Hunt Palmer discusses his best Alabama LSU memories
Transcript
00:00 I'll say this for the folks that pull for the tide.
00:03 I have never in my life been in a stadium with as much pregame electricity
00:09 as the 2011 game in Tuscaloosa ever.
00:12 From the ridiculous amount of celebrities on the sideline,
00:15 that place was absolutely full 45 minutes to an hour before kickoff.
00:20 I've never seen that.
00:21 I've seen Tiger Stadium at its absolute best.
00:23 And it's fantastic.
00:24 And it was great the next year in 2012 until the Yeldon screen passed.
00:28 And it's phenomenal.
00:29 But that was undefeated on undefeated.
00:32 It was one versus two.
00:33 It was as big as it can get at that point in the schedule.
00:36 And I was on the field for overtime because I was writing at the time.
00:40 And I was in the press box.
00:41 So that was an unbelievable memory that I have.
00:44 On the flip side, like I said, that next year
00:46 was the same type of environment.
00:48 It was a revenge spot for LSU.
00:49 But the Tigers had already lost.
00:51 So it wasn't quite the same.
00:52 But they played so well in the second half.
00:53 And then to have McCarron and Yeldon rip the heart out at the end was tough.
00:58 I'll tell you, I go obviously to every home game
01:02 because I do the pre and post game for radio.
01:04 But we don't travel to road games.
01:06 But I'm obviously at all the home games.
01:08 I did not go to LSU in Alabama last year.
01:10 My cousin got married.
01:12 So I was in New Orleans.
01:14 I was watching the game in the church on my phone.
01:17 And then at the reception, I was watching it on the TV
01:22 down at the reception venue in Alabama.
01:23 LSU wins in overtime.
01:25 And I went back up to the dance floor.
01:26 And I got another beverage.
01:28 And my aunt came up.
01:29 Her daughter had gotten married.
01:30 And she was like, I'm so sorry you weren't there.
01:32 And I was like, Aunt Nancy, we won.
01:34 I'm good.
01:35 The bar is open.
01:36 Thank you very much.
01:37 So a little bit of a different memory from that perspective.
01:40 But yeah, this has been the most important game
01:43 on the schedule for 15 years.
01:45 And people, especially in the Les Miles era in Baton Rouge,
01:48 criticized the program for building this game up too much.
01:53 And then if you lost, you might lose to Arkansas the next week
01:55 because you felt like the wind was out of your sails
01:57 or the team played tight.
01:58 I want to go, you know what?
02:00 At LSU, if you're going to accomplish any of your goals
02:04 in this format, where there's a four-team playoff or a two-team
02:07 BCS, and you're in the division with them,
02:10 you have to win the game.
02:11 The kids aren't stupid.
02:13 Game day is coming.
02:14 CBS Pixar is the only primetime game.
02:16 You're talking to Kerp Herbstreet on Thursday.
02:18 They're not dumb.
02:19 It is a really big deal.
02:21 And I laughed when A&M in 2020 said, hey,
02:24 we should be in the playoff.
02:25 I'm like, no.
02:26 If you're in the SEC West, which you decided to come join,
02:29 and you don't beat Alabama, which you lost by 20 that year,
02:32 you don't get to do anything else.
02:33 Like, go have fun somewhere else.
02:35 You're not playing for a championship.
02:37 So it's a big deal.
02:38 It's a huge game.
02:39 I don't know what the future of it
02:40 is in terms of how the scheduling sets up.
02:42 But it's been something for the last--
