beginning,
01:12:47 and I think it highlights their strong technical elements.
01:12:50 They spend so much time working
01:12:53 with an off-ice dance coach,
01:12:55 working with an acting coach,
01:12:57 working with Julie.
01:12:59 It's paying off, we can see it.
01:13:00 - Well, you talked about their focus
01:13:02 on moving up to the top,
01:13:04 and so they've done the work.
01:13:06 They have more work to come,
01:13:08 but they're well on their way.
01:13:09 We'll see.
01:13:10 - Deanna Stelar,
01:13:11 - Short program score for Deanna and Maxime.
01:13:14 Season's best, 72.25.
01:13:16 And that puts them,
01:13:19 after the short program, in the lead.
01:13:23 They spoke about wanting to be in the mid-70s
01:13:26 in the short program,
01:13:27 probably what we're seeing on Deanna's face.
01:13:29 - Yes, I know, I was just saying that.
01:13:32 Okay, she's happy that she's first,
01:13:33 but wants more points.
01:13:35 - You know what?
01:13:37 There's something nice about seeing everything
01:13:41 a person is thinking.
01:13:42 There's nothing fake there.
01:13:43 - No, it's all real.
01:13:44 Deanna and Maxime in the lead.
01:13:46 Lucrezia and Natia from Italy in second,
01:13:49 Anastasia and Hector in third from Australia.
01:13:53 And look at the rest of the field.
01:13:55 - Great event today.
01:13:58 - It was really good.
01:13:59 - Players showed up.
01:14:00 - It's pretty close.
01:14:00 I mean, lots can happen because there's lots of elements
01:14:03 that, when I say at risk, that mistakes can happen,
01:14:06 things can switch.
01:14:07 - Absolutely.
01:14:08 And I want to note too,
01:14:10 the viewers can't necessarily compare short program scores
01:14:14 from last season to this season
01:14:15 for the reason that the elements required
01:14:17 have a lower base value this year.
01:14:20 So we're not looking at apples to apples here.
01:14:22 The scores will vary a little bit.
01:14:24 - Very good point.
01:14:27 We're going to wait for the replays of the top three teams
01:14:30 to work our way through that.
01:14:32 As we see Nam Nguyen, former Canadian champion,
01:14:35 junior world champion on the ice.
01:14:37 Raising heck here in the building.
01:14:42 - As per usual.
01:14:43 - Exactly.
01:14:44 Take a look, take us through this.
01:14:45 - Anastasia and Hector showing us the opening
01:14:48 of their short program here.
01:14:50 Third place after the short program.
01:14:51 They can be so proud of that.
01:14:53 Here, their triple twist.
01:14:56 Into their side by side triple toes.
01:15:02 Last season, we saw this team do it side by side,
01:15:04 triple toe, triple toe.
01:15:06 The only ones to do it.
01:15:07 Beautiful triple loop.
01:15:09 And finishing with a super in sync side by side
01:15:14 chin chin knife spin.
01:15:15 Here, one of the veterans in this event,
01:15:21 Matteo Gorise, found a fantastic partner
01:15:24 in Lucrezia Beccari.
01:15:26 Nice height on that triple twist.
01:15:29 Nice catch too.
01:15:30 This was such a great way to open this event.
01:15:35 - Lucrezia in junior is one of my favorite single skaters.
01:15:40 She won the Grand Prix when I saw her.
01:15:41 - Oh, I didn't know that.
01:15:44 Well, that's cool.
01:15:44 She's made a great transition to pair skating.
01:15:48 I wonder which she likes more.
01:15:50 - Yeah, that'd be interesting.
01:15:52 - Deanna Stiletto-Dudek, Maxime Deschamps.
01:15:55 Julie said they connected very easily to this music.
01:16:00 Right away, really liked it.
01:16:02 I think they've made a great choice.
01:16:04 Huge triple twist.
01:16:05 Nice side by side triple toe loops.
01:16:14 And right into their throw triple loop.
01:16:19 As I said, slightly deeper in the knee.
01:16:22 I love the intricacy of their arms
01:16:28 and their arm movements in that desk barrel.
01:16:30 That will contribute to their positive grade
01:16:32 of execution for sure.
01:16:33 - That was awesome.
01:16:36 - And you see, there's no surprise for them
01:16:37 when they skate clean.
01:16:38 They're just nodding their heads.
01:16:40 - Yeah, absolutely.
01:16:41 Well, that concludes our coverage of the ParaSure program.
01:16:43 Up next will be the final event of the day,
01:16:45 the Men's Short Program.
01:16:46 That'll start in just about 15 minutes.
01:16:48 We hope you'll join us for that.
01:16:50 For Christian Borg-Towers and all of us here
01:16:53 at Skate Canada Productions, thank you for watching.
01:16:55 Hope you'll join us for the Men's Short.
01:16:57 (crowd cheering)
01:17:00 (crowd cheering)
01:17:03 (rooster crowing)
