00:09 Welcome to this week's Goldmouth Action Podcast where we take a look at all
00:12 the latest games on the Brighton, Hove Abbey, Crawley Town and Sporting Sussex.
00:17 I'm Matt Poul and I'm joined by Crawley Town expert Mark Dunford as well as
00:20 Sam Morton who covers both Brighton, Hove Abbey and the Reds.
00:23 The Seagulls were held to a 1-0 draw at home to Friday amid a torrential downpour
00:27 on Sunday afternoon.
00:28 We'll pick over the bones of Abbey and score against the Whites and
00:31 reflect on yet another tumultuous week at Crawley Town.
00:34 You can read all the stories we're talking about with videos and
00:37 pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk/sport.
00:40 And you can check out other great videos on shotsdv.com and

00:45 Evan Ferguson gave Brighton a deserved first half lead against Fulham before
00:49 Gilles Paulini struck back for the visitors in the second half.
00:52 Sum that result up for us, Sam, how would you rate that performance?
00:57 Yeah, it was a good performance for Brighton but not the result they wanted or
01:01 deserved really.
01:03 And Roberto De Serbi was really frustrated after the game that they didn't manage to
01:08 seal the three points because they're in a bit of a winless run at the moment.
01:12 They haven't won since the game over Bournemouth at the end of September.
01:16 So it's been quite a while since they've won in the league.
01:19 So it was a game that De Serbi really wanted to win.
01:21 He said after the Ajax game that they really need to follow that up with a winner
01:25 over Fulham.
01:26 And it started really well.
01:27 It was a great goal from Evan Ferguson who ended his kind of mini goal drought.
01:31 It was a real instinctive finish that kind of showed his class really.
01:35 And you just felt they needed to add to that, get a second goal and a third one and
01:39 just kill the game.
01:40 But all the while that it was 1-0, it was always a danger, always a danger that Fulham
01:45 could get back into it.
01:47 And they obviously did.
01:48 They scored a cracking goal at the beginning of the second half and Brighton weren't able
01:53 to retake the lead.
01:54 And a really frustrating result really at home against a team that they really wanted
01:59 to be or should be beating if they're going to stake a claim for the top five, top six
02:04 again.
02:05 Well, post-match Roberto De Serbi said Albion lost two points against Fulham.
02:09 And by the sound of it, Sam, it sounds as if you agree with that assessment.
02:12 Yeah, no, 100 percent.
02:14 I agree with that.
02:15 Yeah, I think as De Serbi said, they were the best team for 90 percent, at least 90
02:20 percent of the game.
02:21 And they really should have taken the three points when you look at the whole performance.
02:26 I think De Serbi said that it was really just a one, five to ten minute period of the game.
02:32 They kind of lost control and Imboliba was struggling and he lost the ball and he was
02:35 obviously punished.
02:36 And Fulham were obviously ruthless, didn't have too many opportunities.
02:39 But when it came, they took it.
02:41 But obviously there was a bit of controversy as well with Jal Pellinio, the goalscorer,
02:47 not seeing red earlier in the game for a Nelbo and Pascal Gros.
02:50 So there's an argument that that potentially had a big impact on the game.
02:54 De Serbi didn't really want to get kind of involved in that discussion.
02:58 He just wanted to concentrate on the performance, obviously.
03:01 Understandably, a bit inside, he must have been really angry about that decision.
03:06 You've also mentioned there that Albin now wins in four in the Premier League off the
03:10 back of that draw with Fulham.
03:12 I know that obviously De Serbi has been a magician while he's been at the club, but
03:15 should the Seagulls supporters be concerned at this run of form?
03:19 I wouldn't say concerned.
03:21 I think it's just getting used to playing multiple compositions, I think.
03:25 It's obviously all very new to the players.
03:27 De Serbi is still trying to find his best team.
03:30 He's obviously made a lot of changes throughout the season.
03:33 So it's all very new for the players, trying to adjust to playing on a Thursday and a Sunday.
03:39 So yeah, I think it's going to take time to gel and for everything to fall into place.
03:44 I wouldn't say there's any room for concern.
03:47 I think the defence has definitely improved in the last couple of games.
03:50 Obviously, first clean sheet of the season against Ajax, which is brilliant.
03:54 And if it wasn't for that cracking goal from Jal Padinhu, it could have been another clean
03:57 sheet at the weekend as well.
03:58 So I think there's definitely signs of improving defensively.
04:02 And they need to just find that balance between playing on a Thursday, playing on a Sunday,
04:07 just keeping that same level of performance.
04:11 You mentioned there that defence needs or has improved in recent weeks.
04:14 Are there any other areas of Brighton's play that needs improvement?
04:18 Are there obvious signs of improvement that De Serbi needs to implement going ahead?
04:23 I think the loss of Moises Caicedo is still big.
04:28 I think some of the goals that have been conceded this season I don't think would have happened
04:32 if he was there.
04:34 I think Baleed is still settling into the role.
04:36 I think he's had a mixed bag really of performances so far.
04:40 I think one game he looks fantastic and the next he hasn't looked as
04:44 good.
04:45 I think it's just time.
04:48 He needs time to really settle into the team and to fill the boots of Caicedo.
04:52 And there's obviously a huge gap in the team that was left.
04:54 So I think there's some work that needs to be done there, I think, in terms of getting
04:58 him to his best really and to fill that role to his full potential.
05:03 And obviously this means a lot of injuries.
05:06 A big problem at left back this season.
05:08 Pervez is being out for a while now.
05:10 His replacement's Sodhi March getting a serious injury.
05:13 So I think they might want to look in January transfer market to get someone in at left
05:18 back potentially.
05:19 Obviously Lamptey's not being reliable because he's been injured quite a lot already.
05:23 He's brilliant when he plays and then he's out for a while after.
05:26 So I think definitely need to maybe focus on getting someone in at left back and try
05:31 and bolster those positions as well.
05:33 And also on the player front as well, I've seen today that Jason Steele, the goalkeeper,
05:36 has signed a new contract to Brighton.
05:38 Are you surprised about that considering Bart Verbruegen, although he hasn't started in
05:42 recent weeks, has kind of been lauded as the future of Brighton's goalkeeping department?
05:46 Yeah, I mean, the goalkeeping situation is quite confusing, really.
05:49 I think it's a strange one.
05:52 Obviously, you never really know who he's going to choose from game to game.
05:54 And I've always said that I think teams do benefit from having one goalkeeper you can
06:00 rely on.
06:01 You know who's going to play and you can build the team around how they play.
06:03 And I don't necessarily think changing them frequently could help.
06:07 Obviously, who am I to say that?
06:09 But I think it's a tricky one.
06:12 It's a tricky one, I think.
06:13 But I think Jason Steele has done a really good job.
06:17 Obviously, he was favoured over Robert Sanchez last season and that's when Sanchez moved
06:22 to Chelsea.
06:23 And now he's obviously been rotating that role with Bart Verbruegen.
06:26 And I wouldn't say either player has been outstanding so far this season.
06:30 They've both had good moments and some poor moments.
06:33 But yeah, it's an interesting one.
06:35 Obviously, he's shown his faith in Steele on more than one occasion.
06:39 I think he does love him as a player and he really does suit his playing style.
06:42 So no, I wouldn't say I'm surprised he's given him a new contract.
06:45 But it will be interesting to see how the season goes on, if he's going to remain as
06:51 the 50/50 part one or if he's going to start bringing in Verbruegen to play more often
06:55 as he gets more experienced.
06:57 I was going to ask you that.
06:58 Would you like De Zerby to just come out and say, 'This is my number one goalkeeper of
07:02 this season.
07:03 No more rotation.'
07:05 Because surely that must breed a little bit of uncertainty, a defence not knowing who
07:09 you're going to be playing in front of.
07:10 Yeah, no, I agree.
07:12 Absolutely.
07:13 I would like to see that.
07:14 I would like to see him decide on one that will play, even if it's one that will play
07:18 in the league and one that will play in Europe.
07:21 Even then you know kind of what to expect, you know how to prepare for the games.
07:25 I think that would be a good way forward.
07:26 I think De Zerby did say at the start of the season that he felt Jason Steele deserved
07:30 to be in Europe because he helped Brighton to achieve that historic kind of achievement
07:36 in the club.
07:37 But he then said Verbruegen also deserved to be because that's part of the reason why
07:42 he joined the club, because of being in Europe.
07:44 So he felt he kind of had a responsibility to give both players minutes in Europe.
07:48 So I think that does play on his mind a little bit, trying to do what's best for the players
07:53 and trying to make them happy.
07:56 And I guess that has worked.
07:58 You see how much the players love him and how much they want to do their best for him.
08:02 You can't really argue against that.
08:04 I think maybe he does have to be ruthless if he wants to get the best out of them this
08:08 season and really try and get some more clean sheets.
08:11 Because obviously one clean sheet this season is obviously not ideal.
08:14 I think he could help just having a goalkeeper that you can trust and rely on to be the number
08:19 one and the defence will obviously benefit from that as well.
08:23 Going back to the Brighton v Fulham game, in the BBC's post-match write-up they said
08:27 the Seagulls were struggling to compete on multiple fronts and fatigue and rotation could
08:32 be starting to take their toll as they compete in Europe.
08:35 You've kind of touched on it a little bit already, Sam, but is there any truth to this?
08:39 It does kind of seem a little bit hyperbolic, in my opinion, what the BBC Sport have said.
08:44 Yes, I don't think it's been a huge issue in terms of that.
08:47 It doesn't look like the players have been fatigued as such.
08:50 Obviously there's been constant changes to the team, so constantly new players playing
08:55 on Thursday to Sunday.
08:57 So in that respect you'd expect them to be fresh and ready to play.
09:01 I think it's just time to get used to playing because there's only been three games they've
09:05 played in Europe so far.
09:06 So I think it's very early doors.
09:09 I think it's just a matter of time really before they get used to it and you can start
09:14 to see better performances in the league to benefit from that as well.
09:19 Pascal Gros, he reached a notable milestone on Sunday.
09:22 Der Kaiser, as he's affectionately known, notched up his 200th Premier League appearance
09:26 to Brighton against Fulham.
09:28 Where does Gros rank among Albion's greats?
09:30 The £3 million that Albion paid for him all the way back in 2017 looks like the steal
09:34 of the century now, doesn't it?
09:36 Absolutely, yes.
09:37 He's a club legend.
09:38 He's right up there with one of the very best signings they've ever made, 100%.
09:42 It's incredible really to think how much Brighton have changed since they promoted to the Premier
09:46 League and he's been that ever-present man in the team.
09:49 He can play pretty much anywhere on the pitch.
09:51 He's so versatile, so reliable.
09:53 He barely puts a foot wrong.
09:55 He does a croy of turn in every single game, so he's reliable in that sense as well.
10:00 But he's a fantastic player and it's excellent that he stayed because I think there was a
10:05 time a few years ago where he was considering leaving.
10:07 I remember doing an interview after the game where it didn't sound like he was going to
10:11 be at the club for much longer.
10:14 I think a real kind of turning point moment, that one, where he kind of committed his future
10:18 to the club.
10:19 It's so brilliant that he did really and so great the club managed to convince him to
10:24 stay because he was a huge part of them getting to Europe.
10:27 And obviously he's got his international caps as well as a result.
10:30 So yeah, brilliant player and hopefully he stays until the end of his career.
10:35 Looking ahead to the future, this Saturday sees Albion travel to a resurgent Everton
10:39 in the Premier League.
10:40 How do you see this one playing out, Sam?
10:41 I've noticed that the Toffees have won three of their last five in the Premier League,
10:44 so it's another tricky, tricky assignment for the Seagulls.
10:47 Yeah, a really tough game against Everton that have had a couple of good performances.
10:52 They did decent against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, obviously hard done by VAR on the day.
10:59 And they followed that up with a great win over West Ham.
11:02 So they're in a good little run of form.
11:05 Sean Dyche is not a manager that Everton might come up against.
11:09 They've never had that much joy against him.
11:11 So it's a really tough game.
11:13 I think obviously last season they had the biggest defeat of the season, was it, at the
11:16 Amex when Everton just ran riot.
11:20 So they want to put that behind them.
11:22 I think they need an early goal.
11:23 I think the longer the game is nil-nil, or even if Everton get the lead, they're so good
11:29 at defending that, so good at putting men behind the ball and keeping hold of what they
11:33 have.
11:34 So I think Brighton really do need to start on the front foot, get an early goal, and
11:37 then Everton will then have to come out and try and get an equaliser.
11:40 That's when you can maybe hit them and seal the game.
11:42 So a really tough game for Brighton.
11:44 But again, they really, really should be winning after such a long time without winning the
11:48 league.
11:49 So it'd be a good way to get back up and running again.
11:51 Brilliant.
11:52 Thank you very much for that, Sam.
11:53 We're going to take a short break.
11:55 When we come back, we'll be discussing Althring's Crawley Town.
11:59 Saturday saw Crawley Town go down 2-1 at struggling Forest Green Rovers, but the majority of the
12:03 talk this week has surrounded the future of Reds boss Scott Lindsay.
12:07 Mark, if you can, can you give us a little lowdown on the story and the speculation that's
12:12 been swirling around Broadfield Stadium this week?
12:16 Well, yeah, it's been a funny old week because I was actually on holiday last week and I
12:23 came back to just, I didn't know what was going on.
12:26 But yeah, so Gillingham, they obviously sacked Neil Harris at the beginning of October.
12:34 And initially, straight away, Scott Lindsay was connected with the move just because Scott
12:37 Lindsay lives in Kent.
12:38 He lives, he's played for Gillingham.
12:39 He's got, his family have got a history with Gillingham.
12:44 And it was just the easy connection to make.
12:47 And then when I've come back off holiday, suddenly there's reports that he's had two
12:51 interviews with the club and could be leaving and still was the absolute favourite.
12:57 It was, yeah, I was surprised because I just assumed it was just early speculation, obvious
13:03 connection.
13:04 But then suddenly, and the stories actually came from very good sources and journalists
13:09 I trust.
13:11 So there must have been some weight behind it.
13:14 And yeah, and then on Monday when I spoke to Scott, there was never any explicit chat
13:20 about whether he had these interviews or anything like that.
13:24 But he just wanted it done.
13:26 He just wanted Gillingham to make an appointment.
13:30 I'm assuming he was waiting to hear at that point.
13:33 I don't know.
13:34 That's me just assuming.
13:36 And then obviously, yeah, it has resolved itself luckily before this weekend's game
13:41 and the games against County in the FA Cup.
13:43 Well, you speak about it resolving itself.
13:46 It will and truly resolved itself when the Gilles announced ex-Burz and Birmingham midfielder
13:51 Stephen Clements as their new permanent manager.
13:53 And how have the Reds fans reacted to this news, Mark?
13:56 They must be absolutely delighted that they still have the main man in charge.
14:00 Well, you'd think so, wouldn't you?
14:04 But no, as we know with any football fan, they think anyone who joins their club must
14:09 stay at that club for the rest of their career.
14:11 And it's not all of them.
14:14 There are some fans who've gone on and said, right, good out the way.
14:17 Let's focus on winning a game now because they've had a pretty poor run.
14:20 We'll get on to that in a bit.
14:22 But yeah, a lot of them are like, right, he's got a lot to do to win our trust back now.
14:26 And it's just like, really?
14:28 You've had such a good relation.
14:30 The Scotland's in the fans have had such a good relationship up until this point.
14:35 And just because he's gone for another job, if he has gone, I mean, we don't, we still
14:39 haven't had it confirmed officially by any of the parties that he did go for it.
14:43 It could have just been rumoured, rumours and people just trying to wind things up.
14:48 But it's just like, yeah, players, managers are always going to move on.
14:54 They're always going to be looking to further their careers.
14:57 And probably fans will hate me for saying this, Chillingham are a bigger club.
15:00 They've got a bigger, they've got a bigger history.
15:04 And by all accounts with their new chairman and that, they've got a lot more money.
15:08 So actual sort of like as a career progression move, it is a good move.
15:13 And yeah, probably fans won't like me for saying this, some won't.
15:16 But I think a lot of fans have seen just the realistic side of it.
15:21 And just by, right, okay.
15:23 Fair play to him.
15:24 He tried to progress his career.
15:26 But we'll move on now and he'll focus on poorly.
15:28 But I'm not going to profess to know, to say that I know Scott Lindsay better than
15:32 anyone else because I don't.
15:34 But I've spent a lot of time with Scott and I've spoken to him on the record.
15:38 I've spoken to him off the record and whatever anyone want to accuse him of.
15:43 One thing he, you can't communicate, not being committed.
15:45 He will be committed to the job he's in until the very last minute.
15:50 He's not in that job.
15:51 He's not just because he might've had an interview with someone else.
15:54 It doesn't mean he wasn't fully focused.
15:56 I mean, when I spoke to him on Monday, which was, I think you'd understand he gave the
16:00 players a day off on Monday because they didn't have a midweek game.
16:03 He was sitting watching Notts County games all day and he was coming up with this strategy
16:08 and plans.
16:09 And at that point we weren't clear on whether Gillingham had that man in place or not.
16:13 So even if he did think, oh, I still got a chance of getting this Gillingham job, he
16:17 was still there planning what they were going to do against Notts County.
16:21 So yeah, I mean, fans, football fans are football fans.
16:25 They're a fickle bunch.
16:26 If Crawley were top of the league after last weekend and he still came out that he'd got
16:32 two interviews, would Crawley fans be moaning as much?
16:35 It's because they've had a pretty poor October and yeah, we know what football fans are like.
16:41 All they want is loyalty and the moment that is questioned, some are going to turn.
16:46 So yeah, all it will take is a few more wins now.
16:50 And they'll be back.
16:51 He'll be back in everyone's good books.
16:54 We'll come back onto the Crawley's October in a minute.
16:57 But from my personal point of view, I kind of feel that because of Scott Lindsay's connection
17:01 with Gillingham, Mark, it's not a surprise that he may have interviewed.
17:04 But the way you've spoken about the fans and the fan reaction to it, do you think he might
17:08 just need to release like a statement just saying that I'm 100 percent committed or would
17:12 that be probably, I don't know, like an admission of guilt almost?
17:16 I don't know.
17:17 It's a funny one, isn't it?
17:18 Because yeah, I mean, from my point of view, yes, he absolutely should do that from my
17:23 professional point of view.
17:24 But if he doesn't do it, I could understand why he just wants to get on with his job,
17:28 focus on Crawley Town and get on with it.
17:30 But I think for him to be able to do that now, he does need to come out and just draw
17:34 a line under the matter.
17:35 Just say, yeah, I deny it.
17:38 I didn't go for a job, but these are all rubbish rumors.
17:41 Or yes, I went for two interviews.
17:45 Gillingham's close to my heart.
17:46 People know that it would have been like people must be able to see with my family links and
17:53 where I live and that that it would have been a good move for me.
17:56 But I am now and always have been focused on Crawley.
18:00 I mean, I've written it for him.
18:01 There you go, Scott.
18:02 You can have that.
18:03 But yeah, that I do think he needs to come out and say something.
18:09 Some fans will just ignore it anyway, whatever he says.
18:13 But I think some fans will say, OK, fair play.
18:16 Yeah, I understand where you're coming from.
18:18 Right.
18:19 Yeah.
18:20 Draw a line underneath and move on.
18:21 Well, the loss at Forest Green Rovers, as mentioned, meant Crawley Town went the entirety
18:25 of October without picking up a win.
18:27 And it was in stark contrast to September, where Crawley won all five League Two games.
18:32 I think we've kind of covered this, but what would you put this poor month down to, Mark?
18:35 Well, I think there have been distractions and noise that haven't helped at all.
18:41 But also, if you look at they've had some quite tough pictures going away to Doncaster
18:46 on Walsall on a Tuesday night, playing crew who are scoring for absolute fun at the moment.
18:53 And yeah, some other tough games.
18:55 And you also look at the Doncaster game.
18:57 Liam Kelly got a head injury and then he had to miss a game.
19:02 The Wrexham game he missed at home.
19:05 And then Ben Gladwin, he went off in that Wrexham game as well, injured quite early
19:09 on.
19:10 And they're two massively influential players.
19:13 And Liam Kelly has been one of the best players in League Two this year.
19:17 I don't think anyone can argue with that.
19:19 Ben Gladwin just has that leadership on the pitch.
19:23 And then you've had Kellen Gordon coming back from injury as well.
19:26 So there has been in September and August, there wasn't that many changes to the lineup.
19:33 In October, he's had to been forced into changes and try different things.
19:37 And I think that's had a big effect on it, that coupled with some really tough pictures
19:42 as well.
19:43 So yeah, he would have expected more.
19:46 I mean, any home game, he lost to crew and Wrexham both at home, but two games that I
19:50 imagine Scott thought he could probably win.
19:53 So they were two disappointing results.
19:56 But speaking to Scott, he's still happy with the performances.
19:58 The first half against Forest Green, I saw the highlights.
20:01 They absolutely battered them.
20:03 The keeper had pulled off a couple of worldly saves.
20:06 So he was, yeah, I think the fact that he's had a few injuries, tough pictures, I think
20:14 that it'll be back.
20:16 And this distraction around Gillingham.
20:18 But he will say Gillingham's had nothing to do with what's happened on the pitch.
20:22 But we all know that might not be the case.
20:25 So it's going to be on people's minds.
20:26 Yeah.
20:27 As I said, we've kind of touched on this very, very quickly on the Special FA Cup episode
20:32 we did with AUSSIE manager Dom De Pauwela.
20:34 But as you mentioned, Crawley at Notts County in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday,
20:38 is a win vital to kind of get the feel-good factor back at the club?
20:42 Oh, yeah, absolutely.
20:44 Yeah.
20:45 They go now and win on Saturday and then they've got the EFL trophy on Tuesday as well.
20:50 And then they're, I can't remember what the fixture is on November the 11th, I think they're
20:53 Atkinson's family at home.
20:55 Yeah.
20:56 I think if they can get wins in those games, then suddenly everything's rosy again, isn't
21:03 it?
21:04 And fans will move on.
21:05 But yeah, it's a tough tie, isn't it, away at Notts County.
21:09 But Notts County, I think, as I said yesterday, they said that's all out.
21:13 They want to get promotion.
21:14 They want back-to-back promotions this year.
21:16 So the FA Cup might be the one thing they sacrifice.
21:20 They are not financially in trouble or anything, as far as I'm aware.
21:24 They've got a big budget.
21:26 So the prize money at this stage in the FA Cup, not a big deal to them, but it is the
21:31 FA Cup.
21:32 So yeah.
21:33 I think Dom De Pauw said yesterday to us, didn't he, that he doesn't understand what
21:36 any team wouldn't want to do well in the FA Cup or progress as far as they can.
21:41 So yeah, it will definitely, if they can win on Saturday, it's a tough ask, but they are
21:46 capable of it.
21:48 It will definitely start bringing the mood back up and then you go and beat Aston Villa
21:51 on Tuesday night in the EFL trophy to progress for the next round.
21:55 Everyone's happy.
21:56 And he'll be the messiah again, won't he?
21:58 He will indeed, yeah.
22:00 We'd also like to wish the very best of Sussex, Luckton, Horsham and Worthing who are in FA
22:05 Cup first round action at Barnsley in Alfredton Town over the weekend.
22:08 The Hornets travel up to Oakwood on Friday evening, while Worthing take on Alfredton
22:12 on Saturday afternoon.
22:13 I want to take a very, very quick stroll down Steve Bones' score prediction corner, starting
22:17 with Everton, Brighton, Sam Morton.
22:19 How do you see this one going?
22:20 Yeah, as I say, it's going to be a tough game, tough game for Brighton, but I can see them
22:26 winning.
22:27 I think they drew a win in the league.
22:28 I think they'll get an early goal and don't nick a second one.
22:31 Everton will get one back, it won't be enough.
22:33 So 2-1 Brighton.
22:34 Mr Dunford, what about yourself?
22:35 I'm going for a draw in this one.
22:38 I think Everton, because they had that sort of landmark result last week against West
22:42 Ham, I think they're going to be riding high and it's going to be tough.
22:45 I think Everton will take the lead and Brighton will struggle to break them down, but they
22:48 will eventually.
22:49 And are you predicting FA Cup success for Crawley at Meadow Lane?
22:52 I am, yeah.
22:53 I'm going to go for a 2-1 win for Crawley.
22:56 It's going to be a tough one, but I think with everything settled now, I think the good
23:01 times are going to be back.
23:02 Sam Morton, are the good times going to be rolling on at the Broadfield Stadium after
23:06 Saturday?
23:07 I would like to think so.
23:08 I think I'll be less optimistic.
23:09 I think, yeah, Notts County, yeah, they're obviously a really good team, really strong.
23:15 And I think, yeah, 2-1 Notts County, I'd say.
23:20 We shall wait and see.
23:21 Thank you very much for your time, chaps.
