Predicting the final score of the San Francisco 49ers' Week 10 road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Transcript
00:00 It's going to be a Sunday morning game, 10 a.m.
00:02 10 o'clock for them going across the country.
00:05 Nine is in the road.
00:07 And they both will have had a bye and this other team has won five in a row.
00:11 So I'm going to do a translation from the Yiddish, what my mother would have said.
00:16 I should pick the Niners?
00:18 Yeah.
00:19 I should pick the Niners in a game like that?
00:23 No.
00:24 I mean, the other team won five in a row.
00:26 They won, lost three in a row.
00:28 My attitude is very clear about the Niners.
00:31 When they were on a winning streak, I picked them every time.
00:33 Now they're on a losing streak.
00:35 They lost that quarterback in Cleveland.
00:37 I'm picking against them every game until they win.
00:41 I feel that against Minnesota, it was not a good team, particularly.
00:47 They couldn't beat Minnesota.
00:48 They couldn't beat that P.J. Walker from Cleveland.
00:51 They should beat Trevor Lawrence.
00:54 No, I'm not going to pick them.
00:56 I'm not good at scores.
00:58 I'm picking Jacksonville until further notice.
01:01 I'm picking the opponent.
01:04 I agree.
01:05 And I don't think Niner fans realize what Jacksonville is like.
01:08 Their defense is good.
01:09 I'm looking at them right now.
01:11 They've given up more than 24 points only once this season.
01:13 They give up 37 to Houston.
01:15 Not sure how that happened.
01:16 That was week three.
01:17 Since then, they haven't lost.
01:19 They held the Kansas City Chiefs to 17 points.
01:22 They held the Bills to 20 points.
01:24 Last week they held, two weeks ago, they held the Steelers to 10 points.
01:28 This is a really good defense that's really good against the run.
01:31 They're giving up 3.6 yards per carry this season.
01:34 That's fourth best.
01:35 So this is a team that is sort of built to shut down what the Niners do on offense.
01:40 And they have a quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, who statistically gets the ball out of his
01:43 hands as quick as any quarterback in the league.
01:47 So once again, it's going to be tough for Chase Young and Nick Bosa and these guys to
01:51 make an impact.
01:56 And apparently Trevor Lawrence is the best quarterback in the league against zone coverage.
02:01 Even better than Joe Burrow, statistically.
02:04 Also Steve Wilkes tries to play that.
02:06 Go ahead.
02:07 Purdy is good against zone as well.
02:10 Absolutely.
02:11 So we'll see about that.
02:13 But if Joe Burrow could do what he did against the Niners zone, Trevor Lawrence could do
02:17 it too.
02:18 They might need to play a little bit more man to man coverage this week.
02:21 Let's see if Steve Wilkes has the guts.
02:25 Or the players.
02:26 That's the thing.
02:28 When you play man to man coverage, it's like you're asking Travarius Ward to hold and grab
02:32 and commit an automatic first down penalty and it's tough.
02:36 I want to add something, Iggy.
02:39 We've both picked against the Niners.
02:41 This is a Niner channel and a lot of this stuff is going to go on SI.com on your feed
02:49 there and that's again, Niner fans.
02:52 So I want to say something.
02:54 We are not taking any pleasure in picking against the Niners.
02:59 And if they win, I'll applaud them.
03:01 Yeah.
03:02 Because the big game and they rose up.
03:05 I'm only giving my honest opinion as an observer.
03:09 So please don't write in, we're haters, because I don't hate the 49ers.
03:14 I'd be just as happy for them to win.
03:17 We're not haters.
03:19 And a lot of people write, I could see where your son gets it from.
03:22 You're so negative.
03:23 We're not being negative.
03:25 We're being analytical.
03:27 Negative would be, I hate the 49ers.
03:28 I hope they lose.
03:29 We're not like that.
03:31 We don't feel that way at all.
03:32 I'd be just as happy for them to win or lose.
03:34 I'm an observer.
03:36 So we're not haters, but based on what's happened the last three games, it's very hard to pick
03:42 them against a reasonably good team.
03:45 And we'd be foolhardy to try to please you to not tell the truth as we understand it.
03:52 That's right.
03:53 And I'm looking at a defense that gave up 17 to the Chiefs and 20 to the Bills and the
03:58 Niners have scored 17 points three games in a row.
04:01 Yeah.
04:02 Deebo Samuel's coming back and Trent Williams is coming back, but this defense is good that
04:04 they're facing.
04:05 They stopped the run.
04:06 I'm thinking the Niners scored 20 in this game.
04:08 And then given what their defense has been doing, I think it's unlikely that they'll
04:12 give up fewer than 24.
04:14 So I'm picking Jaguars 24, Niners 20.
04:17 2420.
04:18 I have one question about Deebo.
04:22 When he really came into his own a few years ago, they lined him up in the backfield.
04:28 Can they do that a lot now or has that been figured out?
04:32 Well, I feel like what they were doing has kind of got figured out and you would need
04:37 a really creative coach to sort of stay one step ahead.
04:41 I have a feeling of Deebo Samuel were on, say, let me pick a team randomly.
04:46 Miami.
04:47 If he were on the Dolphins, I think he'd be really good.
04:51 And that year that he was an all pro, Mike McDaniel was the offensive coordinator.
04:54 I think you need someone really, really creative to get the most out of him.
04:58 And I'm starting to question how creative Kyle Shanahan is.
05:00 Really, I'm starting to look at him more like Sean McVay, who seemed like an offensive genius
05:05 for a time, but really was just as good as his assistant coaches.
05:09 He was a product of his assistant coaches to a large degree.
05:13 Well, so what you're saying is it will be a little hard for them to get a lot out of
05:19 Debo the way they did when he was really hot.
05:23 What they'd have to do is get him screen passes, short passes at near the line and get some
05:29 blocking.
05:30 And then once he's in the open field, he's phenomenal.
05:33 He is.
05:34 He's fast.
05:35 He's strong and he's exciting, but they're having fewer opportunities to get him there.
05:41 Yeah.
05:42 I mean, I just think if Mike McDaniel were here, he were the coach instead of Kyle Shanahan,
05:46 you'd have so many plays where you had Debo Samuel go in one direction and Christian McCaffrey
05:50 going another.
05:51 Christian McCaffrey running to the left and Debo Samuel coming around and end around to
05:54 the right.
05:55 And you constantly have the two most dangerous players go in different directions and defenses
05:59 like, you don't see that kind of stuff with the Niners anymore.
06:03 When you watch the Dolphins, who aren't the greatest team in the world, but they are very
06:06 creative, you just always see Mike McDaniel leveraging his fastest players, going different
06:12 directions and stressing defenses out that way.
06:13 I don't think you see that with the Niners as much.
06:16 I would have to point out that a theme that you have in our broadcast today is you're
06:22 a little skeptical and down on Shanahan.
06:27 The offensive coordinator.
06:29 He got so much credit for being an offensive genius and being so creative.
06:33 It's not there.
06:34 It wasn't there last year.
06:36 They traded for Christian McCaffrey.
06:37 Everything changed.
06:38 But now they Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are getting figured out a little bit that
06:42 there's just a full season's worth of tape on him.
06:45 They're right back to 17 points a game with a lot of talent on this team.
06:49 And I don't know.
06:50 It's like people say, why isn't Debo Samuel producing the way he used to?
06:55 Is it because he got paid?
06:56 Is he not?
06:57 Does he not care as much anymore?
06:58 Maybe it's because the guy who got him paid is in Miami now.
07:01 How about that?
07:05 If the Niners win on the road and score 30 or more points, will you praise them?
07:12 Absolutely.
07:13 I minimize after all I've said, all off all by week and today.
07:17 Now I got to praise them.
07:18 I got to praise them.
07:19 And you know, one other thing.
07:21 And then even if they win by a point and this is a win is a win.
07:29 Even if they win ugly, even if they win on a freak play, a win is a win.
07:36 And there is a complete difference between a win and a loss.
07:39 There is no such thing as a good loss and there is no such thing as a bad win.
07:46 Unless of course you lose your quarterback or somebody significant gets hurt.
07:50 But ruling that out, there is no such thing as a bad win.
07:54 And that's what makes sports so simple and so blunt.
07:59 Also I mean the Niners really have only won one way this year.
08:02 They get a lead early.
08:03 They cruise.
08:05 If they could actually find a way, a new way to beat Jacksonville, that would be almost
08:12 more meaningful.
08:14 Coming from behind.
08:15 Meaning if coming from behind and they've really not shown the ability to come from
08:18 behind, they're much more comfortable leading early.
08:23 That's again on Kyle because you know teams have to come from behind.
08:30 Bill Walsh had to come from behind in Super Bowls.
08:32 You have to come from behind and if you can't do it, you got a big problem.
08:39 If you can only win one way, you're not going to win a Super Bowl because everything isn't
08:43 going to go according to plan 20 times in a row.
08:47 You know it's funny.
08:48 Bill Walsh once told me that.
08:50 He said that if you can only win one way, you got a problem.
08:53 He said like there is some teams that beat you by strength and power.
08:59 They beat you up at the line of scrimmage.
09:01 They hurt you.
09:02 What if they play a team that's stronger so they're just going to lose because the other
09:06 team can beat him up?
09:07 He said you have to have another way to win and if you don't, you lose.
09:11 So the Niners need another way to win.
09:13 They have one way to win and that's why they lost last year.
09:17 They fell behind.
09:19 They got to show that they can win otherwise.
09:22 Maybe that'll be this week.
09:24 If it is, it'll be a big deal.
09:26 Ryan Kessler, $2.
09:27 Thank you Ryan Kessler again.
09:28 Five bucks.
09:29 Why is Kyle still committed to getting Elijah Carey's?
09:31 Give those to Jordan Mason instead, please.
09:33 If he keeps doing that after the bye week, you'd really have to wonder what exactly he
09:37 looked at.
09:38 Ramon Clark says the second half makes and breaks teams.
09:41 We need to see what we have.
09:42 Someone tell Max Skinney the Hawks are dumpster juice.
09:45 Have a good day, fellas.
09:48 Okay, thanks Ramon Clark.
09:50 I don't understand.
09:51 Um, Chris Telerico says it's pronounced like Rico in Puerto Rico.
09:55 Tell a tell a Rico and Rico Suave.
09:57 All right, Chris, tell a Rico Niners win ugly this week.
10:00 Niners have somehow developed a trend of being able to win regular season games.
10:04 They need to win in order to play in January.
10:06 Fair enough.
10:08 They need to Rico tell Rico.
10:11 I'm trying.
10:12 I've been saying it wrong for a long time.
10:14 Chris, I'm really sorry.
