00:00:00 I get it. I go on vacations
00:00:02 Never
00:00:05 For me creatively, it's good. It's good to get a reset because I come back in guns blazing like a really
00:00:11 Don't don't risk any mental burnout when I do it. Well, I have resets, but my resets are like I call aid stations
00:00:19 Mental aid stations. Mm-hmm. So when you're going fucking hard and you grind all the fucking time
00:00:26 Like everybody knows you 24 hours in a day, but I'm in the shower. It's a mental aid station. I don't think about shit
00:00:32 I don't fucking think about people. I don't think about work. I don't think about running. I'll think about working out
00:00:37 I'm in the car another fucking mental aid station. Well, I'm fucking eating mental aid station
00:00:43 So people eat and they work and all that shit man
00:00:46 So I can grind hard because a lot of times man, I'm in mental fucking aid stations. Mmm chilling
00:00:52 So you have little mini vacay mini vacations man all day long all day long. Do you feel now?
00:00:58 almost a
00:01:00 Responsibility to like stay at it all the time because so many people are watching and paying attention and drawn inspiration from you
00:01:07 100% I mean like I probably would have retired a long time ago, but I get these emails from people and
00:01:15 It's like they're living
00:01:17 through me like
00:01:20 Their strength comes through what they know I'm doing. So there's so many times I want to get up and say no, man
00:01:26 Fuck it. I got mine. I'm good
00:01:28 And I'm like fuck fucking Tommy out there
00:01:31 fucking Tommy Tommy
00:01:35 Talking about fuck man. I read ten miles last night because you man
00:01:39 I'm like, you know a lot of people can live off of that and they can fucking be good with that
00:01:43 And you know a lot of motivational people come out here man and run their motherfucking mouths about shit
00:01:49 And I know they are not doing shit
00:01:52 They sit back and they're fucking like, you know, they have the little brainstorming sessions about oh, what should we say?
00:01:58 What's good? What's gonna connect with people while they're selling their fucking ass?
00:02:02 My brainstorming sessions is fucking out there in the fucking grip of life fucking grinding and that's what the all my material comes from
00:02:10 to suck
00:02:12 Every bit of it comes from the suck. Mmm, and that's the difference between there's there's like a whole industry
00:02:19 Now that's dedicated to trying to help people get motivated and a lot of the people that are involved in that are very unqualified
00:02:26 100% because they're not really doing anything. No, there's so many people that haven't actually done anything
00:02:31 But they'll try to teach you how to get your life in order how to get your mind, right?
00:02:37 And develop that warrior mentality. I'm like bitch. You don't have that. Well, they're utilizing the weakness of the world right now
00:02:43 Yeah, the world's in a very bad place
00:02:45 So the P these these people who are like con artists they sit back and say oh I
00:02:50 Can come up with this I can come up with this and this right here can probably be some money
00:02:54 Yeah, so they're in it for for fucked up reasons. This is not a whole lot of people like you you're you know
00:03:01 I love that phrase
00:03:03 Uncommon amongst uncommon men because it's it's such a good phrase because it just shows you
00:03:08 You you've been on this path for so long and you're grinding for so long
00:03:14 But you're also honest about there's moments where you don't want to fucking do this
00:03:19 Oh, which is why it's so interesting because you do it, right?
00:03:24 You you do it without any reservation you just go through it, right?
00:03:29 But you always talk about I don't fucking do this shit, but you always do it
00:03:33 But that's what people need to hear because they feel like that somewhere out there
00:03:37 There's some superhuman person who never feels despair and doesn't have any
00:03:43 There's there's no
00:03:45 No hesitation so they feel like there's this person that's so different than them
00:03:51 It's so much stronger than them and doesn't ever
00:03:53 Have any procrastination and you're like that's not me
00:03:58 No, I love that phrase. You told me once he goes sometimes
00:04:02 I look at my fucking shoes for a half an hour with those bitches on
00:04:04 It's a true statement, but but what I do though man is I I came with this thing called perform without purpose
00:04:12 And so many people they need to have a 5k a 10k. I need to have a
00:04:17 Course in front of me. I need to have something in front of me for me get my fucking ass up and do some shit and
00:04:24 That used to be me and nowadays, you know shit for past 20 some years
00:04:30 I don't need fucking purpose and people miss out on this man the purpose
00:04:34 We're all looking for this golden purpose. Is it this is it that isn't making money?
00:04:39 It is is it my family motherfucker? The purpose is you
00:04:42 We forget that every fucking day. I wake up. I don't want to do some fucking shit. I'm like, okay, man
00:04:49 Do you want to be a bitch today?
00:04:50 Do you want to feel like a little bitch?
00:04:52 Do you wanna walk around all day knowing that you could but you didn't so I it's perform without purpose
00:04:58 You have to learn how to get up and do shit when you ain't got no fucking 5k. No 10k
00:05:03 Nothing nothing exists your life fucking sucks. You're in the fucking dungeon. But guess what motherfucker?
00:05:09 I'm still going to get it because when that time comes because the time is gonna come
00:05:15 When that purpose is there?
00:05:17 You'll be ready
00:05:18 But most of us fucking aren't ready because we don't know how to do without having the golden carrot in front of us
00:05:24 Yeah, and so you're all fucked. There's also this thing where if you do it once it's over you get a break
00:05:30 Oh, like that's what a 10k is. That's what a marathon is
00:05:34 I'm gonna train for this marathon and you're training and you're training for that big day
00:05:38 But you're also recognizing when that marathons over. Ah, that's right. That's right. And as you get better at that, ha moment
00:05:45 The all moon becomes less and less. So my all moments now are like oh I ran today. I went to the gym today
00:05:52 I did this and this today I studied today
00:05:54 Have about eight hours off
00:05:57 And those eight hours are glorious to me and every day you go back out and you start earning that and every day you wake up
00:06:03 It sucks and when it's over you feel better. It sucks
00:06:07 You feel better and as you get going as every step you take in that journey as you're like for me running
00:06:14 I run every day fucking hate it, but every step I take I'm like, all right motherfucker
00:06:18 You beating the demon again you want every day, but I don't think people understand how fucked up your knees are
00:06:25 No, you you run over you when you sent me that x-ray after your surgery
00:06:30 and
00:06:32 I looked at what they did to your knee and and I looked at what it looks like
00:06:37 Right what the actual bone-on-bone looks like and right how it had distorted because there's no cushioning at all
00:06:45 No, and the doctor said to you I can't even believe you could fucking walk on these knees
00:06:49 Yeah, forget about run thousands of miles. So you're doing this every day in
00:06:54 Constant pain, right, right. What is it? Like? Well, I don't see explain your knees first of all, so, okay
00:07:01 So people think that my knees are bad from a lot of running and they're wrong. I'm I wasn't born healthy
00:07:09 I wasn't born with some great body alignment some great. No, I have sickle cell. I've all kind of shit
00:07:15 I have all kind of health issues, you know all kind of I'm fucked up
00:07:19 So I had a choice to make and the choice was, you know growing up, you know, okay
00:07:24 This hurts that hurts we can just sit down and do nothing or we can see how far we can push the human body
00:07:31 So on that journey as I started getting more and more into my mind and start realizing that while what I'm capable of doing
00:07:38 My mind got stronger. So the so the pain in my knees
00:07:41 While it sucked I've been doing it for so long
00:07:45 It was like it became my new norm like okay, my knees hurt
00:07:50 Fuck it. Stop, you know, and I call it like I'm stop feeling sorry for yourself, but you sometimes have to ignore your feelings
00:07:57 I'm gonna send Jamie a picture you need. Oh, no, dude. I think Jamie has some uh, do you have a picture of his knee?
00:08:03 Jamie did I ever send it to you Jamie? I
00:08:06 Have it here. Hold on. Let me just but keep going. No, so it's like
00:08:11 for me, I I made decision and my decision was to be
00:08:16 the best person I could and
00:08:19 I basically a lot more as I wake up and say fuck your feelings
00:08:23 And that doesn't mean like, you know, don't take it literally fuck your feelings
00:08:28 But sometimes you have to go beyond what you're feeling and my knees were fucked
00:08:33 But guess what?
00:08:34 I wanted to run and I knew that okay you can get knee replacements this and that like I said
00:08:38 It wasn't because of I ran too much people. I was gonna sell my you ran so much so you fucked up your body
00:08:43 You know, you don't want to be like David Goggins. I hear all the time. You don't be like David Goggins
00:08:48 But so there's you need yeah, there it is
00:08:50 Look at the fact that there's zero space
00:08:53 Between those bones. Yes, sir from the top from your your your tibia to your femur. There's zero space
00:09:01 It's just kneecap
00:09:04 covering two bones that are rubbing against each other and
00:09:07 so
00:09:09 This was after surgery where they had to cut your knee
00:09:14 Slice your shin like in half and then take a chunk out of it because it had deformed so much
00:09:21 From you running with bone on bone that it was starting to like swell out in one direction
00:09:26 Right. It was changing the alignment of your leg, right? This happened back in 2000 2001 was going through buds
00:09:33 So this happened for a long this is this right here has been going on for a long time
00:09:38 So and it got to a point where it's like, okay
00:09:42 I'm done and
00:09:44 That's the place in there right now. So as you see the wedge
00:09:47 That part there in the bone that's opened up. Yeah, so they cut it realign it and then
00:09:53 Now the alignment's better, but this is now about 17 months ago 17 18 months ago when this happened. So
00:10:01 Can I get some screws that fit go back to that?
00:10:04 Sticks right out of the fucking bone
00:10:11 Is that thing sticking in your leg no, I don't well I feel the plate every single time I move
00:10:16 Yeah, so everything so because it's like connected to the hamstring
00:10:20 So whenever I fucking whenever I move that plate is very irritating
00:10:26 So every step even like when I walk when I run it's just it's this very irritating thing and then you gotta wait
00:10:32 For so long for that way to start getting back into place. And if you see that other picture I sent of
00:10:38 The foam my my foam leg that put my hand in I think Jennifer sent it to you
00:10:44 Jamie with the foam leg, you'll see this in a second. This is fucked up. So like this swelling in that leg
00:10:49 Was fucking nuts. Oh when you had a Dima, yeah, you showed it to me in Vegas
00:10:54 Yeah, you were sticking your thumb into your I grabbed it. Yeah. Yeah, so it was it was pretty nuts
00:10:59 But um, you know once again, it's just things you uh things I was willing to endure
00:11:05 To get yeah
00:11:08 So that's just all post surgery swelling, yeah, so when the doctor
00:11:14 Said this to you and he he said look this is how fucked up your knee is
00:11:18 Did he say you need a replacement? What was he saying? Basically? I had two options
00:11:23 So I went to the first guy had the surgery done. That's in the book. I talked about that
00:11:27 But then the second guy so after the first surgery I was done. So this is the first surgery after buds
00:11:33 No, so this is like back in
00:11:36 Looking at two thousand. So me and Cameron this is recently so I didn't have any surgery going through buds
00:11:42 Really? I have any surgery at all. So I went through in
00:11:46 2001 I fucked at 2000 2001 whatever was I messed up my leg real bad and how we kept on going on it
00:11:52 Just kept on going. What did you do to it in how weak it was like I
00:11:56 Fucked it up somehow like running or whatever. I have it and can't hurt me. But um, it was uh, I
00:12:02 Think the boat I fell it twisted but over a period of time. It's got worse and worse and worse
00:12:07 So I was getting like toward all shots every day and then this got worse, but I'm like fucking I'm good
00:12:12 So I kept going on it. So it kind of healed all fucked up
00:12:15 So this kept going kept going kept going years later
00:12:18 Years later kept going on it. So I stopped squatting. So it became like okay my knees fucked up
00:12:24 My lime is messed up. My hips are messed up. I can't squat so I can still run
00:12:29 It's okay. I started running because running doesn't require you to bend down and shit
00:12:33 So I'm running a lot and it got to um 20 years later pretty much and it was
00:12:39 2020 or I don't get this right Cameron Haynes came down. We went for a 20-mile run
00:12:45 My knees were fucked up for like 10 years long story short
00:12:49 It was like, okay, man
00:12:50 I got to get this thing looked at
00:12:52 So when got looked at the doc was like, oh we can go in there and just do a quick little fucking
00:12:57 You know cleanup job and the cleanup job went so quick
00:13:01 Guy was breaking tools and shit fucking up like literally broke tools and I have it in there
00:13:07 He was breaking - I talked to him. I know it's only your meniscus was the hardest meniscus. He's ever experienced in his life
00:13:14 He's like dude. He goes I didn't know that meniscus could get that way. He goes like he's not human
00:13:21 He goes when I was cutting into meniscus it broke the scalpel. Yep. Wolf's loss syndrome. He said wolf's lost something
00:13:27 Yeah, he said normally when you cut into meniscus it just slices right through like butter. He's like I couldn't cut it
00:13:34 Yeah, my one butter my one butter. So all those motherfuckers who think I'm gonna put in them hundred-mile weeks go fuck yourself, bitch
00:13:41 You don't get no shit like that baby. I send the fucking couch
00:13:44 No, I mean, that's the craziest thing I've ever heard like you've hardened your meniscus just through constant pressure and pounding
00:13:51 Yeah, so he went in there to clean it up and then what happened?
00:13:54 So basically that little meniscus that whatever the fuck was in there
00:13:58 So my so my alignment was so bad the only thing that was keeping me able to do anything
00:14:04 Was that little fucked up?
00:14:07 Messed up with um meniscus. It was all jarred up and jacked up. But the second that thing got out dude
00:14:14 It was like I was have you seen Star Wars those those storm thing those those those big fucking um things that what they called
00:14:23 They have wobbly legs and they hit like long robot things. Yeah, the robot things. That's how my leg was
00:14:29 It was it had nothing. It was just like a little dangling fucking like so from my knee down
00:14:35 The shin the tip fib it just dangled like there was nothing and I was like, okay, man this
00:14:42 So it was worse after the cleanup much worse. Like I was done. I went from running 200 miles
00:14:48 So I did 240 mile race in
00:14:52 2020 October
00:14:53 2020 it was Moab went out there got second place 62 hours knee was fucked up getting it drained before the fucking race
00:15:00 But I still ran 240 miles literally five or six days before the race
00:15:05 I'm getting it drained and it was a baseball-sized fucking. Um, it's called a Baker's assist
00:15:10 So they drained it and I went in there did the race finished it and I was like, okay, here we go
00:15:16 We're not gonna do some more races
00:15:18 I did like another 200 miler did a couple more races and then I could say cam came down
00:15:22 Right after that I went got this surgery done
00:15:24 I went from running every day to now. I have some fucking legs just dangles and
00:15:29 After that surgery just fucking dangled. I was like, okay, man fucked and just from that little piece of meniscus
00:15:36 Just that little piece of meniscus and I'm sitting there thinking okay, man. This is not this doesn't make any sense to me
00:15:41 This is something fucked. I don't understand why I can't I can't put any pressure on my leg
00:15:46 The the amount of blood they were taking out was was unbelievable. So there's the blood right there. Jesus Christ. That's the blood dude
00:15:53 Oh my god is one two, three, four. You see the black blood. Yeah, that is deoxygenated blood
00:15:59 So whatever was going on
00:16:02 Whatever the fuck was going on. That's why it looks different color
00:16:05 So the red blood is the blood that has oxygen. That's right. And that was just like coagulated. Yes fucked up blood. Yep
00:16:13 Jesus yeah, so that so after surgery I'm like I'm like seven seven days out of whatever the fuck it was
00:16:18 I it once again, I don't know the exact times but I have them in the book. I have everything fucking dialed in
00:16:24 I went back and I was like man, I'm I'm fucked up
00:16:28 I mean, it's a simple meniscus surgery man, like people go back a week later. They're playing two weeks three weeks tops
00:16:34 I'm like man, I'm never gonna fucking run again. I'm gonna walk with the fucking limp. So I'm going back
00:16:39 I'm getting fucking like I'm literally get my knee drained every week getting PRP. I'm like man, but in the back of my mind
00:16:46 I I know how far I can push myself. I know my body so fucking well so well
00:16:51 And I'm like, this is um, this is wrong. I'm never gonna run again
00:16:57 I'm never gonna run again. I walk with the limp. So this went off about six six months
00:17:02 So I had the surgery done in February. It was a February March April May June
00:17:09 About four months four months after surgery four or five months. I'm like, hey Jennifer
00:17:13 I gotta find another
00:17:17 Somebody else look at my fucking knee. So I try to keep my shit together
00:17:20 But imagine when you go from every day your fucking life grinding and you go to nothing
00:17:25 Mmm, like literally like 90 minute surgery done. That's crazy that it was just a little meniscus scope
00:17:32 90 minute surgery done and I was like, okay, man
00:17:36 This is anyway, so I found this guy named. Dr. Gamal out of New York
00:17:41 and we fly there, but I'm like
00:17:44 He can't fix this man because I knew was a lot more than knees
00:17:47 it was this it was all kind of this fucked up body shit and
00:17:50 I am I walk in the office and he decides to see me and me and Jennifer and their Jennifer's happy. She's happy shit
00:17:58 It's like oh my god, man. This guy's gonna be able to get you a fucking meniscus replacement
00:18:03 He was all kind of guru doubt. Mmm, but I'm a realist, bro. I
00:18:07 Will push myself and I'll go as far as I can but I also am a realist
00:18:12 I also knew the back of my mind. I could try ruin your fucking party Jennifer. This is what I'm saying myself
00:18:16 But this shit's done. It's over. So I went just to pretty much appease her
00:18:22 And just see you know, there's anything left. So I walk in the office and Doc's like, uh,
00:18:27 Yeah, I'm looking at your x-rays and that's the doctor who's like
00:18:31 I don't know how this is when the dr. Gamal look him up world-renowned motherfucker, dude
00:18:36 And when this guy looked at me straight-faced he said man, I don't know how you did anything
00:18:43 With those knees anything let alone run 200 miles back-to-back 240 miles where the fuck you did. I don't know how you did it and
00:18:51 So I'm like, okay, whatever. Can we get it fixed?
00:18:54 And he didn't want to get there because he knew I was fucked. It's like no, you know, we
00:18:59 We can maybe you know, try it in an unloader brace. Maybe an unloader brace will help you out
00:19:05 What's an unloader brace? So basically my knee went in on the meniscus side on the inside
00:19:10 So it was like jamming on the inside
00:19:12 So this brace kind of like it kind of helps realign the knee a little bit
00:19:16 So then you cannot have so much pressure on the inside your leg
00:19:19 So that's it right there one side. Yeah, so basically
00:19:23 I'm like man, I'm like, okay, I'm not
00:19:26 I'm like, okay. I'm not
00:19:28 So this is all you have for me. I'm like you can't do shit for me
00:19:31 and he was like, um
00:19:34 No
00:19:35 And he was walking out of the office and he could tell I was like I wasn't too fucked up
00:19:39 But I was like because I kind of was preparing myself for the next part of my journey
00:19:44 I don't like to lay in my shit too long, you know, I give myself a couple of minutes to okay, motherfucker
00:19:48 We got a man to fuck up
00:19:50 We gotta get back in this fucking like what's next?
00:19:52 You know, let's go let's go see what you know, let's go back to college
00:19:55 Let's let's do something because you're you're running and your athletic career is done
00:19:58 so
00:20:00 He got to the door. He opened it and as he was literally he was shouldered out the motherfucking door
00:20:06 And i'm looking at jennifer. I'm like, well, you know, we'll go back to fucking, you know, go back to nevada and fucking start again
00:20:13 and he was like
00:20:15 Try the unloader brace out
00:20:18 And there's one more thing we could possibly do for you
00:20:22 and i'm like
00:20:23 Motherfucker like get your little monkey fucking ass back in here, bro. Like what is it?
00:20:27 Like like like what the fuck's going on? So he was like, yeah, there's this surgery called hto
00:20:33 And he was like you can go in
00:20:36 We can fucking you know, pretty much break your tibia
00:20:38 It's called high tibia osteotomy
00:20:41 They go in and they break your tibia
00:20:43 they they they like
00:20:46 Slice into it and they they wedge it to the point where they realign your leg back up
00:20:52 It's a very painful surgery. It's very painful afterwards painful as fuck
00:20:56 Afterwards and they put that plate the plate you saw
00:20:59 back on
00:21:01 And then your leg is
00:21:03 So so your knee is still where it was because this doesn't get fixed
00:21:06 So it takes several months for that knee to start working that way back
00:21:10 Into where the alignment is so now my leg is just now so here it is see it on the image
00:21:16 Yeah, so they take a slice out of it because it's deformed
00:21:21 Yep, and that slice lowers the part that's deformed and tries to make it a more natural shape
00:21:27 But you're still dealing with bone on bone
00:21:30 So you're still dealing you're still dealing with the pain of arthritis essentially because you do you have any cartilage in your knees?
00:21:38 Not much not much at all if any
00:21:41 So the thing about it, it takes that pressure off of that. So it was complete bone on bone, right?
00:21:47 What that surgery does is it takes it over to the lateral side? So on the outside?
00:21:52 So I have a nice meniscus over there that thing wasn't touched for years because how I was born all the pressure was on
00:21:58 the uh, my um
00:22:01 Medial meniscus so your knee had been misaligned your whole life the whole life. That's right
00:22:05 Yeah, that's my whole life has been fucked up. So
00:22:07 My meniscus on my lateral side is pristine
00:22:12 So now the way he did it is that all of my pressure is going on to that pristine meniscus
00:22:18 Okay, so now it's all about getting that leg back aligned, which is taking forever and it's still not aligned
00:22:25 It's getting there. It's getting yeah, it's getting there
00:22:27 Can they do a meniscus replacement on you?
00:22:30 No, so that's what I wanted to get done. But if your knee is so far gone like mine was
00:22:36 There was no option for that. Why is that because my knee was so far gone
00:22:41 So it was like when you put that meniscus in there, however, it works. He said it wouldn't have taken it like basically
00:22:46 Yeah, we were taking the bed would have fucking destroyed it because your leg is so your knee is so fucked up
00:22:49 So this was the only option for me
00:22:52 Don't they make like an artificial meniscus now as well? Yep, and this with this guy really is specializes in
00:22:58 So he's he's like the guy to go to for that stuff. What is an artificial meniscus consist of?
00:23:03 I guess it's just I have no idea. I'm not even gonna get into that shit
00:23:07 See if we can find out what that is because I got some fucked up knees too. Not like yours though
00:23:12 If I ever think about complaining, I look at yours. Yes, sir. Let's see world's first artificial meniscus available in israel
00:23:19 And then you go andreas gamal
00:23:21 Yeah, there he is. And so this it looks like some sort of a clear
00:23:26 gel looking stuff
00:23:28 And which is you know, the the meniscus is just a cushioning in between the the two bones and the cartilage
00:23:34 And this is uh, oh look at that. Yep
00:23:37 Hmm
00:23:40 But they can't do that to you. No, you have to be a good candidate for that. So your knee has to be in a certain
00:23:45 certain condition
00:23:47 And mine was not in that condition
00:23:49 It was if if you were a candidate for that would they be able to do it and you'd be able to run?
00:23:53 Or is that just like to move around and walk from what I read about you can you can run you can do everything you
00:23:59 Want to do but sometimes if you do a lot it wears it out. Hmm, so you can get a new one get a new one
00:24:04 Yeah, that's not that bad. Not that bad man for you. It doesn't work
00:24:08 No, because basically it wouldn't even work for me because my knee was gone
00:24:12 But the way he reshaped it wouldn't that correct?
00:24:16 I mean he kind of like changed your alignment of your knee and made it more normal, right?
00:24:21 I think it had he made it more normal. But from what I understand
00:24:24 Um, if you put that in there structurally like structure wise what makes it more normal is the surgery he did
00:24:31 so
00:24:33 Right now there's no bone on bone for me
00:24:35 So there's no need for that meniscus at all
00:24:38 So a lot of people get their meniscus taken out
00:24:40 If you have the right alignment and your body can do what it's supposed to do, really?
00:24:44 Yeah, but if you get your knee your meniscus taken out you're just cartilage on cartilage if you know, um, dewane wade
00:24:49 Dwayne basketball player. Yeah, I believe dewane wade played years
00:24:54 Years if i'm correct with no meniscus
00:24:58 Yeah, I think in both his knees jesus. Yeah years
00:25:03 He had he ended up having like really bad knee problems, but his meniscus was messed up back in the day
00:25:08 They used to take it out
00:25:10 So if you look here, here it is when I was in college
00:25:12 Wow surgery to remove the meniscus in his left knee 11 years ago while he was at marquette led to ongoing knee problems
00:25:20 He's had with miami heat. I'm, so glad that you have this fucking thing to pull up jamie because I would be talking out
00:25:25 My ass half the damn time. That's what I do, man. You fucking
00:25:28 Fucking square me away, brother
00:25:31 Knees are a problem man. Yeah, and the fact that you require your knees to do what you do
00:25:37 Like your your whole thing is endurance athlete, right?
00:25:42 And to be an endurance athlete, you gotta be able to move your legs. Yeah, I'll move them but what I like about
00:25:47 And this was this was like literally a trained skill for me
00:25:51 was i'm i'm always preparing for like
00:25:54 not being a bitch
00:25:58 like a lot of people get to a point like for instance like
00:26:00 If jennifer can't do something like if you know if if if she can't go for a run or whatever just like because she
00:26:06 Something's wrong like some simple shit. It's gonna bother
00:26:09 I got to a point in my life where I realized this is life
00:26:12 And so I move on past things real quick. So people like oh my god, what are you gonna do? David if you can't run?
00:26:19 Motherfucker, I'll swim
00:26:22 Or i'll go to college or I'll do something else this like like this isn't my life
00:26:26 So i'm i'm i'm i'm very aware how quick life can take shit from you
00:26:31 And i've always prepared my mind
00:26:34 For the next chapter
00:26:36 And what happened with me was I started this thing called front loading
00:26:39 So when I was young, I used to be a little piece of shit, you know, like fucking oh i'm not good enough
00:26:44 I can't do this. I can't do that
00:26:46 But the second I got my head out of my ass
00:26:48 and I realized man
00:26:50 You can achieve a lot of shit if you get off your ass and you start moving and you start motivating yourself
00:26:56 So I become a self motivator. So I started front loading
00:26:58 And front loading these people man, you've done so much by 47
00:27:01 Because I don't know what tomorrow is going to bring me
00:27:04 So my my military resume is fat, you know, I fucking did a lot in the military. I did a lot outside the military
00:27:12 I've i've i've made money. I've i've i've done almost every race out there hard race in the world
00:27:17 I've broken pull-up records. I've done a lot of shit. So when these bad times come
00:27:22 And also not like I know that like work your ass off so so you can enjoy yeah, you're taking a shot
00:27:27 You know you you may not live to be old
00:27:30 But what if you do?
00:27:32 And you worked your ass off when you were able
00:27:34 And you were able to fucking get up early able to grind if you front load it properly
00:27:39 The back half of your fucking life is money. And that's what I did the second
00:27:44 I realized that man you are a piece of shit. We got to get going
00:27:47 Because at 47, man, you're not gonna be able to do any of this shit
00:27:51 50 whatever you are. So I front loaded so all these bad things have happened to me
00:27:56 I sit back with man. How are you handling this? So well
00:27:58 Motherfucker, i've i've done it
00:28:01 I front loaded I have the money I need have the success I need I have the fucking
00:28:05 The determination the willpower and also the pride in myself. So when I wake up every morning, I know who the fuck I am
00:28:11 I front loaded perfectly so I don't care what's taking from me
00:28:14 But it's gotta still there's got to be
00:28:19 A strange position to be in where your body is your medium
00:28:22 The body is the vehicle for you to express yourself, right and your body's breaking down
00:28:26 And I know that they consider doing knee replacements on you, too
00:28:31 Yep, and what was that conversation like it was it was very basic man
00:28:35 It's like hey, you know, you're not gonna be able to do some of the shit that you've done even though obviously people are
00:28:40 But that was a conversation
00:28:43 And I I know it sounds weird. It was totally fine with me
00:28:46 It was fine because I had dude
00:28:48 People understand
00:28:50 This this wasn't like a a part-time job
00:28:53 Man when you've done without like kobe bryant when kobe fucking retired at last game
00:28:58 He like 60 points or some shit. He walked off the court. He didn't fucking cry
00:29:02 He said oh my god, i'm gonna miss the sport. What the fuck he walked off. He gave he gave everything he could
00:29:08 Man, when you fucking give what i've given and motherfuckers like to say. Oh, you fuck you
00:29:13 You don't fucking know shit
00:29:15 Which makes me who I am
00:29:17 I've given everything people make all you you ran on fucked up knees. You taped your feet up. You did blah blah
00:29:22 You had two heart surgeries. You kept on going
00:29:24 Yep
00:29:27 Sure did I had somewhere to fucking go
00:29:29 I had somewhere to fucking go and I got there
00:29:32 And buddy when motherfuckers tell you you can take a break now
00:29:35 Hey, you're fucked up as long as my knees are halfway work. I got to run you're telling me man
00:29:41 Maybe maybe a chance I can't run no more. Hmm
00:29:44 Give me an excuse to fucking not do shit. But as long as I have no excuse I gotta do it
00:29:48 But I was I was I was happy where I was I gave everything I gave everything to who I am
00:29:53 And that's why i'm people. Oh, I don't believe that don't believe it
00:29:57 I gave everything and when you get everything that you have no
00:30:00 regret
00:30:02 People didn't understand me people understand me now. I don't give a fuck
00:30:04 I know exactly what I was doing. I'm not a masochist. I'm not crazy
00:30:08 I'm not this and that people try to title me and label me
00:30:12 No, I had something to fucking do
00:30:14 well
00:30:16 The way I describe it to people when people ask me like why does he do all these things?
00:30:19 Like what is it? What is the motivation here? I go
00:30:21 He's on a mental journey that very few people have ever been on
00:30:27 because
00:30:29 The what people don't understand you they or they misunderstand you or they purposely?
00:30:33 Misinterpret the way you're living your life
00:30:37 You're trying
00:30:39 to understand your mind
00:30:42 In a way that very few human beings ever get to understand their mind because you're taking your mind
00:30:49 Into these terrible dark places all the time and you're trying to pull things out of that
00:30:56 You're trying to learn things about yourself and about your potential from that. That's exactly it. That's what people don't understand. I studied the darkness
00:31:04 You you find no fucking answers in the light
00:31:09 None, it's too happy. It's too nice. And we're not we don't need to be taught
00:31:13 How to live in happiness that that just comes naturally to us
00:31:16 Happy moments, but the dark times man, you can't and you can't get there unless you put yourself there life will take you there
00:31:23 But when you get into those dark moments, that's what people that's why people how are you able man?
00:31:28 I couldn't fucking read and write till I was a junior in high school. How are you able to write like this man?
00:31:32 motherfucker
00:31:36 I go to such places in my mind and I study the darkness
00:31:40 Like it's not just physical when I was growing up and I saw my mom getting beat and I got beat
00:31:45 And I was some stuttering little black kid in all white school and i'm on stage and I gotta say one line
00:31:51 One fucking line in front of fucking 15 people and I walk off stage kind of fucking stutter
00:31:56 All those insecurities and all those fucking things man
00:31:59 I used to go home and fucking cry. I'm like my god, man. I'm fucked up. I'm so fucked up
00:32:05 Hang on man as I got older. We gotta study this shit, man
00:32:08 The only way we're gonna fucking get through this if we study it
00:32:11 So every time i'm in a dark moment and life's fucked up around me, whether it be physical or just life
00:32:17 I get in it man with the fucking pen and paper i'm like, okay
00:32:20 This fucking sucks. I can feel like i'm fucking losing my shit. Let's fucking study this
00:32:25 Let's come out of this motherfucker genius
00:32:28 You know, I started I studied the the the black matter of the mind
00:32:34 The dark matter, you know, like fucking stephen hawkins. That's that's fucking his name. I said it, right?
00:32:38 That motherfucker studied the space and shit. Yeah, that's where I consider myself man
00:32:42 You know, I I was on a journey just like you said, I mean you you couldn't have said any better
00:32:47 And so many people get it wrong. I don't give a fuck man. You can't
00:32:50 For me, I cannot help people. There's a lot of cookie cutter shit out here in this world
00:32:56 Oh
00:32:57 Discipline wake up early take cold shower. Fuck this. Fuck that whatever it's all fucking bullshit
00:33:04 It's not
00:33:05 But what they don't teach you
00:33:07 within the cookie cutter
00:33:09 Is like our minds are like a fucking garage
00:33:12 And the garage if you open a garage, it's all cluttered up. It's all fucked up
00:33:17 You can't put your car in there. You got fucking boats and you got fucking kids toys and shit everywhere
00:33:22 but if you organize that fucking garage
00:33:25 And you put everything in its rightful spot
00:33:28 You can pull that car in there
00:33:29 You can put two cars in there you put bikes in there and that's like with the mind people talk about discipline and fucking
00:33:34 Determination and fucking you know repetitions and all this shit
00:33:39 consistency
00:33:41 Why people fall off the wagon so often is because their mind is full of shit
00:33:46 There's no room in that mind for discipline. There's no room for consistency. They may do it once or twice
00:33:53 But then the mind takes over and that cluttered fucking garage
00:33:57 Comes in and then it's like a circuit breaker man a circuit breaker just overloads and fucking sparks
00:34:02 And our minds that's that's our mind man. It's like a fucking circuit breaker
00:34:06 That's so much shit in it. You keep on loading it. You can't put any more into it
00:34:11 so i've i've talked about it in there man so much about
00:34:15 Clearing space in your fucking mind. So then you have room for all those discipline
00:34:21 Waking up early taking those because they they do mean something
00:34:25 But we don't get to that fucking dark matter that is keeping you from clearing out that mental garage
00:34:31 That's a good way to put it
00:34:34 Because that is the mind of most people is filled with stuff that they have to move around to get to what they want
00:34:41 And it's constantly piling up and shit unorganized and organized mind man
00:34:47 You're looking at the fucking I gotta take care of the kids. The kids schedules all fucked up my husband my wife
00:34:52 you know, i'm
00:34:53 Fucking i'm going by mcdonald's to get this and i'm rushing my schedule. Everything's just fucked
00:34:58 I wish I was doing this but i'm doing that. That's it that and this I want to raise but I can't get one
00:35:03 I boss the asshole where's greatness in that man?
00:35:06 You can't you you can't fit discipline into that. You can't fit structure. You can't fit consistency
00:35:12 You can't fit the grind and then when you try
00:35:15 It just gets fucking it gets fucking overrun
00:35:19 By the fucking clutter and you're fucked up mental garage when you are in these dark places
00:35:25 And you're gathering up these lessons
00:35:27 How difficult is it to try to bring that back and convey it to people?
00:35:34 When you're not in that space
00:35:37 Like when you're in that space when you're in the moab 240
00:35:39 And you're going uphill and you're in the middle of the ground. It's just deep suck, right?
00:35:45 How do you convey?
00:35:48 Where that mental fortitude comes from? How do you bring that back?
00:35:52 It's almost like you've got something you can't even hold in your hand and you want to show it to people
00:35:56 I take snapshots
00:36:00 so
00:36:00 Every time i'm in a bad situation like, you know, I I study it and that's the only reason
00:36:05 I do have the shit I do is i'm studying this shit because I know that
00:36:09 I never thought I was gonna be writing books and trying to help people get better
00:36:13 but
00:36:15 I'm, I was always trying to do it because I knew I sucked
00:36:18 And so when you know, you're trying to get somewhere, you know, you suck, you know that you you believe that you're a born loser
00:36:24 You are taking snapshots man. Like, you know, you you see something on your phone
00:36:29 Like oh man, i'm gonna take a fucking snapshot of that or how do you do the little picture shit?
00:36:33 So you can save it on your phone. I do that in my mind. So I get in these moments. I'm like fucking okay
00:36:38 Wow, that's some fucking good knowledge right there, man
00:36:41 I snapshot it because I know that I can use that later
00:36:45 I can I can I can use this because i'm not out there just i'm not most people
00:36:49 They go out and they run and they go out and do and they're like, oh, this is beautiful
00:36:53 Look at the fucking mountains and the shit and all this bullshit. No
00:36:57 I don't like it. My body hurts. I'm hurting. How do we get through this?
00:37:01 And it's a fucking it's a it's it's a lab. It's my mental lab
00:37:06 And I and so when I come home i'm not forgetting it
00:37:09 And the second like every day I get done running or every day I get through working every day I get through studying
00:37:14 Whatever it is that brings me to that place of knowledge
00:37:16 I come home and that book was mostly written
00:37:20 on a scratch piece of paper in hand
00:37:23 So I come home from from running and I write everything out
00:37:26 I write everything out all those things and as i'm running
00:37:29 I'm talking about it
00:37:32 So all these things that pop in my head as I continue to run i'm going through it
00:37:36 I'm, i'm starting to layer it down. I'm starting to break it down into okay that's happened. Okay now
00:37:42 Now let's layer this because that's just not how it happened. This didn't happen that way
00:37:46 What led up to this and so it becomes me by myself in school?
00:37:51 I'm, literally going to school right now and i'm learning so when I come home I write it out
00:37:55 And then i'm able to write out and i'm able to think about it. So, okay. Oh, this is good shit
00:38:00 This is this will help me later on
00:38:03 And then it becomes what it is now
00:38:05 And when you try to convey it to people
00:38:10 What what do you when you when you're writing it out and when you're talking about it?
00:38:13 What are you thinking? Are you thinking that this is going to get into someone's mind?
00:38:17 And this is going to help them motivate themselves. Are you just trying to express yourself and let them do with it what they can?
00:38:23 I'm them
00:38:26 You're them. I'm them
00:38:28 I and the fucked up thing about me why i'm able to do it the way i'm able to do it
00:38:31 I'm, not above them
00:38:34 I was never above them a lot of people write where they are
00:38:37 They write where they are
00:38:40 Oh, yeah, like fucking you right now writing
00:38:42 You have a good life man. You have a fucking good life. I don't write from that place
00:38:47 I write from the place that I am the the the place that created
00:38:52 Who I am I go back to that place. I call it going back to scratch
00:38:56 I can't write about david goggins now. David goggins now is a success
00:39:00 People want to get
00:39:03 To be to feel whatever success is for them
00:39:06 They want to feel that so I can't write it here at david goggins successful. I must write it. David goggins fucking man
00:39:13 I'm a fucking I don't feel good about myself
00:39:16 And every day I go through that journey. So that's where it comes from. It comes from scratch
00:39:21 all that shit all my knowledge comes from going back to where
00:39:25 the real growth
00:39:28 Growth doesn't happen when you make it so far in life. You make it so high up the whatever it is
00:39:32 Whatever you're trying to be there's no more growth
00:39:35 There's small growth
00:39:37 But you remember back when you fucking try to become joe rogan you are now
00:39:41 How much growth was in that?
00:39:44 Tons of growth learning lessons learned. So I go I always revisit that's why i'm a fucking wildland firefighter now
00:39:50 I'm a fucking smoke jumper. I don't need to do that shit
00:39:54 At all, but I don't learn anything from where i'm at now. There's no knowledge up here
00:39:59 The knowledge is down there in the fucking muck
00:40:02 So that's where I write. That's where I go back. That's where I learn. I always go back to school
00:40:06 I always go back to the basics
00:40:08 I always go back to first grade
00:40:10 and
00:40:12 How much of that is tied to doing things physically though?
00:40:16 There's like there's a there's a certain kind of physical struggle that you go through particularly with what you excel at
00:40:22 Which is endurance athlete work
00:40:24 when when
00:40:26 There's a mental and physical thing that happens when the two of them are together
00:40:31 It doesn't happen in anything else like you can do hard work hard mental work
00:40:36 And it's very difficult and i'm sure you can learn a lot from that right, but it doesn't have the
00:40:41 physical pain
00:40:43 That comes with the suck of endurance work. Yes. There's nothing nothing in the world
00:40:48 That you're able i'm able to get let's say
00:40:52 That moab 240 I was in 62 hours
00:40:55 fucking
00:40:57 sucked
00:40:58 it's just
00:41:00 With blown out knees blown out knees literally like that a few days before the race i'm getting drained
00:41:06 before the race
00:41:08 so
00:41:10 That's in your fucking mind man. Like it ain't like oh I show up to start like oh, this is fucking great
00:41:14 I'm gonna fucking have a good time out here. No i'm thinking all right. I said my fucking knees drained
00:41:18 Like i'm i'm in pain at mile zero
00:41:22 And that's in your brain. I have 240 miles of fucking ahead of me
00:41:27 And there's nothing in life nothing in life. This is why I love endurance sports so much. I love it and I hate it
00:41:33 It's a love hate relationship
00:41:35 62 hours
00:41:38 I equate that to fucking seven years of life
00:41:41 You can't get that man, so what I know that ultra does for me is it packs in
00:41:48 It packs in I can't I can't live several lifetimes
00:41:54 I can't it's because the knowledge I need to gain for this life. I live in today
00:41:58 I need two or three or four lifetimes to be where I want to go
00:42:02 Ultra gives it to me in fucking high definition real fast
00:42:07 62 hours you go out there fucking suffer
00:42:10 You come back. Oh
00:42:13 That was 62 hours. I gained seven fucking years of knowledge
00:42:16 the ups and downs the pain the suffering the the you've
00:42:20 You learn how to chunk
00:42:23 This shit down like oh my god, man. I'm at mile 100. How the fuck am I gonna get to mile 118?
00:42:27 everything becomes you you start to learn life out there and you learn so much in such a condensed period of time and
00:42:35 Nothing in the world can do it like pushing yourself to the absolute limit
00:42:40 I I call it like so
00:42:43 People have talent
00:42:46 People have a lot of talent
00:42:48 And this is going beyond your talent
00:42:52 So when talent when there's no more talent
00:42:54 What happens to you?
00:42:57 most people quit
00:42:59 People only go to their talent level and once your talent level is gone
00:43:03 It becomes a mental game that the whole mental game sets in then
00:43:08 And most people can only perform to their talent and they realize man. Why am I always messing up right here?
00:43:14 Why why why is this?
00:43:16 like my big
00:43:19 my big hurdle
00:43:21 Is because you're performing to your talent
00:43:23 And then after that your mind has nothing for you
00:43:28 Nothing for you
00:43:31 I see I see fighters. I see runners. I see people who they're great, but they get to the edge of their talent
00:43:37 it's like
00:43:40 Fuck man. What what's what's up?
00:43:42 Because you're now at the point now
00:43:44 When you're telling him to do shit for you my friend
00:43:48 Now it's the mental game
00:43:51 And that's where people get lost in life get lost in that next level
00:43:55 And that next level is found for me in the things that I do
00:43:58 I'm, it's misunderstood. That's a giant problem with fighters. Yep. There's many fighters. There's a talent problem elite level in the gym
00:44:06 But when they get tired
00:44:09 And when they get pushed and when they get into that there's a when the world starts narrowing
00:44:15 And the walls start closing in and they can't see peripherally anymore
00:44:20 And they're exhausted and they start making mistakes
00:44:22 So all their understanding of what to do next gets clouded because they're thinking about quitting
00:44:28 They're thinking about being exhausted. When am I going to get a break? Yep? How much do I have left in the tank?
00:44:33 Can I even push forward here or will I gas out and risk getting stopped?
00:44:39 And that is exactly what you said
00:44:41 Goes on in the human mind. Yeah when talent when you have a talent problem
00:44:46 Yeah, that's exactly what goes on your mind. So how are you gonna fucking defeat that bro?
00:44:50 You're sitting there getting beat the fuck down by a motherfucker. Just on you
00:44:54 Fucking just throwing you down take down take down take down hitting the face hitting the face
00:44:59 And all that's going through your mind is what you just fucking said
00:45:02 There's no positivity in that
00:45:05 But when you train the mind the way I train mine
00:45:07 Fucking ready man fucking ready because first of all, I didn't have much talent
00:45:12 So I had to train one fucking thing
00:45:15 You better train your fucking mind because my talents can run out way early
00:45:19 When shit got hard for me back in the day, bro, i'm done. I'm out. See you
00:45:22 Okay
00:45:24 I gotta invent a motherfucker that can
00:45:26 So I invented goggans
00:45:28 I invented a motherfucker that that that realized we're not good enough
00:45:32 but goggans realizes
00:45:35 We're mentally strong as fuck
00:45:37 And we're going to outstrength these motherfuckers in the mind
00:45:40 There's a big. Um
00:45:42 Under there's an understanding in fighting that sometimes talent
00:45:47 Is a curse
00:45:50 Because some people are very talented and they just don't work as hard
00:45:53 You know, uh kabib nirmaga methoff talks about that, right?
00:45:57 And he's one of the greatest mixed martial arts fighters of all time for sure one of the rare guys to retire undefeated
00:46:03 But he's like talented guys don't work hard enough
00:46:06 No, he's like talented guys. The problem with talented guys is they can get by early
00:46:12 They're they're like faster than people. Maybe they just have a better understanding or better coordination
00:46:17 some people just
00:46:19 You know, we're not even like people are not even in their abilities when it comes to sports
00:46:24 Some people are just very gifted. Yes, but gifted fighters in particular
00:46:29 They just there's something about it where a lot of them never
00:46:33 Realize their full potential. No because they don't develop that mental game that you're talking about
00:46:39 They don't have to because they could piece people up on the outside
00:46:42 They win fights easy. They stop a bunch of people in the first round
00:46:46 They look like a hero
00:46:47 But then when someone comes along that can survive that first round and then start dragging them into hell, that's right
00:46:54 Oh, you see and that's what you said you drag a motherfucking hell. Who's a fucking who's a demon?
00:46:59 Yeah, you're in the long for a long race and they're hard
00:47:02 People with a talent problem who are so talented
00:47:05 They're hard to train
00:47:08 They're hard to push if if you're their coach
00:47:11 And you're trying to get them to see that we got to get you past this talent problem
00:47:15 We got we got to get you to the point where you're
00:47:17 into that mental zone
00:47:20 Because we got to get you way past your talent and it's hard for coaches to take these these fighters or whoever
00:47:26 Past your talent and on the other side of that is where they gain true true levels
00:47:32 The levels beyond talent that that's where it really is
00:47:37 Because if you're able to take a motherfucker down to deep end
00:47:39 Well, my first is putting his toe in feeling the water and shit
00:47:43 If it's my first in the deep end, he'll be take you down there and he's mentally strong. It's over
00:47:48 It's over man. They could because they because they live in the deep end. They live in it, man
00:47:53 They thrive in it
00:47:55 It's almost like you have to have the ability to go to the deep end no matter whether or not you'll ever go there, right?
00:48:01 Yes, and some people are like well, i'm never going to go to the deep end
00:48:05 But you should be able to yes
00:48:07 100 you have to be trained to do it. You have to be trained for it for when that time comes
00:48:12 You're like, okay
00:48:14 I'm deep in qualified. Yeah, I am deep in fucking qualified. I got my fucking deep end certification
00:48:19 But you know what's interesting about this book is you talk about how there was moments even though you're clearly deep end qualified clearly
00:48:27 Deep end certified sir
00:48:30 You took some time and you hadn't been a deep end for a while and you're kind of a part-time savage now
00:48:34 That's right. This is kind of bullshit and you're recognizing it in yourself, even though you know your ability
00:48:40 You know your history, you know what you've been capable of doing in the past you're like, but I haven't been there
00:48:45 Nope, i've been there in a while and you had to go back
00:48:47 What's funny about that part-time savage thing in there man, where I fucking totally dog myself is the truth
00:48:53 Um all this became nice
00:48:56 waking up motherfuckers
00:48:58 bacon and eggs motherfucker
00:49:00 fuck fuck protein shake early morning shit
00:49:03 and
00:49:05 I stopped having those hard conversations with myself
00:49:07 Boy my whole life. That's why my friends hate my ass boy
00:49:11 Because i'm hard on me if i'm hard on me. I don't give a fuck about you
00:49:16 I don't give a fuck about what you don't give a fuck. We think about me nothing else hard on myself, bro
00:49:21 Every morning I woke up. All right, motherfucker. I call it my morning meeting
00:49:26 My morning meeting we all have these fucking meetings all fucking day long, you know, we go to work
00:49:29 We're working for somebody else
00:49:32 They want a meeting because they want to be successful
00:49:34 So we all sit our ass down try and make them better try make them more money. Try make them more powerful
00:49:39 We don't do that for ourselves. Every morning. I wake up. I used to I
00:49:42 Had to get back into it again because in that chapter you see I became a little bitch
00:49:46 That morning meeting I wake up. Okay. Goggins. What did you do fucked up yesterday?
00:49:50 Where were you at and I just go through to analyze my life
00:49:55 And then I went through a period of time there man where I stopped having those conversations, you know
00:49:58 how you
00:49:59 Let's say you and your wife go out. Let's say I don't I don't know i'm just making up a story here
00:50:04 You and your wife go out and you see your cousin and your cousin's fat as fuck
00:50:08 I don't know. I don't know. They are not hopefully not if they are apologize, maybe
00:50:13 So they go out and you see your cousin. She's fat as fuck. He's fat as fuck. Whoever
00:50:18 and
00:50:21 You guys get back in the car and you guys man you see motherfucking mary joe
00:50:25 How fat she was
00:50:27 That's what we do
00:50:28 We go back in the hard conversation that you should be having a mary joe. Hey mary joe
00:50:32 You fucking gained some weight, huh sister fucking kind of big
00:50:34 That's what I do to myself
00:50:37 A lot of people that we see all day long. We see them. We don't have the hard conversation when we we walk around
00:50:43 I'd rather you fucking hate me
00:50:45 And get better
00:50:46 Then like me and stay the same
00:50:48 And that's how I feel about david goggins
00:50:50 Motherfucker, I'd rather me hate. Oh, I hate you. David, man. I hate you david
00:50:54 But I get better from it. I get better from it. And that's why when people see me and I know you you're you're in
00:51:00 My little foxhole
00:51:01 If you're my foxhole and you become a piece of shit
00:51:03 Hey
00:51:05 Come here, brother. Let me talk to you real quick, brother
00:51:07 People don't like that shit man, but i'm not gonna allow you
00:51:10 To go to a place
00:51:13 That's gonna be hard to get out of
00:51:15 It's gonna be hard if I allow you to gain five more pounds
00:51:18 Or allow you to take four more days off of school or allow you to keep on
00:51:23 Frustrating in your fucking life and I see it and I tell jennifer behind your back i'm doing you no fucking justice
00:51:29 Zero justice. So where this world is now
00:51:33 You can't say a motherfucking thing
00:51:35 I do
00:51:37 I still do and I always will don't like me
00:51:40 Don't like me i'm good with that. That's exactly what's going on with like fat models. That's it
00:51:47 I'm proud like you're beautiful no matter what
00:51:51 But that's not true. And the thing about it is I have no problem if you want to be fat
00:51:56 I have no problem with anybody if you want to be whatever the fuck you want to be
00:52:00 But make sure you fucking if you're fat, motherfucker go go be fat
00:52:04 Go be real fucking fat, but let's be real. Nobody wants to be nobody does that's why I said it man. Nobody does it's not true
00:52:11 They will pretend i'm fine with it
00:52:13 But if I could give you a button that you could push and point be skinny all of a sudden
00:52:18 You'd have this incredible body. You'd take everybody would push that button. But what happens is man we get in this world
00:52:23 Where it gets hard? Yeah
00:52:25 And so the harder it is the more you start to push back
00:52:29 And the more you push back and then it's not right for people to talk about it's not right for
00:52:35 Like let's say you are fat. I was fat. That's why I talk about it
00:52:39 Go ahead and say something motherfucker. I was fat too
00:52:42 And it was hard as fuck every fucking day to get up
00:52:44 I know what it feels like when you roll your fat ass out of bed
00:52:47 All you want is some fucking damn cinnamon buns and shit and fucking chuck and chocolate milkshake. I know what it is
00:52:53 I know exactly what it is, but I can't want it more than you
00:52:57 And so many people
00:53:00 Just want it the easy way. I'm sorry man. It's not so what they start to do is they build this narrative
00:53:07 It's okay
00:53:09 when the narrative should be
00:53:11 You need to fucking work harder. You need to fucking discipline your mind better. We need to help people more than just saying it's okay
00:53:20 It's okay
00:53:22 That you're not fucking willing to fucking help yourself out. That's not okay
00:53:25 It's not okay. It's not acceptable
00:53:28 Even though it's your life if that's if that's acceptable, that's unacceptable
00:53:32 And there's a lot of people in this world me included that if I accepted that I wouldn't be anywhere
00:53:39 So yeah, a lot of people just fucking they they start creating a narrative about themselves that make it
00:53:45 Okay, the ultimate get out of jail free card and now the world is set up
00:53:49 To have so many get out of jail free cards
00:53:51 Everything is okay, and you can't say a motherfucking thing about it
00:53:56 This is what it's interesting though
00:53:59 Is that when you're talking about how you had to come to this realization that you'd become a part-time savage? Yep. This is recently
00:54:07 Yeah, that's uh, you're looking at
00:54:09 2000
00:54:12 2018 yeah. Yeah, 2018 not that long ago. No, fuck. No
00:54:16 Yeah, so even though you've been through all those things and you have all this information in your head
00:54:23 It's like there's no rest
00:54:24 No
00:54:25 You never get a chance and if you do take a little time and start enjoying it
00:54:29 All of a sudden that general in the back of your head is like hey, hey, look what you're doing
00:54:34 Exactly being a little bitch. And so in your mind
00:54:37 You had gotten soft. Oh 100 and my softness
00:54:42 Was still two days
00:54:44 So if you look in there two days was you being soft my part-time savage was me running like 50 miles a week
00:54:51 Me fucking not, you know, because what I used to do and what I do now
00:54:55 Is I got to a point I'd be running and I was like, okay, man, we could do
00:54:58 10 miles today
00:55:01 I get I get to 10 miles back. Oh, no, motherfucker
00:55:04 That fucking demon that I let out every fucking morning that walks the streets at night
00:55:07 He comes saying oh bitch
00:55:10 Not today, man. There's somebody out there that you don't know have never fucking met in your entire life
00:55:15 That is doing 12 13 14. You're gonna do another one
00:55:19 And when you meet them
00:55:22 You ain't gonna be fucking ready
00:55:24 So the goggins kept on running so you talk about that and uh, you talk about how cam came to visit you in vegas
00:55:31 And give you a spot check. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. I'm always ready for a motherfucker like cam
00:55:35 I'm always ready for my flight cam
00:55:37 So out of nowhere dude this guy calls me literally and this is one thing about life. This is why you always must be ready
00:55:44 Always be ready never get ready people go. Oh, hey, what are you training for david?
00:55:50 I ain't training for shit when something pops up i'll be fucking ready
00:55:54 So when cam popped the fuck up and cam calls hey, man
00:55:58 I'm gonna be in uh, las vegas. You're gonna go for a run
00:56:01 Sure do
00:56:04 Sure do brother
00:56:06 Sure do while the run sucked
00:56:08 I was ready. Well, you guys were doing like six minute miles for like 26 miles
00:56:12 It was it was 20 miles and jennifer was with us
00:56:16 And so jennifer can run her fucking ass off. She's fast as shit. So we went out
00:56:20 But she's not a six minute mile runner. So we went out for the first 10 and jennifer was with us
00:56:26 She was with us for the first seven. She turned around. I think she's like 15 miles
00:56:30 So me and cam went out after we left jennifer. She went back
00:56:33 For another three to go out and get 10 and come back 10, but my whole idea was
00:56:38 I know the course bitch
00:56:40 I'm about to drop your fucking ass motherfucker
00:56:43 So we go out because because because going out
00:56:46 Is a little bit. Um
00:56:49 As oh, of course, I think it was a little bit uphill a little bit downhill a little bit downhill
00:56:55 So a little bit downhill so we turned on 10 mile mark come back
00:56:57 And I could tell cam was hurting boy, but cam was a prideful motherfucker, dude
00:57:02 Prideful motherfucker love that dude. So we get to about mile
00:57:06 16 17
00:57:08 And I could tell now
00:57:09 He kind of comes off my shoulder slightly
00:57:12 and i'm like, oh
00:57:14 Chink in the armor
00:57:16 I feel it
00:57:17 You know, you always can look at you know, you know out of your peripheral vision
00:57:20 But i'm like this is a prideful motherfucker, man
00:57:24 And we keep on going man holding sixes. We get to about mile 18. I look
00:57:29 Cam's right back on the shoulder. I just smiled. I said you are exactly who the fuck I thought you were a motherfucker
00:57:35 And so we went out tested each other man. Good day went to the gym worked out hard
00:57:41 We ain't got some same day saying oh, we fucking worked it out, dude. We never meet him together. You can guarantee
00:57:47 It's gonna be two people
00:57:50 that
00:57:50 Love each other
00:57:52 But are waiting for the other motherfucker to break
00:57:54 100
00:57:56 Dude, it's like this thing in the back of your head. Okay, maybe this will break them
00:57:59 Maybe this will break them so we haven't broken each other yet, but i'm sure the day will come
00:58:04 So you run 20 miles and then lift weights but see lifting weights people like people don't get it man
00:58:10 It's not like lifting weights
00:58:12 It's like, you know, we go and do like so many reps
00:58:16 Like people go. Oh, you're only doing um was like 90 some pounds on the incline
00:58:22 motherfucker do five sets of 25
00:58:25 With a super set of push-ups super set of curls super set of pull-ups super set of triceps
00:58:31 Super set of what the fuck else was I forget us. It's a super set man
00:58:35 So we're going through lifting lightweight, but for massive massive amounts of reps
00:58:40 And so you're like totally swollen and like it's just the some of the best workouts in the world between me and him
00:58:46 Some of the best workouts in the world man
00:58:49 And then you had steak and then we had steak. That's right. And then I treat cancer steak
00:58:53 Right, and that's a mental aid station mental. Oh, yes mental aid stations, baby
00:58:58 I think one of the most important parts about the way you express yourself in your books is that you do talk about your weaknesses
00:59:05 And you do talk about your past and how you started off on this journey
00:59:10 And you talk about how there are those moments that you doubt. Oh, yeah, and you but you still go
00:59:16 Oh, yeah, sometimes like, you know, I call it. Uh
00:59:19 You got called audible
00:59:21 You know the line of screamers man, like some of the great quarterbacks
00:59:23 They'll be at the line of screamers and they'll look at the defense the defense is oh fuck
00:59:28 Defense is shifting. Did he call an audible?
00:59:31 In my mind a lot of times man. I'm like it doesn't mean I quit
00:59:35 I don't quit
00:59:37 You know, I may not make it the first time
00:59:39 But i'll come back. I got calling audible. I got a fucking I got it
00:59:44 I got to fucking get my head back in the game. I got to I got to figure this shit out
00:59:48 It doesn't mean you leave it means you study it more
00:59:51 It means you study it more and and whenever I feel that something people I say man
00:59:55 How do you handle failure man? I feel a lot dude
00:59:58 I feel all the fucking time they go. How do you handle it?
01:00:02 What i'm trying to do?
01:00:05 And this isn't being arrogant man. I I it's being real
01:00:07 Not many people are trying to do
01:00:10 so
01:00:11 There's not many people who can even open their fucking mouth
01:00:14 And criticize me when I do fail
01:00:17 Because i'm on i'm i'm trying to do shit man that many people aren't trying to do but I don't look at failure as failure
01:00:22 I look at failure as
01:00:24 Your first second third fourth fifth attempt
01:00:27 I look at them as attempts
01:00:29 I don't look at anything as failure because when you're willing to try
01:00:32 To do some not trying is failure
01:00:35 That's that's and that's not some after-school special shit
01:00:39 But when you're able to go out there, there's there's no failure
01:00:41 It's attempts because when you're trying to do something that's bigger than you whatever you are
01:00:46 Whoever you are if if if you're paralyzed you're trying to walk one step and you didn't you didn't fail motherfucker
01:00:52 That was your first attempt
01:00:54 If that's your biggest thing
01:00:56 That's how your mindset needs to go into everything
01:00:58 So I don't look at it as failure is a big word like that gets people down and shit
01:01:03 We give so much power to words
01:01:05 I don't
01:01:06 I take the power right away. I didn't feel shit
01:01:08 Do you ever have conversations with cam about mindset?
01:01:13 We no we we we really don't go there too much at all about mindset like whenever we get together it's really about
01:01:19 breaking the motherfuckers down
01:01:21 It's like it's like wouldn't you be interested though in how he approached because I don't know if everybody shares your approach
01:01:29 I know there's not very many people like you right cam is one of them, right?
01:01:32 So like how many of them are like you and how many of them?
01:01:35 Have that sort of similar approach and how many of them are willing to discuss their own demons?
01:01:42 Because a lot of people that are like super endurance athletes are very hard people
01:01:47 They don't ever want to even discuss the weakness. They don't want to shine any light on it. No people hate that
01:01:51 Yeah, people hate it man, and I love it and the reason people hate it to me. This is just my own theory
01:01:57 Is because you haven't beat it
01:02:00 That's why
01:02:01 People go man. Why are you so open and vulnerable? I'll tell you everything I lied about everything
01:02:06 I fucked up with everything. I'll tell you everything. I'm an open fucking book. I don't give a fuck
01:02:11 The only reason why I don't give a fuck anymore
01:02:13 is because
01:02:15 I overcame it and I beat it
01:02:17 So i'm going to talk about it why most people aren't willing to go to that darkness and that vulnerability
01:02:22 Is because they're still dealing with it
01:02:25 when people who have overcome it they're open fucking book, bro, because
01:02:29 They're proud
01:02:32 They're fucking proud. That's why I speak man, man. Why are you always yelling guys? Fuck you
01:02:35 It's how I talk bitch because i'm proud mother. You know i'm saying i'm a proud motherfucker, man
01:02:39 Yeah, it's not proud like look at me. It's like motherfucker. I know where I fucking came from bitch
01:02:45 I shouldn't be here right now talking to you
01:02:48 Shouldn't be talking to you motherfucker. I shouldn't be I'm just a fat sloppy motherfucker. I'm proud
01:02:53 So i'm able to tell you I was fucked up many people can't
01:02:57 Because you know, that's a common thing that people say
01:03:01 When I interview them after fights like i'm not supposed to be here. This is not supposed to happen to me
01:03:06 All right, there's a common thing when i've had conversations with people and they you know, they've won a big fight
01:03:13 They've had this big event
01:03:14 Right. They they say I wasn't supposed to be here, right?
01:03:17 Statistically like chris gutierrez just said that uh last ufc fight when I interviewed him. It's like i'm not supposed to be here, right?
01:03:25 Probably because they come from a bad place. Exactly. You know, they and when you're in a bad, especially when you're young, you know
01:03:31 redevelop self-esteem
01:03:34 You know by the age of seven if you're if if you're not good by the age of seven or eight years old
01:03:41 You have a good chance of being fucked the rest of your life
01:03:44 Yeah, so if your parents or or you came up wrong and then
01:03:48 Seven or eight if you don't have the self-esteem, but you fucking grind you're like I want to be better
01:03:53 when you get to that
01:03:55 Ufc championship or you get to where where I got or where I am
01:04:01 It's almost like you can't believe the journey like I talked about in that fucking vfw and i'm in the first chapter of that book man
01:04:06 I'm sitting in that audience with all those fucking people
01:04:09 And i'm about to get the you know, americanism award
01:04:12 and I was grinding so hard I never took time to reflect on my life and this was like
01:04:17 time to reflect
01:04:19 And I was all kind of fucked up. I got on stage man. Just fucking cried for like 59 seconds
01:04:24 And it was such an emotional moment for me that I fucking
01:04:28 That I fucking did what I did and I overcame it. It was it was alone, man
01:04:33 you know, I have fucking like teammates and fucking like
01:04:36 You know family push my mom was struggling bro. She was strong. So it was like me my mom
01:04:42 And so it was a lot of just me
01:04:45 so when you're waking up every morning by yourself and you're fucking getting after it by yourself and
01:04:49 and
01:04:51 It's the it's the hidden work
01:04:53 People see one minute, you know video of me running and shit and like and like these fighters, you know
01:04:58 They they see during the fight or after the fight. They don't see this motherfucking man what they deal with every fucking day
01:05:05 I'm, not good enough. I'm not good enough. I shouldn't be here. Shouldn't it be here because every day
01:05:10 Even though they're fucking the best in the world
01:05:12 That little motherfucker at seven or eight years old is still in there saying oh man, we don't have something. We're not good enough
01:05:18 We're not we shouldn't be here. So you're always fighting that motherfucker, even though you beat it
01:05:23 You never truly beat it. So when they get on stage and then talking to joe rogan
01:05:28 It's it's uh, it's not even real
01:05:30 It's not real all those mornings that you don't want to fucking get up and and I look at it as like a fucking
01:05:35 Like a rock and you find this fucking rock and that rock is you
01:05:40 And every day you fucking fight not wanting to get up
01:05:44 And you do anyway you chip another piece off that fucking rock and every day you fucking eat the right foods
01:05:49 And every day you go to train you train harder and harder and harder and harder
01:05:52 And you get up earlier and all these things you do to start forming yourself
01:05:56 You're chipping another fucking piece of that rock up before you know it. You have this beautiful fucking piece of
01:06:02 artwork that that you built
01:06:05 But people don't and then once you get there you see it it becomes real like oh my god fucking did this shit
01:06:11 And so like the the fucking journey becomes so real then but so many people aren't willing to fucking chip away
01:06:17 At that stone that is them to start chipping off those fucking rough edges
01:06:22 That's the fear the fear is never reaching your potential. That's it that always falling short always quitting before you're done always
01:06:29 Procrastinating always not doing the right thing and then one day you're an old man
01:06:36 Yep, and you look back and go god. I could have been great. Yep. It could have been great
01:06:40 I never forget one time I was running by a graveyard. I mean I was fucking just trying to become
01:06:45 I was fat
01:06:47 And I ran by a graveyard and I looked out there
01:06:51 and I have all these epiphanies man of all these fucking moments of like
01:06:54 Of it's crazy man of this thought come always by myself. I'm always in deep fucking thought about how to be better
01:07:01 And look out there. I'm like man. I wonder how many of you motherfuckers in there
01:07:04 Fucking just are so upset with how you lived your life
01:07:08 and fucking just
01:07:11 Regret how you lived it and i'm running a 300 pound man thinking man
01:07:14 Don't fucking die like this, bro
01:07:19 Don't die like this. So people wonder where this shit comes from from me
01:07:21 It comes from such deep thought of trying to see what this is all about what is this life all about what am I all about
01:07:31 Why am I here?
01:07:33 You know, I had I had to find purpose
01:07:35 and
01:07:38 My suffering it had a purpose it had a fucking purpose
01:07:42 Do you talk to other people that are like you
01:07:46 And try to understand if they're going through the same thing or they're trying to gather knowledge as well
01:07:50 Are they just doing it because they're addicted to runners high are they doing it because they enjoy the challenge?
01:07:56 Like how many people do you talk to that are like you?
01:08:00 I've never talked to anyone that
01:08:03 And most people don't even believe when I say half time that I I do it to fucking
01:08:08 Gain knowledge and all that shit. I've I haven't met one that goes out there people really enjoy
01:08:14 a lot of the shit that they do
01:08:16 like like they
01:08:17 I don't know many people can go out and run 240 miles at one time if you don't enjoy it
01:08:22 If if you just don't really enjoy it so, you know, I I had
01:08:29 Many people build confidence in different ways
01:08:33 And they build belief in different ways coming from where I came from
01:08:37 I didn't have any belief in myself
01:08:41 So some people can go read a book and get belief. Some people can go take a yoga class
01:08:46 Have good parents
01:08:48 I had to put myself so where I came from was so far down
01:08:52 underneath like soil
01:08:55 That I had to build belief
01:08:58 By truly ingraining it in my brain. So the things I do
01:09:03 I'm always every day
01:09:06 Building belief and my belief had to be where it is because I was so far down
01:09:11 So it may take a 200 mile run for me. It may take 100 mile run may take
01:09:14 late nights in the gym
01:09:17 But without belief
01:09:19 You have nothing
01:09:20 And I realized that when I was a young kid, I have no belief I have to build it
01:09:23 And a five mile run didn't do it
01:09:26 I had to push myself to such extremes because I came some people judge me by not knowing where I came from
01:09:32 So
01:09:35 Unless you're me and you came from where I came from. I guarantee you wouldn't made it out
01:09:39 Guarantee it and I knew that so my belief comes from going I had to build it and that's how I build it man
01:09:45 I build it by the things I do. It's so painful reading about
01:09:49 Your childhood and the experiences with your father
01:09:53 and then when you went back
01:09:56 And met your father as an adult
01:10:01 And got with them and watched him get drunk and then watch him get belligerent and and experience it all over again
01:10:09 And then think about what happened to him to make him who he is yeah that fucked me up dude, but I had to go like
01:10:15 I realized I was fucked. I was I was just a sorry motherfucker. You know, I quit pararescue
01:10:22 I was afraid of the water every time shit got hard
01:10:24 Like I said, I didn't have talent, you know, I fucking didn't have shit
01:10:28 And whenever shit got hard for me
01:10:30 I thought I was on my way out and I got sucked back in
01:10:32 I become I become a loser again real quick and I see him all the time
01:10:36 There's a lot of fucking losers out here that won't face it
01:10:39 I was like, oh man
01:10:41 You gotta go back and visit this motherfucker. I haven't seen my dad in fucking years man
01:10:46 years
01:10:47 But I knew where I came from. I knew where my mindset came from. I knew where my demons were
01:10:53 So my whole idea when I went back to see my dad
01:10:56 Was I was hoping that I could just fucking call myself a loser that it's because of you dad
01:11:02 So I was hoping to go back and get the confirmation
01:11:05 That I always wanted that wasn't my fault
01:11:08 That voice in my head was so loud. It's not your fault david
01:11:11 It's not your fault. You can't read and write. It's not your fault that people call you fucking niggas. Not your fault
01:11:16 It's not your fault. This is not your fault. That's not your fault that you're fat
01:11:19 It's not your fault that you're that that you quit shit. It's not your fault
01:11:23 So I was like, okay, man
01:11:24 I'm gonna go back visit this motherfucker so I can just squash it and I can just go on and be a fucking loser because
01:11:29 You fucked me up
01:11:31 And I got there. I went drove to buffalo
01:11:33 Saw my dad
01:11:35 Same routine as it was when I was eight years old, man
01:11:38 Walked in what's up?
01:11:40 Went to skateland. I sat in that fucking couch that you would cheat on my mom with
01:11:44 And I sat on that couch in the corner and I was like god, what the fuck man?
01:11:48 It was a whole normal day
01:11:51 and the more I was around him he started now he started getting drunk and and I won't go through the whole thing, but
01:11:56 I started seeing man. I started having a conference. I always have these conversations with myself like man, this motherfucker
