00:00 As Israel claimed to have destroyed 130 Hamas tunnels, an exodus on foot saw thousands of
00:06 Palestinians flee Gaza City.
00:10 The families of hostages taken by Hamas ask the European Parliament for help to release
00:16 them.
00:22 An historic day as Ukraine is one step closer to EU membership.
00:34 Israel said it had destroyed 130 Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip since it began its ground
00:39 operations.
00:40 Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israel Defense Forces were encircling Gaza
00:45 City and operating inside it.
00:48 UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that the number of civilians killed in
00:53 the Gaza Strip shows that there is something clearly wrong with Israel's military operation
00:58 against the Islamist Hamas organization.
01:01 According to the Hamas-run health ministry in the besieged territory, the Israeli military
01:05 campaign has killed 10,569 people, many of them children.
01:11 The pace of Palestinian civilians fleeing south from northern Gaza has accelerated as
01:15 strikes intensified. Crowds of Palestinians took heed of Israeli military orders and fled
01:21 northern Gaza on Wednesday during a four-hour window to evacuate. Thousands of people walked
01:27 down Gaza's main north-south Salah al-Din highway with only what they could carry in
01:32 their arms, some of them holding makeshift white flags.
01:35 The Qatari government is mediating in collaboration with the United States for Hamas to release
01:40 some of the hostages it's been holding since October 7, in exchange for Benjamin Netanyahu's
01:45 allowing a humanitarian pause in Gaza.
01:53 It's been more than a month since at least 245 people in Israel were taken hostages by
01:58 Hamas.
01:59 Shai Venkert is one of the family members that visited the European Parliament on Wednesday
02:04 asking the EU to help bring their beloved back home.
02:10 This is my son that is beating, slaughtered and the gun pointed at him. He is with handcuffs
02:18 but he is still looking at the camera like he is angry. Don't beat me, I'm handcuffed.
02:24 Omer is 22 years old. He's a very handsome, very beautiful boy. He only went to a party,
02:32 to a fest, to the Nova Fest, to celebrate happiness and freedom and love.
02:40 Four more family members of hostages are at the European Parliament to ask for more international
02:44 and European pressure for the release of the hostages.
02:49 Between them, Yoni Asher is really anxious for his wife and his two daughters who are
02:54 still being kept as hostages of Hamas. His mother-in-law was also taken. She was murdered
02:59 that day by Hamas. All of them are European citizens. He described to Euronews what brought
03:04 him to Brussels.
03:05 I couldn't do anything. I was helpless. I had nothing to do besides fall down on the
03:18 floor. But after not long ago, I decided it's either fight for the life of my family or
03:30 die. So I have only, not two choices, I have only one choice.
03:37 Despite his pain, Yoni finds words to tell the children in Gaza too.
03:46 You know something, if the son, the one who got kidnapped, my babies, if his son or daughter,
03:54 little daughter or son, was right here next to me right now, you know what I would do?
03:59 I would hug them and kiss them. You know why? Because children are children. But what would
04:05 you do instead of me? What would you do if your children were kidnapped from their grandmother's
04:10 living room? Would you not use any mean you have in order to get them back, to save their
04:17 lives?
04:18 Shah and Yoni support the decisions of the Israeli government's actions in Gaza. But
04:23 some other relatives are asking the government to start negotiations with Hamas.
04:27 Shona Murray, Your News, Brussels.
04:38 Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel Defense Forces are operating inside Gaza City. Referring
04:44 to Palestinian sources, the Institute for the Study of Wars says the IDF forces reached
04:50 an apartment building just north of al-Shatiyah camp here in this area. Israeli forces continued
04:58 clearing operations in Beit Hanun here. The IDF said that the forces destroyed several
05:05 Hamas tunnels inside a residential home in Beit Hanun. Most of the tunnels are built
05:11 beneath densely populated areas and targeting these structures would be fundamental for
05:18 the next phase and may take months to complete as military operations could further endanger
05:23 the hostages who are believed to be held in the tunnels.
05:32 Ukraine is one step closer to joining the European Union. The European Commission has
05:36 recommended member states formally open accession talks with Kiev. Although outstanding work
05:41 on fundamental reforms needs to be met in the coming months, nonetheless, the President
05:45 of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said today was a historical day.
05:50 "It is now ten years ago that the protests on Maidan started. Maidan protests where people
05:59 were shot because they wrapped themselves into a European flag. And now, ten years later,
06:10 today is a historic day because today the Commission recommends that the Council opens
06:17 accession negotiations with Ukraine and with Moldova."
06:22 In a 150-page assessment, the EU says Ukraine has made significant progress in tackling
06:28 corruption, the influence of oligarchs on political life, the rights of minorities and
06:32 the independence of the judicial system, although some more work is required in these areas.
06:37 Speaking to Euronews, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister said these issues would be resolved
06:42 soon and oligarchs would no longer be a problem in Ukraine.
06:45 "Experts and leaders of opinion have said oligarchs are officially dead, not from the
06:53 physical point of view but as a creation of the post-Soviet transition period. So there
07:02 are many things to be accomplished but basically we have been recognised as a country which
07:10 has overcame this influence and there is no way back."
07:15 The EU strongly commended Ukraine`s progress in the midst of the Russian invasion of their
07:18 country which created the momentum for theirs and Moldova`s membership bid. All 27 member
07:24 states have to unanimously agree to move Ukraine to accession talks. If all goes to plan, a
07:29 timeline for starting negotiations would then emerge for early 2024. Shona Murray, Euronews,
07:37 Brussels.
07:40 A pro-Russian politician has been killed in an apparent car bomb attack in Ukraine`s occupied
07:48 Luhansk region. Mikhail Filiponenko`s son told local media he died after suffering fatal
07:54 injuries in the explosion. He was the only person in the car. Filiponenko was a member
07:59 of the so-called People`s Council, a local parliament set up by Moscow aligned officials.
08:04 Luhansk is one of four Ukrainian regions illegally annexed by Russia after its invasion in February
08:10 2022.
08:18 Police evacuated a secondary school in Hamburg, northern Germany on Wednesday after being
08:22 alerted to the presence of two individuals suspected of carrying a firearm. Armed officers
08:28 searched the premises. Police reported that two teenagers probably pulled out a gun in
08:35 the building and then fled. The remaining students were taken to a nearby police station
08:40 until the arrival of their parents. The Bild newspaper reported that a teacher was threatened
08:45 by the teenagers and raised the alarm.
08:51 The Coca-Cola company in Croatia is pulling some of its products from shelves as there
08:56 were reports of several people falling ill after consuming bottled drinks. The authorities
09:01 are recommending people drink only tap water as they investigate the reasons behind the
09:06 cases of suspected poisoning. A total of eight people have been admitted to hospitals, mainly
09:12 in Zagreb, but a majority have relatively mild symptoms. Reports of alleged poisoning
09:18 emerged over the weekend after a man was hospitalized after drinking fizzy bottled water in a cafe.
09:27 Denmark tops the table for world`s worst binge drinkers, but British women are not far behind.
09:32 According to research from the OECD, the country`s drinking culture could be the reason why 26
09:38 percent of women in UK drink more than six drinks in one session at least once a month.
09:44 This is the equivalent of six 10-centiliter glasses of wine or six half-pints of beer.
09:49 The harmful use of alcohol is estimated to be a factor for more than 200 diseases and
09:53 injuries. Turkey, Italy and Greece have the lowest numbers of binge drinkers.
10:03 Last weekend`s heavy snowfall has been welcomed by many in the Alps. It means some ski resorts
10:10 are already turning into winter wonderlands. More than 60 centimeters of snow fell at an
10:16 altitude of 2,400 meters, building up a base layer of snow and kick-starting the season.
10:22 It`s a pleasure, yes. Especially that in recent years there is a little less snow, it`s a pleasure
10:33 to find good conditions.
10:35 It allows us to kick-start the season in an early way, it creates a certain emulation
10:39 with the clientele for the winter sports and it allows us to sell our annual subscriptions
10:44 as best as possible.
10:45 We needed snow, we lost three meters of ice this summer again. So, we need snow. After
10:50 that, if we accumulate, there is one meter, two meters that fall quickly. It was still
10:54 quite hot, there was also ice that was made, ice. And after that, we need a little time
10:59 to reopen the facilities and prepare the ski area.
11:04 The cold weather is expected to continue for the coming week, with forecasts of significant
11:09 snowfall.
11:15 A copy of the first folio of Shakespeare`s plays goes on display in London as Britain
11:19 and the World marks the 400th anniversary of its publication. The copy put on display
11:24 at the Corporation of London`s Guildhall Library for one day only is one of the best preserved
11:29 versions of the folio. The anniversary of the publication on the 8th of November 1623
11:35 has also been celebrated by sending a weather balloon into space, carrying a portrait of
11:39 the English playwright and a speech from a Midsummer Night`s Dream.
11:43 You'll see often the books all match.
