00:00 The Italian city of Milan woke up Tuesday morning to this.
00:04 Torrential rain and a violent storm in the early hours caused the river Seveso, which
00:08 flows under the city, to overflow.
00:10 Local authorities say they are building huge vats underground to catch the floodwaters,
00:15 but other cities in the Lombardia region are not so prepared.
00:20 It is clear that we have not seen such floods since 2014.
00:24 This tells us that it is necessary to work on the vats.
00:28 The one in Milan is ready.
00:30 They are doing the last tests of the pumps.
00:32 It will be in service by the end of November.
00:34 But all those in the Lombardia region are missing.
00:37 According to the Italian Met Office, 45 millimeters of rain fell on Milan between midnight and 7.30 am.
00:44 Five regions in the north of the country have orange weather warnings in place,
00:48 while Veneto is on red alert.
00:50 But meteorologists say the stormy weather will soon ease before moving south,
00:54 which is still experiencing an unusually hot autumn.
